      Hey Caleb, I’ve been into surround sound and home theater since before there was even a such thing as surround sound receivers. Back then we bought out board surround processors and hooked them up to stereo amps.
      I remember back in the late 80s there were high end boutique audio shops all over the place where I live in NY. Since then all of them have closed and we have a few Best Buy stores that have magnolia showrooms but even that stuff isn’t as esoteric as the older stores. I have kept my system from basic old surround in the 80s to 5.1.4 atmos now. I do not know anybody in my life that has a home theater system. I’ve met other enthusiasts online but I don’t know anybody who has a home theater. Most people I know could care a less about sound. That being said I don’t think home theaters are going anywhere soon. I was 17 when I started this hobby and I’m 50 now. I’ve had laserdisc, supervhs, vhs, dvd, Blu-ray, and ultra 4K Blu-ray and I hope to see a couple more formats before I shuffle off this mortal coil.

    The Adjust 3D Audio Profile has nothing to do with intensity. Each option is a HRTF profile that the user should select based on which one sounds best to them. It essentially adjusts the level of how high or low 3D audio sounds relative to ear level

    For audio format, you want to leave it to Linear PCM no matter the type of soundbar or speaker setup you have when it comes to video games. However, when watching a blu ray there’s a separate settings menu in which you’d want to switch the format to bitstream. HDTVTest made a video explaining this.

      This is true in theory, but it only really applies if you have an Atmos setup. If you just have a 2.1 or 5.1 (or even a standard 7.1) setup, the best you'd get from bitstream is Dolby TrueHD or the DTS equivalent and those are, theoretically, audibly identical to a PCM stream. On the other hand, sometimes TrueHD has dialog normalization applied, so some might find that better and others might find it worse (though it is objectively different from the studio master). Perhaps more importantly, TVs like the LG C9 (and probably C8 and CX) have an audible lag when using bitstream from an HDMI source, so your audio will be about a second behind your video when using Dolby in particular. In that sense, it's arguably worse to use bitstream if a) you have an LG OLED TV and b) you're not using Atmos or DTS:X anyway.

      @@Nunya.Bidness I can’t remember the exact link or article but I do remember reading directly from a game dev that linear PCM was the best setting to use for video games as their audio passthrough works different compared to what you’d be getting out of say a 4K UHD Blu Ray movie. I’d say just try out both and see which one sounds better to you with my experience being Linear PCM being much louder and more clear in games

You can choose Dolby in the PS5 settings but then you have to deal with compressed and delayed audio as the PS5 is converting LPCM to Dolby.

    One thing that irks me on the speaker positioning with 7.1 is it doesn't let you designate the rear surrounds as tops instead. I haven't noticed an issue because of it so far, but theoretically you'd get sound that's supposed to reflect something behind you instead coming from overhead if you have a 5.2.1 setup. I can't decide if it's better to go with that, or just select the 5.1 option and let it ignore the top speakers entirely.

    Hi Caleb, and thanks for the good video. I have a TCL R635, PS5, Vizio M 5.1, and Arctis Steel series wireless. All good, however sometimes when I play the sound will stop in my headphones and go to the controller or TV soundbar, then after a minute or so, comes back to the headphones. Its maddening! LOL. I will double check all my settings again and cable routing. I believe its all the same as how you did it. If you or a fellow user have any insights they would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the good work and come on 1M!

      If you’re using the usb 3.0 ports on the back for your steelseries usb transmitter, try moving it to the front usb 2.0 port instead. There are know issues with the steelseries headsets and 3.0 ports transmitting too much heat to them. I’ve move the receiver to the front 2.0 port and haven’t had the issue re-occur ever since.

