Hi there, and many thanks for tuning in! If you feel my videos over time, has added great value, savings, awareness and safety to your travels or plans, then feel free to help me out down here, to afford producing more of such content, by making a donation, many thanks in advance from Mr.T!! - You can donate through the following link: educatedtraveler.info/
As a N American who has moved to Latin America, bought a business, operated that business at a profit, improved etc. and then sold my interest after three years of operation I just wanted to endorse this video. I've also been an stupid twitt at times and payed the price for my laziness or arrogance so I'm not perfect. The most realistic, honest, unrehearsed interviews I've seen in this type of video. Thanks for being a great honest education provider. Now let me add that starting a new business anywhere in Latin America is quite a job and it will take you months to get the doors open and be in full throw....buy an existing business will be rife with pitfalls and lies by all parties except you because you an honest foreigner, the rich white gringo, the walking ATM as they will call you behind your back. Don't be too offended just understand that lies are the norm in such a business transaction. I cannot cover the entire subject but if you have never bought and owned a business before...anywhere! then be especially careful to take your time and read, education yourself, investigate, ask questions of everyone, plead ignorance, tell them you're stupid, beg for info, swallow your pride or they will swallow your money because your pride prevented you from being extensive and detailed enough in your inquiries, read more, research, sleep on it and repeat all the previous about 10 times over six months before you get serious. I mean it. Time is on your side. It's easy to verify a business's current sales claims...buy yourself a comfortable folding chair, and an umbrella to stay out of sun or rain and sit every day from business open to business close , for 30 days, & watch how many customers enter and leave the business and guess how much they bought....do it for 30 days of watching. It's not 'rocket surgery' but it is common sense which is not so common. [It's really hard for a business to fake sales, aka rig the game in real life vs. its incredible easy to write a figure on an an accounting log and say Voila! Sales!] Face it, verifying sales and investigating pre-existing encumbrances are two of our biggest gray areas. DON"T RUSH into pulling your cash out of your pocket and giving it to someone else. Listen, I've done it and learned the hard way. You 've got to learn to do biz like the locals...cheap and cheaper.....the locals treat money like its super-glued to their hands. Please remember that a business in Latin America will probably NEVER produce sales/income anything like a N American or European biz.... my rule is that if you had two identical convenience stores, one in the DR in a great location and one in the USA in an equal location you will never sell more than 25% in the DR store in equal $'s that you will in the USA store. Latin America is on a scale of about 25% of N America in real world opportunities and yield.. Be realistic. Stated another way...if you can make $4K a month in N America selling sodas then you can barely make $1k a month in the DR selling sodas. NOTE" if a business has been on the market and has not sold to a local after months then what does that tell you? Price too high? or is it simple that the locals know that the biz is total cr_p! Never pay the asking price! It's probably worth a lot less, no one in Latin America sells a small business that makes good profits... never!... they're are just hoping a 'walking Gringo ATM', comes by and pays their price. Good luck.
Hi Pal, Many thanks for your compliments, for watching and for your helpful comments! It's healthy for any "dreamer" to read what you just added, as it's so easy to get burnt down here. Thanks again! Brgds Mr.T
funny I read this comment now, as I just came from there - yes Matt runs a great restaurant and is a super nice guy. Palmeras is a nice olace to stay very close to the action and beaches. Thanks for watching and commenting! Brgds Mr.T
Mr T, that was a very very nice and informative video you just shared. It has a very rich content for prospective immigrants from the West that hope to set up shop or work there. I am one of such. Thanks a lot for this video. Also, i loved the very short videos in between interviews where you did various jobs😁. That was very creative and funny. Love from Switzerland!
Hi Alex and many thanks for your kind compliments - very happy you liked the content! - if you're planning to come to the North Coast then feel free to reach out again when you're here, and I'll be happy to meet up and discuss what contacts or help you might need to get started here. Thanks for watching and happy travels ahead - Brgds Mr.T
Another home run video! I love the mango polishing "job" but not so much for the "massage" :) ! That must pay very well :) See you soon enough, big bro!
Hi Scott - Thanks heaps for your compliment! yes I better not give up my day job to take up rubber hammer massage, yet the guy actually said it did his neck & shoulders some good :) Hope to see you down here soon - Brgds Mr.T
Mr. T, what the heck are you doing? Great video for foreigners certainly nice to be forewarned. Also like the video concept how you put yourself in the occupations. Highly recommend the channel you nailed it.
Thank you for this video, I like some of the ideas you shared about businesses needed I am a diaspora planing to move back to Haiti, I am sure That I could use one or two of them.
This is the most informative video I've ever watched on the D.R. Even though you were focused on Sousa/Cabarete area, it was very informative and still have some things that can be applied on a broader scale. Now towards the end of the video, you offer some business ideas, are these more specific to the North D.R. particularly Sousa/Cabarete of most of the D.R.? Thanks for such an enjoyable video and it was my third video of your channel that I'm watching. I will be contacting you soon ...
