This "New Tube" tech is the most interesting thing about these amps. Vox should do a technical demonstration by building a "New Tube" equipped AC30 and comparing it to a "real" AC30. If the difference is miniscule or non existent then we have a game changer in amplifier technology on our hands. If not it's just some gimmicky marketing BS.
and even if it doesn't quite compare, it's still not quite a gimmicky technology because it allows them to put actual tubes in way way way smaller amps
True, it would also be lighter to haul around than the current form. But might also improve the responsiveness/tone of the high end modelling amps like Fractal & Kemper. That is assuming the "New Tube" tech isn't just a marketing gimmick and is an actual technological leap.
I mean we've had the same tube technology in amps for nearly 100 years. If these "New Tubes" are a technological leap for the tube/valve it would behoove the music industry for Vox to build an AC30 using "New Tubes" to prove it's not just a fancy marketing tool and is actual the future.
As a physics student who knows a decent amount about the evolution of technology I really do believe that this is the future of guitar amps... Amp Modeling is limitless yes... And helpful for touring. However I believe that one technology wont overpower the other, it will just be a matter of choice like it is now... Tube, or modeling. Just with much more advanced technology of course. I personally would get both a modeling and a nutube based amp. They both have there uses. Same thing goes for pedals. There will always be analog and digital.
Bought the AC version, party because I have a 4ohm 2×12 cab. I can honestly say, best non full tube amp I have ever heard. Wicked loud at half volume on 50 watt mode through 4 ohm cab. Takes pedals brilliantly-but the grit on board is quite nice. This is not a cheap toy. It's not a 2x12 all tube combo amp, but it is damned close.
I have a little amp called Bluguitar Amp1 and it has some russian military tube of some sort that is the size of a tube of Chapstick and it is rugged as hell and will last damn near forever. It is a 100w head the size of a large pedal and is so packed with features that it still amazes me. That is the way of the future my friends.
It is the best amp I have ever owned. I have a doxen pedals in front of it and it handles them just like a big old fashioned tube amp. That guy is a real genius
I just got one this week (clean version) i can't say how amazed i am with it. Got the clean as prefer to have the choice of running my own choice of drive pedals, but so far i've just been so impressed with the clean tone and the combination of the basic treble, bass and my guitars pickups, tone and volume that i haven't got a pedal nr it yet. plugged into a Backstar artisan 212 with celestion vintage 30 loudspeakers - just ****ing amazing! The tone out of this thing is surreal - treble rolled right back and bit of extra bass and just got that lovely warm boutique kinda sound (yeah i know its not boutique but this is delivering the sound i never expected to achieve on my budget!).
I could totally see someone getting all three of these heads with a few 2x12's and an ABC box for a full rig ... Clean, crunch and lead without using dirt pedals.
Personally, I think Fluff was correct when he said us guitarists are why technology has not really changed much because we know what we like, and we are picky.
The reason why the Clean amo is the most popular is cuz there amps don't have FX loops, so the clean one is the only one with which delays and choruses and reverbs and all the post distortion effects will sound better with it.
You should do a shootout with these, the Orange Micro, and those Hotone mini things ALSO, a more "topgear" version of that would be a "smallest rig challenge" I mean like 3/4 scale guitars, 2ft patch cables, those novelty microstacks that are like 4 inches tall just for the shits and giggles
I have had my fender amp stuff up Twice and my orange once and all at gigs ! Luckily I had one of these as a back up and now I just use my Vox mv as a full time amp ! Super loud reliable and great tone .
Thank you for doing this! None of these are available at my home shops and I really want one but all the demos on RUclips seem to sound different. I trust your guys' demos so this was a great reference
Hi there, excellent review as usual. Here's a suggestion : when you demo "small amps", a valuable info would be to have some kind of measurement of the dbs in the room, just to figure out for us whether you are playing loud, quiet, etc. ? and, more accurately, how loud is the clean headroom for an amp... etc. just to know whether you can actually gig with it or ... ?
