The translation that you read is quite poor. The song "El Rey" / "The King", is of someone who no matter how he is doing in life, he has supreme confidence on himself and quite a big ego. The lyrics meaning this by stating "With money or without money, I always get my way, and my word is final". It follows with "I know that I'm outside (not in your home/heart?), but the day that I die, I know you'll cry. You'll say that you didn't love, but you will be sorrowful, and that's how you'll stay", and it summarizes it all with "I may not have a throne or a queen, or no one to understand me/follow me, but I'm still the King". That's the reason for Vicente Fernandez's posture throughout the song. He is interpreting this overconfident character, of course, using his overpowering voice and showing off by pulling the micro away from him gives more credit to his interpretation, and intertwines the character and the interpreter's personalities. Doing less than this wouldn't match the song''s lyrics.
BTW, by all accounts, Vicente Fernandez has usually been characterized as a very down-to-earth and humble person. He used to allow his fans to tour his ranch/house in the western part of Mexico and even receiving them personally.

Hola Rebecca! He's one of the best singers in the "Ranchera" or "Mariachi" music in Mexico.. And something you mentioned about how he is portraying emotions while singing... that I can say is one of the main keys to perform this music.. You have to show a lot of emotions to sing as it should be.. thanks for the video and see you in the next one!!

    • @jvillanueva2978

not just that but this song is about unabashed machismo so he has to act it as well. Using a mix of power poses resembling Spanish matadors and 19th century vaqueros. Body language is just as important in Mariachi and Ranchera as the voice. (luckily for us Mexicans we have a rich history of some fantastic world class singers) If anyone is interested in more artists: Jose Alfredo Jimenez, Pedro Infante, Jorge Negrete, Lola Beltran (for sure Dona Lola is you want to hear a vocal powerhouse), and Pepe Aguilar are some of my favorites.

So true! I have been seeing a lot of these reaction vids of our music by English speakers. Whether it's Juan Gabriel, Julio Jaramillo, Rocío Durcal, José José, ángela Carrasco, or hell, even Maná, they always remark on the emotion in it. I always chuckle to myself when it happens. Honestly, God as my witness, if they don't sing with that passion and emotion, they don't get anywhere with us. That goes for all Spanish music. The Italians and the Brazilians get it which is why their cross over music hits hard with us for years. (Our artists do it too with their pop scene.) Everybody knows Roberto Carlos, Laura Pausini Jose Augusto and Eros Ramasoti. A lot of the Americans don't get it which is why their crossover music only hits for a season with us.

My best attempt of lyrics translation:
"I'm well aware I'm outside now, but in the day I'll die... I know you'll have to cry.. (cry & cry x2 ). You might say you never loved me, but you're still gonna be so sad.. & you'll have to remain that way.
Either with money or without it, I always do as I please, & my word is law!
I have neither throne nor Queen, & nobody who understands me ... but I still remain King!
A stone in my path , taught me my destiny was .. to keep rolling & rolling (rolling & rolling x2). Afterwards, a Muleteer advised me.. that the most important thing is NOt to come first, but to know how to get there... "
    (repeat previous verses)
    End.

Hi Rebecca, The Legendary Icon was Incredible on his Vocal Ability. I had the Honor of seeing him in the Early 70's at the age 5/6 My first Concert/Live Performance ever. The mariachi was about 20+ strong and when I seen him at such a Young Age. I was shocked on his Vocal Range and how He Positioned the Microphone almost by his Stomach. Incredible Talent Vicente Had.
RIP Vicente " Chente " Fernandez Gomez .. Thanks for the Video .. DjStevie

Girl, the fact that you don’t have a reaction video for his son Alejandro Fernandez is grounds for immediate cancellation of your channel (kidding). But his son is definitely a better singer and such a powerhouse. Ask Beyoncé, Marc Anthony, Placido Domingo and others about him. He’s a BEAST! Check out his cover of the song “Granada” live.

The powerful posture is partly because of the lyrics. The song is about him (whoever the singer is) as a very proud and confident man... the kign. It can be seen in the cockish smile, the lift of the eyebrow, the flirty gestures to the audience (camera). Men, and women (we just change rey for reina), love to sing to this with a drink in hand to give ourwelves a little bit of an ego boost and to feel good about who we are and where we stand. Gotta Love that song!! ❤