Hi Randy, many thanks for watching and for your kind comments about the video. In regards to the list of various types of businesses that could be opened here, these should be applicable anywhere in DR, yet some might be better suited for tourist areas. If you are planning to relocate here and thinking of opening a business, then with a small investment in my "Relocation Advisory Service", I'm sure I can help save you a lot of troubles and money by discussing the best strategy for how to go about it all avoiding a lot of the typical pitfalls many have fallen in down here. Just e-mail me at info@educatedtraveler.info and we can arrange something if you're keen, thanks. Brgds Mr.T
so much respect of all those people starting a legit business in the dr. especially thanks to matt sharing his knowledge and his struggles. i wish all of them the very best. i hope i will come there too in the very close future.
Thanks for the compliment and feedback. Sometimes I just manage to persuade people to stand still for a few moments for quick on camera comments, so it's not always possible to plan, set up and execute with the best gear I have - often it's just pull out the device and shoot before he/she gets camera shy. Again thanks for watching! Brgds Mr.T
Super video again.👍👍👍👉 Mick where VERY Good. Next .....how do the Island look aftner the horricane ? Because, Many People's from EU. Hold back right now, no hollidays in DR. They having some worries. So They Will Go to otter places , Lene Hertz, DK
Hi Lene! Many thanks for your great compliment :) Everything is back to normal, from sunshine to power and for the most all mess and fallen tree's have been cleaned up - so to all Europeans, come on over! Out of all Islands, DR was probably the least affected, and with the destruction on the smaller Islands, there might end up being an additional influx of tourists to here, the hotels are ready anyway :) Take care and thanks again for watching! Brgds Mr.T
I was a guest reporter in my friends video recently - channel "Kiskeys Life" and he put together a short video on how the various areas of DR got affected - enjoy! ruclips.net/video/VtHSP_26Rt0/видео.html
Great Video...thanks for filling us in on the many services and businesses needed. Mr. T. As a Dominican born and American Naturalized Citizen...I am so very grateful for your demonstrated love and care of our lovely Dominican Republic. Your promotional videos to the American and European people is introducing the Dominican Republic in a way never seen before. You introduce its beauty, lovely climate, people, beaches, country side...how it really is...no frills! Great Job!! Your videos will bring much needed new energy and blood, with the hopes that many of the expats will eventually become citizens of DR, and exhort influence in the government processes and structures that keep it economically stagnant. I don't understand why Dominican business and Real Estate laws have to be so draconian. Why does it have to take such a long time to realized a business transaction or establish a business...that will bring in local jobs!? I don't understand! Things would be so different and profitable for the Dominican people if only they would make the process of establishing national / international business and the sales of Real Estate a lot easier...instead they have an army of useless lawyers that siphon economic life out off the DR.
Thanks again for complimenting, watching and commenting! I believe that the only way things are going to improve in Government or big business here, is if the pressures from "outside" (other Governments or businesses) are so big that DR won't get paid or sell certain products, unless they live up to certain terms and international standards. Everything here is measured by "what do we need to do to get paid", and even with small deals here, one learns quickly to only pay as things get delivered to satisfaction, where if one places too much trust in the "honor system", that's when you're let down or receive much less than what was originally agreed too. Brgds Mr.T
Great educational videos. I've been there a couple of times and I fell in love. Hope one day I can retire down there. I'm just curious. Where are you originally from? Irish or australian?
Love this video thank you!! I am at dreaming stage only right now and I am in the air conditioning and refrigeration industry and would love to start a business in DR. My main concern is what kind of process is it for obtaining parts and equipment what is the average markup on supplies I should expect that are imported to DR compared to obtaining in a parts house in US? Would HVAC/R training be welcomed by locals looking to get into the trade? Any comments greatly appreciated. Thank you🙏🙏
Hi there! Many thanks for watching and I'm glad you loved my video! That's a number of questions and I'm sure you have many more, so I suggest you email me at info@educatedtraveler.info, then I'll be happy to send you my price plan for my consulting services, cheers! Brgds Mr.T
I married a Dominican girl and have been there several times we plan on moving there in a few years. One thing I will warn people about that place is that the exposure to the sun is much more dangerous. I have lived in Texas my whole life, the Dominican sun is on another level. I never wear sunscreen in Texas but there you really need it. They even allow their cars to have limo tent on the front windshield. It's a beautiful country but the people need to have more respect for it, there is a lot of trash.
Very good video and very informative, great job Mr. T. If I have a question, do you think real estate or income property (apartment building) would be best to start with? thank you.
Hi Allan and thanks for watching! I could give you an answer, but I would rather have the opportunity to give you all the pro's and con's of each one, And based on your question, I assume you're planning too, or already have moved here, but either way you probably have many more questions, so I would suggest you hire me for at least one consulting session to be able to make much better and informed decisions. Send me an e-mail to info@educatedtraveler.info and I'll be happy to forward you my price plan, many thanks. Brgds Mr.T
Hi Mr. T. I have one serious question. I live and work in Europe in one poor country in Serbia. My interest is auto-electronics and I have 15 years of experience in my business. A year ago I invested in DR. I bought a nice apartment in Punta Cana and rent it to tourists. I like DR and I would like to hear your opinion about what do you think, can I succeed with excellent knowledge of autoelectronics and could I decently live in Punta Cana if I start my job. Thanks...
