    I had a mechanical arortic valve replacement at the end of May this year (2024), and I don't remember a lot about the wake-up process. I vaguely remember the breathing tube being removed but can't remember feeling anything. The next thing I can remember was having a drink and a sandwich about 2 hours later. This was about 4 pm. I went to 'step down' around lunchtime the following day.

      That's great. Everyone's experience varies, I'm glad yours sounds pretty smooth. I hope you are doing well.

    I had my heart surgery done in March and I was super confused when I woke up. First thing I can remember is a loud clicking sound in my head and a super sore throat. My surgery didn’t go according to plan, original plan was to fix my mitral valve and my aorta. But my aorta kept tearing so they had to put in an artificial valve and root. Then I had internal bleeding and had to go back into surgery. I wasn’t aware of any of this and was confused when I was waking up and it was Wednesday morning not Tuesday evening. So I was sedated for almost 24hrs, like I said really confused and my throat was killing me. I kept telling the nurse I felt like I was choking and they said it was because I had the breathing tube in for so long. Finally I convinced them to look in my throat and to their surprise my “uvula” was swollen up and choking me. They quickly sprayed it with something and it felt better pretty quickly. So after that little hiccup things went pretty well not perfect but I had a pretty rough surgery nearly 12 hours in the operating room. The staff at the hospital were amazing and pretty much babied me. I feel like I bounced back fairly quickly, I went home on day 6 instead of day 8 like they had thought. So this is just a small snippet of my experience. Now I’m back to work and working on building back my strength. Thanks for sharing your story. Good luck and good health!

    I had my Aortic valve replaced and a triple bypass in July last year 2023, aged 53, I remember being up and about straight after the op, trailing my heart bleed tubes around. A massive thank you to all at Warrington cardiac care unit and those at Liverpool heart and chest unit.

      Had my open heart surgery on 12/18/23 & returned home 12/23/23. Today is 12/28/23 & I can't believe it's over. I kept thinking, "How am I going to get through all of this?". The hospital was rough bc I had 3 chest tubes in the sternum area & a tube out of my neck. My BP was staying too low, so they put a temporary pacemaker on me, and that was more wires to deal with. So, if you moved, you felt the incision pain plus the wires & 3 chest tubes. The second worst thing was the constant in & out of nurses, passed, nursing assistants, doctors, etc...some taking BP, others giving meds, another xray, blood work, etc. It was so good to go home & sleep 10 hours straight with no one bothering me.

      Hope you are both doing great. I go in early Monday morning to have my bicuspid aortic valve replaced. I had symptoms pop up in big way Dec '23. I was fully diagnosed by the end of Jan. I've been having symptoms for years but always attributed them to other things. Funny how obvious it is now but that's neither here nor there. Good luck in your recovery and I'll be joining you guys real soon. I look forward to being more able bodied as I've grown very accustomed to things being very difficult physically. I'm only 46, and I'll really being going strong when I'm all healed up. Take care of yourselves fellas!

    I had open heart surgery 1 year ago and I still remember the breathing tube and how I felt like I was choking . I had mine in until the next morning. Other than that I never had any pain only took pain medicine a couple days.

      The breathing tube was pretty bad in the moment for sure. Thanks for watching, I hope you are back to 100% in your recovery.

    I appreciate the info Jeff. I'm 55 y/o and have to decide between a TAVR or Artificial Valve and decide this Thursday. Thinking TAVR as my best option but we'll see what they say on Thursday!

    I had the TAVAR procedure . No opening up my chest. They just went up my groin to my heart and deployed the new Aortic vale. No pain what so ever and wasn't even knocked out for the procedure (That's what I wanted) . I was out of hospital the next day.. A easy procedure for me to endure, and when the valve wears out I can have the same procedure (Valve in a valve it's called)...

      Yes lots of different factors. Age, anatomy need for other surgery (eg mitral as well). Size of annulus and lifelong treatment etc gets complicated

      @@PhillipFreeman1 Yep your right.. It's normally done on old people (I was younger 67) who either too frail for open heart surgery (Because of their age) or the don't have the right anatomy, or artery disease.. I had tests to see if I was a candidate which I was.. Oh and if your valve is too small then it can't be done (smallest valve 23mm ) my is 29mm..

      OH it's been 1 year after my TAVAR procedure and I'm doing fine (I never did have any symptoms from my bicuspid valve even thought my Aortic valve was in bad shape)... I never knew that I had a bicuspid valve till a heart murmur turned up 15 years ago...

    On 1 June 1994 I had the same surgery, but laid in ICU for several days. I see you half sitting up in a chair with your head on a ??? Did it feel like a MACK truck hit you?

      @bicuspidaorticvalvereplacement  10 месяцев назад +2

      Absolutely. They got me out of bed 24 hours after surgery. It wasn't a fun process to get up, but moving helped overall. The chair was a relief in the ICU over the bed.
