  • Hey guys! This will be the first part in our budget stroker build where we cover the disassembly of both the m20b25 and the m20b27. Will does a great job explaining the differences and benefits of the 2.7L stroker build. The correct engine to use and why the stroker build is superior.

    Wow this brings back memories! Back in 1998 I built a stroker with no internet info. Just word of mouth from car clubs. I used a EURO 323i head, drilled and tapped the cam for a cap and rotor, on an ETA bottom end, 2.5 intake. No custom engine management except for custom chips, so I used low ohm injectors from a euro M30 and a custom chip from a popular tuner back in the day. I think it was a Mark D. EAT custom chip. I still have this motor sitting in the back of the garage on an engine stand.... Car was wrecked with only 1000 miles on the setup.... 1BADETA rip

    Thanks for this video!!!! I have had a 2.7 stroker in my shop but gave it away in a trade years ago. I now have a 2.7 block and all the lower end bits. Finally located an 885 head from good friend in Canada that I completely rebuilt. I reused the rods from the eta but swapped in the pistons from the other M20 I had to match up the top profile and not have any valve/piston slap. My complication was I have a M20B20 as the donor for the intake mainfold that is aspirated...that's right: SOLEX 4 bbl carb. Looking forward to parts compatibility, watch to watch for, etc. the Piston Warning is totally worth watching!!!

    I know everyone is asking for part two, and I'm going to be no different. But I'd like to qualify my request by saying, I have a 1986 325e that runs great, but has a wiring harness / sensor issue that has become so frustrating that I bought a 1988 325i just to make a stroker between the two and eliminate the ETA wiring harness. Granted I could look elsewhere for build information, but you made this video so clear and concise that I'm not so patiently waiting for part two.

      I’m gonna have Will comment on this, though my understanding is, super eta & “I” pistons after the production date (which I forgot) are the ones that will work... another option for a ‘low compression’ boost build would be retaining the ‘e’ or 2.7 pistons

    also: about the reuse of the crank bearings: I understand where this is coming from. The cost of the bearings is not the issue. The issue is that the crank bolts are expensive as hell. I'm talking about 9 bucks per bolt. Also, when your buddy measured the taper, he should measure in the other direction (the direction of the rod angle. He did it the other way).

    Your knowledge is incredible. I'm new to the m20 world and have a lot to learn.
    The engine I have is similar idea to your budget build with the block from one, the head etc from another. My block has different water holes and also had the distributor to run the oil pump. It only used it for the oil pump as it had the distributer mounted direct to the cam the same as your. My oil pump distributor has a plug into it so i'm assuming this is to timing or revs?

    Mad levels of info details and real knowledge! Just remembered what I wanted to ask you about the s38b38 when you do that video.
    1) True that the timing chain tensioner from an S50 is an upgrade for the S38B38?
    2) The stock power steering pump in the e34 m5 uses a different liquid (pentosin) which conects to the SLS suspension system - can you use a different PS pump from like an M30 that uses stock PS liquid or you can just plug the holes in the pentosin pump ? Or like make a closed loop for the PS pump? Asking to remove the stock suspension system and get new coilovers without worring about the power steering pump.
    3) Maybe show please how to do a valve adjustment procedure on the S38b38 and the throttle body sync
    4) Is is true that the stock exhaust headers on the s38b38 are made from inconel?
    5) The famous oil question - what would you run on them
    6) Your paypal adress please so I can say thank you with some beers :)

  • @cvaz7623

    guys prior to taking the rods out. a stamp on the bottom of the caps can be done. a simple number stamp or many little marks to number them is fine. Remove one by one and place the cap back on the rod after dissembled. It really helps out to put the same rod into the same cylinder and it could keep the machine shop from scratching their heads. You want as little confusion when taking motors to machine shops cause that'll cost you extra dollars.

    • @cvaz7623
      @cvaz7623 3 года назад

      If there is too much wear in your cylinder you might have to have it bored over and would require new pistons. Have the bore sizes checked first, if boring is required, purchase the over sized pistons first before u have it bored. You want you cylinders honed to the spec required for those pistons and sometimes its best to double check the sizes of the pistons once you get them. If the tolerance is fine, have a simple hone done to give u a cross hatched pattern for oil retention and careful with the sleeves on the pistons, do not use abrasives.

