very true. i lived free bird life style in Kerala as a kid and then i went to America i find Kerala teens timid and not outgoing as i am. if i invite them for outing @ nights they could not come even i offer them to pick them up in my vehicle. i felt bad that time but i never begged as i went on myself without them because i was like that in Kerala. i was very young to know why they are like that then but later on i understood it was not their fault but it was how they raised back in Kerala and it continues even in america. my case probably 1 in a million to be raised like a free bird or my parents did not bother to look after me either way i had gotten advantage over them in mental power and self determination. at minimum age i self determined to go to work for buying car,fancy clothes and other needs without asking parents and i seek no ones help to find jobs either. all this was possible because of how i was during my childhood period.
