  • I found this 1954 Mercury 4 door sedan while cruising through my local Facebook barter sites. Story goes that the mans father drove it home roughly 100 miles from an auction and the car basically sat for 30 years after that. Lets see if we can get the old Y-block V8 to fire up once again. This car is SOLD! As always, thanks for watching!

Don’t fight the fuel tanks. I modified an old electric concrete mixer with arms and straps to tie the tank to it. Dump a couple of handfuls of self tapping screws and sharp steel stuff in it, add some paint thinner or mineral spirits, cap the holes, and let her tumble all night. Rinse it out when clean, use a magnet to pull out the sharp steel tumbling media. Keep up the fight, Mortske

I always use an old roto-rooter with a couple pounds of ball bearings to do pretty much the same thing, it does a great job and is a lot easier than trying to get it cleaned out with chemicals ( and not to mention it's not as hazardous to your health ) the good thing about the roto-rooter is I didn't have to modify it since it has the easy-release drum,
I just made a separate attachment for it out of an old 20" bike wheel and some angle iron and it is also great for mixing up 5 gallon buckets of paint or polyurethane for when I have to repaint the shop and reseal the back deck.

    that phrase
" always check your wheels "
    you couldn't be more right...
I recently had a problem with my pop-up camper trailer that exemplifies the importance of that...
But, mine didn't have any issues with being tight...
in fact I still had to take the lugnuts off with a 4-way to put the spare on....
I put a pair of borrowed tires/wheels on my pop-up because after 8 years at the deer lease on the Arkansas River the wheels didn't have any rubber left on them....
being a smart man I torqued them down and drove 12 miles to town and back and re-checked them...
they were still good so I started off on my 375 mile trip...
I was about a third of the way to the destination when my pop-up started bouncing like it had a blowout ....
I pulled over and got the shock of my life....
the tire was NOT FLAT ....
it was on the side of the road about 1/4 mile behind me...
now, remember that I said that I still had to unbolt it...
The tire was still inflated and the lugs were tight ...
and i know what you are thinking, no, the hub did not come off
    THE RIM ITSELF FAILED....
the outer ring actually separated from the center disc at 75mph.... the wheel had apparently been welded by Stevie Wonder and had come apart at the welds...
I'm over 40 years old and have been around cars and the race track my entire life and That is the first time I have ever seen a rim separate in that way without having over 400 hp trying to do a burn-out on it.
this was on a GUTTED and empty pop-up camper that weighs less than 1700lbs before the cabinets and other stuff got stripped out....
THE REALLY SCARY THING IS THE WHEEL WAS ON THE FRONT OF A DAILY DRIVEN 2012 VW BEETLE WHEN I BORROWED IT....
The guy I borrowed it from said his wife has been driving it to work every day and me borrowing it probably saved her life because she doesn't go under 75 mph on the interstate to get to work....
    Dumb luck or God intervening?
    Make your own choice.
mine says that the word luck is just us not knowing what the truth is and giving it a generic name.

One of the cars of my youth. From 1950 (the year I was born) until late into the Sixties Dad drove FOMOCO. Flatheads and Y-blocks were the order of the day. It’s the reason for me loving the old Fords so much. Okay, I’ve got a soft spot for the older pre tri-five chevy’s as well. I hope, the person that ends up with the Merc keeps it inside out of the elements and is able to show it off with pride.

The metal coil in the tank was to keep the gas filler nozzle centered, and prevent them from slipping out and surprising the customer who was smoking while filling up. Looks like that one came loose in 1966. It's good to see you trying to save this old Merc. Harder and harder to find them now. Cheers.

I really like that year mercury. The tail lights look so sleek and more modern than other cars of the year. I dig almost any of the early 50s "jet age" cars. So many neat styling cues with out the over the top fins of the later 50s. Another sweet spot for me is just past the big fins into the early 60s but still very jet /aviation inspired ..like early 60s t-birds. My opinion.

