I don't remember a player besides David to this day capable of making Djokovic, Murray and Nadal look like amateurs.
Sure, he is well knowed for being the only one who defeated the Big3 in the same event. And he almost did it twice. If Djokovic had been in Paris, it would have happened. But what stands out is not the result itself, but the way it happened.
He couldn't do the same with Federer on fast courts, cuz it's impossible to make Federer look like an amateur, especially in those pre-mono years when the tennis maestro barely wavered or lost on that type of court.
Federer lost just 4 matches at fast coiurts all season.

@@superx1457 Dude, again, u miss the point.
We are not talking about win or lost, but about a player toying Rafa in a way that no one has ever done. Fact. Win or lose is another question. Anyone who plays this sport knows that tennis is about who makes fewer mistakes, not who make more winners or who plays beautifully... 99% of the time. Players like Federer and Nalbandian are the exception of the exception.
Anyway, one month after this match David went into surgery and never returned to the top10. So he was near a injury here, out of shape, bad ranked against the AO Champion and world no1. This is a performance just at pure talent.
In previous confrontations between them he won:
      - 61 62 at 2007's Madrid ATP1000 quarterfinals in 54 minutes.
      - 63 60 at 2007's Paris ATP1000 final in 32 minutes.
Post some other result where Nadal lost a decision of a major event so quickly being the first seed. Maybe Indian Wells and Miami 2017 to Federer would be something similar. But even that sunshine double were not so fast matches, Rafa fight a lot.

3:51we can have an idea why that's considered the best two-handed bh ever.
4:54 a total changing direction winner as if it were nothing...
I watched one of David’s matches in São Paulo (2013). Without know the score, just looking from the outside, felt like he is winning 6-0, 6-0. The sound of the ball striking and the effortless way he generated acceleration are surreal.
5:07 the speed of this ball, exemplifies wat im talking about. His bh is famous, most people dont realize his forehand is amazing too.
The shots Nalbandian did in the following highlights from the court-lvl camera give a dimension of this guy talent.
6:46 the result of massive forehand from Rafa against Davi's backhand
7:47 also a serie of volleys at this match, look this one, man. Insane.

Nadal played Nalbandian 7 times. Nalbandian won the first two times they played - but they were both on indoor hard courts in 2007 - and Nalbandian won all 4 sets. He also won the first set in their third match (the one in this video), but from there Rafa turned it around. Rafa won their last 5 matches and took 11 of their last 13 sets. Rafa won every match they played outdoors (5-0), 4 of those on hard courts. They only played one match on clay with Rafa winning 6-2, 6-3.
Between 2002 and 2006, Nalbandian made 10 slam quarter finals in a 5 year period. He made 5 slam SF and one slam final during that period.
He played Hewitt in the 2002 Wimbledon final and got smoked (1-6, 3-6, 2-6).
He lost a 5 set SF to Roddick at the 2003 US Open. He won the first 2 sets but then lost a 7-9 tie breaker in the third set. Then he got smoked in the last 2 sets (1-6, 3-6). Roddick went on to win the title.
He lost in the 2004 French Open SF to Gaston Gaudio (3-6, 6-7, 0-6). Gaudio went on to win the title.
He lost in the 2006 Australian Open SF to Baghdatis (6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 4-6), again winning the first 2 sets - and then losing the last 3. Federer beat Baghdatis in the final.
He lost to Federer in the 2006 French Open SF (6-3, 4-6, 2-5 ret.). Rafa beat Fed in the final.
He seemed to wilt in the biggest matches at the end of slams.
In his career, he made 24 finals and won 11 (11-13). His biggest title was the 2005 year end Masters Cup. He made the event as the 8th seed. He beat #6 Ljubcic, #4 Coria, #5 Davydenko in the SF... and #1 Federer in the final. Roger won the first two sets in tie breakers (7-4 and 13-11). But then David made a great comeback and won the next two sets (6-2, 6-1). The deciding 5th set went to another tie breaker with Nalbandian winning it 7-3. This outstanding win got David to a career best year end #6. From 2002-08, he had 7 consecutive years where he finished in the ATP top 12 (and 5 consecutive years where he finished between #6 and #9, 2003-07.
Nalbandian's greatest achievement might be... that he is the only player to ever beat "the big 3" all in the same tournament. In late October of 2007, at the Madrid indoor hard court tournament... Nalbandian beat Rafa (6-1, 6-2) in the quarter finals. This was their very first meeting. He played Novak in the SF and won (6-4, 7-6). This was the only time that he beat Novak in his career (being 1-4 against him). Then he played Roger in the final and beat him (1-6, 6-3, 6-3). He only beat Novak that one time - and he only beat Rafa twice. He was 8-11 vs. Roger, 2-5 vs. Rafa, 1-4 vs. Novak.
About a week later he won the next indoor hard court tournament (at Paris) beating Almagro in the 1st R, #14 Moya in the 2nd R, #1 Roger in the 3rd R, #5 Ferrer in the QF, #10 Gasquet in the SF and #2 Rafa in the final. So he beat Rafa in back to back tournaments in 2007 on indoor hard courts, the first 2 times they played - then never beat him again. He beat Roger in those same 2 tournaments back to back. Had to be the best two weeks of his life.
He played Roger in 3 finals and won 2 of them . Played Rafa in 2 finals and was 1-1. Never played Novak in a final.
In his junior career... he beat Federer (6-3, 7-5) for the 1998 US Open title. He lost the 1999 French Open title to Coria (4-6, 3-6)... and he won the 1999 Wimbledon doubles with Coria (7-5, 6-4).
His only wins vs. a #1 player were all against Roger (those 2 times in 2007 and once in 2005).

