I'm seeing lots of comments here about the time it took to go the first 2000km, and I want to make something clear: we were NOT trying to go as fast as possible. If we were, we would have avoided lots of the b-roads we took, sought out faster chargers, and drove for longer each day. We did have one day where we drove until we were tired, but most of the time we were only driving between 300-400km a day. I wanted it to be an enjoyable road trip, not a cannonball run. Weather was also a significant factor for most of our trip. No, we were not getting optimal charging speeds, but we could have made this a 3 day trip instead of a 5 day one without much difficulty. We just didn't want to.

Larger batteries give you the range but you trade off charging time. Small/medium batteries charge very quickly. I've road tripped with my 38kw/h ioniq and you spend like 15 minutes charging at 50kw/h chargers and move on to the next one. It's a very efficient use of time IMO.

The I5 will charge to a top rate of about 230-240kw shown by other reviews to date, which is amazing and equal to the other fastest EV cars on the road. Wont see the fastest speeds until battery temps are warmer and we see some pre heat update software. Gotta say to date with just under 4800km I love my LR RWD, no issues. Efficiency for me has been 17kwh over the 4800km to date, it is even getting lower as temperatures warm up here in BC. Great review guys, this car will only get better with software updates which will come:) EV6 is a tad better w efficiency due to design. The fit finish and design imho is way nicer than Tesla comparisons of Model Y and M3, not as fast in AWD form or as efficient but way more unique and better build quality imho. Cheaper to boot as well. So pick your poison!

I enjoyed this video, quite informative. From what I saw, an "oil" trip that takes about 12 hours with 2 breaks and fill-ups transforms into a two-day trip with an electric car due to charging times
. . . which means the same trip will end-up more than tripling on "electric" because now you need extra food, a hotel night and a full extra day to get to your destination.
Completely different story if the trip a leisure road-trip, of course.

I'm also a Canadian and the range in the cold scares me a lot. Every single weekend I drive 204km round trip. In -10 if it only has 290km range going only 110km/h that's not very good for me. Also I assume this is 290km from 100% charge? The car recommends you charge only to 80%.
Most people on the 401 will be incredibly aggressive if you're going as slow as 110. The defacto speed out here is 120 - 140. Factor in a headwind and I'm guessing this thing would struggle to hit the 200km range at a speed of 120 at -10c. That's really scary.
Also -10c isn't even that cold. That's like a normal winter day. It often gets down to -20 or below here.

I appreciate this window into doing a longer haul trip and having to bounce from charger to charger. The infrastructure has a long way to go. Your video harkens back to when everyone ran to Apple to be an early adopter of an MP3 player or pick up the original iPhones. Im thinking the emergence of EV constantly being dependable in all situations is still a ways away. Im thankful that we are all headed there globally because our planet cant handle the fossil fuel emissions anymore. Im holding my petrol car just for now until i feel safe that an EV can provide the existing 500 mile range I have in my Rx450h hybrid.

I have friends that own teslas here in regina, as for winter driving, they're good (couple had heating issues) , charging at home driving to work and around town. I do like the Ioniq 5, alot. I purchased the Model y for one main reason being in Saskatchewan, the charging infrastructure. Price wise, I would have chose the ioniq 5 if the charging infrastructure was better for non tesla EV's. I don't do winter road trips so 450km range is good, and if I had to travel I know the Tesla Superchargers would be reliable in comparison to the Petro Canada chargers which is questionable from what I've seen.

Thanks Mark, after watching Bjorn Nyland and Kris's channels on you tube, the consensus is do not use the climate controls until the car warms up the batteries in the cold (this includes summer when it is hot), you can usually see this on the charge levels. P.S. I believe Hyundia is going to fix this on their next software update. Yes many Petro Canada EV chargers are poorly maintained, I always use Plugshare to check on other user's experiences. I always use plug share when charging, leave comments on your charging session and regardless if good or bad so others may benefit. you got me to subscribe, I am a second EV owner, I still have my original 2019 Kia Soul EV (30KWH), loved it so much we needed a second car anyhow and Bought a 2020 Soul EV Limited (64KWH). My Hyundai Iconic 5 AWD Prefered long range Ultimate is due in in May, which we will trade the 2019 Soul EV. I had a KIA EV6 top trim GT line pack 2 on order it cam in 2 weeks ago and I still prefer the Ionic, for it's light interior, more space, more head room quieter etc, so my EV6 went to another KIA EV6 deposit holder. The EV6 is excellent but not my preference, had they had alight interior rather than always black I would likely have kept it. To bad Kia Canada has such a limited selection of interior colours, in USA you can dial in a light grey almost the same grey as the Ionic.