Back in 1967 my good friend Rob lived next door. His dad was a mechanic for a chevy dealer and Rob was mechanical minded just like his father. The family didn't have much money to spare (8 kids), so when Rob was 14 his dad bought him a 54 Merc that wasn't running in order to get the kid a car cheap that Rob could fix up by the time he turned 16. They had a large garage with all the car tools anyone would need, remember his dad is a mechanic. The trans (yes, mercomatic) wasn't working at all, so Rob pulled it out. After a month or so I went over to see Rob while he was in the garage working on the Merc. He had the trans completely taken apart, it looked like a thousand different pieces. All kinds of different springs, bebes, rods, plungers, nuts, bolts, washers, filters and you name it! I was a mechanical guy (later an engineer) myself, but I looked all those pieces all over the place in different pans and tubs, and I though I would never want to take on that job, I'll just stick to manual transmissions. I though how will 14yo Rob ever get this pile of stuff back together. But then I though again, it's Rob he can do it. He did it, it took him two years. He got the trans back together and repaired a few other things all with out much from dad.

My neighbor had a 67 Cougar sitting in her driveway under a tarp my entire life. It belonged to her son who had passed away, so she wouldn't sell it. It had been under a tarp and the windows were covered, so the interior was damn near perfect. It had 34K on it. I tried numerous times to buy it, but she wouldn't sell. I worked for a large auto parts retailer at the time, and one day a guy came in buying parts for a '67 Cougar. I asked him where he got it from. He got it from my neighbor. Guess how much he paid for it. 100 fucking dollars! He had been trying to buy it as well, and she just sold to him one day for $100. He had to put about $4000 into it, but he drove it up and let me see it run a few months later. I repeat....she sold this car in 2010 for $100 after I had been trying to buy it, and had offered her a lot more for it. I guess he caught her on the right day.

I tried to buy it from him for years and I would have given him a fair price bc the car had no rust and the interior was in excellent condition. He ended up selling it to a stranger for way less than I would have paid for it! 🤬

@@kimberlywilliams9757 Back in the early 80's, my brother bought a '69 Tempest. It was a really nice car except that every time he wanted to start it - he had to crawl
under and jiggle or tap on the shims on the starter.....but, it always ran. He said that he paid $175 for it - bought it from a girl he knew in high
school. When he went to pay for it, he asked her why she was selling it for only $175 ?? Her reply, "Well....I never had $175 before......" !

Loved this episode. That old Merc is sweet. Can't believe the floors were still there. Back in the 50s when I was a kid my Dad bought a new 57 Merc Turnpike Cruiser station wagon. Red and white. It was good looking and would haul ass . That Merc you have has a lot of potential. Thanks for putting extra time, effort and parts into it to get it in running condition. I also love the 55 Fords but the 57 was sharp. Robert Mitchum drove a black one in the movie Thunder Road as a moonshine runner.

Hey Mortske like your videos on all these oldies and wrecks. My moms first car was a 56 mercrury Montclair and she got it in '58 she loved that car Jet, Black with a red leather interior it was a tank and my dad kept that old Y block running like a clock.....she had it for almost 20 years before she finally gave it up. Sold it to a kid who was going to run it in demolition derbys : ) said it was perfect for what he wanted....he was sure right about that built like a tank : )

Loved the car. Loved the video. Mondays don’t come around soon enough. Well, maybe for you they do.
Never known of anyone with the depth and breadth of knowledge that you have regarding cars and trucks from the eras that you do. Especially at your relatively young age.
Your videos are real. None of the polished, hyped up crap you see on these fast talking, super sparkly videos about cars, parts and modifications that are beyond the means of many shade tree mechanics with families, bills etc to deal with.
You show how it can be done with some basic hand tools and creativity. One of my other favorite You Tubers went the way of the glitz and quite frankly his schtick got old and the glitz ain’t cuttin it.
I like your grit, don’t change. If what you’re doing makes you happy, keep it up. I know you grumble here and there, but your excitement and pleasure when a project is finished while you’re behind the wheel is just as obvious.
Take ‘er easy mate. Keep the greasy side down!
