Why wasn't CANIBUS A Top 5 Lyricist Of All Time? What Happened? Stunted Growth Music

- Canibus was most remembered for his battle style rhymes and his classic diss track toward LL cool J that many claim to be a top 5 diss track of all time. This was early in Canibus’s mainstream career and led to great expectations for the MC, as many also thought his career would end with him being one of the best rappers of all time. At least from the east coast. In the 90s, hip hop music was a lot more hardcore as they say, and almost every rapper seemed to benefit from looking, acting and writing rhymes that were aggressive and gave off the impressions they were the toughest of the bunch. Canibus fit right into this mold. Canibus’s style was a hard as they came on tracks with his usual lines about defeating other rappers on wax and them not being as skilled as him, so they shouldn’t bother to compete. He also had songs like "I honor you", that touched on broken trust in relationships and the importance of choosing the right one. Or tracks like "Negronometry" that bounced around many topics that made you think about the state of the world at the time. But it was also tracks like this that made some think his subject weren’t well thought out and by the end of the song you leave feeling like that was a good idea, but what is he talking about. Subject matter aside, there’s no doubt in his prime, canibus was lyrically and skill wise one of the dopest rappers of his generation. He had a tall ceiling and high expectations in the era of the “hard core” artist, but most feel as though he dropped the ball in a few places and fell well short of those expectations. Here are 3 reasons why. Why wasn't CANIBUS A Top 5 Lyricist Of All Time? What Happened? Stunted Growth Music

I believe Wyclef was the wrong producer to collab with as far as his career is concerned. Maybe someone like Pete Rock or DJ Premier would've been in the ballpark for what Canibus needed. I also remember that it was rumored that Canibus was somewhat difficult to work with. I remember reading that Premier and Canibus had clashed at one point and time . Who knows. Growing up I do know that Canibus was a dangerous MC. Canibus is an intelligent MC . His IQ and vocabulary was off the charts and stayed with quotables.
That Diz battle clip is one of lowest points I ever saw a rapper fall to. It's like watching a superhero die right in front of you.

That's not a simple fault. That's a major flaw that is pretty much unprecedented in that industry.

@@lyricsanonymous9036 Lol make all the excuses you want bro. Ever heard of Cadillac Ron (rip) mans shot up heroin in the middle of a battle and still had his round together.
Canibus choked. End of story. Buy his records if you wanna support him so bad because your spin tactics don't work here.
The feud between him and LL wasn't a "stunted growth", it was actually his springboard to stardom. Having Wyclef as a producer was his first "stunted growth".
Big facts! Some many cats got put on to Canibus from that beef. But he had some of the worst beats ever!!!
I thought that was so stupid for him to link up with Wyclef just didnt make sense
Definitely agree
@@jazo204 it did initially because wyclef produced "2nd round knockout"
Naw it stunted his growth because the springboard was short lived and LL likely killed any contacts he had to move correctly in the industry. LL knew one good diss would never stop him. Hov ate LL alive in front of people in the 80's and it didn't matter. LL killed canibus' entire career and thanked him on his next album to twist the knife.
Canibus, Kurupt, Rass Kas and Killah Priest were a group called the Four Horseman. They have a cut called “Horsementality” they all spazzed on it and deserves rotation. Should’ve been a single imo.

I cried when he pulled out the notepad vs Diz....still one of the illest alive
Sad when it happen. That battle was over afterwards. Dizaster destroyed him miserably. It was hard to stomach and watch.
That notebook. I remember seeing this and hoping he was using this as setup to begin the battle. It just got worse after.
I remember everyone (rap head) was talking about that all over the Internet after that
That whole battle was cringe!!!! His lyrical mystique died that day...
@@jamesgibson3716 He let alot of fans down with that move.
I agree that he should never have brought out the notebook. Yet all of the rhymes those “freestylers” spit were already written down. They just memorized them. I come from the battle rap community and I know this to be a fact.
Watching that Dizaster battle was heartbreaking!!! Then again, he knew about that battle six months before the scheduled date and only took 3 weeks to prepare smh. This is coming from a Canibus fan!!!
Why would he even agree to battle if he's not a good freestyler

