Keep in mind that you cannot always apply for a passport from an EU country if you are of European descent. Dutch women, for example, did not pass on Dutch nationality until 1986 if the child acquired a nationality from the father.

    • @klodoob7615
      @klodoob7615 4 года назад

True! I was born in the Netherlands to an Italian father and Dutch mother and had always used my Italian passport when traveling but kinda thought I also had a Dutch passport, only why bother to get one because then you'd pay twice. When I was around 20 though I received a letter from the government telling me I should have had a verblijfsvergunning all those years and had basically been staying in the country illegally ;) (I ended up getting the Dutch nationality a couple of years later, so now I can choose which passport I would like to use)

Hi Joey, you missed a very important fourth option for US citizens, the Dutch-American Friendship Treaty (DAFT)
In short, these are the requirements
    1. US citizen needs to start a company in NL
    2. One needs to formally demonstrate sufficient (access to) funds, to provide for their selves while in NL and starting up
    3. I think there’s also a minimal capital requirement to invest into the business
Once a US citizen is approved, they’ll be granted a residency permit for 4 or 5 years, after that period a permanent one can be obtained
Google for the DAFT treaty and or visit the site of the Dutch Embassy in the USA.
Hope this allows you to make someone happy or at least provide some hopeful options ;-)

I was born in the Netherlands with an expat mother and a dutch father and I only lived there for two years and three months. I'm 14, and I have dual citizenship but because I didn't live for two years and 6 months in the Netherlands, I lose my dual citizenship when I turn 18, and we don't know if I can reapply because I would most likely have to chose my american citizenship logistics wise. a bit of extra clarity for those interested in the 30% ruling.......
30% ruling is a 30% tax break. You actually pay 70% in taxes. Just clearing that up because you said you pay only 30% in taxes. It also only lasts for 5 years and only if you stay in the NL. If you leave for 3 months and come back before your 5 years was up you can't re apply for it.
Thanks Joey for filling this social distancing time with fun little videos👏

One caveat with option one. If you move to the Netherlands as a EU citizen, you have to prove you can sustain yourself within 3 months (either with a job or because you are rich). Otherwise you can technically be deported (its not strictly enforced).

  • @JuanJ17

There is one more easy way, which is if you go study at a University, of course tuition for international students from non-EU countries is high, but it is an option if you can afford it. After you get your degree you get a chance to find a job and do the 2nd option that you mentioned :)

Its interesting to see the educational differences from my partner who did college/university in the Netherlands and the states and both cant really be compared because of the different systems. I am doing my masters program in the NL and it's way cheaper (I'll be under a type V visa I think) only a few thousand but a regular US citizen would may 16,000 which is the same price as my school here. It is all relative to where you go and what you study. I think people would just be happy to be in such a nice country 🥰 that's how I view it, even if it's more I'd pay it

Basically if you want to stay in the netherlands longer than 90 days, for example for college. You need to apply to get this visa so you can stay. If you dont have it you need to go, but you can only get it if you meet requirements and have an employer, schooling institute, ambassy or family member host you.
for example, you study here and you ask your school to give you a MVV so you can finish the education, or you work and you ask your employer etc.

Thanks for the video, I appreciate any tips on moving to the Netherlands I am pursuing the European ancestry option but don't think I will qualify. I came across the Dutch American Friendship treaty a few days ago on Reddit. DAFT, hopefully this can help some people, Self Employment though.
You will operate your business between the US and the Netherlands.
You will start a new business opportunity or a profession in which you have invested a substantial capital (€4500).
You have a valid travel document (for example a passport).
You are not a risk to public order and national security.
You have sufficient and long-term means of support
You must be able to make enough money after obtaining the Visa to stay off of Dutch welfare programs
You have not previously stayed in the Netherlands illegally.
You have not given false information or have withheld important information to support any previous applications.

I remember a US gay person seeking political asylum here, many years ago. He had to take it to the Dutch Supreme Court, but succeeded as the court ruled that he was being prosecuted for being gay in the USA. At the time, that was publicized here as it was quite unusual. So, that is the fourht way to get into this country since then. But please the Netherlands is quite full already. And it is certainly not the best country in the world. Maybe one of the best, but not the best. See all kinds of lists the UN produces. NL is generally top 10, not number 1 most of the time.
