- Here is my simple 3 step proces to off-camera flash.
In this video I show you how you can make strobist-style photography easy by dividing the process into separate steps.
Step 1: control the ambient light
Step 2: add flash
Step 3: shoot
Check out the work of the amazing 14 year old photographer Cézanie Vandewoestijne: / cezaniev
She's been using my old Fujifilm X-Pro1 for a while and does amazing things with it.
You were the first photographer I've learned ocf from when video tutorials were first available online. Thank you so much for your videos.
Great stuff. Love the dramatic organ music! And the bit about photographers forgetting to photograph!
FINALLY! easy to understand instructions on exposing for the background! Thank you for this tutorial!
this is one of the BEST i've seen... the way you explained what and why was very easy to understand and follow.... THANKS
Thank you so much. This kind of instructional video has been surprisingly hard to find. Really helpful!
Thank you from Ireland, I'm just getting started on off camera flash
That is very good photography lesson for me !I have never used a Flash before but I did get overall idea of using an off-camera flash.
So glad to see you STILL sharing your skills and insight Bert. I found you online years ago back in your Squeeze The Lime Days and still enjoy your teaching methods.
Superb tutorial on off-camera lighting, brilliantly presented. Great teacher with easygoing, enjoyable style and manner. Highly effective approach with 3-step process. Of course, the pretty student and model don't hurt!
You're a fantastic teacher! Very casual, but full of wisdom and experience. 👌🏻
Love your tutorials! Very good instructional video. Thank you very much for the same 👍😎
Great information. Thank you
You're a good educator Bert. Nice video!
Fantastic tutorial. This was pitched just at the right level for me and it really helped me understand the process. More videos like this please Bert!
Thanks, Bert. Found the advice about ambient light very useful and in great English, too.
Thank You Bert , You explain very well and make shooting and using flash easier to understand , Feeling thankful ..
The best on OCF so far. Thanks for this all i need now is practice.
Best explanation I have seen so far. Thank you for making this video! Your steps are a huge help and can't wait to go and shoot this weekend.
Thanks Marvin
Great video thank you for posting really helped a lot
Great vid Bert. You certainly answered a great many questions I have had related to off-camera flash and setting everything up. Your easy and relaxed approach was awesome. Keep up the great work.
That's a nice one, useful to beginners
This is my fav video on flash photography!! thank you so much!
Thanks, Bert! I always enjoy your videos, and I just started trying to learn off-camera flash myself, so this was useful.
Bert, great video. You made it look so easy.
The Fuji looks so tiny on you, Bert :)
I remeber the good ol´ "confession of a photographer" times, where you walk around with your 5D Mark II and the big 70-200L :)
Very USABLE information. Cheers!
Great video!!! Thank you
Great video and information.
Great information! Thanks for sharing!
thx Michelle
informative.. you should try the cactus v6 mark 2 trigger and rf 60x speedlight.. they enable x series cameras to shoot at higher shutter speed..
Thx, I know about the Cactus series but I rarely need high speed sync.
Great Job. Explained an important idea of off camera flash in simplest words. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Pakistan. PS. Love the organ music for infill :-)
Sadaqat Ali bro can i ask you?
Hallo, I`ve found this video randomly. Keep things simple that will help a lot :) I also like the photos and your style seen on your website, very inspirering for me :)
Very clear. Thanks.
great video , thank you Bert
thumbs up for the sound effects! :)
Cool video! Thanks!
Great video, very well explained. My only criticism was the choice of music for transitions - something from Phantom of the Opera?
Yeah the music is a bit creepy to say the least...
Yes ! I’m just few minutes into the video and it scares a sht out of me every time .. I’m listening with my headphones aaagghhrrr otherwise good stuff just change the music please for the next one
the music keeps me awake when I started to sleep
Agreed. Even in 2019, horrible choice for the subject matter.
I like the music. It's better than the same-sounding "porn" music heard on most videos. The scene looks as if it could be some kind of gothic structure.
I liked this a lot! What's interesting is he didn't mention using the aperture to control the flash. Is this something that is optional?
youre the man. man
What is with the Phantom of the Opera music !
Different though !
Perhaps if the model was wearing some period costume.
Great tips
Great location love the organ music very nice touch. Thanks for sharing.
