I’m 6’6 195 with around a 39-41 inch vert and it all boils down to 3 things, The amount of times you simply spend jumping, how strong you are (for your body weight), your raw genetics
4th thing the amount of time you are willing to sacrifice to dedicating yourself to learning your body and the overall process, including the knowledge you are willing to gain for specialized training or getting a trainer w/said knowledge already and willing to learn more, (perfect example is Isaiah Rivera and his trainer)
@@Frxnando That‘s not an excuse for being this unbelievably unathletic bro…. please do some plyometrics, because I‘m 6 foot tall, 16 years old, 155 lbs and i can throw down dunks off two aswell as off one and throw down lobs and everything (I even posterized a couple of guys). And it‘s not THAT much of a genetic thing because I‘m turkish, persian and I might have a little black in me, but you get the memo. Especially at your height you only need like a 20 inch vert(maybe even less) to just dunk a basketball comfortably, while I‘m here with a 35, maybe 36 inch vert. On the point about relative strength; I believe you are conflating relative strength with relative muscle mass, when you say in order to increase relative strength, you either need to bulk or cut. Relative strength is influenced by a number of factors outside of sheer muscle mass, and you can increase relative strength as an experienced athlete without any change in bodyweight, or even any change in body composition.
I agree with your underlying points. You don't absolutely need to bulk per say, but it does make things significantly easier for getting stronger. If you're fat, you absolutely need to cut though (in the context of VJ). Might I add, my bulk range was from 200-500 calories a day which is relatively small (would be considered a lean bulk). The truth is the average person doesn't have the ideal body composition. I also wouldn't assume the average viewer is an experienced athlete. I agree with your general points though. Appreciate your take.
"Relative strength is influenced by a number of factors outside of sheer muscle mass" To expand, those factors are: muscle fiber composition (fast twitch vs slow twitch fibers), CNS (central nervous system) synaptic fire rate and nerve coordination. Everyone starts out with varying amounts of development of these factors, but the way you train can further enhance them to develop explosive strength. To do so you need to prioritize maximum muscle recruitment during training, BUT high recovery phases and rest periods AND frequency of training. That means your training sessions should be intense and frequent but short. That's because the muscle fibers and synaptic fire rates required for explosive strength are recruited at a relatively high recovered state. If your sessions are too long, the body pivots to using more slow twitch fibers and slower synaptic fire rates due to fatigue. First start with body weight movements that are very explosive (box jumps, jump squats etc), when you do lift, high but manageable loads with low reps (think 5 x 3 or 4x4) and lots of rest in between sets. Your training sessions should be less than 45 min and you should feel like you could do it again the next day. Optimal frequency would be every other day for novices and daily but shorter sessions for intermediate to advanced athletes. Genetics is also a factor, but since you can't control that I don't touch on it.

I’m 180 at 5’11 right now and I can tap the rim. My goal weight is 165, how much will my vertical be affected by losing that much weight? Anyone have any similar experience ?
I’m about the same height and weight. I just started dunking at 34 yrs old because I realized that it’s not about weight as much as body fat percentage and strength in the right muscles. To jump higher, focus on Hip Thrust, Squats, calf raises, Sit ups and Pull ups. You’ll gain more muscle and but should also be loosing fat by doing cardio like playing basketball at least every other day. Nate Robinson for example, was about 185 lbs at 5’8 Barefoot and was ridiculously explosive with about A 44 inch Vertical. Some of it is genetics and most of us aren’t equipped like Nate but we can for sure get our Vert to about 35 inches max and be able to dunk (if you have atleast A 5’10 wingspan)
@@rell4219 Thanks! I actually do all those exercises/lifts already and I am pretty explosive when driving but just not my vert. Also you can say relative to size or whatever but z and ant is real power ja is not strong at all. Ja is just a bigger a.i who is actually 5'10 or 5'11 also has a 41 inch vert didn't come from power comes from being light and athletic
@@PJFort-wi9et yea you can Google it and a I was a killer but he was physically strong he was mentally strong and Iverson was only 165 pounds very light so he's wrong on this one
Strength relative to bodyweight is the only kind of strength that matters in this context though. It’s like calling a elite rock climber like Alex Megos weak because he’s skinny and can’t lift as much as someone like world’s strongest man winner Brian Shaw. They may not be able to lift as much weight, but Alex can do one arm pull ups with ease while Brian would struggle to do even a single regular pull up! And it’s stupid to say that someone is athletic but not strong since strength is an incredibly important component of athleticism. To be athletic you have to generate a lot of force very quickly. But it doesn’t matter how quickly you can generate force if you’re not strong enough to generate much force in the first place! And A.I. was a star football player in high school. How many elite football players do you know who are weak?
