Dr. Luke is good (won't talk about the Kesha thing, just his music), but he only brings fantastic hits when the lyrics are written by someone else. In Katy's case, it was the Luke/Bonnie mix what helped her to establish in the industry. She needed to upgrade that. I agree she didn't need Luke but not because he is a bad producer (and a terrible person, yes), but because she needed a new sound. Max Martin and Stargate would've helped her with finding a new sound.

I’ve never been a fan, personally, Katy is very much not my artist, but even I can easily sit here and say that she’s generally been a much wiser and smarter artist in these regards. I did at least manage to vibe with her self-aware sense of cringe, and at least find it fun, even dunking on her in a light hearted kind of way. This one just… I feel like it just lacks of any real Katy Perry-ness. There’s no cleverly shameless FUN to it, it just feels like a weak attempt at a more old-school pop anthem that she became known for, and it really just feels to me sort of like she’s lost a sense of authenticity in trying to stay as herself, bc that sense of herself is a version from 10 years ago that we know she HAS shown growth past it. Smile isn’t perfect, but I do think it showed a lot of growth from the past, whilst still feeling very Katy Perry. It feels like a regression to me, I guess.

I was expecting WAY WAY more from the music video. I was hoping that it was going to have a really trippy sci fi element to it, like sort of like how Bad Blood by Taylor Swift did, maybe in the woman's world everyone was upgraded that's why she wore those cyborg legs, but instead we got this whatever mess of a video. Honestly, I hate to see her crash and burn this badly because she was really such a famous and good artist, but I have no idea how she just really missed the mark here.

This was supposed to be her big comeback with her long black hair and upbeat pop banger after critical acclaim came back with PLAY and her spotify listeners nearly doubled organically over the last couple years. Me and many other KCs were disappointed at how short the song was. That is very out of touch for her. Also the chorus is very repetitive and loses momentum with the ahas. The production in the verses is recycled from Prisms "This Moment" and you're right it is a rip off of Stupid Love. Sometimes I wonder who allows these songs for big artists with potential to get approved and released. Like, the average Joe could have taken this song and made it slap. It suffers from the some thing WIG did when the 2nd chorus lost momentum and the song ended abruptly. Yes, Zedd would have been perfect to work with as he is probably the most uncontroversial producer in the industry and he and Katy work well together. This song is not bad but not lead single material. Oh well. Let's hope 143 has a later single that hits harder and brings it home.

Hot City deserves as much if not more attention as 143 will probably get when it releases in September
She could have worked with Cirkut too. His sound is very similar to Luke's, since he was mentored by him. Cirkut co-produced "Roar", "Part of Me" and many others, he was literally the one who came up with the "Dark Horse" instrumental, and he has been producing some hits lately, like "Seven" by Jungkook and "Unholy" by Sam Smith.

After seeing countless videos poping up in my recommended about katy falling off, I didn't know that she had a new song out nor was I interested. But as soon as the music video ended I sat down for a good minute like this 😑. Even if it was claimed to be so called "satire" the poor lyrics that accompanied the stange music video doesn't comply with that vision. It truly felt like women across the world caught a stray bullet because of this terribly executed feature.
The satire thing felt like a copout unless she thinks it’s funny the song itself being produced by someone who legally entrapped a woman… I’m not even a woman but I felt insulted on your behalf.

I searched up the snippets that she played on live and I’m genuinely worried for her career, this could be her last chance at rekindling the success she had in the 2010’s, and it’s not looking good, as much as I want to like the song and snippets, they suck, she needs to go back to the studio and rework the album.

Thanks so much for an honest review. As a total Katy Perry fan, I have to say that I was shocked (and not for the better) by Katy Perry's recent deterioration. It's just a mess that screams a lazy cash grab or attention grab. The close-ups on Katy's boobs are cringe. The woman's world empowerment lyrics are cringe. The fact that Katy worked with Dr. Luke, of all people, is cringe, and that's not a kind gesture towards Kesha. The song even has SIX co-writers, and I can't help but wonder how six people could mess up so bad. With Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, and others producing their weakest works lately, I can't but think that fame goes to some superstars' heads and that they begin to eventually believe that they walk on water. Why bother to try, when everyone is going to listen anyway? It just feels like superstardom breeds laziness later on. It's a shame. I love Katy.
When she was teasing KP6 last year, I was genuinely excited. But agreed on most points. I do think that when people experience a peak, it’s hard to overcome the temptation to try and top it by either completely ignoring everything people loved about you or leaning too hard into it. It’s tough, but it’s also no excuse to work with someone who much of the industry (Bebe Rexha, Kelly Clarkson, Kesha, and others have spoken about Luke’s shady/mean/abusive tactics) and world recognize as an abuser.
What Katy Perry should have done was taken a break after the Witness album and not released Smile. Then she should have merged the best songs from the Smile album with the best songs off the 143 album to produce a much better album.
I wondered if she really worked with Dr. Luke doja cat said she didn't work with him for planet her yet somehow his name was on the producing credits and she was mad that he was profiting off her work that he didn't contributeanything to. And I believe doja because she's showed us her making music and beats by herself on her instagram so I wonder if katy was in the same situation were luke came in at the end and slapped his name on it. Katy did say that she signed a bunch of artist and was managing them in the 2010s yet somehow they were also signed to Dr. Luke even though they were her artist's the music industry contracts are just so shady and difficult to comprehend so I'm not surprised katy perry a high school dropout is getting manipulated by the industry

I’ve never been a fan, personally, Katy is very much not my artist, but even I can easily sit here and say that she’s generally been a much wiser and smarter artist in these regards. I did at least manage to vibe with her self-aware sense of cringe, and at least find it fun, even dunking on her in a light hearted kind of way. This one just… I feel like it just lacks of any real Katy Perry-ness. There’s no cleverly shameless FUN to it, it just feels like a weak attempt at a more old-school pop anthem that she became known for, and it really just feels to me sort of like she’s lost a sense of authenticity in trying to stay as herself, bc that sense of herself is a version from 10 years ago that we know she HAS shown growth past it. Smile isn’t perfect, but I do think it showed a lot of growth from the past, whilst still feeling very Katy Perry. It feels like a regression to me, I guess.

