Thanks. As simple as that is, it's nice to see that in action for us Harley newbies so there's no guessing or uncertainty on anything. Now I'm no less than 100% comfortable with finding the right bolt for draining. Likewise with your video on changing the primary fluid and gasket.
Great video. Thank you so much. Being a new harley owner myself (02' FXDL) this is great. So when changing the oil, you don't have to change the primary and transmission oil at the same time right?
I don’t get why people and even Harley mechanics say 2.5-3qts of oil for an oil and filter change. That is wrong. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen over filled Dynas with guys putting close to 3qts in. The service manual states “2.5qts”. It does not state in between that. If you need a lot more than 2.5qts, something is not right. In the manual again, it states “3qts” if this is a brand new engine that has never had a drop of oil in it. I don’t get the confusion, and hate seeing wrong info spread and bikes messed up by that.
@@joshuacruz4046 the drain plug is located on the kick stand side means this is the lowest point. You are good to go for the engine oil change on the jiffy. But it is more convinient to have the bike level since you get more space to place the drain pan. Preloading of the filter is not required, the manual does not mention it at all (it is on the return flow). For the transmission oil change though you need to be level (according to the manual)
My 2016 wide glide is all messed up. The engine oil drain bolt doesn't drain the engine oil and none of the accessories that Harley Davidson offers for it. Fit it
About half way up the dipstick is the manufactures suggested range (marked on dipstick). If you fill it to the top it would be overfull. Generally it will make the motor more sluggish. But more importantly it will find a way out. It could burn off but more than likely it will it will come out the breather bolts in the heads, then into the air cleaner and blow down the side of the bike.
No mention of properly warming up the oil, or checking the oil after it's warmed up, also no mention of should the bike be upright or on the kick stand.

Very helpful for this first time Harley owner thank you
I really appreciate this video, first time working on this bike, you saved me a lot of time.
Glad we could help. Love to hear that people are working on their own machines.
Great explanation on how to do some simple maintenance on my Harley.
Great video. Thank you so much. Being a new harley owner myself (02' FXDL) this is great. So when changing the oil, you don't have to change the primary and transmission oil at the same time right?
no, generally those are recommended at 5000 miles
You don't need to pre load the filter. It's on the return flow of the oil. Less mess.
Were the manual were not real clear. The video was very helpfully. Thanks
I really enjoy changing the oil. I do it at least once a week.
That's not nearly often enough. You're going to fuck up your bike.
243wayne1 Dang, man! Guess I’m going to have to go on the daily. Or learn to do it while riding down the road. Probably need a sidecar.
Lol
You must have dirty oil I do it at the very least everyday. Sometimes when I have free time I do it every hour.
Love your videos. Simple and to the point. Perfect!
Done in 5minutes. HD charging how much for that?

Old Roy Wilson I was wondering why people said that as well!
@@Dmt715wisco so you guys never go past 2.5 qts ?
2.5 is normal change, 2.9 after engine rebuild.
2.5 not counting the oil you put in filter?
@@dirkdiggler2430 2.5. with the new filter in place. No need to prime the filter since it is on the return line.
A good Tip for the filter is put a piece of cardboard under the filter so it’s got a lil run off ramp so you don’t get oil all over your motor :)
Just bought my first harley this is a very informative video
Thank you for your guide! It's really simple for understanding and helpful! BR from Russia ✌️
Thanks for the instruction. I am curious what was done to the engine.
Hi ... thank you for the video
Question.. does your bike needs to be in level position to do this or you can do the oil change on the kick stand?
Did you find out
@@joshuacruz4046 the drain plug is located on the kick stand side means this is the lowest point. You are good to go for the engine oil change on the jiffy. Do y’all sell just a kit to buy all of this at once?
Ok thanks for the heads up!🙏😎
what oil and filter should i be using for my 06 dyna low rider?
Does this video also work for a 2009 super glide custom?
how many miles do i wait for next oil change ??? San Diego Harley Dealership said 2K ??? AND where did you get that oil wrench strap tool ???
3000 miles is pretty standard. Wrench link -> www.jpcycles.com/product/7400007/j-p-cycles-oil-filter-strap-wrench
Can I use the same oil (20w 50) on primary, transmission and engine?
Yes you can.
You say just above halfway do you test drive it and then check it again
Thanks for the vid..Is the drain plug in the same place on a 1998 Dyna Wide Glide?
yes back of the pan
So where the shifter on this bike because my 08 Cvo Dyna has the shifter in front of the filter.
You had the bike straight up is it ok to change while leaning on the kick stand?
Only need to stand it up to make sure you drain all the oil.
My 2016 wide glide is all messed up. The engine oil drain bolt doesn't drain the engine oil and none of the accessories that Harley Davidson offers for it. Fit it
no oil comes out?
Is the dipstick pushed in fully to check proper oil level ? 2000 Twin Cam engine. Some videos show just setting it in place. Which is correct ????
I check mine with the plug resting on the outside of the engine case
@@Paul-lb1uw Thank you :) :)
arent you the guy from fuel moto too?
Good lesson well taught and the music is gett'n busy
If you increase the height of the rear shocks to raise your bikes height does this affect the dip stick reading when on the kick stand?
a little, but it should still be within range on the dipstick.
I have a 09 st bob why is my oil not coming all out ?
great tutorial
Do I need to let it run for a few minutes prior to draining?
Any vehicle should be warm before you change the oil. If for no other reason than it makes the oil come out a lot faster ;-)
thank you
Why is the dip stick only half way full?? What happens if you fill it up all the way? Is it to much oil for such a small engine
About half way up the dipstick is the manufactures suggested range (marked on dipstick). If you fill it to the top it would be overfull. Generally it will make the motor more sluggish. But more importantly it will find a way out. It could burn off but more than likely it will it will come out the breather bolts in the heads, then into the air cleaner and blow down the side of the bike.
notice the lean of the bike on the kickstand. when the bike is up straight the line on the dip stick will rise.
I've got a fdx 05 is the drain plug in the same location as this ??
Yes
Can you guys do a transmission oil change for sporsters? Thank you.
Is it that important to run the bike before changing fluids?
Putting some heat in the engine can help the fluid drain easier if the bike has been sitting a while.
Correction, don't put your sump plug back in until you've put the new filter on, do it like this you'll still have dirty oil in there
MOTUL!🤙
how is this done with forward controls?
Just above half way??? You better fill it to the top of the stick dude! These bikes use oil come on now
Damn right. Always check it hot after a ride and make sure it is at the F mark.
wrong when the bike is cold it should read about half to 3/4 the way up the dip stick, too much will cause havoc
2 whole dollars for some paper? Cmon man! Its convenient no doubt but damn 2 dollars? Couldn’t just charge cents on the dollar?
No mention of properly warming up the oil, or checking the oil after it's warmed up, also no mention of should the bike be upright or on the kick stand.
Fill in the gaps cry baby
🇺🇸
Ditto
Does the bike need to be hot to change the oil?
no it does not. If the oil is warm it will flow out better but if the bike is hot it will be tough to work in.