He did it for the money and his heart wasn’t in it. It’s also a lot for someone making songs and already in the industry to start battle rapping. That’s working backwards.
Him pulling that book out was embarrassing. He knows better & he had more than enough time to remember his ryhmes
It was weird that he did that. I think he did that on purpose. Seemed like he knew he was losing and just gave up. I actually thought he was doing good in the battle actually, just that annoying Dizaster fans were just sucking his dick so much at any little thing he said.
I was there when he did that lmao. Literally witnessed his ending
@@djcastano1180 his career kinda ended way before that. its a shame cuz i thought Can-i-bus was pretty dope and he was an amazing rapper
@Lakshya Samraik Exactly, before he started his 3rd round and pulled out the notebook, he clearly says , you won Diz.
@@KvngLxo agreed, his chances at any sort of mainstream career ended longgggg before that but I feel like the moment he said “you win diz” his underground career died too. He had a little niche audience in the late 2000s/early 2010s.
Canibus is one of the best ever..FACTS. Real heads know. Yeah he spits shit that goes over peoples heads, but that's their problem...Probably the most passionate MC about Hip Hop ever...The notebook thing does not erase bars this man has spit. He is still putting out great records but yet people think he "fell off" or that his career is over...dude was and still is on the blackball list
I 10000% agree. Yeah, he pulled out a notebook-which was heartbreaking to watch; but Mike Tyson, while losing a bout, cold bit off a man’s ear. Just because Mike cheated doesn’t make him any less of a vicious fighter; nor does it undo his prior wins and knockouts…The same way that pulling out a notebook doesn’t erase your body of work or your skill as an Emcee.
@@cebrum1 real talk most rappers write their raps down , as a rapper myself youre not always "on" to freestyle it might take weeks for one verse to come out of you , the best freestlye rappers usually arent good studio rappers, just like most studio rappers arent good freestyle rappers usually
@@Chuck_EL You are so right! As an ex-hip hop music producer, I’ve come across many rappers (to your point) who may have a strong freestyle game, but have a weak pen game with absolutely no ability to write a song. A lot of freestyle rappers who spit acapella can’t ride a beat to save their lives. If you were to ask 90% of these “freestylers” to spit the same bars over an instrumental, they’d be offbeat, cluttered and awkward sounding.
I think most of his albums after Rip the Jacker weren't that great. And his disstrack against Eminem is still painful to listen to.
PRIME Canibus is one of the greatest technical rappers of all time. 97' Mentality freestyle, Buckingham Palace, Beasts From The East, 4,3,2,1. Any rapper out now over 35 is lying if they say they weren't inspired/influenced/or used to listen to Canibus. He was poised to be the guy at one point. He was ahead of his time and had he got on the internet wave earlier and built his fanbase up he would have been more respected now and given his proper due. Guys like Ill Bill, Vinnie Paz, Roc Marciano, Necro, El-P, Madchild are still making money and built careers off their names and still doing shxt
His Beast from east is one of the best verses ever
"Lost at C" still a lyrical classic
This is what I been waiting for! Canibus was my #1 favorite rapper in '98 and really inspired my writing.
Canibus is one of the most intelligent rappers who ever lived. His lyrical content is virtually unmatched.
He only spits now for us fans, those who can understand his lyrics on a metaphysical plane.
Was he a great battle rapper? Sure. Should he have gone mainstream back in the day? Probably not.
This is beside the point in my view. You have to follow his rhymes with your mind. That's where you'll find Canibus on a transcendental, metaphysical plane of existence.
Bro you gotta relax
Jeah dude he almost defeated Eminem.
In all honesty as a lyricist he is probably the best. Not saying so much as a song writer but as a lyricist imo he's unmatched
Bro I was wondering if you were gonna cover Canibus. One of the illest MC’s from the mid-late 90’s.
You CONVENIENTLY glossed over the "Rip the Jacker" album that was critically acclaimed in Summer 2003.. that was the best album on Babygrande that year.. For Whom the Beat Tolls was fire, and his joint project with Phoenix Orion in late 2005.. also, don't forget about "HipHop 4 Sale" in 2006..
Man I was waiting for you to do this Stunted Growth. Canibus is one my favorite MCs . The industry made it cool to shit on him , but deep down they knew he was a problem lyrically, even Eminem knew it. That's why he pussyfooted an didn't step to Canibus early on. Eminem waited until The Eminem Show to diss him. By that time Canibus was blackballed so he had no mainstream platform.
FACTS!
Em was dissing the nigga in freestyles in 99 and 2000 canibus just didn’t capitalize on it his fault
@@devantewinston4865 No. It was a bunch of subliminal bullshit. Eminem hasn't gone toe to toe with top tier MCs . He much rather fight with pop stars, celebrities, and non-lyrical rappers like Will Smith. Question. Why didn't Eminem just say flat out back in 99 "Fuck Canibus" like he flat out said "Fuck Will Smith" on the Real Slim Shady track ? He knew Canibus was a problem, just like he never responded to Royce da 5'9" when he threw shots at on that D12 diss track Malcolm X. Again, Em knows who to talk that bullshit to. He likes talking smack to people like Michael Jackson.
RIP The Jacker is one of the greatest albums ever. I don't have the time to breakdown the meaning of that album and full context of what it is. But it has an Elizabethan 1600s tone and feel throughout the whole and he's showcasing how he mastered the ability to rhyme using the English language. He doesn't use any slang or Ebonics in the album. Nothing is wrong with that but not to for that album was masterful. Every syllable and pronunciation of each word and every line was spoken with perfection.
That's my favorite album by Canibus. Poet Laureate 2 is my favorite song ever by him. He really showed no other rapper can rap like him. Lyrical masterpiece and I like how you pointed out how the theme of it was Elizabethan. Not too many people can pick up on that
@@chrisgibson2106 That song is so dope and the concept of the album went over so many heads

