- Another fun welding project in the Dirthead Shed. This time I get rid of the loud, old exhaust system on my rock crawler and replace it with something a little quieter, and a whole lot more legal. Lots of tips and tricks in this episode.

I love realistic fabrication videos like this. 95% of us are working with just what we have laying around! Normalize scrap fabricated exhaust! 👍🏻
It’s always so satisfying
It's funny how "loud" changes as we age.
Totally
I went from open headers to Flowmaster hush powers 😂
I prefer a quiet exhaust on my rigs now also
@@JeepTeriyaki I put resonators on everything now, the good ones dont kill power at all but they get rid of annoying drones and a couple of DBs.
I had a thrush glass pack on my zj in high school. Recently pulled it out of storage and forgot, the cringe was real. Flowmaster 50 from here on out.
I love how you blend frugal and well thought out spending money where it needs to be not on bs that’s just for flash . And stepping outside the box . Fantastic build as always
Thanks!
Such a great comment
Agree loud pipes get old in a hurry! Awesome truck and your Mazgrande overview reminded me of the DED segment where you mated the Mazda and Toyota bell housing together. I thought that was unbelievable. Keep it up Dave!
Thanks! It’s hanging in there. That was a wild project
It STILL is!
Like most, when I was young I wanted loud. But unfortunately most people equate loud and good and they are definately not the same! How many people have you seen with a hole in a muffler or just a blown out crappy glasspack who are "loud" but sound like junk and yet they seem to like it? Same with Harleys - there's good loud, then just loud for loud's sake (for some reason many aftermarket HD pipes sound 'wet' or 'flatulent' to me instead of "crisp" or "sharp" - really crappy). These days I'd rather have much quieter so nobody knows what I've got or if I'm trying hard or not! As for the old 'if it's too loud you're too old' line well they're right - I AM too old!
@@donhappel9566 all valid points
This is what I always hoped all these car shows would evolve to--- just people working on stuff in the garage. Exactly like this. No endless corporate sponsorship plugs for endless high dollar parts, just a hey look at me putting together a really cool project. Totally relatable approach, I also spent a few years in muffler shop among many other types of shops, you learn to weld there. When I saw an actual exhaust stand being used and then the story behind it, I felt right at home. This is easily one of my favorite videos right now, thanks!
I really like this approach too. I would much rather sell the lifestyle and knowledge than a bunch of parts
@@thedirtheadshed I am starting to see this in other shows too, I think this is the way to go. No diss to the other shows, but it's becoming apparent to me, a recently retired life long mechanic, that you are the real working tech out of all these guys. Carry on!
So true - how many YT channels start out good but as they grow they get more "produced" and then get sponsors etc? Sure they aren't "paying you" to say Tire X or tool Y is great but how much can you believe the guy who was given free tires? I enjoy the lower production quality "just a guy in the shop" stuff more than the things where it looks like a professional video crew was at work. Much more relatable even if you don't get super cool slow mo of sparks flying and rad build montages!
@@donhappel9566 channels like Matt’s Off Road Recovery?
Think it, build it, run it! Repeat. Dirthead way. Love dirt. Thanks
Thanks! That’s it
This video has given me 80% of the inspiration I need to fix the exhaust on me jeep. I’ll find the other 20% some day
tomorrow!
@@thedirtheadshed maybe Monday. If only I worked at an exhaust shop….🤣🤣🤣
Glad I'm not the only one using second-hand exhaust tubing! This is my kinda work!
I love re using that stuff
Just love your using scraps to fix your rig. Recycling done Great...
Thank you
Just an awesome build! Great job on those videos in the old garage too! Unahcohn!!!
Thank you. I’m happy with making them
You super talented. Original. Definitely like the way you try things and see how it works out.
Thanks! Never stop learning
The Mazdagrande has always been a favorite!
Great to see it going to be more streetable.
i think at some point this summer the 7.17 axle gears have to go
Moms spaghetti is such an awesome rig. The Mazda looks like it rocks, brother. Very well done using all parts to finish a project. Brother, I did it again and found another project, lol.
They are easy to find. Hard to finish
@thedirtheadshed yes they can be. We found a 1971 mach 1 Mustang fastback in a junkyard and had to pick it up the same year I was born.
Another good episode Dave! Can't wait to see what's next.