    If you have the 88 eta. The difference between the 2.5 and 2.7 are even smaller. The 88 eta or SETA is damn near a 2.5 with a longer stroke, smaller cam, single springs. I have a SETA with a bimmerhead 885 head(split 280/274 cam, port n polished, HD rocker arms, double valve springs) and a stock bottom end. Because the SETA already has 885 head from the factory the compression ratio does not change when you upgrade.

    Hey Thank you so much for doing this! I've been looking for this exact video for the longest time, I've been subbed to you for months and had no idea you put this out. I'm doing the same build on my 87 325E, but I want to avoid having to get into the block itself. I Was thinking of just swapping the b25 head and electronics over and running a turbo setup, do you think this is feasible or should I really go the extra distance to do the piston swap? I'm thinking of doing an Alpina 2.7 type build with custom Mahle pistons in the future as my mechanic abilities grow but right now I'm not really comfortable getting into piston work. Also I want to do a manual swap since I have the auto trans. I watched your video on it which was very helpful, but I'm curious if it's possible to use the standard b25 g260 and drill out the sensor holes on the bell housing so I don't have to source an eta specific tranny. What are your thoughts on this? thanks again!

    • @DENVERBEERANDOIL
      @DENVERBEERANDOIL  4 года назад +3

      Yes this is essentially how to build your own super ETA on steroids! We didn't use a super ETA as differentiated by the pistons. Super etas have proprietary pistons and intake manifold. I would highly recommend doing this exact build but spending the extra $150 on bearings and arp rod bolts! Hope this helps.

I’m having issues starting it up. :(. Any tips would help! Your vids are really helpful and unique compared to all of these other channels

    Damn. I have an e28 and I was hoping I could just swap a b25 head on along with the electronics, get it running on that, boost it, and go along my merry way. Now I know it goes much deeper than that.

    • @DENVERBEERANDOIL
      @DENVERBEERANDOIL  3 года назад

      If you are going boost, and are ok with leaving the compression low, that is a perfectly good way to go.

      @@DENVERBEERANDOIL How big of a deal is it that the oiling rings on the e28 pistons aren't as good? is it enough to cause reliability issues?

    • @DENVERBEERANDOIL
      @DENVERBEERANDOIL  3 года назад

      @@divingboardlord well additional oiling is always a good idea. Having said that, if you are careful to avoid cylinder wash down, have a good tune, and avoid sustained high RPM (in boost) driving, you should be completely fine. The issue is with the oil control rings and their ability to keep the cylinder lubricated/cool under sustained RPM. This can be combated using the techniques above and possibly some Lucas oil stabilizer to help keep the oil on the rings and cylinder walls

    i know you say dont use the e28 m20b27, but didnt the 88 e28 get the Super eta like the 88 325e? those have an 885 head stock on a 2.7 bottom end with higher comp ratio than the normal 87 and older etas if im not mistaken, one build id like to see/ do is a 2.8 m52 crank in an m20, 135mm rods from the b28 and a set of custom pistons (with a 5mm higher wrist pin) that setup with triple webers still holds the unofficial highest N/A hp for an m20, i think it was 250kw to the wheels... check out morerevsm3's videos

    I have an "885" Head off a M20B25 that I got in a trade deal. The known problem is that the engine was destroyed in a timing belt failure. As you know this will do a job on valves, pistons, cylinder walls, etc. My question is would it be worth trying to salvage this head? Replace guides, seals, and the two valves that "broke" or would you say I have a large aluminum boat anchor? I wouldn't mind being able to save the head and build a stroker but I'm not sure if I should put any money into it as is. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

      I would say take it to a machine shop and see what they think. I would assume you would be somewhere around $600 to get it right and that would be worth it in my opinion.

    Actually the cylinderhead cracks over at the camshaft, it starts at the intakevalve of cylinder 5, its not the overheating that causes the cracks, all those heads tend to crack at sone point but if you are lucky it is still a small crack just at cylinder 5, so it can get welded and it wont crack again. Ive done this multiple times and them motors all still running with no problems, even a 2.8 turbo is still going strong with the welded head.