Nalbandian most talented player ever. Look this guy playing. I dont car the numbers, GS's, and stuff... Cilic and Medvedev had more titles. Go pay to accompany them, I'll pay to see David. Yes, he lost, because, in detail, he didn't convert his match points. Merit of Nadal, this time, he surpassed himself, as he has done countless times in his career. Nalbandian obviously broke after this. But the level he had been presenting up to that point was impressive. And he wasn't at his peak here, a little overweight, bad ranked... while Nadal was the AO Champion and no1 of the world. Still, it seemed the opposite until the end of the second set. Nalbadian was literally toying Nadal. Who else do you see being able to do this? When he is motivated - and playing against Nadal naturally gives him the motivation he needs - he presents a game that no one else does. Perfect shots, in every way, angles, both sides. Some of these winners are insanely difficult, and he shoots naturally. Pure talent. My favorite player, the one i used to follow, winning or losing doesn't matter. It was a pleasure to watch him.

    • @fejuncor
      @fejuncor День назад

@@nathanherzka9355 I'm being nice to some players here. If you filter only matches against prime Federer, so Roddick would have only one win, not three. The other two victories came after mononucleosis drastically affected Federer during the offseason, from the end of 2007 to the beginning of 2008.
The same applies to Blake, Hewitt, Davydenko, and others.
Perhaps the most telling defeat was the one against Blake at the Beijing Olympics. The air pollution at that time was notoriously severe (China has improved in recent years, but in 2008, it was still a critical issue - people often wore masks on the streets) and Federer struggled to reach Blake's shots while maintaining any sort of balance in defense. Some questioned his uncharacteristic lack of resistance in that match. Others were more observant and noted how he left the court drenched in sweat, wondering if he was feeling unwell. Federer, in his characteristic class, dismissed any speculation and only praised Blake’s performance.
As always, Federer has refused to discuss the impact of mononucleosis. For him, bringing it up would feel like disrespecting his opponents (something he would never do) however, we can clearly see the difference between Federer before and after 2008. As a tennis player myself, I can attest that his footwork was never quite the same after that. Of course, Federer would never publicly admit anything that might sound like an excuse or diminish his rivals’ achievements.
Watch Federer against Nadal at 2006's Rome, Monte Carlo, French Open or 2007's FO. He could sustain an endurance match for 5 hours against a young Nadal withoiut any injury yet, always making Rafa have to save mp's and give everthing to survive and win AT A CLAY COURT... then see Federer playing at clay after mono. Looks like are not the same player. After 2008, Federer didn't even threaten a single set from Nadal anymore. The same Federer who a year ago always pushed Nadal to the limit on clay, suddenly, in the following year, absolutely lost the ability to compete on clay even to achichieve a set.
Davydenko’s two victories came in 2009 and 2010.
Roddick’s two additional wins happened in 2008 and 2012.
People will believe whatever they want, but if you’re looking for something close to proof, just examine his win/loss record against top-10 opponents.
Federer from 2003 to 2007: 85-100% win rate each year.
      2008: 39%.
It’s not absolute proof, but it is a clear indication that something was wrong.
For me, such a drastic drop in performance cannot happen without an external cause. If Federer’s decline were natural, it would have occurred gradually. Try finding something remotely similar in the careers of Jordan, Messi, or any athlete of this level. U just cant.

In this match, up to a certain point, Rafa was too afraid of Nalbandian's backhand as he admitted, and played too often to his forehand. Then Rafa remembered that he has a pretty strong left wing too. That he(Rafa) also had a good forehand. That was when he started to play better and better.
In their later matchups, Rafa also realized that if he can get Nalbandian into a long match, he'd win.

But the Murray loss at Dubai was when Murray was ranked 11th & he actually beat Murray at 4th in SS at the USO Final (as well as Novak in the SF).