Thank you
I love Mom's Spaghetti, very cool truck and would be a good project for some one to build.
It’s a good ol truck
great ep, like the quieter exhaust.
Thanks
Dig your nod to the mother land on your upper links. Nuff respect✊️
Glad you noticed. Cheers
Like the bell housing adaptor idea
Thanks. It was quite the project
Perfect video to motivate me to redo my exhaust. Just so happens to be my weekend project as well 😅
Nice ! Get after it
Thanks for the tips and tricks Dave
Thanks for watching
Neat trick with the hard drive platter! The magnets that are in the drives are usually extremely strong, as well, so grab those too
i keep those around too
Those inverter Millers and the self set is some pretty trick tech. My Hobart Ironman hasn’t given up the ghost yet. But when it does ..I’m looking forward to taking one of these for a spin!
The Ironman will never die…
Yeah. I know. A man can dream! Dave, (I’m John) I know your a westciaster, and I get it. I too, lived that PACNORWES life. But if you happen to make it to Vermont. Will you let me know? I’ll make sure there’s short boys and tall boys in the cooler. Brawts n tots. Happy Memorial Day to you and your entire fam damily. Aight.
Love your content Dave! And the audio was great 👍🏼
Right on. Sometimes it all comes together
Got to see MazGrande in person once when Fred was hauling it down in Oregon. Such a rad truck! Nice work on the exhaust
right on. hope you dug it
I did an 18×6" magna flo resonator on my Cherokee yesterday. No more exhaust heating up my gas tank 👍
Nice. Get it out of there!
Looks great Dave! Love all the videos
Thank you
Great episode, keep it up
Thank you!
Mom’s spaghetti is still my favorite build…but the maz grande is such a rad rig 👍🏻. Keep those fun projects coming😀😀
both are good. very similar in some aspects but totally different
Thanks dave from Australia
Thanks for watching
Sounds pretty good. Nice fix
Thanks
Back in the "olden " days when I had my mini truck. That would be known as the mid 70's. We didn't know about air bags. If you had a Datsun or a Toyota it was crank down the torsion bars. And for us Ford Courier guys it was cut the coil springs. Guilty.
Still works to this day
I actually enjoy building exhaust that way. I do have one video where I used one of those mandrel bend kits and I was very spoiled using that.
Nice. I’ve got a mandrel kit to do my ford truck with
My first ride when I got my license was an 85 Mazda B2000…… I live that you built a rock crawler out of one, that thing is just too cool!!!!!!😎
Love the old mini trucks
Your shop in SD was so cool
It was some good times in El Cajon. I enjoyed those shops
I never heard the maz grande engine before. It sounds great. The loud muffler made it sound like it had engine problems.
It runs really well. Has a cracked manifold that I should probably fix though
Gotta love using pieces from the scrap pile! I do that often myself. Clean and functional as well, nice work!
Thanks. Those are my favorite projects too
I love the bag setup! I plan to do my 79 Bronco this late summer or fall, hopefully. AirLift is great stuff, it's all I've used for decades with great success. I still have solenoid valves and whatnot from 1999 that still work. 😁
Nice . They are my favorite bags nowadays
I just can’t get over how awesome mazgrande is. Air bad suspension is too freaking cool. So rad
Thanks! It’s a fun little truck
One of my very favorite builds, and like I said before, that bellhousing idea was a stroke of genius. I wish I had a tenth of your fabrication skills.
Thanks ! I’m stoked on it too
It sounds nice. Now you can hear other noises on the truck while you’re wheeling.
true. thanks
Mom's spaghetti is pretty much my dream truck
It’s good. I drove it a couple days last week
Gonna be building an exhaust soon too. Sounds good!
Nice ! Enjoy
Here for another one!
Much appreciated
7:17's for gears, awesome.
They may be coming out soon
Thanks for another cool video
Thanks for watching
Another great video, thank you!
Thanks !
Love how you integrated the original bumper...I do the same with the PC drives as well...don't forget to keep the magnetsgreat on the tool box to hold onto bills or instructions etc...
Those magnets are SO strong
Mom's Spaghetti Rules. It will always be my favorite, but MazGrande is pretty cool too. I'd like to build my Dad's 2001 Ranger like you did Mom's Spaghetti. I could call it, "Mom's Spaghetti O's..." like o geez what did I get myself into lol! Maybe I could just send it to you for the build!
