    Mark your story about your 1st submariner hit home - I had the same experience! First got a Rolex in my mid 40s (steel sub no date) after thinking they were cool for years, and blessed to be in a position to buy one. But once I did… it made me self conscious when someone noticed, as I’m not one to call attention to anything projecting wealth, just a genuine watch geek. I’m still not over this hump - I stick to the non-flashy sports side of Rolex (still my favorite brand), but sometimes it IS wearing me 😅

      I can relate to that, and myself had always struggled with the paradox of wanting to fly under the radar, but wear these adorable watches. I learned to just roll with it, and the more you do, the less the watch is wearing you.

    Interesting topic. If I am wearing a 20k watch. I do not want to hit it on a door, or scratch it. But if I am wearing a Casio world time. I don’t want to hit it on the door or scratch it. Basically I look after any Watch’s I own. it does not matter the value of the Watch. I just look after my watches.

    Hype watches wear owners when owners acquired them because they are "hype". The mindset of "hype" is predicated on standing out, while fitting in, and is built upon a foundation of validation seeking and group think. In a reality where there is no "hype" (zero external appreciation/validation) attached to the watch, then it is worn on the basis of subjective personal appreciation void of external input. We can apply this to most goods purchased. I believe we are all susceptible to this to some extent. Great points Mark.

    • @TheSlowoldman
      @TheSlowoldman 2 месяца назад

      How do you determine that? For instance the new GMT is the latest hype watch..... I like it. I was a fan of the black but I like the black/gray bezel even more because it denotes day/night everso subtly when the all black doesn't. I've waited a long time to buy a GMT and this is the one I want for personal reasons, not the "hype" although it qualifies as a hype watch. I understand your point, I just don't know if you can make it a blanket statement.

    • @TheRandomWatchDude
      @TheRandomWatchDude  2 месяца назад +1

      @@TheSlowoldman personally I think the latest grey / black GMT is the most understated of them all, and therefore doesn't quite hit the hype levels of say the Pepsi or Batman. It's a good solid choice for a discerning Rolex enthusiast

    Yes! Buy that new gold Deep Sea!
    Wear it with utter nonchalance -scratches be damned!
    You might still catch yourself admiring it from time to time though. Maybe even positioning it just so to catch the light?
    I’d argue you can still glance admiringly at your watch without it wearing you.
    We’re all in this sick hobby because we love watches. Seems maybe a bit stern and unfair to expect us to feign complete disregard for our little wrist treasures.
    I’m not sure I can define when a watch is wearing you - and you not it - but I’d suppose it’s when you’re acting unnatural and not being yourself.
    Could be self consciousness of “not being worthy,” could be egotism of “king of the room.”
    Both are dead ends. No one else cares what you’re wearing. Almost no one even notices.

    Mate, I hear what you say…..but one of your comments I think it was off base….I own a 24.5 circumference wrist…..a 36mm case watch on it, looks like a little toy……I wear typically 40mm + case watches mostly, and I really enjoy my 44mm YM II, and my 45mm PANZERA Flieger….not because they make me feel manly, but because they feel right and proper on my tree stumps for arms I got…..not all of us, are of normal size…..whatever that might be…!

    • @TheRandomWatchDude
      @TheRandomWatchDude  2 месяца назад +2

      Yes I totally agree that it's all about proportion. A 36mm watch works up to a certain size, even quite large wrists. But if you truly have a 24.5cm wrist (which is f***ing huge) then 36mm is like a pimple!

  • @dainluke
    @dainluke 2 месяца назад +1

    I currently own two Tudors. I definitely do take too many wrist shots (but that’s slowed tremendously in recent months), and I definitely do admire them too often.
    Cost-wise, although I could afford them whilst maintaining a decent amount in savings, being a South African means that even a Tudor will be a significant value. A decent house or apartment in South Africa can be had for as little as 20X the combined value of my two Tudors. That kinda gives you an idea.
    I don’t necessarily feel unworthy, but I also don’t feel like I’m above them. I love watches for what they are and I don’t wear them to show off, because frankly, I’m not a very special person. Had I not purchased my two Tudors, and had I not purchased a few other unnecessary assets, I could’ve purchased a Rolex Explorer or perhaps an Oyster Perpetual. I was also considering a used JLC Polaris. Unfortunately I absolutely did not feel worthy of owning any of those pieces, and the feeling of having that much money in a single item on my wrist was something I couldn’t get past, and probably never will.

    • @TheRandomWatchDude
      @TheRandomWatchDude  2 месяца назад +1

      Very insightful, and thanks for sharing. I think self worth and jewellery are strongly related, and watches are a form of jewellery (let's be honest) so getting ones priorities right is so important to enable the watch to just be relaxed on its owner.

    • @dainluke
      @dainluke 2 месяца назад

      @@TheRandomWatchDude That’s very true. I have always liked to think of them as cool gadgets that everyone should own (within their means). But as with what you said, at a certain point, the line between premium tool/gadget and pure jewellery begins to blur. I think Tudor sort of teeters on that line, and I think that modern Rolex/Omega are firmly over that line.
      It may be a bit naive of me, but I personally believe that Tudor watches - especially on the used market - are relatively accessible items. I think that for what you pay, you get an impressive and robust mechanical movement with all of the bells and whistles you’d expect from a Rolex/Omega, but at a far more stomach-able price tag.
      To me, at least, they don’t feel like impractical items at all. I definitely do feel privileged to be able to have afforded them though. One would’ve been sufficient, but I’m grateful to have been able to grab a second, as it helps curb boredom and buffer inevitable service intervals.

    • @TheRandomWatchDude
      @TheRandomWatchDude  2 месяца назад +1

      @@dainluke I think you're right that Tudor is accessible in luxury watch terms, and not an ostentatious brand either. Curbing boredom is probably the reason most of us can't stop buying watches. You have great self-awareness to see that, as most of us deny it!

  • @JohnBowman-ut4dz

    Hi Mark interesting video the only thing that might relate to me is I own some quite expensive watches but when you look at me and my relaxed dress sense ( not the most fashionable trendy person) you definitely would not expect me to own watches like these. People expect someone hoo can afford these luxury watches to be immaculate dressed so do sometimes get asked if they are real.(In a strange way quite like going under the radar because own watches for me and not for someone else) But what is even more unusual is I might not be the trendy UST person but my watches have to be perfect . strange???? So am I owning the watch or is the watch owning me what do you think ???? Thanks John.

      @TheRandomWatchDude  2 месяца назад +1

      Thanks John, well that's a interesting tale, and I relate as I like to wear my nice watches in very informal attire too. I think as long as they fit real nice, and you're not flashing the ice on your dial to attract attention then you are owning the watch, rather than vice versa.

      Aside from the notion of wearing a watch that's excessively large or too expensive to enjoy due to constant worry, none of the other points made sense. And then you start the video, how about thay for social media exposure, by saying your Rolex isn't wearing you, that it isn't girly. Now that doesn't strike as something that a confident guy would have to state reassure himself (why even care?), and while doing so you turn your wrist as if you had to double check 😂