I just got one of the MV50 AC amps for my studio. It's amazing and I've already used it in a couple of tracking sessions. I have it running through an old marshall 50watt combo, which the head unit for had blown. Paired with the celestion speaker, this amp really sings.
Dear Rob and Lee, I'm an old (55) road guy . Been out with everyone from Britney Spears to Ozzy. I'm not a musician but I love your videos which are encouraging me to start playing. Anyway congratulations on both of your success and the fairly new baby. Best thing I personally ever did was helping make my kids. Continued good fortune. Daniel Badtrpnmf
These little bastards sound AMAZING! I'm very impressed. Quite honestly, I'm surprised that it's taken the industry so long to come up miniature tubes.
Matt Jones miniature tubes existed back in the 50s and 60s but were killed off by transistors. It is surprising that the idea hasn’t been revived before now.
"To Survive" right in the beginning there. Nice! And the store you guys were talking about is Radio Shack. Also - this amp sounded so much better with the Tele than the PRS that it's unbelievable. At least to me.
Great sound out of the Vox mini heads. I could see these amps being very versatile in a studio situation since it doesn't take 45 minutes to dial in a type of sound you may be looking for in about 5-10 minutes. Plus it carries with it the tried and true vox sound with little effort. I definitely could see studios supplanting how I was
Sort of. Its got 2 or three pre-amp tubes in the pre section and a tube in the power section. There is probably some solid state happening in the Super Lead circuit. They sound great, though.
Got one of the clean amps for all the reasons you mention in this vid. Great little pedal platform, headphone jack for home practice, loud enough as a backup amp to hear yourself on stage and line out for the sound guy/gal if/when your valve amp blows up.
I think that glass tubes will go the way of LP's. Newer technologies will change the industry and what people choose, but everyone will still realize that they (LP's / tubes) have a unique character that CANNOT be replicated.
I'm an electrical engineer (BSEE & MSEE) - basically, the "Nutube" is a common fluorescent display found in clocks and stereos, some cars, and many other places. Yes, it's a real tube - with a much lower plate voltage & designed to be a display. All they did was adapt all the existing machinery that has existed for decades to make this compact tube for audio. Compared to the 12AX7 the transconductance is MUCH lower, the plate voltage (and current) is MUCH lower, the power dissipation is MUCH lower, the gain factor is MUCH lower. Not saying this is necessarily bad for guitar distortion - but as a basic amplifying device on its own - it is deficient. Still though - a cool idea. I'll be buying one as a backup amp.
I have a Vox Cambridge 50 with a nutube and I'm absolutely in love with it. The "double rec" model (i think you can guess what that is emulating) sounds amazing. Sure, you can tell it's not the real deal but it's close enough for my taste just playing at home as a hobby.
Cheers Captain, I just ordered an MV-50 AC and also have an Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro (Ebony) as one of my axes...they're well made and still, I think underrated. Keep up the great work, one of my favorite channels....
These are great little amps. Shame about the price. If they were a bit cheaper I would buy a clean and a dirty and a switch pedal. Only other thing is would have been nice to have an effect loop like the Micro Dark. Great video chaps 😊
i bought the clean as a back up. it takes distortion pedals well and is fast becoming my go to. works fine in my practices and has plenty of volume to keep up with my fairly loud rock band.. love it.. the new tube works on the same principle as an LED, feels very close to a full size tube
Good to see the Epiphone. I like seeing all the high-end guitars too, but where it sometimes chafes is when you're running a car's worth of guitar into budget gear. It's nice to kind of recalibrate the expectations now and then for the audience who's going to buy what's being presented.
I think they should do that more often as well. It's all well and good saying that this £200 guitar sounds excellent when you are running it through £6000 worth of gear but what does it sound like through the type of gear someone looking for a decent guitar in that price range would use.
My goodness that little bit of lead Chappers plays after 4:02 is sublime. And I don't usually subscribe to his more 'shredding' style. Very, very nice with lot's of groove and soul. I thought so in anycase...