Nope. I’m here to give you ideas not to build your rigs
@@thedirtheadshed yea I know. I was just kidding lol.
Hacks and tricks by Dave 😂
Hope you are getting something out of the vids
always! nothing but massive respect for your skills. glad to have found your channel @@thedirtheadshed
Glad I live in Texas no real hassles on tires and exhaust our area. Hear some stories about the big cities sweating the fast and furious crowd though.
Yeah. Texas has some definite strong points
You're doing a really good job on these videos, Dave.
Thanks! It’s getting easier too. Heckin stressful on some of the early ones
Mazgrande is such a great rig! I remember I signed up for motortrend just for that build.
I appreciate that
Great job Dave! We can actually hear you this episode!
I’m getting better
👍🏻
You should 3BT swap that.. a baby Cummins would rock in that..
Is that even a thing?
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Now the motor sounds loud and has like a high idle 😊. Anyways, all this time since you’ve talked about that Mazda In woods and in the trails with fab rats I’ve always thought it was just the rear with bags and front with some type of shock that flows with the rear 🤯. I should pay more attention to what it has than how 😎 your trucks are. “Driven by a Toyota powered by Mazda” 🤭 if that made sense…
It idles really high when it’s not warmed up
I have tried to explain the "sound" of welding. Told guys, welder sounds great. And had people look at me like I have 2 heads..lol. if you weld enough, you can hear if the welder is set correctly. Great vid by the way.
Thank you. I had to listen for months before my boss would let me touch the welder
Thanks for showing the whole process! 👍
No sweat. Thanks for watching
Thanks Dave
Thanks for watching
You are making me wish I would hurry up and finish my present project so I can get started on SASing my Mazda B2600. I got the plan all laid out. Axles Etc. Your truck is so cool! :)
Get after it!
,,,,,Long Live The Mazgrande,,,,,, Say hi to Fred……
I will. Thanks
Dave I wouldn't be mad if you had mini truck content.
I need to work on that darn thing
fast
fun&
cheap
(luv it)
Did you see our old solid axle Luv made an appearance on Puddin’s show
Dave, if you want cheap exhaust go to your local muffler shop and ask them if you can dupster dive their scrap bin... i might know of "someone" that used to do that after hours and get some really nice mufflers from a scrap bin...
True that. I used to scrap all kinds of good stuff
Hacks and tips and tricks by Dave! 👍👍
Fun times
The man is giving you the hassle! He's referring to WA state law where as the fender or fender flare has to cover all protruding portions of the tires. Additionally, in WA you must have mudflaps that extend at least to the center of your rims.
It’s so ridiculous
@@thedirtheadshed On the west side of the state law enforcement is a rare sight anymore. I wouldn't advocate for moving over here, but I have yet to have a problem with my XJ. You must live in the land of the bored cop.
I really haven't dealt with cops hassling me much for no mud flaps and tires poking very far out. I live in gold bar but I've also spent lots of time in Seattle and Everett area. I got pulled over and he said my windshield was too broken which was true it's replaced now, but I was very surprised he didn't mention anything else. There was one time I was told I needed mud flaps but I never did and that was many years ago i was also pulled over in Ellensburg for not having covers on kc lights years ago that was strange i think he just wanted to see what i was up to but technically that is a law but ive never had an issue since. I've never been told anything about tires poking or essentially being all the way out and I've daily driven modify 4x4s forever. I did get warned about loud exhaust when I was like 16 or 17 that was 15 years ago. My go to exhaust is always removing the cat and using a Flowmaster 40 series with some simple pipe and a turn down. A single 40 on our 4.0 jeeps and duals on the v8 jeep and truck.
I'm definitely past my straight piped or cherry bomb glass pack days haha.
@1:18 probably the coolest freakin clip on all the internet. Love MazGrande!
If ya got it flaunt it
Its just like hanging out in a friends' shop watching him putter around and build shit.
That’s the goal 🤙
Those methods go hard on that truck! Ill be West later this year, lets get on a video together!
Sounds good. They are good wheels
Good stuff, don’t want the cat too far from the header or it won’t heat up enough and soot up and clog.
Yeah. I know it’s like 30” max…. But then there were those weird 2000 ish 3/4 ton Chevys that had one behind the muffler… way back
love it. thanks for sharing. keep on modding.