    **For anyone confused on what audio settings to use**
    Credit to TZGamer from Reddit:
    Here you got the answer from a Naughty Dog Dev: The LPCM options will always sound better than DD or DTS options, because the audio doesn't have to be transcoded into another compressed format. The game internally stores audio in a variety of compressed formats (**bleep**, MP3), decompresses it as sounds are synthesized and mixed, and then has to recompress the final result if DD or DTS is selected. If LPCM is selected, that last lossy recompresssion step doesn't have to happen.
    If you don't have HDMI, LPCM output is limited to 2 channels over the optical output, so you're better off sticking with DTS and DD, in that order (DTS is less lossy than DD). In fact, if you leave the output format setting on 'default', the game will do this for you; the best mode possible is always selected automatically based on the audio settings you've enabled in the PS3 OS XMB.
    While this answer is 11 years old it is still up-to-date. Another aspect: Even PS5 only allows DTS and Dolby Digital for Games. Which means that you will be limited to 5.1 while PCM supports up to 7.1 channels.
    Edit: Before someone confuses this with Blu-Rays: For Blu-Rays you always want to select Bitstream. But for that you do not want to select DTS/Dolby Digital in the system settings either. While watching a Blu-Ray on PS4/PS5 you have to use another settings menu that allows you to select "Bitstream". You can open that menu while watching a BluRay only.

      Yeah, that all sounds correct. Also, something not really to do with system level sound settings, but I feel it is also worth noting, in many games in which there is a setting to toggle between large or small dynamic range, people generally want to choose small. Large seems like a better choice just from wording, but for those that have subs, small is the ideal choice as it will allow the sub to take all the low end sounds and the other speakers to take care of the rest. If you have headphones or have no sub, that's when large should be selected. If you select large when you have a sub, the low end sounds will also be taxing the other speakers, so your sub isn't doing its full job.

    • @clownmagma
      @clownmagma 3 года назад

      7.1 surround can be achieved with just a normal 3.5mm headphone jack if you have the actual headphones capable of it. THX Spatial is different though, you'd need Razer Synapse 3 which is only on Windows 10 PCs. So, if you're console only, 7.1 surround is very much possible with headsets like the Razer Blackshark V2. But you can't utilize the THX Spatial on those unless you also have a PC.

    • @ik4659
      @ik4659 3 года назад

      I have a similar situation as you and I didn't have to change any of the default options on the PS5. My PS5 is directly plugged into my Yamaha RX-V685. When the receiver is off, Audio/video Passthrough of the AVR takes over and the PS5 goes to 2 channel stereo for the TV. When I turn on the AVR, the PS5 switches to 7.1. So there is an "auto-detect" going on behind the scenes.
      I am in a situation where I love the surround sound, but others in the house feel it's "too loud" (even though I don't crank it in the least). I am also the only gamer in the house, so about 75% of the time my PS5 gets is for video streaming.
      That being said, the true intended sound for PS5 is actually the 3D Audio via headset. It's a shame Sony didn't leverage Atmos or DTS:X for games when NOT using headphones. Thank goodness for Microsoft supporting Atmos/DTS:X for games and apps!
      Sony is working on 3D Audio through TV speakers - the engineers are expanding the "sweet spot" to get 3D Audio via TV speakers before Sony releases the feature. After 3D Audio via TV Speakers is figured out, Sony then said it would work on getting 3D Audio via home theater systems. I guess Sony just wants to reinvent the wheel instead of use what already exists.

    Do not use Dolby or DTS for games if you have a soundbar or AV receiver (that support PCM 5 channel) !! PS5 audio is LPCM by default because it renders it in real time, Dolby and DTS is added after and compresses the audio.

    I can confirm, undeniably, that using Dolby (I haven't tried DTS yet) for games gives you slight audio delay over LPCM.
    My setup is 5.1.2 Klipsch Reference speakers -> Denon AVR-X1600H -> LG OLED C9 (via eARC)
    The PS5 HDMI goes straight to LG C9, and the C9 carries the sound via eARC back to the Denon AV receiver.
    My test was in DOOM Eternal (PS5 version). The very first few minutes of the game has the exact same dialogue coming out, at the same time, from both the controller speaker and the Main Speakers.
    With Dolby, the controller speaker came slighly ahead of the main speakers, and also, let's say, firing the shotgun showed a tiiiny sound delay.
    With LPCM (still surround 5.1 on my system), ZERO delay between the dialogue that I mentioned, and everything seems to be in sync.
    Shame, because it did seem that the overall surround and sound quality xperience was more pleasant and immersive in Dolby :(
    Might be a placebo effect, though.
    In Dolby, my Denon was even "upscaling" the surround to the Atmos elevation speakers.
    But...long story short, for gaming, I don't recommend sacrificing audii sync over Dolby, it's not quite worth it because of the delay.
    LPCM is the way to go.
    For movies, using Bitstream in the Movie Player's settings.
