Nikki himself said in his autobiography, Motley Crue's fundamental concept is fusing Black Sabbath and New York Dolls. There's also the Kiss influence because of the obvious theatrics.
I saw them Wednesday, November 25, 1987 with Gun's in Lakeland FL . But Guns had just joined the Crue on this tour and it was sill being advertised as Motley Crue with Whitesnake. We hadn't as yet heard of Guns N Roses and were very disappointed. When Guns played the crowd just stood there silent with very little fan fare or cheering. It was as if we were just all waiting for them to finish so we could at least see the Crue. The show was double sold out for two days, and this was the 2nd of such shows. The Crue played at a higher and faster tempo so their songs sounded as if someone pressed the fast forward button on an old tape player ( but not quite that fast). It was cool but fell short of the many concerts I've seen since.
I saw them I Jacksonville on that tour. GnR was unknown except to a very few. They were one of the only bands that I went out and got their CD the very next day after seeing them. Slash was sloppy af, but their songs were catchy and who could have guessed they would become the biggest band in the world?
@@doctordetroit4339 Well thankyou for validating what I wrote about the crowd's reaction. It wasn't negative but far short of enthusiastic as everybody was expecting Whitesnake. My gut tells me they were upstanding the Crue and were replaced by Guns.
@@bombswabs3041 I remember being disappointed in Motley for only playing about 90 minutes, back then most shows were 2 hours easy. I think I saw Whitesnake headline shortly after, when they hit it really big and were on MTV all the time. That may have something to do with it.
We're about the same age. I wish that I would've seen that tour. Never saw Motley, but did see GNR twice during the Use Your Illusion tour. But I wish I had seen them on the Appetite tour. If only I could go back in time.
You would've loved them in 82 when they were on tour with Ozzy. I saw them in Memphis when I was sixteen years old, the night Ozzy got locked up for "pissing on a cop car".
@@thedude4672 The second time I saw GnR was on the illusion tour. Right before they caused a riot in Montreal with Metallica. That show was unreal. Axl was of course the most popular rocker at the time. It went to his head and he didn't come out until about 1 am, made us wait at least 2-3 hours. In the interim, the girls in the crowd would show their boobs on the Jumbotron so it was all good! I didn't get home until the sun came up, that is how late Axl was.
@@_Clem_H_Fandango_ truth. CRUE was untouchable roughly from 1982-1984 and beyond wild crazy violent insane, regardless if they had money or not (and in 1982 the money wasnt quite there yet)- they were already local LA legends by summer 1982 and by late 1983/early 1984 they were National/US legends and by unforgettable kickass summer & fall 1984 they were GLOBAL legends
I saw the Girls tour, Whitesnake opened up. They were good but I would have much rather have seen GnR, especially at that point in their career. According to this video, turns out GnR rotated in the Girls tour a couple weeks after I saw Crue.
@@doctordetroit4339Whitesnake was already riding very high when I saw them open for Crue. They had "Still of the Night", "Is This Love" and "Here I Go Again" released and up the charts and all over MTV. I saw Crue in mid October of 1987, pretty sure the only thing Whitesnake didn't put out at that time from their self-titled was "Give Me All Your Love" .
@@cancelbubble6535 I saw Whitesnake shortly after they exploded in the same venue I saw Motley with GnR as an opener. Whitesnake after MTV were not opening for anyone anymore. They were HUGE. It was called the "Great Whitesnake Tour" with Great White opening. I imagine promoters saw dollar signs and knew Whitesnake could pack the stands so got them off the Motley Tour. I would give my left nut to go back to the 80s.
@@doctordetroit4339I agree to a point, but I'm sure Whitesnake was contractually obligated for a set time frame on the Crue tour. I don't recall hearing about them getting fired from that tour so I'm sure they just fulfilled the contract. But yeah, going out on their own afterwards was kind of a given due to the massive success of their self-titled album. I do remember that Whitesnake/Great White tour.
@@cancelbubble6535 It had to be money. If you were a promoter...would you like to have two bands selling out arenas guaranteed or one? Motley was selling out no matter who opened. So was Whitesnake when they got big, plus Coverdale needed the cash as he was close to BK.
Mick Mars made that band. Just like EVH made Van Halen. The 80s rock was defined by the guitar players. Loved all those guys. George Lynch Dokken. Randy Rhoades with Ozzy. It was a great time to be a fan.
I saw Dokken at Monsters Of Rock in 1988. They were great. I get so sick of people shitting on Nikki. People saying if He'd of croaked in 1989 Motley would have been so much cooler etc etc. Nikki is not perfect. People just need to take the music for what it is: Music!
And from 83-87 let’s not forget Ozzy’s guitarist while the Crue was in tow. A phenomenal beast to say the least: JEL leaving only 2 years to close out the 80’s…
I remember the first time I saw them in the Ritz NYC there was about 100 people…… insane! What a show! They came back to do an MTV concert and the place was sold out! It was a deluge of rain that night……. We had to park around 10 blocks away (city blocks are huge) and while walking to the gig drunk off my ass I lost my ticket. There was 4 of us so I took my friends keys and told them to enjoy the show while I sleep it off. Soaking wet I trudged back to my buddies van and with about 2 blocks to go something caught my eye in the blaring city lights…. It was my ticket floating on top of a giant puddle. About a half hour later I showed up to the show soaked through my underwear, made my way up to the front, found my friends and at the end of the show Slash jumped right on top of me….. What a night!

