We show you how to change primary fluid on a 2003 Harley Davidson Dyna. Includes every step from oil drain to fill, checking levels and tools to do the job. We used MOTUL primary oil for this job and the process will be similar on most Twin Cam Dyna models, check your manual for specifics.

Thank you! ...for a straight-forward, how-to video, by someone who actually knows what they're doing (unlike the 100's of wannabes on youtube).
I just bought a 2004 FXDWG with about 6K miles and, being about as green as Marvin Martian with Harleys, that's exactly what I needed to see - no more, no less. I appreciate the clear, concise iteration and instruction as well as the professional quality of the video. Simple and to the point. Thank you.
Glad we could help. Feel free to reach out with any questions you may have.
you are so cool
Thank you for answering my question on primary oil level
Thank you, buying my first harley tomorrow and this video is a good helper. Thanks lot again and happy riding my man.
Thanks man
- Patrick

Really enjoy these how to videos. Thanks!
Thanks really great information and you made it easy. Cheers!
Thanks for the straight up simple to understand video!!!
Thanks for the video, very straightforward and complete!
Does the bike need to be standing or can it be on the side stand?
lol i have a 92 fxdb. ive changed the derby gasket 1 time lol
I have a 2003 superglide. there is a black o ring in the grove around where the derby cover goes. I see yours does not have this. which one should you use? the paper style or the rubber o ring?
I bought a 2003 wide glide with a mileage of 3500 miles. I do not know what oil was flooded, but if from the factory it is probably synthetic. Can it be replaced with a mineral one? What is better?
How many ounces of primary fluid? The reason I ask is I bought my Wide Glide 05 from a non Harley Davidson dedicated dealer and since I’ve owned it it’s hard to get into N and missed first to second a bit. I drained out the fluid after I did an internal clutch adjustment and definitely more than a quart came out I put Amsoil primary fluid in one quart as I’m doing other things to it and didn’t put derby cover back on until I know if the quart was enough. Thanks
If you have to use Teflon, I suggest using liquid Teflon instead of tape, as tape can get inside and cause damage.
Is there a torque spec on the drain plug ? Can’t find anything solid for that. 14-21 foot pounds ?
J&P Cycles i have a question i hope you can answer me.
I will buy my first HD a 2002 Dyna low rider next week, i am bit worried about the parts availability for older models, i want to try the old school carb HD, but do you think in more 10 years i can find parts to mantain my HD running?
Best regards.
André Louro yes easily. I’m restoring a 1956 Triumph Pre Unit and I can easily find parts for that bike. Harley Davidson parts are super available everywhere. Don’t have that be a reason not to buy a Harley.
hope you've had good luck with your low rider.. .. I bought one brand new in 1999 and when the speedo quit workin a couple years ago it had 106,593 miles and by now it's prob over 115 or so.... yea so far she has been a real workhorse... only non routine issues to date was a known recall on a cam bearing that went out and a drive belt (prob from riding rough gravel roads)... oh and a stator.... still runnin like a champ but she's definitely starting to get tired so these days i dont hot rod her keeping the rpm to no more than 2500k, occasionally 3k....
It would be nice it these mechanics woukd tell everyone the weight and type of oil is used for each application. What do you think?
That's a very simple answer. You can use the same oil in all 3.
How many ft/lbs of torque on that drain plug
30-60 in/lb 4.1-6.8 N/m
Thanks bro great information👍
New to motorcycles my dad recently gifted me his bike. On the title it says fxdci, is that a super glide custom injected? Everyone I ask says something different
Great vid. Thanks!👍🏽🤙🏽
What if you don’t ride that much how often should you change it once a year?
I thought you would adjust the clutch push rod while you were there?
Blue Loctite on the Derby Screws? I have a 18 1200C. Used a Teflon Pipe Sealant(Tube) from a national Home Center when I hit 1k miles. Need to change mine before Winter.
Blue loctite = cheap insurance. Being 500 miles from home with a leaky derby cover is no bueno .
