I absolutely love 747s. In the 1990's during the Kai Tak years, I traveled SEA-HKG-SEA on NW, AA, and UA. All were on 747s and on the upper deck. Where international carriers are concerned, it was my fortune to experience AF (SEA-CDG), BA (SEA-LHR), KE (HNL-ICN), KL (SEA-AMS), LH (SEA-FRA), and NW (SEA-NRT) on 747s and on the upper deck.
[As a side note, I am most confident Kai Tak was an airport you would have appreciated.]

(dig the atmospheric beats at the beginning and the end - like neat bookends) seat 1K on a 747 no less despite definitely being outdated but in a good way (i'm paraphrasing lol) the frayed rubber liner on the tray was slightly painful and the PC monitor cracked me up too, the lights look like they're channeling kubrick's space odyssey. i felt for you when you stared at that 1030am cardiac inducing beef pasta but im sure it was all very tasty; the IFE was 100% twilight zone and the cabin design had dominant notes of star trek tng #mostdef 1.5hr tho : (hope you'll get chance on a longer leg in a retro-fitted lufthansa!) oh man that insane snafu at PVG 😭i do admire your resolve and positive attitude - onwards and #upwards always look forward every sunday for your latest #aventure #747hunter

I'm lucky to have flown many 747s - KLM (AMS - BKK - SYD) KLM (SYD - MEL - BKK - AMS), Tower Air (NWK - SFO), ANZ (AKL - LAX), Virgin (LHR - SFO many times), BA (SFO - LHR) - mostly economy and a couple of premium economys. All fab - back in the old days 80s and 90s - no one got air rage, no one got offended and it was generally a good natured and pleasant way to travel. Today the A380 takes the torch from the 747 - a surpremely comfortable, quiet, powerful giant. Not a looker but better passenger UX. Thanks for sharing - sorry you missed the return flight - that must have been really frustrating - especailly when the plane was delayed

My experience with the 747 began in 1977 with a 6th grade field trip to SFO to visit a Pan Am 747. I was able to sit in the pilots seat and I couldn't believe the size of the aircraft. I remember the aircraft had a flight engineers station, so it had to be an original -100 variant, or possibly a -200 variant. That was my first time to ever be on any aircraft. I've been completely enamored with the queen ever since that field trip some 46 years ago. When I was about your age in the late 1980s, I had the chance to fly on several of them, always in coach (economy) , twice on military charters which were taking me to and from an overseas deployment to Okinawa, then twice between Tokyo and SFO on Northwest Orient 747 and then once on a United domestic flight between SFO and IAD. I also had opportunity to fly on the Lockheed L-1011 during that period and that was a noisy, squeaky plane that made a ton of odd noises, but still a great airplane also. It truly will be a sad, sad day when the last one retires from passenger service. It's still #1 on my bucket list to fly 747 upper deck and row 1. I'm so happy for you that you got to experience that! ICN is one of my favorite airports, what a cool experience for you.

Hey, I'm happy for you as well, Patrick. Glad you got to have more 747 experience. My first international flight was on Aer Lingus (Economy) from BOS via SNN to DUB. One of my favorite aircrafts, but my very first flight ever was the previous flight to the Aer Lingus connection and that was on American Airlines from ORD to BOS on a 767. I fell in love with the 767 for a less crowded feel on board. I think it's the narrowest wide-body passenger aircraft. (Over the years I was able to fly 747s on BA ORD-LHR in Economy; UA SFO-DEN in the Main Cabin; Sabena Belgian Airlines (SN) ORD-BRU in Economy; Northwest Airlines DTW-PEK Business Class westbound/First Class eastbound; KLM ORD-AMS Business Class in the upper deck 3x and once in the nose. The airlines I flew most often didn't have the 747 in their fleet like AA and DL (back then). I hated flying on the DC-10 and the MD-11. I did get to fly on an Airbus A-300 once (MIA-SJO) and an A-310 on ME (MEA) FRA-BEY. By far the bulk of the long haul flights I had been on were on the 767 (AA, DL, SU, SK, LO, MA, CO. Oh, and another excellent video: 9.887

When I visited Asia and Europe back in 2013, 2016 and 2017 I pretty much drowned in 747-400's with Korean, KLM and Delta, including a 5th Freedom flight MNL-NRT (I was a SkyTeam fanboy back then LOL!). My goals now is to catch a Lufthansa one and of course, this Asiana one.

Flew across the Pacific Ocean on B747-400s Cathay Pacific and Philippine Airlines. In my brothers going to PVD/BOS Brown University and Father they went KE & NW pre merger with DL JFK-MNL on SkyTeam Alliance flights in January 2009. They disliked the NW B747-451 economy class due missing PTV screens as seen on the KE Version. 15-20 years ago both Asiana and Korean Air sent B747-400s to SFO & JFK in the morning from ICN. My favorite operator of B747-400 is Cathay Pacific due to it having the better seat/service which had a BE Aerospace MiniPod seat in Business class than PR B747-400 that used to fly from Manila to San Francisco/LAX old configuration with Recliner seats drop down screens. Regarding South Koreans KE/OZ Jumbo jet operations to USA from ICN B747-8 is used to ATL/JFK formerly SFO. If I had the chance Patrick from JFK to MNL I'll take the Korean Air Jumbo jet and PW4090/GE90 B777 over a PR B777-300/er A350-900. IFE Wise Asiana just like Korean Air carries Kdrama K-pop on the system.

It was a couple hundred bucks for that last minute ticket since it was a short enough flight with only one other business class passenger booked. 28:42, Really? The Asiana airlines check in counter close 1 hour, before departure. If your transiting in China, go to immigration arrivals, even though your transiting, go to departure, go through immigration and security and then your in the airside.

Typically yes, but they were only allowing air New Zealand passengers through the transit area in Shanghai

Really? That's weird. I think they didn't know or the Chinese airport staff didn't know that your flying to Shanghai for transit and then take the same plane back to Seoul. Korean and Chinese passengers go to Shanghai for tourist vacation and your the only exception.

Not only you, but, what is the fetish of logo embossed silverware?

@PatrickSheaAviation It just occurred to me. As in hotels, logo embossed bathing accessories prevent misappropriation.

I’m old so have logged more 747 flights than I can remember. Continental, KLM, United, even Tower Air, a short-lived JFK-based discount carrier that operated only 747s. Fortunately, I was seated on the upper deck for the majority of my flights. The 100/200s had the difficult-to-climb spiral staircase and an extremely intimate upper cabin. Even with just a handful of rows, they still were outfitted with two lavs upstairs. My most memorable flight was probably AMS-JNB on KLM -400 in the early 2000s. They still had recliner sleeper seats without any shell or foot cubbies, meaning the pitch was 60” or more. Enough that the seat stretched four or five windows when fully reclined. As we finished up lunch, the Sahara loomed below with just red sand as far as you could see. It was fascinating but kind of boring after a few minutes so I closed the shades and watched a feature film. Two hours later, opened the shades and still nothing but red sand horizon to horizon. Really brought home the scale of Africa. A final memorable 747 encounter wasn’t an actual flight but getting to walk around one of the NASA Shuttle Carrier 747s with Enterprise on top during a public event at the Johnson Space Center near Houston.