What I like is the ac30 plugged in and when you stride over the strings once, clean its just great. This is what all depends on. Saying why should you play it clean is, lets call it, no help.
Finally an IC that sounds okay in place of a valve. Big tone for a ditty thing. Pretty henchworth pengford if you ask me. Although, pretty surprised this is not in the pedal format to be honest, it being so small it could've easily been a more on-the-floor product with clean/dirty switch.
I've had the MV50 AC for about a week and a half now, I absolutely love it. I'm running through a 10" ragin cajun right now, which isn't ideal for the AC sound. I have a Greenback-type speaker on the way, hopefully that gets closer to the traditional AC sound. I do wish they had the attenuator feature on the AC model, the power amp definitely compresses and distorts more when the master is cranked, so I use my Weber Mini Mass with this tiny little amp still lol.
Have you noticed any cutting out? I ran mine into my weber mass lite into the small 8 ohm speaker and it would cut out with the volume set at noon... Per other youtube video apparently vox includes a small slip of paper indicating that the power amp section can go into protection mode and cut out when using 16 ohm speakers...
I have MV50 AC waiting to try Boutique. I put it through a Jensen C12K same as Fender deluxe and hotrod II. Best sound is through Mooer Radar with Celestion Alnico blue IR sounds like ol AC30 then. i compared in the shop using same speaker to AC15 and could not tell the difference in that environment which I was the only person playing. I intend using wet/dry/wet with at least 2 of them and a Laney for drive.
19v fat barrel is typical of several laptop manufactures.( Dell and HP specifically ) Up to about 5ish amps is easily gotten ( around 100-120 watts ). it is the DIN style plug that is harder to get power supplies for as there are several different DIN sizes and pin configs.
I checked out both the MV50 and AC10 at Cranbourne Music a couple of days ago. I know the AC10 is more just over twice the price but it is 10 times the amp. I bought the AC10 and gigged with it last night. It’s awesome in a small venue with my 4 piece band consisting of 2 vocals, drums, bass and keys.
If it had an effects loop, I'd be all over these instead of buying an actual tube amp this winter. They sound pretty damned good! As it is, I may invest in that little 1x8 Vox cabinet these are going into. Not bad at all. The emulated output is the most impressive feature, actually, since if you mounted it to a pedalboard, one of these would make a great preamp into a larger solid state amp like a Fender Frontman 212. Damn you guys for making it more difficult for me to pick an amp!!!
@Tommy712rus Good question! The answer is, because it isn't a pedal. Plugging in effects after it would be like plugging in effects after the power section of any amp. You would likely damage the amp and/or the effects unit. You could plug effects in after the emulated output, but they likely wouldn't sound very good. You're much better off having any effects units placed before the amp, even something like this, unless you have a dedicated effects loop that allows you to place them between the preamp and power amp.
I tried one of these out the other day and I was surprised that I did like it. It sounded better than some of the mid-range Orange amps (when played through an Orange 1x12 cabinet).
I am sure it has been said a couple of times but, "Eco" shuts down the unit after a given amount of time not having input signal from a guitar. Some say 15 minutes, and others say as long as two hours. Either way, it shuts itself down after a period of time.
I have my own little band rehearsal rig: ZT Lunchbox combo amp (rated at 200 watts) and a small custom-made cube (1x12) extension cab. The 6.5 inch speaker along with the 12 inch Celestion give it a big full-range of sound.
I purchased a MV50 Clean. I am running it into a Friedman 1x12 cabinet. I am running a Friedman Brown Eye Pedal - TV HOF mini and a - Duncan Vapor Trails Delay. I purchased it really for curiosity. This damn thing is awesome. I have nice amps, Fender - Supro - Third Power etc.. but this thing is for real.
The guy who edits these videos is pure gold. Never let him go.
I thought Chappers did it himself, but maybe i'm wrong though. I'm only a gerbil. Love the amp.
Rory "Mugsmash" McLean.
