I believe you can get rid of tether distance by going into the command thing and typing "playersonly" it will freeze the games dinos in place, but then you can type it again and it should get rid of tether distance, but i havent tried it on ASA yet, but on ark survival evolved it worked!
Read some comments on its steam page, some say if you make a dedicated server you won't have any tethering, but the regular single player will have it, hope this helps 😁👍🏻
Had a close call with my save being reset but I used the cloud sync, what else? Yeah sometimes you can't loot your body but going to first person helps sometime, haven't noticed anything major so far
So one of the settings on single player mode is that you can activate PVE so maybe try going into single player doing the split screen thing and then changing the setting to turn on PVE maybe that will help maybe not I don't know how it works I just noticed it in the settings give it a whirl

Can the second player customise thier character before entering or are they locked with a random generated character?

Does it run smoothly? I used to play Ark Suvival Evolved split screen on xbox one, but it sucked.

They should have added NPCs. Not seeing a need to buy this where nothing changes

The second player is tethered to you tho, so they can't wander off too far 😅
