After going into a kind of self imposed ice-snow-winter hibernation , the ragaparichayam classes from Shruthilayadeeptham have warmed up for helping music lovers . This class is really a "mahath" one and is full of "mahaneeya gaana" muhurthaams. Towards the end we find that our mind starts dancing like a narthaki. This video opens our view into the lands of a group of similar looking ragas.
Thanks for your defferent Video classes. Thank you for classes.
In my comments posted earlier I failed to mention the wonderful support and singing by Shruthi. The valachi pieces were outstanding.. Congratulations Shruthee, albiet late.. I had not heard these Lathaji songs in Valachi. Usually ,Salil Da employs his compositions in different languages. For example, "manasa myne varoo" in the Malayalam movie "Chemmeen" is born out of a Bengali song ,sung by Dasettan. Similarly have you come across the other language counterpart of "Kaadaaru Maasam Naadaaru Maasam"?
After watching the video I thought of asking Deepu the following questions. What is the general feel or mood of this group of ragas? I feel it as something like high energy romantic bhavam that is embodied in this group. "Kaadaaru masam naadaaru maasam" ,lyrics wise bears a philosophical look of optimism through out the song . The second question is as follows. This group has also neighbouring ragas. I was wondering about what would have been the raga if the anthara gandharam of valachi is replaced by the Kharaharapriya gandharam. I remember one of Deepu's classes where in Deepu maintains that lower gandhaara can portray sadness or bhakthi. I would like to know the name of the raga which we get when the gandharam of Valachi is replaced by ga2. Then the third question.. In a movie called Lottery ticket there is a song "Kaavya narthakee chilampoli chaarthiya malayude" I feel that song falls into one of the ragas in this group..Right?
Thank you for this deep, detailed comment. I think I will agree with you on the general mood of this Raga. I should have touched upon that aspect in the lecture but missed it. Onto the second question about changing the gandhara to G2 in Mahati, that will be a nice Raga I think. Let me try to attempt a small raga aalapana, or a kriti in that new Raga. I don't know if we have a raga like that now. A really good question. The third question is about Kavya Narthaki. Yes I believe that also falls into the Harikamboji/Narthaki mix. It’s safer to say that it has a small element of Valachi and bigger elements of Narthaki and Harikamboji. A very nice observation too. What do you think of the lyrics “Kavya Narthaki” ? Is the song tuned in Narthaki style purposely to match the lyrics? I never thought about it that way until you asked me this question.
Dear Rajendran sir and Deepak sir, I don't think there is a ragam with S G2 P N2 S, S N2 P G2 S. But the scale with the change from G3 to G2 has a lot of promise. I look forward to listening to Deepak sir's alapana and krithi in the new ragam. With your kind permission, I would like to call it Rajendram. I wish you all a very Happy New Year. Best Regards, Jayram
@@JayramSataluri Dear Jayaram Sir, Through Deepu, Thank you so much for visiting Shruthilayadeeptham and commenting about the 'Mahati' video which Deepu had done magnificently. Deepu introduces the ragas in a very unconventional way by cutting a path into classical music through the wilderness of film songs. Film songs are not so easy to sing (quite contrary to the opinion of many a conventionally brought up classical music singer) because of several constraints on film songs. Even BMK respects film music and he says any song of any genre that lasts for long is classical. I have not done any research into the heavy and large volumes of conventional classical music. There can be many many ragas and many many kritis in them. How many of them are popular and remain in circulation? I can guess as follows.. There might be new kritis born everyday but only to die a death in infancy itself. In festival grounds and elsewhere, singers sing new kritis ,some of them, their own brain children and some others, those of their gurus and friends. Though they are styled perfectly and fit into every notion of "classicalism" , I don't know if they really deserve the status of being classical... But Thyagaraja kritis and the likes have stood the test of time. Some BMK kritis are very much around. As long as the original BMK song which can't be sung as brilliantly as He has done, people are afraid and don't sing them now. But the kritis are great and can match with any of the best of their kind. I feel encouraged by your comments and might scribble some Sanskrit lines (if Gods allow) which Deepu might musicalise and sing. But the name of the ragam might not be the one which you suggested. If it bears your name or Deepu's ,it is fine.. Thank you Sir... By the by, today I heard the Sangeethakalanithi concert on 23rd Dec 1978. Great...great ... great...Hindolam and Kaliani ,only "He" can sing like that... That must have been one of the best days of Deekshithar in the Heavens..enjoying the visual of a human being down at Chennai caressing and caring the song on Kamakshi..which he left here for us to enjoy.
Dear Rajendran sir, Thanks for the response and I agree with you 100%. There is an existing Ragam called Jayaram which is a janya of Harikambhoji. A: S R2 G3 M1 P D2 N2 S Av: S N2 D2 P M1 G3 S It beats me why no one renders this ragam, because it's very easy to sing it. The reason why I have called the 4 note ragam with G2 "Rajendram" is because you are the inspiration for it. This ragam is closely aligned with Suddha Dhanyasi. One has to be very careful not to sing M1 in Rajendram. And it has great potential. I hope to hear that krithi you and Deepak sir create soon! Best,
