I’m 74 and have both mitral valve prolapse and aortic stenosis. I think I’m going to do both at the same time if it is allowed. I also have cancer from the Vietnam war and agent orange. Lock and load.
@@GourmetDessertsByDria1 I had it in October of 2023 I think the surgery went well-thank you for asking. However, I also got my xiphoid process removed-don’t know if I spelled correctly but the round think under where they cut for open heart aortic valve replacement. Anyway an abcess developed in there so had to go back in get that removed and cleaned up stayed a while longer in hospital. They caught it before it burst and was just about an inch from the open heart scar so I was so lucky but that put me back a bit on healing. Truthfully I haven’t felt quite right since no energy and numbing in my arms and face. Spasms in my left arm sometimes but I can breathe now so thank God for that. While in there they found a hole in my heart so had to patch it up and I did get the mechanical valve-I was 50 so they said this would be my best option. It ticks loud like a clock but I’m getting used to it. The problem I have is now I have to take blood thinners for the rest of my life and had to go get INR levels checked two times a week in Nashville for months. Now I’m down to twice a month nearer to where I live. No energy but my heart doc says it’s normal cause of all they had to do. I had bicuspid aortic -and murmur my whole life but had never been told about that till the last few years. I was told I had a mitral valve prolapse but that wasn’t their main concern it was the severe aortic stenosis and regurgitation. I can honestly say that the symptoms got bad in July of 2023 with the respitory failure and having to wait because I had just had another surgery where I was slit down the middle lost my spleen and half my colon so we had to wait 3 months before they could cut me again. Sorry I wrote a book but I don’t know anyone else who has had this issue but when you begin to have the symptoms get to you heart doc they said they didn’t know how I was alive after they got in there. But goes to show you that being hard headed-which I am-helped me with this buy some aren’t as fortunate and have more problems than I do I shouldn’t complain.

I was also told I would go home on tylenol and that was not the case for me. I was in a lot of pain for a big over a month. It's been about two months and I'm still in pain, but it's not severe anymore.
No problem! If you have any other questions, there are over 4,000 pages of educational articles and videos about heart valve disease at HeartValveSurgery.com. Here's the link if you want to check it out - www.heart-valve-surgery.com/.

Very interesting subject. I had aortic valve replaced when I was 43 and this will have to be replaced soon, since it's a tissue valve. I am 56 now so it lasted longer than expected. So I am looking forward for a new one since I am having more and more problems lately, mainly nausea.
Great to hear you enjoyed the video with Dr. Chikwe. Are you considering a surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) or transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)? If you are interested, here is a video about SAVR versus TAVR that you might want to watch - ruclips.net/video/2frzVfxhC_A/видео.html.
you think you made the right choice? I'm the same age you were when you got your first. Mechanical sounds good but I don't want blood thinners for life, doing this surgery twice doesn't sound good either.
I am in Ireland would appreciate a car reply. I have aortic stenosis moderate and a 4.5 aneurysm. They say they will do both at the one 😅 Is this a dangerous operation? I am very worried. I am also blind and have sleep apnoea but not overweight and reasonably fit would love a reply thanks
Hi Mark, Great questions. As you are probably aware, most medical procedures have risk associated with them. That said, here is some data about the risks of cardiac surgery - www.heart-valve-surgery.com/valve-mortality-surgery-repair-replacement.php. Specific to your question about simultaneous treatments of aortic valve disease and aneurysms, that is regularly performed during one operation at experienced cardiac centers. Here is a list of articles that address the treatment of aortic stenosis and aneurysms - www.heart-valve-surgery.com/search.php?q=stenosis+aneurysm. We hope this helps you!
My mother has severe MS and severe and already mitral valve commissioratomy is done in 2005..Her age is 70.can she undergo a mitral valve replacement surgery?
Hi Abdulbasit, You raise a really great question about your mom. Unfortunately, as a patient advisory group, we are not trained or capable of providing specific medical advice. That said, we would strongly encourage you to discuss this question with your medical team. If you are not getting information that you are comfortable with then perhaps you should get a second opinion to validate and support next steps in your mom's mitral stenosis treatment process. We are sorry that we cannot be of more immediate help to you. So you know, we are aware of patients in their 70s getting a surgical or transcatheter reoperation. You can learn all about heart valve reoperations in this video - ruclips.net/video/rAqV5HFVvVQ/видео.html. Hope that helps!
I had underwent three open heart surgeries of a heart valve replacement in 2010 at age 36, 2019 a cow valve, and my 3rd was 2021 a mechanical aortic valve performed at Cedars-Sinai Hospital, LA but sadly, next day, went into a cardiac arrest but eventually recovered. The chest pains was painful of my first time in 2010 compared to the others. I just was dicharged two weeks ago at Cedars-Sinai Hospital and had underwent a pacemaker implanted. I can say, Cedars-Sinai Hospital, LA is a trustworthy hospital on all cardiac issue, surgeries and care, they are excellent compared to my prior hospital care ❤
I am 26 year old right now but I share a story about me, at five year old the doctor did a open heart surgery because I have a big whole in my heart , afterwards I had to learn everything again.
Hi Michael, Thanks for sharing your story about your cardiac surgery when you were just five years old. How is your heart doing now after the hole in your heart was fixed?
Hi Tom, That's a really great question. The durability of a tissue valve is dependent upon many things including wear-and-tear of the valve leaflets, potential calcium build-up on the bioprosthetic valve, the age of the patient, and other risk factors. We have to remember that the tissue valves are made from materials from a cow and/or pig that are not of human origin. To get you an even better answer to your question, we will ask a heart valve expert the next time we attend a medical conference. Sound good?

Hi, thanks for your service! Yes, both valves can be treated in one operation. Please find an expert in multiple valve surgery.
How did your surgery go?
Very informative I’m going in soon for aortic valve replacement. Trying to learn more of the two different types tissue or mechanical.
Great to hear you enjoyed this video with Dr. Chikwe!

This was a through the rib operation
Yes, minimally-invasive port-access goes through the ribs.

@HeartValveSurgery so fair good but I will let a doctor check it out
Why do the tissue valves fail sooner? They do seem to be a better choice.

I'm sure I have fluid overload. I'm taking edema pills
How are the edema pills working for you after your surgery?
Only so so