I see you guys don't watch the last few seconds
Rory keeps upping his game, it's great!
Earl Sinclair he has a really good channel. He has not posted in a while but his playing style is really cool. Search Rory McClean.

Tone is tone. If you can get the same tone from a small, cheaper package, GO FOR IT!
This vs micro dark vs micro terror vs other mini heads....time for a miniature head shootout!
Blindfolded.
I came here to say this
I know they did micro terror vs the Peavey Piranha. I now have the MV50 AC and a micro dark, so maybe I'll do comparison video when I get a chance...
Chuck's Guitar Geekery I've got the same two amps and did a quick shootout video. won't post the link, might get marked as spam
So which is better ???
I have a little amp called Bluguitar Amp1 and it has some russian military tube of some sort that is the size of a tube of Chapstick and it is rugged as hell and will last damn near forever. Dimebag Dio Kilmister they've done a video on it
Dimebag Dio Kilmister I have Amp1 and the BluBox and also just got the MV50 Clean with the 8 inch cab. Both are great 😎
He bought out a supply of old stuff. Opinions on the sound and feel of it aside, I don't think it is an 'ongoing' technology.
It is the best amp I have ever owned. I have a doxen pedals in front of it and it handles them just like a big old fashioned tube amp. That guy is a real genius
The only thing smaller than that amp right there is my will to live
Hank Hill Nothing a propane tank can't fix, but make sure you fix that boy before you go, somethin just not right with that boy
Isn't everything bigger in texas?
Hank.. you already know what I'm gonna say
what about your urethra? I was under the impression you had a particularly narrow one.
Hank Hill o
Didn't want to like them... Now I want one...
You can't take Chappers or Lee home, Im sorry.
The neck pickup in that Epihone sounds dreamy!! Thanks for using the affordable gear!
I love the sound of VOX Amplifiers more than any others.
oh my Captain, i can't get enough of yer licks, CAN'T GET ENOUGH!
I just got one this week (clean version) i can't say how amazed i am with it. Got the clean as prefer to have the choice of running my own choice of drive pedals, but so far i've just been so impressed with the clean tone and the combination of the basic treble, bass and my guitars pickups, tone and volume that i haven't got a pedal nr it yet. plugged into a Backstar artisan 212 with celestion vintage 30 loudspeakers - just ****ing amazing! kelven1976 takes pedals real well too! I have the same one!!
What do you think of the emulated speaker output? Have you listened to it through headphones?
You guys are my go to for anything I wanted to see reviewed . Always the best reviews. 👌
I could totally see someone getting all three of these heads with a few 2x12's and an ABC box for a full rig ... Clean, crunch and lead without using dirt pedals.
bloody brilliant!
You read my mind.
Personally, I think Fluff was correct when he said us guitarists are why technology has not really changed much because we know what we like, and we are picky.
Well stated.. and I agree with you 100%. The psychology factor definitely plays a part in adopting new technology for guitarist..
Thanks Lee for playing a guitar that alot of us more likely to own (me included!)
The reason why the Clean amo is the most popular is cuz there amps don't have FX loops, so the clean one is the only one with which delays and choruses and reverbs and all the post distortion effects will sound better with it.
Can't believe how good this sounds. Mind blown.
I run this on a 4 X 12 cab and its sounds great.
¿Enough headroom for rehearsal with a heavy-handed drummer?
@@beckhighways watch the PMTUVK video about this amp. you'll get the answer
You should do a shootout with these, the Orange Micro, and those Hotone mini things

The Clean box is seriously impressive. 24:30
I tried the ac at my local music stores. These things are phenomenal. Seriously, try one if you get the chance if you don't believe me
I have had my fender amp stuff up Twice and my orange once and all at gigs !
20:07 Lee's signature lick. Wouldn't be an Anderton's video without it!
Very informative and fun to watch, especially because of the gorgegous editing. Superb job!
eco actually shuts the amp down if it is not used for 15 minutes..
Nice...