Hi Drazen! Punta Cana has a lot more cash circulating in society than what's up at the North coast. And because it's a specialized trade, you should do just fine - especially if you can keep it to just a "one man" business. Irregardless of what business you start here, usually the complications start when you take on staff, as often they will behave in the beginning, but often screw over the owner at their 1st chance. This is because the laws and justice is heavily lent towards the DR employee's. In regards to the pro's and con's of living here, well maybe check out my next video coming up, which focuses on exactly that. There are many countries out there, where both tourists, expats and investors are much more respected and appreciated than here. I'm just voicing my view point based on my experiences, but it's all up to you of-course :) Hope that helps - Brgds Mr.T
Mr. T. Thank you very much for the quick reply. My idea is to stay in business with just one employee, not from DR but to have a business partner who has been working with me for meny years in Serbia. I was thinking of buying a piece of land and installing an medium size service to provide auto-electronics and vehicle diagnostics as well as in my country. It's very hard to earn money in Serbia, although it does not matter to me. I can't stand the winter and political system in my country that make the people stupid and on the edge of poverty. My country is also a third world country, so I'm not new to having to do hard business. I do not like Europe anymore because of climate, and I do not like European laws that put a lot of pressure on people's free living. That's what disturbs me and why I have hard earned money invested in DR. Thank you for your videos...it helps me a lot. Send me info about your new video...by..
I would like to ask something else by the way ... for the past half a year, I have taken classes of Spanish and I have reached the basic low level of conversation. I am planning only for a year and a half to take a more serious move in DR. In the meantime, I plan to go at least two times to go to my apartment so I do't hurry .My question is whether the knowledge of Spanish must be fluence or basic, because I can not say that learning is good for me...hahaha..
Hi Drazen! It's amazing how we find ways to communicate what we need and want when we have to, so don't worry just learn at least 1 or 2 new words per day, and suddenly you speak it pretty good. A lot of the single folks seem to learn it fast as they hook up with a local, but that's not a must just to learn the language fast of-course, but it helps. In tourist areas like Punta Cana and the North Coast, a lot of the Dominicans speak basic to great English so that should help as well. By the way, if you are interested in my consulting service "Relocation Advisory Service" then I can forward you my price plan which have different options from short term (one hour Skype call) to 1 year e-mail options. Simply advise me of your e-mail and I'll send it to you, cheers! Brgds Mr.T
Thanks for your compliments. I hope you have subscribed so you are informed about new releases coming up. I left a comment to your other comment as well.
I had one, but I seemed to have more "wind disturbance than with my new mic with wind sock. Wind - Light and noise are the greatest enemy's of filming (especially when you try to interview people spontaneously). Thanks for your feed-back - have fun in Jamaica! Brgds Mr.T
Hi there! Should last a while if you can establish an affordable lifestyle. There's a call center in Sosua - reach out again when you're down here and I'll try to get you connected to the owner. Brgds Mr.T
Hi Franklin. Please write me an e-mail and include where you're from? where you're traveling to? when you're coming here? Are you Dominican? So by e-mail, let's see what we can arrange, Brgds Mr.T
not sure of any specific sites, but you can try to Google the local schools like "Isla Academy" - "The International School" - "Garden Kids" or "Luis Hess" - Brgds Mr.T
some stupid rule by the authorities to ensure they don't have STD's, yet thousands of ladies come in and out of Sosua to meet guys, none of them get's checked. In other words, just another government scam to harass and extort the business owners $$$

Brgds Mr.T

Work on getting a lapel mic for your interviews
I had one, but I seemed to have more "wind disturbance than with my new mic with wind sock. Wind - Light and noise are the greatest enemy's of filming (especially when you try to interview people spontaneously). Thanks for your feed-back - have fun in Jamaica! Brgds Mr.T

Hi there! Should last a while if you can establish an affordable lifestyle. There's a call center in Sosua - reach out again when you're down here and I'll try to get you connected to the owner. Brgds Mr.T
Educated Traveler cool I do have a associate degree too. I will be staying by puerto plata

Hi Franklin. Please write me an e-mail and include where you're from? where you're traveling to? when you're coming here? Are you Dominican? So by e-mail, let's see what we can arrange, Brgds Mr.T
What are the online sites to get the english teaching jobs
not sure of any specific sites, but you can try to Google the local schools like "Isla Academy" - "The International School" - "Garden Kids" or "Luis Hess" - Brgds Mr.T
7:56 cmon man lmao
Why must the workers get a blood test?
some stupid rule by the authorities to ensure they don't have STD's, yet thousands of ladies come in and out of Sosua to meet guys, none of them get's checked. In other words, just another government scam to harass and extort the business owners $$$
Blood test?
Please formulate your question fully, cheers!
Excellent video
Many thanks! Brgds Mr.T