Do all torque wrenches have inch pounds? I have seen foot pounds.. but.. ? not sure?
Can I do this on the kick stand or has to be on a lift?
What kind of oil for the primary?
I have an 01 wide glide. My question here would be about the plug installation. In my manual it calls for the plug to be tightened to be projecting 4mm below the chain case. Does that mean when it’s sticking out or below as in past flush and inside the hole. When it’s out it’s still hand loose. If it’s supposed to be tight at that point I may have a problem.
it should project down 4.1-4.6 below the primary. So measure from the cover where it threads in, to the top of the screw head. Is there an o-ring on your drain plug?
I liked your video so I subscribed.
Nice video, thanks.
Does this have anything to do with the engine oil? Getting ready to change the primary gasket and change the oil
No, the primary fluid is separate from engine oil
can you please explain what does this primary mean? i have 125 cc bike and it only needs 1 type of oil for everything..
Totally different setups. Your bike will have the clutch mounted on the end of the crank. The clutch basket has a gear on the backside, which mates to the primary shaft on the transmission. Harleys have a sprocket on the crank, with a chain going back to the clutch.
What grade oil and how much oil
All your fluid change videos are spot on man! Thanks so much!!!
Good vid thanks guys
is the same for an fxdx 2002?? thanks
I had my 2000 Dyna FXDWG straight up & down & it took just a hair under 2 quarts before it was right at the bottom of my derby cover.... way more than 26 ounces... do I need to go back out & drain a quart out????
Did you find an answer to this I sent to change my primary fluid today and ordered another quart I noticed the same thing
The owner's manual for a 1999 FXD calls for 26 oz. of transmission fluid which is nowhere near the visual clues some videos mention.
What weight oil😮
What weight primary oil do I need for 2001 Dyna
www.jpcycles.com/product/200-4225/motul-rsd-synthetic-primary-chaincase-oil-quart
What about for a 2019 street bob?
What brand of oil?
Fully synthetic?
20w50?
The mobil one v-twin is really good oil. Expensive, but very good quality, and check owner's manual for viscosity.
What if you can’t have the bike straight up n down for the oil change but on its kick stand? How many quarts does it take?
It takes the same amount, you need to have it straight up and down so you can get it all in the primary. If you don't you will short yourself on fluid.
Hi bro how are you
My 2000 FXDL has a T30 primary drain plug. Be careful when you're working blind.
Who fluid did you use? Is it specific to the primary?
Click the link in the description...MOTUL Primary Oil.
Bud Milza Thank you. I overlooked that.
Please... Do not follow his example when using your torque wrench. Once you've set the desired pressure ONE CLICK ONLY. More clicks adds to the pressure.
Well
Shit I need a lift and seat lol
...wow a 100lb torque on the small screws that's a lot..... ps I'm not a HD owner....
100 INCH pounds.....not 100lbs. Big difference.
About 12 foot pounds
That was 100 inch pounds not foot lbs
any one know my primary is leaking oil from bottom by drain plug. i changed gasket but no luck.
mabey warped primary case?
87 fxr
thanx
You may need a bit of teflon tape on the drain plug threads or a new o-ring on the plug. Also, check to make sure its not leaking from your derby cover and running down.
@@jpcycles thank you man!!!
not the derby. underneath by plug.
thought might be warped prim cover.
@@dannybam1 ever figure out what it was? My bike is doing the same
@@josephdailey7170 hi Joe thanx
I tried to put Teflon tape on the drain plug on the bottom that didn't really work I change the gasket but I use the kind of shity gasket I'm going to try a better gasket and if that's not it then the primary cover might be warped??
or the drain plug screw is no good I'm not sure but I will take the primary cover off and check it out see if it's warped or not first sometimes heate could cause it to warp I'm not sure
It might just be what JP cycles said in the reply an O-ring
I didn't even check that on my drain plug in or around the drain plug every check yours
take the derby off first