Well put analysis. The "Rip The Jacker" album from 2003 is Canibus's greatest body of work. Certainly an underground classic album. Entirely produced by Stoupe the enemy of mankind from Jedi Mind Tricks. Canibus sent all Acapella's and Stoupe produced the entire album around them.
I always bring that up, how Stoupe figured Canibus out lol
I believe Melatonin Magik is his greatest body of work but Rip the Jacker is definitely a contender and was stellar
@@lyricsanonymous9036 i really feel like that isnt his best album at all. I think the production was jus wierd n bis wasnt as dope lyrically or flow wise n i feel thats cuz he lost his ego. To be honest, I like all of the albums except for C true Hollywood stories.. use my favorite MC growing up and is still probably in my top five of all time but that album was so terrible that I didn't know if it was supposed to be that way, it was almost like a performance piece or something because I thought it was so terrible.
He should've stayed with Group Home and A+. First time I heard Canibus was on the Music Makes Me High remix feat The Dogg Pound. Both him and Kurupt incinerated mic. The rest did wells also.

Here's my stunts for canibus:
1: Poor production & a poor mismatch in terms of wyclef as mentor & producer of that 1st album.
2: Much as I love bus, I get the impression that he has a stinking attitude & he's clashed with many of the big players in the game which also helped in him getting blackballed from the industry. There are certain things that I agree with him on but maybe it's way he's goes about addressing it.
3: He doesn't make chart hits (which I'm not complaining about) Matter o fact I think his rhymes fly over many peoples heads (too deep for the shallow minded) so most won't understand his content especially when he goes to that higher level (a la killa priest) & we all know that that is not music that sells.
He's an excellent wordsmith, excellent rapper but I wouldn't say a particularly brilliant mc (& yes there is a difference) his production on most of his albums is very sometimeish (like Nas) & as far has my album collection goes I swear I'm about 10-15 albums deep with canibus. He makes a lotta albums, again just like killa priest. But this type of music will never even be a blip on the radar.
Much as I'd take bis over em (yeah that will trigger some) I believe his beef with Em kinda destroyed him & made him look like an idiot.
Lastly, I always wanted a "nature of the threat 2" Ras Kass feat Canibus. That woulda been.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The man has spit some of the greatest verses ever. He deserves respect for that alone.
His biggest growth stunt was going with Clef ..
Yes. And terrible first album. Beef with Eminem did not help either.
Canibus' biggest stunt was his beat selection. That's like if Nas had the Nastradamus beats his whole career.
BC 2000 and Mic Club could've been legendary albums with a decent producer.
Fun Fact: D'Angleo's "Devil's Pie" beat was originally for Canibus for his debut album but turned it down 😕😳
Yep

@James Gibson I did some research premo didn't like the production and the direction canibus was going in general with the album I never knew he beefed with premo so I guess ppl were right about canibus having a huge ego and being hard to work with Diz said it best his peers like pun made it bigger cause he could make a hit song for radio like how to be a player without sacrificing his lyricism 2nd round k.o was only big for him due to who he was going against tbh
Man the beginning of his Vid when he was battling Disaster broke my damn heart. Canibus was that DUDE in 96-99... Its so sad that he didnt get to really demonstrate his abilities. Even listening to his Freestyles in this Vid he still comes across with fire like he wrote it in 2021. Good video bro.

