Met him at the meet and greet, at the last Velvet Revolver show in Amsterdam. One of the great groovers, with a massive sound and don't forget his background vocals! For me he is THE drummer for the Cult. When he does his groove on "She sells sanctuary" ,they sound so much better. Huge fan. I know so much more about him, after this pod cast. Well done guys!
Most of the comments state what I think... Top Drummer. I just want to add the fact that Matt Sorum is 63 years old... 63 !!! Looks like he is in his late 40's!
I've met Matt at the Rainbow. He was super cool and nice. I'm in Brazil now watching this. And am also from here. Matt is authentic and talented. It was the best meeting him. Great interview you guys!
Thanks, guys. I'm from Brazil. GnR was a huge musical influence for a lot of people down here. Matt Sorum is such a great artist and the easy way he talks is possible for us to understand about what happens behind the curtains.
Love Matt! He is the definition of cool. I highly recommend reading his book, it is really good. He does not boast much about how he helps out in his community, like the school music programs, helping our vets etc. Just an overall good dude.
this guy looks great at 63 ys old. he was probably the 1st drummer i realized i like when i was like 10-11. he plays quite simple style (as i realized when i was quite older) as he also spoke in this interview but feels the music right and the drum sound on Use you illision was great. his faces as dedication to drumming in you could be mine music video was the gamechanger to me. from that point i always wanted to play drums and i made that dream true years later
One thing that makes this interview really, really great for me is that, when Matt talks, he has this 1000 mile stare, and you can clearly see that, as he's remembering things, he can see it... great stuff...great memories from the heart... Doesn't get any better then that....
I really enjoy listening to Matt. He's got a great rhythm in the way he talks. Also, he's freakin' super cool and has such great experience in Rock and Roll, the 80's and 90's, and it's really fun to "re-live" his stories with him as they unfold easily with his style of talking. He's cool!
What an amazing, chill, warm interview. Matt is a solid drummer and I have to admit, I was also fonder of Adler in GNR but Matt is a super down to earth dude. Great drummer, even greater man.
I heard Matt recorded Locomotive in one take! Great to hear the back story to his career. It wasn’t mentioned but Gregg Bisonnette said that he met Matt at an audition for a David Lee Roth The use your illusion videos were pivotal in my influence and def Matt and slash in that way!
He is a great drummer and interesting person… I saw G’nR back in ‘91 before the Use Your Illusion albums were released and just before Izzy left the band… it was a great show except the security was just everywhere because of the Saint Louis riot a week or so before 👍 I like Matt because he is a part of that LA clique but is still down to earth enough to be bearable.
For me, Matt plays energetically, he takes it more seriously when he plays drum than Steven. 😁 For a new drummer who is joining Gun's N Roses, it's not easy to learn and show their song. Only Matt and Bryan Mantia are capable of filling this position. Even Slash never plays the original solo of their song, but the key is the drummer.
If I had the opportunity to talk to Matt, I would ask him where did he get the inspirarion for the drum fills of a few of my favorite songs. I would also let him know that his drumming is beautiful because he creatively comes up with nice grooves and executes them consistently throughout the song, not like other drummers like Ulrich that plays differently every single time. Matt’s drumming is my inspiration, and my drumming is pretty much thanks to him.
My band The Passenger used to play Slither. We played in the club TJ’s in Newport (Wales, UK) one time in 2006/7 maybe. The band on before us didn’t sound like us or VR for that matter but they played Slither. It was great how that record hit us all and how that band was very modern and not a GnR throwback. Good times.
Matt really played his role well. He never tried to replace Adler,he never rubbed it in his face in magazines or interviews. He brought his own flavor and emotion to guns and tbh that came off more Aerosmith because of it. He had that tight, low drum tone feel. Obviously adler was loose and poppy and thats why we love him but matt did great
This was great. Really enjoyed it. Well done lads 👏 One thing missing though was the question as to why wasn’t Matt asked to join current version of GnR? His inclusion would have only made it better imo
I saw him 91/92 in Vienna (Use your Illusion Tour). He looked like an brutal biker in those days. Today he looks more like a nice guy from next door. His haircut improved..
Matt Sorum is my favorite drummer of Guns and Roses. Much better than the one they have for the last many years. I wish Guns and Roses make peace with him and bring him back.
The Rise of Velvet Revolver Documentary is really good. The doc is largely based on finding a singer. Even has a tad bit of stress/drama that great musicians can go through to find the right front man. I won't spoil it. Ignore me if you have seen it. I was lucky enough to see Matt Sorum with The Cult and VR! 🤘
Didnt knew Bill Price was their sound man . For those who don't know Bill Price was responsible for the Illusions albums sound. I became interested in mixing because of him. RIP
Matt's so funny .. I wasn't a good surfer ( I was 6) So my Mom, got my a Drum Set .... Ha Ha Ha Wait , Matt must've been impressed , they wore leather pants for him. Wooo Hooo
Mostly half of the songs on the Illusion abums are or Izzy’s or “co-written” by him. 6 songs are 100% Izzy’s, Dust N’ Bones, You Ain’t the First, Bad Obsession, Double Talkin’ Jive, 14 Years and Pretty Tied Up, he appears as if he had co-written two of this songs (Dust N’ Bones and 14 Years) only because other members contributed with some minor things to them. 3 songs are a collaboration between Izzy and Axl, been Right Next Door to Hell mostly Axl’s and Don’t Cry, and You Could Be Mine mostly Izzy’s. 1 song (Perfect Crime) was a collab between those two but with some Slash’ input and finally Izzy had some minor input on Bad Apples. This adds up to a total of 12 songs of 30 because Don’t Cry appears twice. For the other songs, 8 where 100% Axl’s, 7 a collab between Axl and Slash, 2 covers and 1 from Duff’s, so Matt isn’ wrong in this video.
After Guns n Roses, Matt rejoined The Cult and recorded BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL, an entire album of new music before starting Velvet Revolver. It would've been cool to ask Matt... "When you joined Guns n Roses, were Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy disappointed because maybe they wanted you to join their band? And also, what's the story behind you rejoining The Cult after Guns and were they disappointed when you decided to do the Velvet Revolver project and go in that direction and leave The Cult once again?"
This is all in his book: 1. Ian and Billy were happy for Matt when he joined GNR. He was joining the biggest band in the world at the time. 2. I believe the Cult broke up for awhile after that Beyond Good and Evil record. Matt didn’t just quit again.
This guy looks great to be 63. This is proof that no alcohol, being vegetarian playing music you love, when it serves you and a little bit of good genetics can do wonders
And, on a side note, how good does this guy look for almost 63 years of age. What a legend!
All that 80s blow
Matt Sorum is the real deal.
❤
This hit my soul...I remember being around the same age..12 or 13 discovering the VR material...Lets all keep rocking💯✅
I wish Matt was part of the reunion
Me too.
actually guns are pretty ridicolous as a band with axl (his voice is terrible now)
Actually Axl is quite a bit better now than he was. He's even lost some weight. I believe he listened to criticism.
I wish steven and izzy were part of the reunion

