Rescued Seal Remembers Rescuers?

- It's hard to tell if this female seal really remembered us when we recaptured her to follow up on her healing progress - but once she was allowed out of the rescue net, after Naude had checked up on her, she totally relaxed and "posed" in front of the rescuers, as if she was showing off her old entanglement scar. Maybe she remembered that we helped her, and that we are no threat to her.
Recaptures are very important for Ocean Conservation Namibia, they are the best proof that rescues work, especially when we get our hands on a seal like this. She clearly had a very deep entanglement, and there is no sign of injury left, she is strong and healthy and simply beautiful. 🦭

the fact that you're seeing the same seal a year apart is a clear sign you're doing the right thing
It's good to see that the rescued seals have healed from their wounds thanks to the OCN team's work.

She did look like she was remembering them . Oh if only she could talk..what a story she could tell.
We only need to learn understanding her language.
@@Itsjustme-Justme You are so right. Thanks for reminding me that even animals have a "language" We just need to listen
Looked to me more like you had her surrounded and she couldn't go anywhere. She did not look friendly or "remembering" which is wishful thinking on yours and everyone else's part.
She'd be like "damnit, not these guys again" :)
@@dap777754 ME TO !!! LOL
She was like , "How dare you... Oh- it's you guys. Hello. Thank you. See my neck? It feels much better and it's healing well 😌 Thank you for freeing me. I appreciate you. Truly. Xxxx Okay bye xxx" ! Xxxx
A million seals on a beach and somehow these guys can spot one with a mole on its lip. Amazing. I’m glad there are people like this on the planet.
It's wonderful to see proof, in the flesh, that even a very badly wounded seal can heal and thrive once their entanglement is removed. Thank you so very much for saving so many seals like this lovely lady!
Makes me so happy to see this ❣️
Right on! Aunt Kaz!
They should have brought a fish along to calm him down and make known that they mean no harm.
@@rodenreyes6320 Sorry, the cutting of these entanglements really are necessary. Because in many cases, they are inhibiting the seals' ability to move and feed. Sometimes, the fishing lines and hooks and plastics
are wrapped around the mouth , jaw or upper chest . How are the OCN team members supposed to pry open a seal's mouth to force feed a fish ? If a seal is in " fight or flight mode " from stress, they are not going to want to eat. Also, the OCN team member, could sustain an injury or infection or amputation of a finger (s). These seals are not dogs or animals being trained with positive reinforcement
@@rodenreyes6320 Sadly that wouldn't have worked. For one thing, the seals are wild and view humans as a potential predator, so they are in fight or flight mode the second you get too close. For another, it is actually illegal to feed most large wildlife, as we don't want them to become habituated to us.
If a tiger shark can return to one female diver 7 times to get a hook removed, it is definitely within the realm of possibility for these animals to learn that you guys are there to help. I guess it's just going to take a lot of time. She's lovely!
the tiger shark didn't get physically captured and roughly tackled in order to remove those hooks. that's why it keeps coming back.
@@thehulk86 yeah fr man they should just let them die from wounds instead of slightly inconveniencing them...
@@thehulk86 sharks have mutual relationships with other species who will give them a good service when those pesky parasites start itching, it would make sense that at least a small minority of those sharks would have the ability to explore and develop new similar behaviours. i agree with you that the stress of capture is likely too much for these seals to willingly comply. maybe after several generations they will accept it more and adapt their behaviour.
@@braveheart4603 possibly, but it's highly unlikely as seals probably aren't capable of that kind of generational learning. Plus since only a tiny fraction of these seal colonies ever have a single direct interaction with the rescuers, there's virtually no opportunity to build trust between both sides.
I need the link, I want to see it
These are the most awesome nets. Thank you to whomever designed them in order to make rescues easier and safer for all. ❤️
I was just thinking that, it’s not like you can walk into Walmart and ask for a seal net?
@@4loops43 I think they are custom built.
If they aren't custom designs, I wouldn't be surprised if they were originally meant for hunting seals and adapted for this preferable purpose.
I totally agree with this comment - Thanks So Very Much
they are really cool and gentle looking nets, well degined indeed!
You know you are making progress when you start recapturing seals you've previously saved👍
Must be very rewarding to see up close the fruits of your labors. Thank you everyone!
It really is! Thanks for watching and caring!
You do amazing work thank you so much!😘❤
Maybe she had a moment of deja vu lol. like waiiiittttt didn't this already happen to me? With you people? didn't we do this before? WHAT IS GOING ON!! Lol
I called this. Seals are intelligent. They remember and communicate to others.
The seal remembered the last time it came out of the net and calmed down right away. Wish they could tell the other seals that these guys are just there to help!
Maybe they can. Cristina Zenato’s reef sharks can. And with their sheep noises, the seals are quite vocal. That must mean something, right?
Talking to her and the petting “it’s okay” warms the heart. Love what y’all are doing... thank you so much

