4 IRON VS 4 HYBRID | WHAT THE NUMBERS SAY

- Today, I look at a club that was one of my favorites back in the day, the trusty 4 iron. Now I have gone to hybrids like most slow swing players. We look at the benefits of the hybrid. What will the difference be? I hope you enjoy!

What clubs should I compare next? What did you find interesting about this comparison?
Very informative! I purchased the hywood 3+ a few months ago after watching your review. I've retired my 3 wood (Adams tight lie) and love hitting the cleveland.
Videos like this with 5 and 6 irons vs their hybrid equivalente would be awesome to see.
Happy holidays btw!
@@sirramongabriel Thank you and thank you! More on the way!
I believe 5 hybrid and 6 hybrid vs 5i and 6i. Also 3W vs 4W vs 5W. If you only had to carry one, which one?
@@galemurphy4914 I like!
I now have a Ping 7 hybrid. Show people how easy it is to hit a hybrid, even over their middle irons.
Love your videos-keep them coming-you’re the best!!!
Thank you so much David! Much more on the way!
Dear Mistah Short Hitter, I really enjoy your videos. You are doing us a great service. Thank you so much.
That means a lot to me! Thank you so much!
Happy New Year Mistah! Looking forward to seeing your videos in '24 and putting your tips to test ASAP
Happy New Year to you!
This was great. I’m struggling with my choices in the 4 to 3 club range. Hybrid vs iron. These comparisons are very helpful. Keep doing them please.
Working on another today in dispersion with each club. Thank you!
Thanks for the video. This year i ended up taking the hybrids out and putting in utility irons with hybrid shafts. I gained about 20 yards, but each person is different.
Thank you for watching!
Great video. I have no hybrids and have been thinking of adding some to my bag. This was really helpful. Thanks
Thank you for watching!
Excellent review!
Thank you so much for the support!
I like the comparison. I did this with my 3iron replaced it with a 3hybrid!! I think my set is pretty much has been overhauled in the last 3 years!! Another great video hope you have a great start into the New Year!!🎆👍😀
Thank you so much! New video coming soon!
I just got a paradym X 6 & 5 hybrid. I took out my 6 & 5 irons. I will hold more greens because of the higher descent angle & I also get greater distance out of the two. No more long irons for me. It’s a no brainer 👍
Thank you Jason! Guaranteed lower scores!
just stumbled on your video, very well done, I think I will keep both in my bag...just depends on my day and which one I am hitting better...thanks for the insight!!
Thank you for watching!
I like the comparisons between different clubs.
Thank you!
Inside shots are helpful. Maybe not watching them all, but the shot trackers for sure helps put the numbers into context.
It would have been better if I didn't have audio issues. My mics went out on the indoor shots.
Nice consistency MSH
Thank you!
Nice review!
Thank you Tom!!
Thanks MSH. I am using a 4 hybrid and very happy with it. "Hit'em straight "
Arnold your the best!
I’m a hybrid guy from 5 up to 2. I like the inside and outside comparison. Thanks
Thank you so much!
Great video ❤❤❤
Thank you!
Great video, good data. Based on how hybrids are built (weight forward, low center of gravity) I believe you are on target a 4 hybrid = 3 iron…also because the hybrid club face has a spring effect (cor). However, from 170-180 yards out, I would never be able to hold the green, I just hope it rolls onto the green and stays. Thanks.
Thank you so much!
Good video. 5 hybrid would be closer to the 4 iron as you said. For me, the dispersion would be the deciding factor. I can hit 4 irons pretty high and a bit straighter than my 23 degree hybrid.
Thank you for watching!
I have a Mizuno iron set, but with 4, 5, and 6 hybrids. I missed my 5 iron so I bought one separately. I use it when I want to manipulate the ball flight, say, under a tree. I then added a Ping 430 5 wood, which is night and day easier to get airborne and at the target than either my 3 wood or my 4 hybrid. A very forgiving choice, but flies high, so back to the 5 iron in high wind.
