I remember one year I was experiencing dog slow internet connection. I went as far as replacing my wireless router and even upgraded my internet plan to a higher tier, but to no avail. So I called my ISP back and sent a tech to my house. It turns out that the cable wire from their feed to my cable jack was so old and brittle that it was literally falling apart. after the cable was replaced (for free), internet speed was back up and running optimal.

ISPs cleverly use the phrase "up tp" when they try to sell you your service. It is one of the many things they state to excuse them from sending out a technician.

  • @amsimkiss

Good stuff. Also, moving your router to the highest location in your home will also expand your signal. For example, placing my router on my 1st floor provides a signal within the house and onto the driveway. However, mounting the router up high on the 2nd floor provides a signal 2 houses down from mine. Elevation can greatly affect signal distance.
One more thing... If speed is critical to you and you want the most you can get from the service you're paying for, designate specific devices to be connected via Ethernet cable if possible rather than wifi. Ethernet cables will almost always give you a significantly better connection, including higher speeds. Then leave the rest of your devices on WiFi that aren't super critical.

Great stuff as always, Steve. Here's another some will want to consider: like you said, 5g wifi is indeed faster than 2.4g. But if your wifi router offers 5g that's faster on some devices, but your laptop/machine doesn't "see" that 5g option, your speed will be limited. But you can get a button-sized USB 5g adapter for about $15. Made a big difference on an older laptop I had.

I'm reading this article while watching Steve speed test. 😁
      Nearly 1 in 4 Households Don’t Have Internet-and a Quarter Million Still Use Dial-Up
Lack of high-speed internet access is a monumental issue in our country, and the disparity was brought into full focus in 2020. And it’s a problem that’s not going away.
Key findings: Number of US households without internet
27.6 million (22.5%) of US households don’t have home internet.
Over a quarter million (265,331) households use dial-up internet at home.
Utah, Colorado, and California are the most-connected states.
Mississippi, Arkansas, and Alabama are the least-connected states.
To get a clearer picture of the US digital divide, we combed through data from the latest US census survey to pinpoint how our country and individual states are faring when it comes to residents having equal access to high-speed home internet.
22.5% of US households don’t have home internet
What would you do without internet at home? That’s the question 27.6 million households have to answer on a daily basis.
Yes, almost a quarter (22.5%) of US households use public Wi-Fi or other means to hop online-a modern-day travesty considering that more and more of daily life takes place on the internet.
The number of households without internet is greater than the total number of households in 13 states combined, a personally unfathomable amount since I spend a majority of my time online every day and can’t imagine being stuck offline. Without an internet connection, I’d be unemployed and lacking access to educational resources that could improve my employment opportunities.

Step 1 should be never plug your modem/gateway/router into a power bar. These are bus power systems and do not provide the full amount of electricity required for your device to properly function. Especially important for WiFi.
Then, don't forget Channels. Wifi operates like CB Radio. There are channels, frequencies that can be dialed into for transmission and receipt of signals. Set your router/gateway/modern anything that is broadcasting a wifi signal to channels 1, 6 or 11 ONLY (2.4Ghz band). This puts all devices in range into a column and prevents interference.
These are the most common fixes for WiFi speed issues I face as a telecom field technician for one of Canada's largest providers.

Couldn’t help but notice your extraordinary wifi speeds, but at the 15 to 75Mbps indoor WiFi many of us here in the UK get, I can give one unbelievable further tip - a tin foil reflector behind the WiFi hub. When I first heard this - gone in the mists of time - I thought it was a wind-up, but no. Get a rectangle of corrugated cardboard from a packing box, cover it in Aluminum/Aluminium foil (so-called tin foil) and make sure it’s a slight curve/parabolic shape. I think in terms of behind my TV, where my hub lurks, and about 24 inches wide by 12 inches tall seems ok. Place it behind the hub (ours is in a corner of the room), and it helps throw all the signal forwards, like a reflecting lampshade. Astonishingly simple.
This literally reflects the radiated signal the WiFi hub emits, because they seem to spray it in all directions, like a light bulb. One other tip, the speed of WiFi is directly proportional to the strength, the more power you can focus to where you need it, the faster your WiFi data rate will be. Oh, and the 2.4GHz vs 5GHz, yes the 2.4 goes through walls but the 5 basically is only good for the room the signal is being emitted in. I use those mains-distribution things, and often turn off the 5GHz part of the signal. Our home’s 2.4GHz does 35Mbps, and the 5GHz does up to 50Mbps in anywhere but the actual hub room, but we never seem to be able to capitalise on this.
Oh more - the actual USE of the signal, DEGRADES it’s power so much, that a TEST may show such-and-such a speed, but as soon as you use it, or more than one device uses it, the drain of the signal is so much, it can HALVE right away from the test speed! Double-Oh, really last thing, the 2.4GHz interferes with any slightly iffy Bluetooth connections, they are very close in wavelength/frequency. It does, or it doesn’t, depending. Yes, I learned far too much about this, if it had all worked I wouldn’t have had to. No hold on, this might be the really last thing - many of our UK ISPs have a naughty habit of quoting the ‘delivery to your door’ situation. You suggest calling the ISP, but here in the UK, they only promise about 3Mbps in a room (what could anyone do with that - see the power-reduction when using issue above too), and if you have a WiFi going slow, they consider that not necessarily very serious, they will keep telling you the ‘to the door’ speed is a whopping 75Mbits ie bang-on contracted levels.
I think that REALLY is the last thing. We had superfast fiber/fibre, and got rid of it. It was meant to be 300Mbps, but the WiFi hub kept burning out, and I realised that all the extra extenders/mains circuit extenders I was using (right out to the summerhouse/garden) burn out any hubs that are not really well built. What’s really bad, is that the optical fiber company, really depend on their slow WiFi hub, to throttle the customer’s use! So, they don’t want to help you go faster! That’s how they can promise 300Mbps, cos you will NEVER get there. You made great points, I just added my few bits. Thanks, it was useful, I restarted my whole system!

