In 1963, my father and I travelled to Lincoln, Nebraska to watch the Nebraska-Kansas football game. We were seated in the south end zone where Kansas had the ball on their own one foot line. Sayers took a pitch around the left side of their offensive line and scampered 99.6 years for a TD. That is still in the books as the longest run from scrimmage in Big 8 conference history. I can remember it to this day.
I remember seeing the play in person in 1963 sitting in the west stadium with my Dad. I was in 9th grade in Kearney, Nebraska.... Sayers (Omaha Central) had the high school long jump record in Nebraska for many years at 24' 10 1/2".
@@whodidit99 That went to Kent McCloughan of Broken Bow a class B school. McCloughan had a good season in football and set state sprint records but Sayers should have won. I think Sayers thought it was because he was black and McCloughan white and part of the reason he went to Kansas rather than Nebraska.

RIH (Run in Heaven) Gale. Thank you for all the thrills and inspiration.
My uncle was his full back. RIP Armand Baughman
Even though Gale Sayers garners an inordinate amount of respect for having had such a short NFL career, I still feel like he's underrated.
could do it all on the football field and in life

Are you any relation to Toby?
Are you related to Scott?
Yet he didn't win high school player of the year.
