Tesla Model X - Watch This Before You Buy It! Is It Worth It?

  • Tesla just reduced the price of the Tesla Model X significantly, and it has a lot of people asking themselves if they should pull the trigger. This most recent price reduction means that the Model X now qualifies for the EV Tax Credit of up to $7,500.
Tesla lowered the price of the Long Range Model X to $79,990, making it $10 under the cap for the EV tax credit of up to $7,500. In addition, Tesla also made all paint colors included in the price. So, as long as you order the basic configuration, with any paint color, you will be purchasing a car that is eligible for the full tax credit.
This effectively makes the Model X $72,490 after tax credit. At this significantly lower price than previously possible, there are a lot of things to consider. First, the car can only be ordered in the 5 seat configuration. You cannot order the Model X in 6 or 7 seat configuration, nor can you retrofit a third row in a Model X. So make sure you can get by with the standard 5 seat setup.
The next thing you are probably thinking about is if it is worth upgrading from the Model Y to the Model X. The Model X is faster, tows more, has more storage, has more space for passengers, charges faster, has a bigger screen, almost twice as many speakers, second screen in the back for streaming while driving, air suspension, cooled front seats, and on and on. The list of added features and capabilities is long. The price difference between the Model Y and Model X is now down to $29,500 when comparing the Model Y LR AWD.
Those added features are really nice, but they also come with some baggage. For instance, the Falcon Wing Doors on the rear of the Model X are iconic, and complicated. These doors use to be the weak point in the Model X and plagued with issues. Although they are better today than they used to be, they are still a complicated door and are prone to issues.
Like all other HW4 vehicles, some of the driver assistance features are not active. Further, the removal of a number of ultrasonic sensors has made other features of the Model X not properly function, including the automatic doors on the front of the car. The front 2 doors cannot open all the way automatically because the vision only system cannot determine how far away obstacles are yet. This means there is a lot of resistance when opening the doors.
Other features not working properly are the inability to toggle information on the heads up display in front of the steering wheel. You also cannot see much of the efficiency data that is easily displayed on the Model Y and Model 3. Another thing that is an issue is that you cannot split music and streaming. So you can either listen to a movie on the back screen or the radio, but not both.
In the end, it's a bigger, more comfortable, faster, better charging smoother riding SUV. It does come at a larger price tag, and will come with more issues in reliability, but can offer an amazing driving experience. It will be hard to overcome the value and reliability of the Model Y, so if you can afford it, it may be worth seriously considering to enjoy the various features exclusive to the Model X.

Excellent, informative video, thanks! Swapped our Model Y for an Ultra Red X. Got a $1000 referral discount, $7500 Federal, $5000 Colorado, bringing price down (before destination fee and taxes) to $66,490! Another difference I noted from our Model Y is the seat is 3/4" wider between the bolsters - just enough to make them much more comfortable for me.

@@Trust_but_Verify Actually, I meant referral discount as I posted, not a loyalty bonus. I didn't realize the referral discount fine print says for first time buyers. The manager at my local dealership helped me complete the purchase in the app. I gave him the referral link I got from a friend, and he plugged it in, and it took $1000 off my purchase price. He never said anything about first time buyer only. Perhaps Tesla will audit this and remove the credit - hope not.
Traded in 2023 Y with 9k. Didn't play with speakers much, so not able to provide a good comparison between the Y and X. My Y sounded fantastic, and I expect the X to be even better.

It’s important to note that if you own a business model X does qualify for section 179, and bonus depreciation as well. Also under the EV tax credit rules for businesses, there is no cap on how much the vehicle cost, so you could load up a model X, title it under your business and get the full $7500 credit.😊

Business is not a C-corp, but a pass thru entity (LLC, S-corp, Sole proprietor) you are
      Limited by all the same
Rules as the 30D tax credit. You’re thinking you can take the commercial EV tax credit-and you cannot unless you’re a rental car company or a dealership leasing your vehicle-along those lines. Doing so will earn me $3,750 and $7,500 in EV tax credits, plus the profit earned from the Rivian sale. I could use the six-seat config, but I can work with a 5-seat config. Definitely choosing Ultra Red!

