NEW Ford Puma ST review: is it worth the extra cash over a Fiesta ST?

Some diehard Ford fans were up in arms when the company announced that the Puma name was being reborn as a compact crossover based on the Fiesta. Back in the 1990s the Puma was a two-door coupe that was admittedly a bit of an oddball but has since attained a cult-like following, particularly the sporty Racing Puma.
But if you were worried the Puma would loose all sporting credibility after its crossover makeover, fear not. Ford has release an ST version of the Puma and it's based on the brilliant Fiesta ST, adopting the same engine and (most) of the performance upgrades under the skin.
However, SUVs are typically less sporty than their hatchback siblings as they're heavier and larger. So does the Puma ST capture the Fiesta's magic?

I was looking for a new sporty car and eventually narrowed my choice to the Fiesta ST and the Puma. I test drove both and ended up with (a bit of a mouthful) a new Puma ST Line Vignale Sport X. A 1.5 turbo ecoboost, full leather interior, heated seats, both front seats with variable massage. Front and rear cameras, keyless. Automatic or tiptronic manual drive. normal, eco, sport, rough terrain or icy conditions settings, self parking etc etc. Very quick, great handling, tramlining and even a heated steering wheel. What more could you ask for ? IMO the Fiesta is a nice hot hatch but my Puma is way better. Add to all that lovely blue metallic paint. The choice was easy for me and I don't regret that choice for a second.

Naturally, a young millennial presenter would go for the lairy fiesta. Because of this, I would not read too much into his conclusions. The puma is the more grown up option, because its aimed at a different market demographic. (yes I am older than the presenter!).
It's probably an age thing, your over 35 audience would be getting the puma all day.
I can appreciate the fiesta would have a more pure drive but not worth the compromise.
Yeh agree. In late 40s and Puma seems a good balance. Ideally I had a warehouse of cars to suite me 😂

I have a lot of fords, the last ones being a focus mk2 ST, focus st mk3.5 and the Kuga 180... for me my puma ST is the best Ford I’ve had.
Yeh had a mk2. Fuel and tyres for the beast. Puma lot more efficient practical nowadays 😀
No adaptive cruise available on the fiesta. I think this should be stated more in reviews. That’s a deal breaker on its own.
Both nice cars, I've got family an like my camping trips an mountain biking an hiking up mountains so I've just ordered the puma st in mean green, beautiful looking car and practical too, personally I prefer the look of the puma st it's cool an quirky an sporty and green the best colour for puma st,closely followed by grey matter colour, was originally going to get the puma st line X in grey matter but after seeing the puma st in green on website an you tube videos just fell in love with it , long wait now be sept/Oct time before it's ready an delivered , brand new one as well can't wait ,great review cheers , greetings from Scotland 🏴👍

Just got myself a fiesta ST as it’s the last of a generation of hot hatches! Who wants a big rolly polly people carrier? The fun has ended!
Is it stiff, Im in my mid 40s and our UK roads are so pitted, any suspension compliance or would it be annoying as a daily?
And what MPG did u get?

Driven the puma.a st the other day I think the pumas steering is a lot lighter and maybe slightly easier to live with

The Puma is 83mm taller.

You haven't learnt the data correctly mr reviewer , the power is the same but the torque not.
Fiesta ST has 290NM and Puma ST has 320NM to compensate the extra weight.
I’ve just traded a 69 plate Fiesta ST in for a new Puma ST and the puma is better in every way. The fiesta is an incredible car but the way they have set the puma up is seriously impressive. I went for the frozen white and it looks like a baby Porsche.
I have a fiesta ST3 and i don't believe it is. It's bigger, taller heavier so...

Why you test the fiësta ST in sport mode (crackle) and the Puma ST in standard?
I'm driving the Puma ST for 1 year now, my worst car ever... Steeringrack problems, paint losing from wheelarches, doors ratteling with little bass with the B&O soundsystem, the thing in the back, constantly fall of, lot of wheelhop, ratteling engine... Sorry but not had much fun in the year..

You can get a Puma in a 7 speed automatic ,i think this chap is more opinion than fact as the Puma has much more front seat headroom ,go do your research before you babble on like Jeremy Clarkson !.

Cater for 2 different markets! Both fantastic cars. Fiesta is far more involving to drive on B roads though !