I dont know where you got that Zion vertical is 43 but that man did a dunk from the free throw line no cheating easy, like Ant and Ja cant do that at all and their size difference wouldnt justify this
Based off what i'm reading, I wouldn't say cut or even intentionally bulk. I would focus on getting as strong as possible and that may result in you putting on a few pounds of muscle. Just focus on getting a lot stronger at your body weight, but a few pounds might be put on during the process. Don't forget to keep those max effort jump reps up. Best of luck my guy.
yo bro I’m like 5’7 170 ish pounds thing is I’m mostly muscle and low body fat % the thing is I’m pretty shifty and fast but my vertical ain’t that high I’ve been doing workouts but I’ve been thinking about cutting what you think

How do I find my ideal weight for basketball tho? I went from 75kg and 35inch vert to 80kg and 38inch vert at the same time. (6'0) But Im still skinny so how far can I take it before my vert suffers from it?
I like this question. The goal is always to get stronger and overload your body over time. If you can do that at the same weight, then you’re probably around your ideal weight. You have to continue to push your strength limits, that should be your focus. As long as you’re strong and lean you should be fine. Only you will know how far you can take it, through experience. Once you feel it’s suffering you can dial down your weight. Good luck 🤞🏾
I honestly haven't measured it before but I do definitely have long arms for my height. I'll probably do I video of me taking all my measurements in the future (Standing reach, wingspan, etc).
Ja is definitely not the strongest. He’s the lightest and doesn’t jump that much higher than the other two guys. Zion is definitely the strongest relative to his bodyweight because he’s got a propel 300 pounds over 40 inches in the air. Easy way to look at this is to throw 100 pounds on Ja. How high will he jump?😅
Yeah I hear the Zion case it’s definitely possible, maybe even likely. It’s possible I was just initially shocked my Ja’s strength. Also, when Zion was 300 pounds he definitely wasn’t jumping the same like we expected when he first came into the league.
@@JiggyHills for sure. Still crazy to propel your body 42+ inches at at least 260 pounds like we saw him jumping during that Duke combine. I’m really interested in this suck overall. @@jamiedevine Well I guess you're an athletic guy. It's very possible for you to dunk, you just need to practice and get used to it. I'm 5'9 and I've always been wanting to dunk but I could only reach a quarter of the net. 😭
Ay bro, I'm 5'10-5'11 with a 6'3 wingspan (I'm black) At 15 and I have a 26 Inch vertical. would cutting be the only thing I need to do or should I implement workouts like skipping rope?
I’m assuming you don’t go to a gym yet. I’d probably mostly focus on practicing your jumping form and getting in those reps. It’ll go along way. You can also implement some Plyometrics like sprinting, depth jumps, etc. Jumping rope is good but you will need more intense stuff like max effort jumps and plyos. Once you’re ready for the weight room, the next step would be to get super strong. If you’re a little heavy you can slim out but you’re still young as long as you’re a healthy weight don’t worry about cutting too much right now.

before i gained a bunch of weight i was super skinny so im just cutting and also my lower body is way bigger compared to my upper body.
I’m 6 foot and 230 lbs I’m pretty lean tho and can barley touch rim off of one foot but I don’t know how to dunk off of 2 feet
I’m 6foot 155lbs and I still need to do plyometrics and explosive weighted leg workouts to dunk. I still can’t dunk……YET
YET.
im 5'8 black kid 125 pounds dunking at 16
I am 5'11 and 12 yrs old, I can't dunk and I am getting close to grabbing rim at 137 lbs, anyone got some advice for me to be dunking by the end of eighth grade? (I'm at the end of 7th rn)
Just do calf raises everyday until ur close
wish i was 5 11
I’m 180 at 5’11 right now and I can tap the rim.
I guess I forgot to mention that even though that’s my height I have a pretty small frame and skeletal structure. I’m “small boned” despite being that height/weight LOL 😂 But thank you for the reply
Also you can say relative to size or whatever but z and ant is real power ja is not strong at all. Ja is just a bigger a.i who is actually 5'10 or 5'11 also has a 41 inch vert didn't come from power comes from being light and athletic
not true at all ja is definitely strong anybody who can jump high is strong in certain ways.
@@ayvol2036 Iverson has a 41 in vertical 😂🤦
@demigodt34 He does
@@PJFort-wi9et yea you can Google it and a I was a killer but he was physically strong he was mentally strong and Iverson was only 165 pounds very light so he's wrong on this one
Ja is 174lbs so curling 50lb dumbells isn't crazy.
Ts still a lot 174 ngl
@@braywitdalay not if you’ve been consistently working out you can bench 225 for reps at that weight like me im 6 foot 175
@@nbflilwon7081 you gotta put me on to some workouts I’m 6”2 160 I can barely curly 30
I’m 6ft 235-240 and my vert is mid 30s
what can i do at home with no equipment to jump higher
I dont know where you got that Zion vertical is 43 but that man did a dunk from the free throw line no cheating easy, like Ant and Ja cant do that at all and their size difference wouldnt justify this
Shaedon Sharpe is a one-foot jumper who jumps the highest in the league. He is not as skinny or lanky as Ja or even Edwards
You called out zion so many times yall got beef?