Thank you for watching!
Good place to look is inside the bags of lpga tour prayers, almost none carry a 4i and they play from 6500 to 6700 yards
Thank you for watching! That is true.
If you could get hold of a Callaway Apex utility wood i think that would be a good test to do. It looks pretty much the same as a hybrid but the lie is flatter promtes more of a straight to fade shot. Good for people who do like hybrids but need more launch and peak height.
That would be great if I could get one. Thank you for watching!
I was using 4 iron then 3 hybrid but the hybrid just went too far and too low!
I've now ordered a 4 hybrid with adjustability so hopefully can dial in my gapping with my four iron.
Your video was super useful for me to get to a decision and great looking swing by the way 👍
Thank you so much!
My long irons were never good. I just got Ping i525 (5i- UW) and am now hitting my 5i good. My 5i carries 176 per shotscope on course overall is around 186-190 ( depending on conditions) I decided to go with a 4H I get 185 carry and usually overall around 195-200. For me the 4H is easier to hit I get better launch and stopping and it’s more versatile for my game and ability. Great video I really enjoy the content.
I appreciate it! Thank you so much!
Damn Mr. Short Hitter is right, but as long as you’re staying in the fairways and hitting greens keep it goin my dude!
Thank you for watching!
I’ve been watching guys at my club get new clubs almost every year for the last thirty years including all the jacked loft sets, bags full of wedges and hybrids, the latest high tech long drivers and golf balls, funky putters, range finders, you name it. Their handicap never changes. The guys that were 85 shooters in the early 90’s are indeed still 85 shooters. It’s quite rare to see any improvement without some type of dedicated swing change and course management strategy, but they won’t do it. They’ll just go blow thousands of dollars per year on gimmicky equipment and swing for the fences.
Thank you for watching!
So true. Just spend an hour or two a week dedicated to putting and 85 yards and closer. But most never do it. I play to a 2-3 handicap.
🤣True
Good job Bro! I thought you hit the 4 iron better on the course than inside ... It just seems that if there were more than 24 hours in the day for practicing you could tune that 4 iron to your advantage ... Thanks for sharing!
I just don't think I can ever hit it as high as I could with the 4 hybrid. Holding a green in the Summer would be difficult. Thank you for watching!
I went with a 4-iron instead of a hybrid, and I like it a lot better. I also put an I-crossover in the bag and I love it. I like irons better than hybrids.
Thank you for watching!
I replaced a 4i with a 24 degree hybrid and haven’t looked back. The hybrid is longer, higher and straighter. Just more consistent in general. I’m a 6 handicap and have played for almost 50 years.
Thank you for watching!
nice vid. Looks to me like you ought to carry BOTH clubs --- that's an excellent gap between the 4 iron and the 4 hybrid you have there
I have a 5 hybrid for the gap. Can't hold a green with the 4 iron. Thank you for watching!
I fill that gap with a 5 hybrid. I hit the 5 hybrid MUCH higher than a 4 iron and have no problem holding the green.
Seems like a pretty clear choice based on these numbers.
Thank you!
I,m playing a G430 .4 Hybrid, GD . R2 Shaft.. and it is consistently going 200 to 205 yrds... VC SCR 4 Launch monitor.. I,m 68 yrs . I,m even getting 180 -195 with the G430 5. HY .. they are unreal... my hcp 5..
Thank you!
Good vid thanks. I always smirk and shake my head when lower cappers disparage hybrids out of delusional status of their game. Many PGA pros use them for a reason.
Exactly!
As a 52 year old, 3-4 handicap I play 4 hybrids and I still hit it pretty far. In my late 20’s with the old drivers my swing speed was 120. Now when I have 165 yards or longer I get to hit an easy hybrid! Never going back!
Same here! Thank you for watching!
I would be interested in comparing the dispersion pattern for each club.
Sounds good!
I just grip down on my hy wood a bit to get this distance. It allows me to carry an extra wedge. But I do think the old 4i is becoming obsolete.
