      Pretty sure the US government already has a patent on the thc molecule. Did that years ago because they knew what was coming. But yet it's still classified as plant with no medicinal value...I may be mistaken..but I believe I read that a few years ago. So they technically didn't patent a plant..just the main molecule from the plant. ✌️

    Patens for weed strains is a bad ideal. The people pushing them are picking the starting line beginning with their strains, and not the ones they used of other peoples work to breed those plants.
    All plants should not be patented. Most of those traits and phenos already exist in the seed. Giving them a patent just because they tweezed it out first would be wrong

      I recommend braking up your stuff by hand. I always find seeds in the stash, not consistently but one seed per ounce for example. I notice that a lot of new smokers grind their herb and also the seeds in the process. That being said. Grow your own once you find a seed from a batch that suits you. True that you will be limited to what you grow but trust that it gets easier to grow as you build experience. Then you may even be able to breed at a friends house or something of the like to not pollinate all the precious females.

      Not quite so. I grow my own stuff and breed at a buddys for seeds. Therefore i just created my own cultivar and strain. Someone would have to take all my plants and seeds to truly make it their own and theres no interest in that because im not selling. I give all my weed away or smoke it.

    • @mexicanabist8705
      @mexicanabist8705 4 года назад

      @@rollyrolas I respectfully disagree. It's not your strains or genetics they're after. They could care less. But the second you develop something that impacts the market like say gg4 or blue dream, theyll come knocking. You may have a handsome pay day on your hands if you had it patented. If not someone else could easily claim it if they got hold of those specific genetics. The problem is eventually all the small tier farmers and breeders will be bought out of their genetics as the machine consolidates the entire market into a couple of hands.

    • @mexicanabist8705
      @mexicanabist8705 4 года назад +2

      The other side is that broad utility patents may inadvertently cover the genetics you are working with because theyve been working with them too. This will totally negate any chance of you ever producing plants for the general public to purchase... They're culling the competition by making us believe patenting our own stuff will save us, when really it opens us up to being bought out. There is no rightful owner of any genetics. Plants are plants and they should belong to whoever chooses to utilize them however they wish. If they patent a strain and find you have it in production then you'll being staring down the barrel of a lawsuit. Much like corn farmers whose crop was pollinated by monsantos crop next door. The next year their corn tests positive for Monsanto genetics and its game over.

    Aha at 24:00 it’s funny the way he is trying to make it sound like he agrees with all the (in my view very wise and right) talk about making genetics open-source, but then puts a caveat on it where he’s like “We’ve got to share... But also I don’t want to share the actually good strains I have.” When he says “If I’m the only one who has it then I can charge whatever I want, but if someone else has it and you try to see a bad version people will turn it down,” that sounds an awful lot like nakedly saying “I don’t want to be expected to grow at a high standard, because it’s easier if people will give a high price no matter how bad it is...” If all producers had that attitude, then people would be paying much higher prices for much lower quality prices. Having to compete with the growers who do put their heart into producing a great product, and then sell it at a fair price (even if that’s high relative to more middle of the road flowers) is what forces the corporations who presently monopolize so much of the legal growing market to compromise and not just take advantage of consumers as they would in a total seller’s market.
    I understand the instinct to not want to have to share a valuable asset like genetics that you know will work, but I think that allowing cannabis genetics to be patented would be a catastrophe for the overall industry, just like it has been around Monsanto with other crops, and it would be a catastrophe for consumers. I have a lot of problems with the corporatization of cannabis in general (and I fear the same will become of any psychedelics which become legalized on a scale that opens up significant markets), and the way small producers get pushed to the margins by big corporations if they can stay in business at all... But I think that protecting cannabis genetics as an open-source library would go a long way towards preventing that process by preventing the genetics themselves from becoming totally commodified the way the physical product is... I think it would also accelerate the progress in cannabis breeding immensely- if anyone with an interest in and knowledge of breeding had access to whatever genetics they thought would produce the results they were hunting for, whether that’s ancient landraces or contemporary hybrids... Of course, as the landscape of the industry changes, we’ll have to figure out the ideal situation which allows for breeders and growers (including small ones) to make a living while also serving the common good and the interests of consumers... But I think this is an area which is a necessary starting point, not something we should compromise on.

    I lobe the way that guy in the black hat thinks about what makes him happy about his farming process. I would love to do time on his farm and learn some of what he knows so I could use that knowledge in my own small medical grow and share that knowledge with others like me. We are limited to 5 plants over 5 inches. That limit makes a learning mistake into an unmedicated patient and that doesn't help. I feel like we need an education program and grow gear specifically aimed at medical home growers and a seed/clone program sponsored by and controlled by the state for medical patients only. They are allowing for craft grow licensing as an income stream but as patients we are limited to grow less canopy than we are allowed to purchase in dry form so it forces us into unequal economy against growing your own. I mean I put in 2 seeds and got wow mothers but can I clone n flower everything below 5 inches so I have failure space? No I cant and 3 big plants are more apt to get sick or weak and cost my crop. We need method applied to figure out the how to of good farming under the 5 plant limit.

      You have to have a “do it yourself” attitude to move foreword in your cannabis pathway . We all learned mostly from forums and reading and practice. You have to be willing to take the risk of failing and losing a plant or two. If that’s the worst that happens, then why bitch? How about learning and risking losing a crop due to beginner mistakes, all the while risking decades in prison for said small grow? We risked getting busted and taught ourselves. You don’t need government funded education plans to teach you to grow. Get out there and try.... make some mistakes . It’s good for you.