Adler and Sorum were two of my biggest musical influences growing up. Love this!

Matt is the ONLY reason i am a drummer, and i am Danish. He influenced drummers all over the world.
Great interview. I could listen to Matt Sorum talk all day. He is just Terrific.. And Inspirational.
Totally agree! I logged onto RUclips to watch GNR videos and found myself on this interview and watched the entire thing. Very cool dude.
Me too :)

Matt was one of the drummers in the 90s I looked up to. I miss his drumming and his energy! He's so much fun to watch.
Met him years ago backstage and so humble. Awesome guy!
I would love to have a beer with him and Slash at the rainbow and hear their stories from back in the day.
that would be cool the stories would be awesome
Both sober

Love Matt. Bought and read his book too.
One of my All Time Favorite drummers 🤘🤘
Thank you so much for this. Matt is incredible. Would pay a lot of money to see him back in GnR!
Matt could easily be Matthew McConoughay’s slightly older brother 😮
Truly an interesting, realistic interview, about a positive rock and roll experience, with a real rock star. very well done gentlemen.
Thank you! 🤘
Thanks, guys. I'm from Brazil. GnR was a huge musical influence for a lot of people down here. Matt Sorum is such a great artist and the easy way he talks is possible for us to understand about what happens behind the curtains.

The greatest question no one ever asks Sorum is “How scared 💩less was Axl Rose of Velvet Revolver?
Matt is cool man
Those VR albums were killer. In many ways a much better band with better songs that GnR.

Cool. How do you know all this? Did you mean Izzy wrote both lyrics n music to those 12 songs?

No, he looks pretty bad!
Wasnt "you could be mine" written prior to the afd album?? In that case he could not have been so involved in that song...
This guy looks great to be 63. This is proof that no alcohol, being vegetarian playing music you love, when it serves you and a little bit of good genetics can do wonders
Matt is currently working on a project with Corey Feldman
Steven Adler
SHOULD BE BEHIND AXL /SLASH DUFF AND OF COURSE IZZY !!
JUST THOSE 5 GUYS WOULD BE AWESOME AGAIN!!!
Matt Sorum is a real dude… shame he’s not back in the band.
Hes too mouthy, plenty of stories from VR with him and Scott constantly butting heads which ended the whole thing
He saw the Beatles live on Sullivan? How freaking old is Matt? ha ha ha
Certainly has done very well for his age
Hm....no words on neurotic outsiders? What a great little band it was!
This dude is cool af... 63? Wtf??
Che alguien que lo traduzca

Sorum sounds similar to Weiland, when they speak.