So true!!! Thanks for watching!
get out there worldwide people and clean up the mess. we do here in new zealand. to save sea life like these seals.
Antoine comforting each capture with his calm words or his touch is really touching. 😊
She's BEAUTIFUL even with that scar. I like to see a recapture upload once in a while because I think recaptures are clear evidence that your rescue efforts are making great differences.
We totally agree! Thanks!
Her wound reminded me of my old rescue dog, Molly. Molly was found with an embedded collar that had to be surgically removed, and though it was healed by the time I adopted her, she had an indentation around her neck that you could see immediately. She was a little sensitive too, when I stroked her neck, perhaps she remembered the pain of the collar, but she lived a good life with me and was a happy puppy. Thank you for checking up on these guys!
Thank you for giving her the love she deserved.
I worked with shelter dogs and I remember similar cases. Fair play for giving her a good life!
Her scar was probably super sensitive.
You guys are some of the best people here on earth. Thank you for all that you do for these seals!
AMEN TO THIS COMMENT FOR SURE - YOU GUYS ARE TRUE ANGELS - THANKS SO VERY MUCH
I dare say the seal was surrounded, not recognising you... sorry, but the slight hissing and the immediate run when seeing the escape route ;)
Regardless, you guys are awesome. While I'm unable to do anything more to help, I will give a thank you, and hope to support more financially when I'm able to... again, thank you :)
From my perspective of the video, she was facing a clear (and wide) line of escape but gazed BACK at her rescuers - calmly and without fear as well. To my mind, she clearly remembered her rescuers.
Love how Antoine always tried to soothe the animals. Thanks to the team for your great work!!
I was thinking the same thing " its ok buddy its going to be ok"

Soothe? Every touch is adding to her stress, especially rubbing or patting. Please stop anthropomorphizing animals.
@@virginiamoss7045 There are plenty of animals that respond positively to rubbing, especially mammals as for most mammals, that will remind them of being bathed by their mothers when they’re young. Just without the wetness that would normally accompany the rubbing motion.
@@decimation9780 This is true when the animal trusts the one doing the petting, certainly not when wild prey animals are being captured to be lunch as the seal sees it. Cats and others are calmed by creating all around pressure which unconsciously reminds them of being in the womb. That doesn't seem to be the case with seals, but it sure would make these captures less stressful for all involved if it was.
“Is that you Tony? I didn’t recognize you with your new hair style!” She said 😂😂
These humans all look alike to the seals. 😁
Wow, I had missed that one! Yes, I think she definitely remembered you. And it’s great to see Antoine was back. Congratulations OCN, you are such a great team.
I'm glad you don't resort to drugs and trust Nature's healing force!

She remembers and thanks you 💖. We all thank you for caring and saving these beautiful seals. I just wish the fisherman would be responsible and care about the animals of the seas
Seal be like: i have seen those weirdos who walk on 2 flippers before
She did remember you! That you helped her feel better and let her free!
More like she was literally surrounded by all sides, looking for an exit. Snarled aggressively and ran through.
It looked like she felt cornered when she saw them surrounded around her, but nonetheless she scurried off when they seemed harmless. Great job 👏🏾
They don't appear to stop to think about being cornered, they usually barrel right through in a panic, no matter what. So the fact that she stopped and looked around meant that she was interested in them, and perhaps recognized their voices and possibly faces. Voices for sure.
She returned to show you all your hard work has great results. That must of felt good. For you and a result for the seal. Who took a bow then left.👏✂️👣👍🌟
Yes! Thank you!
Awwww, love Antoine saying: 'That's Ok'. Thanks, OCN!!!!
"Hey, you guys look familiar. I remember you. Thanks for stopping by......that Tony is a cutie, isn't he? See you later, gotta go."
Awesome!
Hopefully, one day the rescued seal will return with their close hommies and stay over a weekend on your wooden deck!
You know, have some shrimp barbecue, lots of beer, smoke a couple of reefers...
I love your compassion and dedication to helping these animals, who have been injured (and regularly perish) due to the ignorance and laziness of humans. Great job team! 👊🏼💙❤️💫
at 0:45 Antoine was doing 'run with the seals', so cute.
Good to see they are healing up well.
You guys are the greatest. Thank you for all you do to help these little creatures survive and recover from what would be a long, painful death.
She's like "wow, these guys must be my secret admirers!"
What a beautiful moment she definitely remembered being freed from pain ! Thank you for your hard work
@Klemheist 100%. But that is isn't the feel good concept people want to accept.
@Klemheist still a bit defensive but not panicked.
Conflicting emotions.
@Klemheist Yeah, I think since they had her surrounded, she didn't know which way to go, so she was just standing her ground for a second. But im so happy to see she's all healed up
They have a terrific sense of smell, so there is some chance that once free of the net, the rescuers smelled "familiar". Ans on land they can hear 1 to 22.5 kHz. It did seem, for a beautiful moment, that she felt calm.
Omg that is amazing .who says the animals don't know and feel just like us? You guys made our Sunday .. Thank you so much. NYC ..one
They dont do it in every single way....sure some but not all.....
@@phoenixflamegames1 We don't know what they feel and what they don't... not to mention that humans feel things differently.

She was like, “ I’m surrounded by some of the best humans in the world!!” She was star struck🤩🥳🥰 Plus she saw that Tony was back! ❤️❤️❤️
no, she was looking for an escape route, the group had her kind of surrounded upon release
She didn't like the odds of 4 or 5 people standing around her in a circle, so she was waiting to see who would move first.
I don't know. I think she just wanted sardine treat or something ;-)
This is a good way to start my Sunday. Glad she has healed well from her old injury which was obviously quite serious at the time.
I’m so proud of you good people and the example you set for us all, I tell everyone about your work.
She is like here we go again daam. Why always me 😂😂
Those deep wounds are a danger to their lives - great work OCN!
I know a man who gives sanctuary to hunted boars near his cottage in the woods. Sometimes he provides the only food source to those who were shot but survived and need time to heal. You'd think the boars are goners, surely they will later trust the wrong human and get shot. Not so. They know exactly who is who in the forest and recognise the man by sight and smell, they even know his car. It's indeed possible that the seal recognizes the team.
The running with the seals. Brilliant.