Yeah his second album was dope to me.... From production to lyrics
Both of his albums the first and second were his only two rawest albums, the rest i just gave up on

I'm still a Canibus fan, even in October 2023. His 2nd album was my favorite. You're still one of my favorite lyricists. 👍👍
I'm a LL fan but Bis was/is a beast and 2nd Round KO is definitely one of the greatest diss records. With that said it's not good for a rapper's claim to fame to be a diss record. Love Bis but hated that 1st album...definitely underperformed. I still like his freestyles better than his actual music. Certain albums like For Whom The Beat Tolls are better than some of his earlier stuff but still not that great overall. And I don't think Dizaster beat him in that KOTD battle, Bis beat himself. That 3rd round is still cringy to this day.
That's really what happened...Canibus did himself in. But the problem with his 1st album is that it didn't live up to the LL battle/beef/hype. If 4321 didn't happened, then Can-I-Bus would have been viewed as a pretty decent debut album. The rhymes could have solidified the album. But instead everybody went straight to 2nd round k.o. and the rest of the album was an afterthought.
I'm not saying that Can-I-Bus was the greatest album, but the expectations of that album definitely did it in
Poet Laureate is still the most lyrically insane track ive ever heard. It goes beyond most peoples heads so itll never get the recognition it deserves.

What's crazy is Canibus should be classed as one of the goats proof that it's not all about lyrics
The beef with LL definitely stunted his rise to stardom. A lot of fans don’t know LL told canibus told to change his verse on 4,3,2,1 and he would do the same but he never did. All because of his ego.
Right, LL was on some grimy stuff. What do you think about this? Canibus is my favorite rapper of all times but i think LL "can i bus" record was better than Canibus " 2nd round" record. However i don't believe for a second that LL wrote " Can i Bus", the punchlines, vocabulary, word-play and metaphors he used in that song were unlike anything he has ever recorded, it clearly didn't come from his brain. Therefore in my book Canibus won the battle by default.
Actually the LL beef helped him, because no one knew who he was before that. His songs just sucked. And from other rappers, he had a arrogant attitude that some people just didn't like. People wonder how less talented guys get on, it's because they're easy to deal with...
@@brandoni241 there are plenty of guys with horrible attitude that have achieved success, i don't think his attitude had anything to do with it. Also i don't think the beef helped him because in my opinion he lost the battle. However i can definitely understand people feeling like his music sucks. Although i love his album I'll be the first to admit that the production could have been better. Im not a fan of Wyclef's style of production at all.
@@jakemiles1427 yeah true. I don't if Wyclef is to blame fully. At the end of the day, Canibus chose to rap on those tracks. Wyclef produced "2nd round KO" and "How Come" and those tracks worked. But I'm not sure what happened after that...
@@brandoni241 Not fully Wyclef's fault but i still say i have always hated his style of production. I also dislike the production on " 2 round knock out". When i listened to Canibus first album it seemed like nearly every song waa a sample and non of the tracks make me say " this beat is nice". However, his subject matter and lyrics were on point but a rapper needs more than that to acquire mainstream success.

Battling is not canibus strength. He's more of a lyricist.
The number one problem Canibus had was he can't write a catchy song to safe his life. He's a "rap scientist", a bar spritter. Not a hitmaker.
That being said, 2nd Round KO is the greatest diss track of all time!
CanIbus is still in my top ten MC's of all time! His albums are still lyrically advanced and he never stopped. In fact his subject matter is even deeper now.
He isnt even top 50