God I remember this stuff was so confusing for me. Now I watch this a year later and its like...yeah, simple. And then after I did figure it out I went thru a period trying to figure out why I couldn't figure it out. Go figure.
looks very cold in there, you really need to start looking at HSS and then you can get outside where it's going to be a bit warmer. Synch speed is fine for indoor and studio, but I think you are missing out by not using HSS
here is one big LIKE for blondie :)
Helpful ideas here. Thank you for sharing. What in-camera light metering mode do you use when working with off camera flash? I use Matrix metering mode, but only because its what I've always used. Do you have any ideas on this?
I don't use any metering at all. The only way to control the image fully is to shoot full manual for both the camera and the flash. Just take test shots and judge the image on the LCD screen. You paid for the camera, so you can choose whatever exposure you like.
you said that you can keep yours settings the spot the umbrella position and for example change your lense but I suppose that if you use the 56mm at f1.2 after the 35mm at f2 you need to change some settings right?
If you change aperture you have to make changes in step 1 and 2 indeed. But if I use the same aperture with a different lens, the light stays the same.
Are you using the umbrella in reverse mode?
What did you look at in the camera in the step 1 to find out correct exposure. Could you please explain a bit about it please.
It just has to look the way I want it to look. So I purely judge on a visual level.
I'm a little confused with the zoom on the flash. One person gave me advice to always set it at 24. Do I want to change it depending on the focal length that I'm at with me lens or how do I decide this without taking too long?
When you use your flash on camera, you usually want to follow the focal length of your lens. For off-camera use, it depend on how wide you want to light beam to be. With modifiers like umbrellas and softboxes, you want to fill the modifier, so generally, the wider the better. With smaller umbrellas you sometimes have to zoom in a bit more (like 28 or 35mm) so you don't get any light spilling past the umbrella. Hope this helps.
When you are setting up the camera for the available light, you set it to 1/250, f2 and ISO 800. Why don't you go down to 1/125 so you can lower your ISO to 400? You are not trying to kill the ambient light, so you aren't gaining anything from such a fast shutter speed.
(I am not that experienced with flash, so feel free to correct me in case of me understanding something wrong)
Theoretically you are right. However there's virtually no difference between iso 400 and 800 on the Fuji. In this case I also wanted to shoot with the 56mm, and for that one I prefer a faster shutter speed than 1/125 because you easily can get blur.
Bert Stephani Yeah, the difference isn't that big because it's just one stop, but having a lower ISO is always nice. I just wanted to know whether my thinking was right or I misunderstood something thank you!
With the 56 I also like to shoot at 1/250 if possible. How I love that lens... :)
Bert Stephani Hi Bert! Thanks for the video. I thought that you used intentionally ISO 800 to keep 400% of dynamic range. Would this be important in this shot?
Great video 👍👍 what lens you’re using please??
XF35mm 1.4 I think
Location? is this in Tervuren at the abandoned orphanage?
"I have a problem with HSS. I have sony SLT A58 camera, Godox AD200 flash, and Godox X1T-s trigger, but still beyond 1/250 sync speed (shutter speed) during bright day light, I am getting dark bands on the face of the photograph. What is the solution. Thanks."
Unfortunately I don't have much knowledge of Sony cameras so I'm afraid I can't help you. HSS has been working without a hitch on my Fujis.
Which speed light and trigger are you using....?
We used Cézanie's kit: Nissan di700A and Air 1 trigger
@6:39 I swear those strands of hair going up is the working of a ghost!
✌️😅
What flash and remote are you using?
This is a Nissin combo, I personally use mainly Godox
Bert Stephani does Nissin work well with Fuji? Great video BTW
It does, but I would go for Godox because they have more options
Sekonic.
Ambient blown out..
This must be Russia... Love the post nuclear apocalypse look
TTL will get you at the correct light power quicker ☝️
If you are lucky it will you in the ballpark quicker indeed but it will rarely be spot on and you have to deal with variations between shots. Which will cost you more time in post production. TTL is good for run and gun photography but I prefer manual in controlled circumstances any time.
Bert Stephani I’ve been using the Xplor600 from Flashpoint and it’s pretty consistent but I’ll pay close attention to make sure that doesn’t happen 👍
40 or 14?????
is she wrong to tell?
plz never use this sound again for the transition! Nice lesson by the way.
She is 20 not 40 😂