The Hywood is a GREAT club!
I use a Paradym 6 hybrid vs a 7 iron with great results. I also have a Callaway Paradym Heaven Wood in my bag and use this club from a variety of lies.
Thank you Dave!
I found putting in a 4-hybrid to be a no-brainer. The truth is that before I got one, I was adding loft to a 3-hybrid and going from that to a 5-iron. A 5-hybrid has pretty much pushed the 5-iron out, too, but my next iron set will probably still have a 5-iron. I will probably go for starting the set from a 25 degree loft 5-iron versus the 23.5 degree in my current set.
Thank you Jim!
Its very individualised, hybrids, long irons, driving style long irons or lofted fairways. It all comes down to your speed and club head delivery.
Thank you for watching!
Great video MSH! How is the comparison in terms of consistency and yards offline? I definitely hit hybrids higher and farther but often a bad shot goes left with a lot of hook spin which can result in extreme disaster depending on what is lurking in that direction.
I am going to do that video today! I had a couple other people interested in it also.
MSH - what is your video set up to record your videos? Love the content especially the matches with Tom!
Canon M50 and an inexpensive tripod. Thank you!
I started using a 7 wood for par 3s that are 170-190 yards. I hit it 20-30 yards longer than my 7 iron, and don't have to kill it. Years ago I carried my 4 iron 190 yards but its much harder to hit than a 7 wood.
I totally agree with you!
Solid testing. Losing a few pounds or is it just the Gary Player look? Merry Christmas
Let's hope!
Great video but I need my 4 iron to keep it low out of the trees😉😉
I had to learn to hit it low with a 7 iron. I may do a video on that! Thank you for watching!
Compare the TSR 2 .3 WOOD TO the Ping G430 3 wood.. with SR Shafts.
I don't think I'll be able to get my hands on those. Those aren't cheap and Ping won't send me any.
Dispersion numbers would be interesting. Flat face irons vs at least some bulge and roll on most hybrids. I think that’s why the Hywood is so accurate. What do you think?
I did a follow-up up video on dispersion of the two. I think you'd find it interesting.
I need to get me another 4 iron ,have always had trouble hitting the 4 hybrid.
Thank you!
Wish I could hold a green with a 4 iron!
Great video and comparison based on your swing speed and most of us hacker swing speeds. I agree, no need for the indoor/simulator ball striking. That is most RUclips Golf videos. No value to me. More value outside with comments. Don't be a follower! Your videos are better!!! Thanks!
Not a follower. I did videos that way a year ago. When it's 25 degrees outside I have no choice.
I currently use a Calloway X-hot 7wd as my 4i, and I love it. It’s basically my 170-180 club. If you don’t mind, which voice monitor do you use?
Outside I use the Voice Caddie SC300. I should have a link to it in the description. Thank you for watching!
@@mistahshorthitter thank you sir
How does you 4 hybrid compare with your 7 wood? Could the 7 wood replace both 3h and 4h?
I recently did a video on 7 Wood vs 3 Hybrid. That is possible but it depends on how big a gap you want into your next club. I hit the 7 Wood a little longer than I hit the 3 Hybrid. Thank you Bob!
Compare rounds with your driver to the new mini driver?
I dropped five strokes with my 3 wood,
I wonder what would happen with the mini driver?
@@billbyrnes9505 Very nice!
It really comes down to club gapping my friend. There should be 8-10 yards between clubs.
Thank you for watching
Those 4 irons seem really solid. Put that in the bag.
I have no chance of holding a green with that descent angle! That would be a horrible decision! Couldn't hit it out of the rough either.
@@mistahshorthitter Accuracy is more important.
Here's a video of the accuracy of each ruclips.net/video/TtUoGfhmxok/видео.html@@beng4647
From a Fitter's perspective, It looks like the bigger issue with your 4 iron is the difference in yardages that you get, it looked like your 4 hybrid was more predictable or at least within the margin of error for consistency
The difference in distance is due to the 4 iron being less forgiving in my opinion. I like most golfers don't hit the ball on the sweet spot all the time. Most people including myself believe hybrids are more forgiving.