Not new but new to my wife and I. Just bought a 2016 Model X one owner and no accidents. The previous owner kept it in impeccable condition and left us with every upgrade possible from auto pilot, premium connectivity, etc. The Captain chairs don't look like they were even sat in. They look new. My wife was not a Tesla fan before we bought it but is now. (Thank you babe for keeping an open mind. Usually once her mind is set that's it. Phew)
While the miles per charge in the real world is disappointing for doing errands, picking kids up from school and her 12 mile commute to work, it's great.
Dipping our toes into the electric world as this is our first. Might look at buying new next time. Actually I know we will.

S/X have never been a $90-100 K vehicle, but people were willing to pay it. I always thought they were more in the $75-85 but I didn’t think they would get the X under the $80 k tax cap. Now that they have I’m in. Ordered Red / 5 seater so I get the credit! I tried the Ford MME and it’s not a bad first swing from Ford, but it’s not a Tesla. Can’t wait! Great takes on this video! The biggest thing for somebody who was considering a Y before needs to think about is can you afford X's repair costs after the 4 year warranty. If you're leasing or dumping it after 4 years this isn't an issue. If you have 1 headlamp and 1 air suspension bladder fail you're looking at close to $10K in repairs. I'm dealing with a SRS error been going on 5 months back and forth and SRS warranty is 5 years. I might have to lemon the car if Tesla doesn't get their act together for finding the issue after 6 visits. If this was out of warranty the diagnostic labor would have been over $1.5K for 1 problem. The Y is a lot easier to live with after the 4 year mark.

Really great video. I got my Model X 10 weeks ago, so missed out on the savings. At the time I was happy with the savings I did get, so I'm just adopting a "game of chance" attitude when it comes to Tesla pricing. I love the car, but was disappointed by the missing three months FSD when I got it, and the front doors that only barely open on automatic. I have been playing with the FSD since it arrived a few days ago and find it too unreliable, especially when it tries to turn into oncoming traffic or ignores stop signs. That is just too much excitement for someone 76 years old. The comfortable ride, falcon wing doors, cooled seats, fantastic sound system, two extra screens and Hardware 4 potential are features I really like.

No, they were removed a bit before we took delivery. Those sensors were only used for proximity for parking as well, I believe, not for how far front doors will open when u push the button. Falcon doors DEFINITELY have sonic sensors and will prevent the doors from opening fully with a low hanging tree above, for example.

THEY WONT DELIVER ANY MXs ORDERED NOW BEFORE OCTOBER!!! it’s worth $12K, and Tesla doesn’t want to tell you! I got the runaround to several people/departments. Even the website said I could maybe get it in September, thus qualifying for the FSD transfer under Tesla’s rules. This just seems unethical and deceitful, no? The price cuts have been in effect less than 3 business days. I love Tesla, but this is just wrong, they should honor the date the order is placed NOT THE DELIVERY DATE DETERMINED BY TESLA FOR $12K

I have to admit, I'd never heard of your channel before today and wasn't even considering a Tesla until yesterday. I saw an automotive news overreport that the Model X had been reduced over $41K since January, and that piqued my interest. Wound up driving 100 miles to a Tesla dealer, taking a test drive, and ordering one on the spot. Yes, I did indeed order it with the Ultra Red. I wish I could have ordered a different interior color and/or swap out the wheel for the yoke, but alas, I was unwilling to forfeit the tax rebate. The advisor was kind enough to tell me about a possible referral discount if I knew anyone who already had a Tesla. My son and his wife do, and they immediately sent the referral. Win-win!
I'm a bit confused about the sales tax aspect of the tax credit. Since I ordered the car yesterday and will very likely finalize the purchase before the end of the year, will the tax credit effectively retroactively reduce the price of the car, meaning I should get a refund of the sales tax on that amount? Of course, that is assuming I qualify for the tax credit in every other way.
Regardless, thank you for such an honest and detailed review of the pluses and minuses of buying a Model X now. I'm sure your video has done a lot of people a lot of good.