Yo what are some of your PRs in the weight room? Specifically barbell squat.
I'm a similar size to you and that's why i ask
@@MarionDoesIt24 Ha you're nowhere close to his size lol
Zion is 6’4😊
love the content bro but can you do vids on how to cut weight if your fat and also can you do videos of exercises for vertical. thanks bro
180 6'2 in shoes one foot jumper, think i should cut or put on a couple more pounds? I can dunk off all four plants, but one foot is my best.
@@JiggyHills bet brodie! preciate you
Good video
Thank you man
What if your a power one foot
yo bro I’m like 5’7 170 ish pounds thing is I’m mostly muscle and low body fat % the thing is I’m pretty shifty and fast but my vertical ain’t that high I’ve been doing workouts but I’ve been thinking about cutting what you think
Do some plyometrics. Work on your power and decreasing your contact time on the ground. 170 isn’t too big for your height
I'm at 6ft 280lbs with 32inch two step vert but I also got trex arms wingspan below my height gg, I got tons of fat to lose but I'm excited to see if I can hit 40inch after cutting
What is your wingspan
I am 6'2 but i have 6 ft wingspan
@@MJ23GOAT-qf4ik i feel you bro i just measured im 6ft with exact same 6ft wingspan but my shoulders are broad so my arm itself is even shorter, standing reach at 7ft 8 inches so touching rim needs 28inches to dunk prob 38inches
@@MJ23GOAT-qf4ik have you tried stretching? I increased my wingspan by 2" by stretching.
So u like the size to post up?
Bron actually has a skinny/lean frame
Lmao he's definitely not skinny. He is lean but 250 lbs and he looks huge
@@NoahBaehr if you look at Bron and how he looked in high school, you can tell he somewhat had a slim build. He just put on a bunch of muscle over the years that makes him look huge. Thats why it wasn’t hard for him to slim down how he did that one summer in Miami
6 and half feet I weigh 150
yo bro what should i do. i am 5'10 175lbs my vert is around 34inches bulk or cut?
Stay where you at and focus on strength training
Got my first dunk at 5’9 idk my vert
Ant ain't no 230. Dude is 215 at most.
Zion doesn’t have a 43 inch vert.
5’9 131 pounds at 14 i can also dunk should i bulk or no
Yes you should
How do I find my ideal weight for basketball tho? I went from 75kg and 35inch vert to 80kg and 38inch vert at the same time. (6'0) But Im still skinny so how far can I take it before my vert suffers from it?
I like this question. The goal is always to get stronger and overload your body over time. If you can do that at the same weight, then you’re probably around your ideal weight.
You have to continue to push your strength limits, that should be your focus. As long as you’re strong and lean you should be fine. Only you will know how far you can take it, through experience. Once you feel it’s suffering you can dial down your weight. Good luck 🤞🏾
@@JiggyHills thx
75 kg is not skinny
@@Unlimited-D-Works Im at 80kg and still skinny🤷♂️
@@simon_thebucket bro I’m 60 kg at around 6’0 or 6’2. Adding 15-20 kg on me would make me look like a normal man.
Ja is like 165lbs they said he put on 15lbs during his suspension but idk man lol
THIS
Hey bro whats your standing reach?
Would love to see strength numbers for these guys. Obviously a lot of them are untrained, but I bet you they could push a lot of weight squatting relative to their weight if they were trained.
@@lifestories4031he was 282 ish a duke. Crazy with a 40-45 incher pause
zion is 260
I’m 6’8 220 and can’t dunk, am I cooked?
You're one tall guy, you gotta dunk 😭
@@anzoanz1842 idk what’s wrong with me because I used to compete in track and field but have never dunked 😭
@@jamiedevine Well I guess you're an athletic guy. It's very possible for you to dunk, you just need to practice and get used to it.
I'm 5'9 and I've always been wanting to dunk but I could only reach a quarter of the net. 😭
5:23 Bro said, let’s be real he has an eating problem 😭💀. He not wrong tho, that Louisiana cuisine got him eating good
Ay bro, I'm 5'10-5'11 with a 6'3 wingspan (I'm black) At 15 and I have a 26 Inch vertical. would cutting be the only thing I need to do or should I implement workouts like skipping rope?
I’m assuming you don’t go to a gym yet. I’d probably mostly focus on practicing your jumping form and getting in those reps. It’ll go along way. You can also implement some Plyometrics like sprinting, depth jumps, etc.
Jumping rope is good but you will need more intense stuff like max effort jumps and plyos. Once you’re ready for the weight room, the next step would be to get super strong. If you’re a little heavy you can slim out but you’re still young as long as you’re a healthy weight don’t worry about cutting too much right now.
Ja morant is 175 lbs
@1:30 Ayo what ?
Anthony Edwards ain't 230 more like 215 210