I was backstage with Motley Crue and with GNR at the Capital Centre in Largo, MD on different nights. Never saw any drugs with Motley Crue, ever...during or after the shows. They weren't even drunk. Didn't go to the bus, hotel or plane though. I had met and hung out with L.A. Guns a few times at the early stages of their career. (I was all about Kelly Nickels lol). They were wild and trashed the hotel once, but I didn't see any drugs. The night I saw GNR, Duff was so wasted on stage that he had to lay down while playing. I had no desire to go backstage but Lonn Friend, who I had known for a while, invited my friend and me backstage, so we went. My girlfriend knew Tracii Guns, and Lonn wanted me to meet Steven Adler. I remember walking into the first room and seeing needles everywhere. I mean everywhere. One of the roadies said they were for Vitamin B-12 shots. Duff was laying on a bench and looked ash gray and almost dead. You know how sometimes you get a feeling of impending doom? After about a minute, my girlfriend and I hightailed it out of there as fast as we could. It was seriously scary and nowhere we wanted to be. I remember walking up the long back driveway where the buses pull in and there were dozens of fans, mostly teenage boys, standing at the entrance waiting to get a glimpse of their bus as it pulled out. It was so sad. IMO, GNR were the serious druggies, not Motley Crue. They all had their moments, but none of MC ended up like Steven Adler. Lines of coke are nothing compared to needles of heroin. How dare Slash make Tommy Lee look bad. Slash gives himself too much credit and is probably still pissed off that people liked Motley Crue more than them. Yeah, Nikki and Tracii were friends but, other than that, Motley Crue probably had no respect for them either.
@@grathapilotAt least Axl's on time to shows these days, but GNR now isn't nearly as incredible as that classic lineup was. When Steven got canned, GNR lost their greatest rock band ever status in my opinion.
Yes, once the pervert is he straddling, started sexually harassing Vince Neil‘s wife everything went downhill from that point after Vince Neil literally knocked out Izzy straddling at the MTV award show. That started the feud between Vince and Axl Rose. It was none of Axl roses business. No man should put his hand on another man’s woman, so Vince would be in the right.
I think every bit of this is from Slash and/or Duff's book or maybe from the Crue book or one of Nikki's Heroin Diaries, lol. I'm a massive fan of both bands so I know I've read this all before.
So the whole two needles in the chest story was a fake, I'm not surprised and I've been saying to my friends lately it would turn out to be a fake. Nikki Vanilli's whole act is just that, an act.
Don't we all? The rest of Motley Crue are impossible to defend. Vince Neil can't sing anymore, Tommy Lee is a 50 year old teenager and Nikki Sixx is a major douche who can't even play bass.
I saw this tour in ATL...famous show when Axl dove off-stage onto a security guard who was roughing up a girl...it was during It's So Easy (the opener)....he was handcuffed, taken roughly through the crowd back to a holding area, then arrested and thrown into the Fulton Co jail AND...my friend who was in the same holding cell for disrespectful drunken behavior with a cop after his friend was pulled over for a traffic violation, got to hang and talk with Axl for 30 min before he sprung bail. ALL A TRUE STORY! BTW...G&R played 2 more songs off sans Axl, then Adler did a short drum solo and walked off stage too boos from the crowd. FYI...Motely Crue was good that night, not great.
Ratt were alright but they fizzled out pretty quickly, they had a great EP a great debut, a strong follow up then pretty boring stuff from then on and while Motley and GNR were at the very top til the early 90's most people were saying "WTF Happened to Ratt, remember them?" Because they just didn't have the songs, Crue and GNR had it all in spades hence the jealousy from the odd Ratt and Twisted Sister fan who pop their head out once in a while to talk ish.
@@83dude Pearcy, like Debrow, could not sign a note but it didn't matter. Besides, Pearcy wrote most of the songs so he has that going for him. I love Ratt due to their twin axes in perfect sync...Steven's vocals don't matter with riffs and hooks like that.
Saw GnR open for Aerosmith in 87. Went for them and was a bit dissapointed. They didn't have the sound system to fill an arena at that time and you had to struggle to figure out what song they were playing. Maybe that was the opposite of this situation with Crue in that Aerosmith didn't allow GnR to have a substantial sound system??