They are never done
Sounds like nothing, which is a great sound. :)
Miss running those mufflers. Had to go Magnaflow straight through on my Cherokee because it always bellies on the muffler and I got tired of the rattling from eventually breaking the baffling inside. Straight through makes noise.
yeah. its a trade off. would be cool to get a heavy cased turbo muffler
@@thedirtheadshed LOL: I actually plated one. Still ended up rattling. :)
I thought on tv you are supposed to throw the old exhaust on the ground. Mom’s spaghetti is still my favorite truck!!!
It’s a good one!
The ol' shake test 😂
Every time
It's that or have it rainin' rigs in the shop.
I love this little truck
Me too! Thanks Mark
we cal to jump a big gap with the welder to "dirt hump"
Hahah
Cats quiet exhaust noise a ton. Probably could have kept the “loud” muffler with the cat added.
I’m a fan of quiet 4wheeling rigs anyway though so that sounds great.
Yeah. It’s quieter than I expected
Makes me want to hush my xj some more🤫
Do it!
A 24" 2.5" glass pack would have added some good tone
Agreed
For the catalytic converter to work best, you really do want it as close to the engine as you can to get it up to functioning temperature. Next time.
Got to work with the space I got. Which isn’t much
@@thedirtheadshed dang Mazda’s…
So rad…
Thank you
Wish I had a welder I could do this too. Lol. One day.
Save some $ up
Im a little let down. You didn't do the obligatory open header rev. Everyone has to rev the engine when they hack the exhaust off, i think its a law. 😂 Great video. I just did the same thing for my daughters firebird. I bought the cheapest muffler i could find an used a bunch of scrap pipeit cost fifty dollars an some welding wire and time.
Nice! Good project
Man I’d totally buy a MazGrande shirt.
I need to get on the merchandise
I'd buy one to support this program.
Fast, Fun, and Cheap, sounds like a girl I used to know
Hahah
After watching this video my boys who are 5 and 8 are saying butt weld. They think it so funny. 😂
That’s awesome!
The older I get, the quieter my vehicles get.
Same
Mom’s spaghetti 🍝 is the shiz-nit
It’s good. Keep an eye out for spaghetti wheeling
At the beginning of this video, are you wearing Frieberger brand flip flops. Thanks Dave another good one.
They are Gambler 500 sandals
Dig every you do Dave. Makes me feel like what I’m doing is just fine.. question for you??
Do you not like welding gloves ??
I wear them on bigger projects, but it seems like that’s not very often
SK8-HI'S HELL YEAH! SK8 or DIE
These are ol’skool lows. Too hot for sk8 highs! Vans forever
👍👍
Thanks for watching
Rad rig 🤘🏻
Thank you
Just adding the cat to what you had would have made a big difference in the sound.
You’re right
move your rattler close to where you made your cut .... and it wont sound like a sawed off shot gun , header pipe rattler long tail pipe will reduce da heat .......
Thanks
How goes it Dave love the content u have been putting out!!! U are a big motivation to my love of building and turning wrenches. I was wondering if I could pick your brain, when u and Fred built the yj on 40s and tons did u do anything different to the brake booster?? Thanks again for all the inspiration all the best
Thanks for the support! I believe we left that one stock. My yellow yj is stock booster and master, it stops great
@@thedirtheadshedright on thanks for taking the time to respond 👍
Killer machines! Between the Mazda, the f350 and the jeep, witch one performs the best Offroad?
I’d have to say the Mazda wheels best
Seeing you air out that thing was cool. Most probably would expect that from it.
As someone who has a bag on bar setup also. How do you keep your bags from over extending when it's on the left? I didnt notice and limit straps on it. Are the shocks holding the weight?
The shocks and bags are topped out at the same time.
Thanks for putting a cat back on. They don’t rob power like the older style ones did and especially on a little motor, why not help out Captain Planet.
Yep. I wish I had one with a larger inlet and outlet, but this is fine
How do ya feel about fan interaction? Been a fan along time and live in the same town. Just happened to see ya today driving the mustang. Wanted to say hi and shake your hand but I don’t want to bother or be a weirdo and follow ya lol but just thought it was cool I spotted ya today!
No sweat. Hollar next time