I swear every piece of gear I’m looking at you guys have already reviewed, thanks so much keep rockin
I love the sound of those VOX Amps
I just got one of the MV50 AC amps for my studio. It's amazing and I've already used it in a couple of tracking sessions. I have it running through an old marshall 50watt combo, which the head unit for had blown. Paired with the celestion speaker, this amp really sings.
that little vox amp sounds awesome
I effing love the mv50 clean omg its a beast and ridiculously loud on a 4 ohm cab

Matt Jones miniature tubes existed back in the 50s and 60s but were killed off by transistors. It is surprising that the idea hasn’t been revived before now.
19V power supplies are standard for laptops and therefore: cheap
i think the problem that the Captain had is that they use a proprietry plug.
maybe, but i think it is not as proprietary, i bet one standard laptop supply will fit. My Dell looks pretty the same.
just search on amazon.com for 19v power supply ;)
Not a problem. Once the power supply is damaged, just cut off the leads and solder it to any laptop 19v power supply with correct polarity
then hopefully the polarity is the same as MV50s
"To Survive" right in the beginning there. Nice! And the store you guys were talking about is Radio Shack. Also - this amp sounded so much better with the Tele than the PRS that it's unbelievable. At least to me.

New blind test: VOX with Nutube vs regular tube amp such as VOX AC30, Marshall DSL on classic rock gain settings, etc.
As long as it's through the same speaker cab so we can hear the difference between the amps, that'd be great.
Isn't the Marshall DSL a hybrid amp??
Caio Simoneti Yeah, but that would cover all of the different types of "tube" amps though.
No. It's not. It's all valve.
I'm loving the sound of this. Might get one myself
I think that glass tubes will go the way of LP's. Newer technologies will change the industry and what people choose, but everyone will still realize that they (LP's / tubes) have a unique character that CANNOT be replicated.
Vanessa P they need to be able to replicate power tubes before they could truly replace traditional ones.
Definitely a must buy....that clean one is amazing.
I hope they start packing those tubes into Pedals.
There is actually a tube pedal that has a 12ax7 my dude
Electro Harmonix have already done that. Search "electro harmonix tube pedals" on google for info. amazing set of pedals if you ask me.
blackstar also has made some pedals with tubes in them
didn't Marshall do that over 20 years ago as well?
he is talking about the nutube....
I have a Vox Cambridge 50 with a nutube and I'm absolutely in love with it. The "double rec" model (i think you can guess what that is emulating) sounds amazing. Sure, you can tell it's not the real deal but it's close enough for my taste just playing at home as a hobby.
Wow, that sounds a**-kicking! I am a big fan of little amps, Orange Microdark and Blackstar HT1, this sounds as good, amazing!!
The stuff that you guys randomly jam I would buy on an album!!!
Really good amp and I wasn't sure about these amps when I first saw them in the catalog. Now I am sure that they are great amps. Peace, Flood!
i love vox!
I love my MV50 AC. I just need to get a cab now.
Thanks guys....your videos always put me in a good mood
The emulated out sounded pretty solid to me. For easy guitar recordings on my PC for demos or practice, this would hit the spot.
Cheers Captain, I just ordered an MV-50 AC and also have an Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro (Ebony) as one of my axes...they're well made and still, I think underrated. Keep up the great work, one of my favorite channels....
was waiting for Chappers and Cap10 say on this. now I'm considering. looks and sounds rocking. Thanks guys. cheers and God bless
Always interesting and a bloody good laugh. Well done chaps.
True that :)
"there was an amplifier - that was in danger ....of being crushed by a dwarf "
I love the way the nu tubes glow
Ok. Those little things sound amazing.
These are great little amps. Shame about the price. If they were a bit cheaper I would buy a clean and a dirty and a switch pedal.
Only other thing is would have been nice to have an effect loop like the Micro Dark.
