Man has the fields of heaven But soulless a Faery dies As a leaf that is old and withered And cold when the winter winds arise. Soon shall our wings be stilled And our laughter over and done So let us dance on the waves Let us dance in the sun. Soon shall our wings be stilled And our laughter over and done So let us dance on the waves Let us dance in the sun.

This truly is one of the most beautiful songs ever sung - I was not at all sure about Yeat's poetry being placed into song - But on this one occasion Mike Scott has worked a miracle. Can I suggest listening to this whilst stood on a high hill overlooking the rolling lands whilst the sun sets....Talk about being in the moment - and appreciating life before death takes us.... Soon Will our Wings Be Still.
There is a lot more to it than that. The poem seems to relate to the Sidhe who are lamenting their final fling with this world before surrendering Ireland to the Milisiens. That in itself is interestin, but all the more so when you consider Yeats was part of the Gaelic revival movement in Ireland at the start of the 20th century. Although a very ancient theme at the hearet of Ireland's recorded history in Leabhar Gabhála Éireann (The book of invasions), The work can also be related back to Irish culture and the language and where it now finds itself in modern times. It is a very subtle double whammy really and the stuff of genius. The poem takes the last days of the Sidhe and their loss to the Irish people and then parallels that in a modern context to the Irish people going through the same turmoil with the decline of Gaelic culture. How clever is that?

Bought the cd for in my car today online. The music is so beuatifull well done. I love the waterboys since The whole of the moon and this is the sea. The most underrated band of europe.
Interesting that Mike has over-dubbed himself as the echo. Katie comes in with that haunting wordless singing at the end -- the dirge (also over-dubbed). Very beautiful.
I am writing a book on supernatural creatures - one of which is the fairy- and came upon Yeats poems in doing so.I was absolutely amazed to see them on a Waterboys album. It has been a wonderful experience listening to them , from janet newland-janetasprocleae'''gmailacroo

Utterly beautiful. So glad I came across The Waterboys music in What we did on our Holiday.
So hauntingly beautiful this song
So let us dance on the waves, let us dance in the sun...

It is beautiful and a fitting tribute to Yeats, but don't you think other poems-songs on the album also work?
Spot on
I listened to this on a low hill not overlooking any rolling lands while the sun rose. It was really shit

Irish and Scot mingle in pure harmony
Such a euphoric cocktail!
Hélène d'Hervilly }}} A true Gaelic twinning...a sound shuffling of Celtic soul & spirit.!!!
Mystical agus Wonderment.!!
I don’t Know if D’Hervilly is your real name, but it’s beautiful. Hélène D’Hervilly sounds like heroin to me.
Beautiful duet just gorgeous from mike and Katie
Excellent execution. A gloriously tragic poem put to song by the great Mike Scott.
pure magic
Magical music

Mike Scott semms THE REENCARNATION OF MR. YEATS. I LOVE THEM". If Yeats would wake up, he would be Scott´s tribute

Sublime!
Beautiful xxx
Beautiful song, thanks so much for sharing!
There is no radiotation that pays attention to the waterboys in holland. The whole of the moon sometimes. But the "yeats" pieces are brilliant.
You nailed it