This was supposed to be her big comeback with her long black hair and upbeat pop banger after critical acclaim came back with PLAY and her spotify listeners nearly doubled organically over the last couple years. Me and many other KCs were disappointed at how short the song was. That is very out of touch for her. Also the chorus is very repetitive and loses momentum with the ahas. The production in the verses is recycled from Prisms "This Moment" and you're right it is a rip off of Stupid Love. Sometimes I wonder who allows these songs for big artists with potential to get approved and released. Like, the average Joe could have taken this song and made it slap. It suffers from the some thing WIG did when the 2nd chorus lost momentum and the song ended abruptly. Yes, Zedd would have been perfect to work with as he is probably the most uncontroversial producer in the industry and he and Katy work well together. This song is not bad but not lead single material. Oh well. Let's hope 143 has a later single that hits harder and brings it home.

K, let me put my two cents in it:
One - the fact that two of her best deep cuts, Hummingbird Heartbeat (produced by Tricky Stewart) and Walking on Air (produced by Klas Ahlund in collboration with Max Martin) ARE NOT produced by Dr. Puke, and either of them could be dropped as a single and tagged onto her upcoming record and it still would be its biggest hit, speaks volumes as to why she should have never ever come back to the "alleged" abus3er in the first place
Two - Woman's World in its current state and form feels like a deformed fetus of a track, not a fully fledged song - the insipid, tired, brain-numbing lyrics in the verses which feel like generated by the AI after you put the command "write TikTok-ready female empowerment anthem in style of the early 2010s pop music into ChatGPT", the chorus which is catchy but doesn't explore the concept in anyway and repeats itself with the intention of getting drilled into your head, and the uninteresting production which feels dry, sterile and devoid of any pulse... We live in the post-Brat world, this Kim Petres reject dance production won't do anymore, we expect our electrodance pop music to be at least a little more daring. If it's telling enough, I would rather listen to Chillin With You by Britney (i mean Myah Marie) than this song 10 times in a row, as the fomer, while still being an awful track, has at least some sort of interesting production and definitely had a thought put behind it... Ah Katy, you never learn... Anyway, stream Joyride by Kesha, Stupid Love by Gaga AND Walking on Air by Katy.
PS. I heard a snippet of her another new song "I'm his, he's mine" and it's even worst, maybe the worst song i've ever heard...

She does things to be goofy, which is fine on its own, but she’s missing the part where satire actually has something to say. A better treatment for the video might see her and the other equally hot, skinny women being cyborgs programmed by men in suits, thus showing how this hollow “feminist” song is actually being orchestrated by men trying to make money. But her retroactively calling it “satire” and saying it’s all sarcastic and slapstick doesn’t make it good.

This is approbation of feminist topics (from the 1980s) with the sole purpose of making money - thus declaring millions of fans not smart enough to know the difference. It’s basically a time capsule of the peak sound from then with her song writing that elevates the song even more. Rewind Your Heart is such a good example of this.

What still annoys me about "Roar" and EVERYBODY oversees this somehow: It heavily grabs from Sara Bareilles' "Brave", which PERRY HERSELF tweeted about beore "Roar". Brave still gets comments about being a plagiate when it was the first one to release. I'm not a "hater" or anything, I enjoy some songs like Dark Horse genuinely, but I feel she was just overhyped for a long time and never that personally involved as everyone thought.

I searched up the snippets that she played on live and I’m genuinely worried for her career, this could be her last chance at rekindling the success she had in the 2010’s, and it’s not looking good, as much as I want to like the song and snippets, they suck, she needs to go back to the studio and rework the album.

Thanks so much for an honest review. As a total Katy Perry fan, I have to say that I was shocked (and not for the better) by Katy Perry's recent deterioration. It's just a mess that screams a lazy cash grab or attention grab. The close-ups on Katy's boobs are cringe. The woman's world empowerment lyrics are cringe. The fact that Katy worked with Dr. Luke, of all people, is cringe, and that's not a kind gesture towards Kesha. The song even has SIX co-writers, and I can't help but wonder how six people could mess up so bad. With Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, and others producing their weakest works lately, I can't but think that fame goes to some superstars' heads and that they begin to eventually believe that they walk on water. Why bother to try, when everyone is going to listen anyway? It just feels like superstardom breeds laziness later on. It's a shame. I love Katy.
When she was teasing KP6 last year, I was genuinely excited. But agreed on most points. I do think that when people experience a peak, it’s hard to overcome the temptation to try and top it by either completely ignoring everything people loved about you or leaning too hard into it. It’s tough, but it’s also no excuse to work with someone who much of the industry (Bebe Rexha, Kelly Clarkson, Kesha, and others have spoken about Luke’s shady/mean/abusive tactics) and world recognize as an abuser.