I made notes and I'll try some of these things. I have two computer scientists living in the apartment unit next door to us, and a couple of guys in my Gyro Club are computer experts so I have lots of available support. I've been concerned about unnecessary exposure to EMF. I'm not conspiracy theorist, but I think I that it's a legitimate concern. I use an EMF detector on my iPhone when I'm in new or unusual environments. I was at the Ryerson University public gallery in Toronto, and they must have had a lot of hardware in an adjacent rooms because my EMF meter jumped into the red zone.

the provider was charging me for 100 mbs and i have only 45 like before the upgrade.
he updated the cabel modem and take out a device on the cable for now one can steal the cabel signal.

Just found your channel. I recently upgraded from 100Mbs to 500Mbs. Best I can tell I'm getting less than 100 on my desktop (hardwire) and 25-50 on my laptops. When I complain to my ISP, I get the standard answer, "service is UP TO 500 Mbs". Frustrating to say the least. I didn't really see an improvement when I upgraded to be honest. Also several times a day I will get a message on my laptop. "Internet service restored" I have seen it on my desktop as well, but spend 95% of my time on the laptop. Anyway to document this lapse in service, or request that "Frontier" document my service? Thanks and subbed

My router is connected to the internet service provider by two DSL circuits, with no intervening components. The router (which the service provider calls a "modem") also provides wifi for use by all of our connected devices. I suspect it may also serve as the access point - is that right?

Hello, thanks for this video! I’m searching the net high and low to find out, if Smart Connect is good or bad if one has a lot of 2.4GHz iot / smart home devices (sensors, cameras etc). Currently I have my smart devices on their own 2.4GHz SSID using one of Netgear’s more recent Access Points, the WAX206. I have two additional SSIDs that can either be 2.4GHz, 5GHz or “Both” (dual simultaneous). I only have one of the two currently used in “Both”mode using a different password.
Do you know, if I turn on the 3rd band and name it exactly the same as the second band (and make it “both 2.4+5GHz simultaneous) and select “Smart Connect” (which seems to apply to all three SSIDs, looks like I can’t just have it on for the 2nd two ssids) will the AP open all three bands for access by all devices, potentially causing problems with my smart devices or will it respect the fact that the 2.4GHZ band has its own password and keep those devices separate? I like them separate for security reasons too (that 2.4GHz band has client isolation enabled and access to ethernet port devices and the AP / router GUI disable. Want to find out from someone who really knows what’s going on under the hood before I break dozens of devices! thank you from Los Angeles.

To just use the provider’s built in wireless vs getting a separate Wi-Fi router? Had a tech tell me once that having both causes interference. 🤔 But wouldn’t the majority of Wi-Fi users face this problem as you have to connect it to the provider’s device?

    • @dottotech
      @dottotech  2 года назад +1

Yeah, I don't really buy the "interference" card.

I have HughesNet with built in wifi that flat sucks! HughesNet told me the same thing about interference. But I had tech come to my house that told me the interference is BS. Regardless, what I did was turn off the HughesNet WiFi broadcast and connected my new NETGEAR router that has 6 antennas and 3 different WiFi ‘s 2.4, 5.1, & 5.2. Plus 2 guest WiFi signals as well. My router has a smart system that will pick the best WiFi signal for each of my devices automatically if I choose to use it! So far I’m using the smart system and no problems I’ve found yet. Much better signal with my NETGEAR router over the built in HughesNet WiFi. I get least double the range now, if not more! I believe if your willing to spend the money for a great router the built in WiFi not going to even compare in over all quality to the aftermarket routers!
