I’m 74 and have both mitral valve prolapse and aortic stenosis. I think I’m going to do both at the same time if it is allowed. I also have cancer from the Vietnam war and agent orange. Lock and load.

Very interesting subject. I had aortic valve replaced when I was 43 and this will have to be replaced soon, since it's a tissue valve. I am 56 now so it lasted longer than expected. So I am looking forward for a new one since I am having more and more problems lately, mainly nausea.
Great to hear you enjoyed the video with Dr. Chikwe. Are you considering a surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) or transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)? If you are interested, here is a video about SAVR versus TAVR that you might want to watch - ruclips.net/video/2frzVfxhC_A/видео.html.
you think you made the right choice? I'm the same age you were when you got your first. Mechanical sounds good but I don't want blood thinners for life, doing this surgery twice doesn't sound good either.
I was also told I would go home on tylenol and that was not the case for me. I was in a lot of pain for a big over a month. It's been about two months and I'm still in pain, but it's not severe anymore.
I had underwent three open heart surgeries of a heart valve replacement in 2010 at age 36, 2019 a cow valve, and my 3rd was 2021 a mechanical aortic valve performed at Cedars-Sinai Hospital, LA but sadly, next day, went into a cardiac arrest but eventually recovered. The chest pains was painful of my first time in 2010 compared to the others. I just was dicharged two weeks ago at Cedars-Sinai Hospital and had underwent a pacemaker implanted. I can say, Cedars-Sinai Hospital, LA is a trustworthy hospital on all cardiac issue, surgeries and care, they are excellent compared to my prior hospital care ❤
I am in Ireland would appreciate a car reply. I have aortic stenosis moderate and a 4.5 aneurysm. They say they will do both at the one 😅 Is this a dangerous operation? I am very worried. I am also blind and have sleep apnoea but not overweight and reasonably fit would love a reply thanks
Hi Mark, Great questions. As you are probably aware, most medical procedures have risk associated with them. That said, here is some data about the risks of cardiac surgery - www.heart-valve-surgery.com/valve-mortality-surgery-repair-replacement.php. Specific to your question about simultaneous treatments of aortic valve disease and aneurysms, that is regularly performed during one operation at experienced cardiac centers. Here is a list of articles that address the treatment of aortic stenosis and aneurysms - www.heart-valve-surgery.com/search.php?q=stenosis+aneurysm. We hope this helps you!
Hi Tom, That's a really great question. The durability of a tissue valve is dependent upon many things including wear-and-tear of the valve leaflets, potential calcium build-up on the bioprosthetic valve, the age of the patient, and other risk factors. We have to remember that the tissue valves are made from materials from a cow and/or pig that are not of human origin. To get you an even better answer to your question, we will ask a heart valve expert the next time we attend a medical conference. Sound good?
Hi NevilVadher, You raise a really great question. Unfortunately, as a patient advisory group, we are not trained or capable of providing specific medical advice. That said, we would strongly encourage you to discuss this question with your medical team. If you are not getting information that you are comfortable with then perhaps you should get a second opinion to validate and support next steps in the treatment process. We are sorry that we cannot be of more immediate help to you!

Hi, thanks for your service! Yes, both valves can be treated in one operation. Please find an expert in multiple valve surgery.
Thank you !

Great to hear the pain is subsiding. We wish you had less pain earlier though!

This was a through the rib operation
Yes, minimally-invasive port-access goes through the ribs.

Why do the tissue valves fail sooner? They do seem to be a better choice.

I'm sure I have fluid overload. I'm taking edema pills
How are the edema pills working for you after your surgery?