just to reiterate the Climate control also will warm or cool the batteries depending if they are too hot or too cold. This will hopefully also be updated on the next software update, where the car will give the batteries the preference, at least give you the choice.

The conclusion I can make from your experience with the Ionic 5 is great car for the city where charging can be done overnight, but best to use an ICE vehicle on long road trips to avoid the hassles of charging, with todays infrastructure for fast chargers. Would consider an EV when the charging stations are at every corner like gas stations in the present day. Currently have an Ioniq PHEV and think this is the best choice for the intrastructure of elecrtic chagers in Canada.

Also it’s very cold out there, and the battery needs to reach a certain ambient temperature before it’s safe to charge at a faster rate while maintaining battery health.

Ioniq 5 is known to suffer from very slow charging while it's cold. Hyundai is supposed to release an update that will change the behavior of the thermal management system, so that the battery can stay warmer in the winter. That should allow it to reach 200-240 kW, like it does in the summer, but might reduce the range, since now the heater will have to work harder.

Thanks for the great info and videos. I loved the brief Lords of Waterdeep glimpse. That's not a game you happen into playing if you're not a board game geek, and I like seeing the crossover into that world. I wish there were more board game places like that near us.

I’m going to preorder when available again but your video is a perfect example that EVs are still a pain when driving long distance and the only car in the family. I own a ram that I still use for everyday driving but I want a second vehicle must be EV to drive around town. I’d be easily able to crunch that trip in two days in my ram vs 3-4 days in ioniq. Ioniq is perfect as a second vehicle though. Anyone claiming that EVs will replace ICE vehicles anytime soon is out of mind. Hybrids are the answer.

Great video and very informative! The coolest part though for me was discovering that you were driving the through the storm around Truro the same time I was. The truck off the road on the exit - I drove by that on my trip to Halifax that same day! Small world. Thanks Mark for the video.

Great ad for "not" getting one of these EVs... just yet. Not completely because of the deficiencies of the vehicle, but the woefully lacking charging station availability. I think that the good news is that by the time the charging infrastructure becomes "usable", there will be some amazingly good EVs. Really enjoy the video... "most of it".

How much does it cost you in Canada to fully charge your battery 🔋 from 0% to 100% at one of those charging stations ?

Excellent road trip video. And a real test of the car in those conditions. (Conditions we will never see in the UK!). Unfortunately this car "cold-gates" anyway. It does not have effective battery conditioning to warm the battery up, and so even when plugged in to a suitable charger, it tends to max out at 120kW in cold conditions. Its maximum charge rate even in summer temperatures (20-25 degC) is limited by Hyundai at present to about 220kW. That is still plenty fast enough!

This car confused the heck out of me. It looks like a small hatchback but sitting inside it i could see the gigantic size you have. Its much bigger than a Q4 E-Tron. Price is incredible and all extra equipment you can buy is very very cheap compared to Tesla, Ford and Audi. I can totally understand why it has won so many EV prizes but im not sold on the design...... or i would insta buy this.

In the Tesla or Polestar 2 you just enter your destination and the car will figure everything out. The legacy automakers are just lagging behind with their software. Not a shortcoming of electric cars.

I have couple of KIA's (eniro esoul), with 64kwh batterypack. Range when outside temp is +10C is about 500KM (400 in winter), tell me how it is possbile that new models like IONIQ5 or KIA EV6 have about 400KM range? Consumption seems significantly higher in new models, and thats not good. Ill stick with older models, at least to the point they are still avaiable to buy.

Sounds so stressful wondering if you’d make it to the next charge and then they didn’t work well if at all. Cute car and love your clips though. Not sure how you manage on the cold waiting all that time for it to charge or me in Australia in 36oC heat waiting for the charge up.