Great video chaps 😊
I've said it before and I say it again.... The editor of these videos is a fkn genious =)
I guess the updated mini head shootout won't be complete unless you include the joyo bantamps.
i bought the clean as a back up. it takes distortion pedals well and is fast becoming my go to. works fine in my practices and has plenty of volume to keep up with my fairly loud rock band.. love it.. the new tube works on the same principle as an LED, feels very close to a full size tube
just bought this! unbelievable!
Strat +Clean+OD= A W E S O M E!!!
They should hook up the clean one to the Diezel VH4 pedal and see how it sounds!
Damn! What's with the capt! Seriously! WTF! He gets better with his playing with, at least, every passing video. Always a pleasure to hear .
This thing is pretty bad ass. I work at guitar center. We plugged it into a 2x15 Bassman cab and it sounded great.
OMG I bought an PRS Archon because of that tune you two play at the beginning, but when Vanilla Arse came out I had to go. Love you guys.
I've been waiting for this video! Nice job guys. Bought the AC one a couple weeks ago. Awesome unit!
Seems like a GREAT option for future episodes of Sound Like
outstanding demo really enjoyed this one
My goodness that little bit of lead Chappers plays after 4:02 is sublime. And I don't usually subscribe to his more 'shredding' style. Very, very nice with lot's of groove and soul. I thought so in anycase...
Mini amps are going to be glorious and expand music in the next 5 years. Reason why vox is my fav amp makers. Over fender or marshall.
I thought the Chappers and Cap'n videos had moved to the official Anderton's RUclips channel?
Thijs de Jong isn't it only in a month or two
he said next month. they record these a week or two in advance.
Thanks for the explanation!
these channels are all the same dude
I totally can see why the clean is so popular. It's a solid sound platform for pedals.
Emulated Output sound GREAT!
What I like is the ac30 plugged in and when you stride over the strings once, clean its just great. This is what all depends on. Saying why should you play it clean is, lets call it, no help.
That Epiphone Lee has really does sound sweet a number of times in this video. An affordable pairing that has some truly great tones in there.
in reference to the 19V AC power supply. Not a problem. 19V is a very common laptop AC adapter. Can get them cheaply all over.
I just had to sit through a two minute ad I've seen before to get to a video that's essentially an advertisement! No skip ad option came up!
I just hope as the years have gone by, that you have been able to put this tragedy behind you. Stay strong.
I would love to hear a freidman be-od through the clean one.
Will Ehrendreich it kills I am running that exact thing!
kebotrans hell yeah! That's awesome.
Watch Henning's video of this thing. Does exactly that.
oh my, that ice, ice baby part was golden.
Coming up from Orange, the Micro Terror 2, with groundbreaking Nutube technology! Now available with a watch strap!
I've got the MV0 AC as well and running it through a Jensen 12" Alnico. sounds great.
This sounds freakin' amazing.
Wal-Mart was a tiny Mom and Pop shop, that did extremely well, and are now taking over the entire general shopping world.
Why don't just plug effects after this pedal?..
Lee playing an epiphone? what is this?
Oisin McPhillips He's probably trying to market them. It's kinda funny though. He's got a Custom Shop Les Paul, and he's playing an Epiphone.
those epi plus tops with the pro buckers are actually a killer piece of gear.i mean their no custom gibson but still not a bad guitar.
Andrew Panuccio I had exactly that guitar and it was not bad at all
I just thought I should play something a bit more affordable for a change!

I still love big tube amps. But dang that MV50 looks sexy as hell.
How about a shoot-out between the MV50s and the BluGuitar AMP1?
ROB! I love your Videos Man! I just wish Chapman would have more dealers in the Philippines
Yeah, you can only play a Chapman in ONE city in Poland, pretty inconvenient.
I am sure it has been said a couple of times but, "Eco" shuts down the unit after a given amount of time not having input signal from a guitar. Some say 15 minutes, and others say as long as two hours. Either way, it shuts itself down after a period of time.
I have my own little band rehearsal rig:
ZT Lunchbox combo amp (rated at 200 watts) and a small custom-made cube (1x12) extension cab.