Had THAT earlier, younger less messed up version of CRUE toured with Appetite-era GNR, then THAT truly wouldve been One HELL of a kickass badass insane & insanely crazy show yet in that rare unique kickass/badass scenario I would have to give the CRUE (1981-1984 era CRUE) the edge/advantage both over GNR as well as over many many other small & large bands equally.

I saw them Nov 21st in Chattanooga TN..insane show. I cant remember seeing Slash upright the whole show, lol
@@jeremybilbrey1133 Slash was drunk or stoned when I saw him on that tour, he was wasted and said as much on stage
I saw that tour in '87...it was phenomenal. debauchery at it is finest..lol..especially for a 13 yr old,lol
I saw the tour also, I commented above my memories of it. It was a blast! I was in my 20s. Hot babes galore!
Motley is a joke these days... Wouldn't pay 1 cent to see the clowns they have become
So glad I saw them decades ago, such a disappointment now.
seen them in Dc, Pittsburg, AC, and syracuse in last 2 years.. excellent .
Agreed, had opportunity on shout tour and passed. Saw bootleg live video. They were never a great live act.
Unless they play to a backing track, it's like a watching a car crash.
True saw em on T of P and Dr Feelgood. Didn't sound that great back then. Horrible now......
I saw the Girls tour, Whitesnake opened up. They were good but I would have much rather have seen GnR, especially at that point in their career. According to this video, turns out GnR rotated in the Girls tour a couple weeks after I saw Crue.
I thought Motley played way too short a set list. GnR was pretty good. Whitesnake was about to explode back then too.
Great story! Someone was def looking out for you that nite.

Idk man. Vince has been knocking out girls for years 😂
Just like he killed Tommy Hilfiger in a restaurant?! He totally bitched out.

They played the Hollywood Sportatorium outside of Ft Lauderdale that tour, G n Rs last song was “Jungle”. Little did they know that a few of Crues roadies had climbed up the light rig over Slash, carrying Pepperidge Farm Goldfish bags..

Motley Crue had 2 good albums. In 45 years!
In your opinion what Are those two good albums
@@RobertSchaffer-sd2yr Shout at the devil and Dr Feel-good. The rest were just fair at best.
@@tuffteddy1446No way. Motley's debut album was their best. It was unique. Nobody sounded like that.
Then they started sounding like mainstream glam rock and became popular and bored me. Shout was a good album too. Theatre had a couple ("Home Sweet Home"). Girls had a few good songs, as did Dr. Feelgood. Everything after was meh.
I think New Tatoo was a true return to form of the whole LA sunset vibe. But then again I'm still living in that era anyway.! Screw the haters.!!
4 albums.
Fun fact: Tommy Lee admits that Pantera was the only band that could drink Motley Crue under the table.
Here, as in the last video, we're getting separate versions of the same events. With other outlets, by the time you hear the second rock star's telling, years have passed and you've largely forgotten what the first one said. It's great to have everything in one place, so damn thorough and LEGIT
We had a bootleg cassette copy of Appetite for destruction in march or april of 1987. A friends brother played with Don Dokken and got his hands on this bootleg. The sound was terrible but the album was obviously gonna be huge. It don't really matter if anybody believes me or not because ultimately its not that big of a deal and don't change my life in any way now. Several of us dudes in high school were one mixed bunch, none of us were jocks, not even burnouts, more like a weird mix of creative nerds and gear heads. At that time i had to hide my love of classic country music back then because it just wasn't cool. I found friends who were into alot of the same. We were a weird bunch. But we all knew that album was gonna be huge about a year before it was.
We're you in AZ at that time, by any chance?
I’m not much of a fan of either of these bands but god damn I miss when music was exciting, and current (and young) major acts touring together was an event

I used to think getting rekt was fun...Ghod knows why. It's a juvenile, empty experience. "Yeh bro, let's get wasted dude, like, far out"

Second big headlining tour
Ratt > Motley Crue. Has Slash not heard of Ratt before? Makes Motley look like polished turds
I doubt that
Ratt and Motley had something in common, a studio only frontman.
I'm as big a Ratt fan as anyone....but Motley ruled metal back then, on the glam side of things. There were in the press as much as on the radio.