If you take the delivery before the end of 2023, you will have to claim your $7500 tax credit when you file your tax return in 2024. You will get the the tax credit only to the extent to your tax liability. So to get the full $7500 you will have to have at least $7500 total tax liability. There is a income limit of $150k for single filer, $225k for hoh, $300k for a couple. If you use TaxAct or TurboTax or something similar, it will generate a required form to claim your EV tax credit when you answer “yes” to a question “did you purchase an EV in 2023” and provide required information. If you use a tax accountant, make sure to tell them you bought an EV.

    • @777CaptMark

Thanks. I’d love to save the sales tax on that $7500, which you apparently can do after January 1, 2024. However, I see 2 possible problems with waiting till then to try to make this happen. First, the tax credit could be changed or cancelled at any time. Second, Elon could raise the price back up at any time as well, which would disqualify it for the tax credit anyway.

    • @BeardedTeslaGuy

What was it about the rows bro? You could select all seating configs with all the discounts at the moment on Tesla's site.

the discounted price yes, but once your MSRP goes over $80k, like selecting any option, then you no longer qualify for the $7,500 tax credit.

I mean is there such a thing as a base tesla? The different tri levels are basically just speed increases. All teslas trim of the same model have the same features. The only options are the autopilot and cometic color.

Agreed, kind of the wrong term as it comes with an image that doesn’t match what a Tesla is

The model X is like double the price of the model Y in Europe for me, because of some limitations. I'm still probably going to go with the Model X as it fits my family much better.

When you first got the Model X, I told you that you would be sad and mad about it, but you brushed me off. Now you finally get it, and your disappointment can not be hidden. Will I get an apology?

    • @BeardedTeslaGuy
      @BeardedTeslaGuy  Год назад +1

No you won’t get an apology because anyone buying a new technology this early that doesn’t understand prices will continue to go down is kidding themselves. This is the price of early adoption

Just ordered a tax credit Model X in cyber red to replace a 2015 Model X. Went to the Pittsburgh Tesla dealership to test drive the model X and model Y, they were great hosts. I would equate it to comparing the Toyota RAV4 with a BMW 5 series SUV. If you want the sublime experience, the model X is now a great value and you're going to have to put up with a little extra BS, just like getting the BMW over Toyota.

Super interested in one of these but let's get real, If your spending 80,000 on a vehicle you probably need to be making near that income cap of 300k. Hard to judge if you have a highly weighted income of bonus/k1 distributions could blow that out of the water easily and unexpected loss of the credit. I guess thats a good problem to have. I am real tempted as we've been talking about getting one for a while. Appreciate all your updates

Agreed your average X buyer likely won’t qualify due to income but there will certainly be some who can swing it who fall under the cap

If you have. no dependents/debt and make 110k-150k. It seems reasonable that you could afford this yourself.

    • @sethssd
      @sethssd Год назад

@InfamousBlackGuy could afford it... but really your car shouldn't be 70% of your annual income unless you save up at pay cash. Really car cost shouldn't be more than 10-20% of your income

I rarely comment but thanks for providing an honest assessment. I took delivery of a MYP a week ago coming from an MDX. Yes, I miss the extra space, electronic suspension and ventilated seats but it's forced me to downsize and only have the essential items I need for a vehicle. I really was ogling the X but I can say I'm satisfied with my choice, even with the recent price cuts.

Nobody is mentioning that you can transfer FSD until the end of the month. Just pulled the trigger because of this + the federal rebate.

I hope it works out for you. my deal may be off… Because Tesla will not transfer FSD from my model Y to the model X I want to buy. They avoided telling me for over a day, and I got a major run around. They seem to be insisting that you take DELIVERY before October… But Tesla determines the delivery date and now says they won’t deliver before then… Despite what the website said. This is a major conflict of interest, as Tesla has a $12K incentive to delay everybody’s order. LAME!

Fortunately it was part of the purchase process in the app. I was surprised that app asked if I wanted to transfer on the same screen it asked if I was trading in. I picked no trade in and yes transfer from 2019 which was listed by VIN right there

Double the insurance over your Y? My insurance went down when we upgraded from our Y to an X. Our Y was a performance model though and our new X is a standard long range one.