All this doesn’t mean anything for a golfer unless you know the 5 iron distance and the distance to next club longer than 4 iron. Everyone has a place in their iron set where the next club goes barely farther than the previous and that’s where some help comes in. Usually 5 or 5 iron, but the real question is what is desired yardage.
Everyone? Where does your next club barely go further than the previous in your iron set? I'm really not sure if you are saying this video is useless or not. You can't cover everything in a 8 minute video so there are always going to be other things to consider. Thank you for watching!
It’s a great video but saying not enough information. It proves the 4 hybrid is 10 yards farther than 4 iron. If you are barely longer in your 4 iron vs your 5 iron it’s a better option. If your 4 iron is 12 yards farther than your 5 iron it’s a terrible replacement.
I understand what you are saying. I think you are looking for more out of the video than I intended to provide. I was simply comparing the playability of two clubs and I think most viewers understood that. I have and will get into gapping again. Hopefully, you find some value in future videos. Personally, I haven't had a 4 or 5 iron in the bag in probably 10 years. Thank you again.
I like the video I was just pointing that out. No need to defend it. Great video.
When you list the hy-woods is this the 4 hybrid your hitting in the video
No, the Hywood is a different club. I hit it a little longer than a 4 hybrid. I'll do another video on it soon. Thank you!
So what hybrid are you hitting?
@@arkbama6 Srixon ZX
22 degree? You love those Srixons! 😊. I tend to drift back to Callaway. Seem to hit them better…I have no idea why.
I've played Srixon 15 years
maybe a few shots from the rough next time?
No need for that. Impossible for me to hit a 4 Iron or 5 Iron from the rough. I said it at the beginning.
My swing speed is not enough for a 4 iron and I don't hit my Nickent 4 hybrid consistantly. Real dilemma.
Thank you for watching!
What was dispersion difference? It appeared your iron was more consistent. You can always play rollout, but you can't play anything that isn't consistent..
My dispersion is much better with the hybrid. I can't play rollout carrying bunkers and water. Also, I have 0 chance of hitting a 4 iron out of the rough. Whatever works best for you! Thank you for watching!
I definitely hit a 4 iron much better then a hybrid. I've never hit hybrids well.
Thank you for watching!
I've tried and I've tried and I can't hit them, they are to closed for me.I'm 60 and still hit a 2 iron. I want so bad to be able to hit hybrids. Those are the irons I game. PS, does that ball travel further with the 4 iron, bigger run?
Yes, it will definitely roll more. If you aren't trying to hold the ball on the green 4 iron can work unless you have to carry a bunker or water. Thank you so much Alan!
Try the Callaway Apex Utility wood. Same principles as a hybrid but does not sit as closed. Helps promote more of a straight to fade shot.
I wish Callaway would send me one!
@@S.forbesAwesome going to look into it.
6 hybrid vs 5 iron please.
Will do!
9 wood vs 5 iron
Wish I had one!
The indoor range is a good use along with the outdoor range,
More statistics, keep up the great videos!
@@billprokopowich6833 Thank you so much!
Show me 5 iron verses 5 hybrid
You got it!
Your 4 Iron shots were right at the flag. The 4 Hybrid shots were all over the place. This is the problem with hybrids. The scatter of poor result shots is huge.
Working on a dispersion video now that should answer those questions. I had a few people request it.
4 hybrid over 4 iron all day long. Misses way worse with 4 iron.
Definitely! Thank you for watching!
I can't hit my irons so I need help..thats why you use woods!!! Weak.. practice hitting your irons more...really...a 9 wood?¿? Wow
I was surprised when Dustin Johnson put a 9 Wood in his bag. The design of some clubs make the ball launch higher than others. If it was meaningless we'd all be playing Mashies from the 1920's. Thank you for watching!