The only rapper who defeated Eminem and is the greatest rapper in describing spirituality consciousness
His imagery and metaphors were way ahead of his time
You can never understand His kind of rap
Many rappers feared featuring him
If u think Common is great then YOU'LL believe he was dope af
Common paid tribute and Be by Common is one of the most lyrically profound and introspective albums in rap.
@@stevejackson8878 Canibus didn't beat Eminem lmao. Canibus my 3rd fav
I am a big em fan but I love bis man dude is a legend 2nd round ko is also in the top 3 diss tracks of all time
Man I clicked on this so fast. This was my man's back then as a lyrical hip hop head in the late 90's I couldn't get enough. Go listen to Navy Seals and tell me my guy didn't have BARS. Fuck out of here
Me neither. I remember always checking for the latest Canibus guest appearance to hear what new hip hop quotable he was going to drop next.
He could rap
But he came off as "corny"
Kids would get clowned for listening to canibus after the first album.
Didnt really have that "it factor" that other guys in his class had. His buzz between 96-98 was crazy in the city tho. Memorable verses and still has a small but very dedicated fanbase.
Big Facts
Gray eighty, why are you lying? Canibus came into hip hop when big vocabulary was the thing. Canibus is a hardcore lyricsits. No kids was getting clown for listening to canibus, especially since it's what new Yorkers was buying. You probably think canibus came out in mumble rap cat in hat rap era .
@@ronaldhonore6973 born and raised in NYC. Canibus by 2000 was a punchline (no pun intended) and anybody that was a hardcore fan got roasted constantly on the block and in school 🤷🏾♂️. His fanbase was dusty message board/hip hop forum types. "Canibus went double wood" jokes were hilarious..
He did change the game even though he got black ball by people in power him and kooljay did have a fun battle but definitely good for hip hop 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
“I Grab Mics And Push Rappers To The Left/SO Fast? Their hearts end up on the Right side of their chests….” 🤯🔥🔥🔥
Man Canibus was INCREDIBLE. He used to have rappers scared to get on songs with him. Still one of the GREATEST Lyricists Of my lifetime. And possibly the ONLY Rapper while in his prime who could’ve gotten dissed in a song by a Prime EMINEM And come back with a diss that may not have only matched his? But BEATEN It. 💯
Yoooo, I hate how @stuntedgrowth never mentioned his "Beast From The East" Verse 🤦🏾♂️.
Channel Zero was soooo underrated
The intro 😩😆😂😂😂😂😂😂🤦🏽♂️🙈I remember 😆😂😩
Still one of the greatest lyrical beast of all time
Canibus pulling out that notepad was like watching Thanos beat up Hulk in Infinity War or Bane giving Batman the beats in The Dark Knight Rises. Just seeing a hero die in front of you.
Gotta correct you, bro. He was never from the Bronx. Don’t kno where u got that from. He actually claimed Newark, New Jersey for a time but even that was a stretch.
He was an army kid who moved all over the place but spent the most time in Canada & suburban Atlanta.
After high school, he went to the Mecca of hip hop because he was a hip hop head. He was on a few street teams and spit well-written bars in studios for artists & execs.
The Lost Boys looked out for him as well as Def Squad. Hence the Jersey & Group Home shout outs.
Maybe he got an apartment in the BX due to his budget but he never repped the BX.
He was a bit ambiguous and shouted out Newark more than anything.
He was a talented lyricist with a book of incredible rhymes who had a bidding war and chose Wyclef for his deal on Universal. It was the wrong move.
But u could def tell that he didnt exactly have a plan when everything he wanted came to fruition. The stakes were a little too high for him.
Those first few appearances tho in 96-98 before the album tho? Ah man, we thought his debut was gonna he a new Illmatic.
Everybody was so disappointed in that first album. Good moments but all in all a terrible album, LOL.
Thanks for the clarification, I thought he was from BX too at one point
@@BrandanTheBroker Dude was a talented ass fan of Hip-Hop lol. His beginning was some of the best words ever written. I remember his album being one of the first disappointments in hip hop. Most people with that buzz usually stepped up to the plate & hit a home run (Snoop, Nas, Biggie, etc). I remember people being so mad at that album lol. People rolled up & smoked preparing to listen to some amazing shit when they copped the album.
Kaiju is his best album. He needs more appreciation from the underground.
To me it was the Let Down of his Debut Album that killed everything. 98 had the Debuts of DMX, Big Pun, Black Starr & Lauryn Hill and they all delivered. Canibus didn't deliver like how all those guys did
1998 was a very good for hip hop.
