  • A Tribe Called Quest was one of the best ever, along with being a top 2 favorite group of all time for me. In no way were they not pioneers or influential and even successful. But for the reasons I will explain, they could’ve been a lot better. Their alternative, Neo sound dominated the 90s for music of that elk behind singles like "Award Tour", "Can I Kick" it and a personal favorite "Bonita Applebum". Their influence and pioneering ways can be seen woven in the cloth of almost every hip hop artist of the times and even more the ones that followed. The group consisted of Q-Tip, Fife Dog, DJ and producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Jarobi White, with Q-Tip and Fife being the main rappers and faces of the group. They racked up awards and nominations from all over the music industry, and all their albums have either went platinum or gold from 91 to 1998 and even their final album released in 2016 went gold as well. With all the success they had, their ceiling was way higher than a 7 year run and not be recognized almost at all today. Did A Premature ENDING Stunt A TRIBE CALLED QUEST Career? Stunted Growth Music

It's interesting to me how you can say groups like Tribe and others from that era ...had stunted growth. Groups like these (i.e. Tribe, Wu-Tang, etc) have careers spanning 10, 20...30 years plus. With albums that most hip-hop fans still listen to. And these days(with newer artists) I can barely remember what any "rapper" put out last week.

    • @johnnydarko4178

@@rayxaivertm well, I don't think you can say he's right. He's speculating. It's an opinion and he brings up some valid points. But who's to say that tribe could have been any bigger than they were had they done anything differently? Their career lasted almost 30 years. Not many artists or groups in hip-hop (or otherwise) can say that.

Could also put on there CNN, Compton's Most Wanted, The Geto Boys, Westside Connection, Hot Boys, 2 Live Crew, Goodie MOB, Tha Luniz, Naughty by Nature, Run DMC, Salt N Pepa, Cypress Hill. Stunted Growth is the hip hop version of Behind the Music. And I'd say he does it better.

Aside from DE LA SOUL, what "super rap group" from the Golden Age '90s survived intact? The (unfortunate) changing, profit-driven climate of Hip Hop pushed "solo" artists, and destroyed any spiritual/soul element that had bound our community together. The worst thing that could have happened to Hip Hop was mainstream (corporate) acceptance.

When you think A Tribe Called Quest.....what do you think? 4 kids from Queens New York, started off Afrocentric, & Native Tongue members ? Well what if I tell you this group brought jazz samples over Boom Bap drums, heavy bass lines, funk, folk, & neo soul-Ish keys. They fore fronted NY Hip Hop where most of the country embraced the West Coast G-Funk rap. The first album "People's Distinctively Walk The Path & Rhythm" great album....bangin' samples, lyrics wasn't that strong but still made your head nod. Then "Low End Theory"...that's when Tribe truly introduced themselves to us....Phife came off lyrically on that album.....Then come my favorite album" Beats, Rhymes,& Life".....one of the reasons why this was my favorite album is because they team up with J-Dilla to form"The Umah" with Dilla on productions, whole album 🔥......Then "Midnight Marauders".....OMG ! They begin to do more collabos outside of Native Tongues, Leaders Of New School & Large Professor......Then "Love Movement" .....good.album but seem to lean towards more radio friendly songs. The last Album "We Got It From Here" well, I like 3 cuts on it but the album felt a little lazy. Then the solo careers.....movie appearances, & even a documentary on there career.....inconclusion, I was a little offended calling them stunted growth because Tribe left a legacy with great music 4 years....we lost Phife the group is not the same without the 5 Foot MC.....now that's Hip Hop.....🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠

He would like to express himself…explore something else…
But Phife was more about being the same … keeping the same recipe…
Phife was on point but the beats and the prod want « ATCQ » anymore …

I gave you a LOT of grief for your Wu-Tang video, but I can't argue with you now - ATCQ never reached their full potential - that does not take away from their achievements - they are my favorite group - but this video is all facts - (if anyone has seen Michael Rappaport's 2011 documentary on ATCQ, there is a scene at the end where QTip and Phife have a screaming match that is hard to watch, and you can feel the animosity) Listen to Phife's Ventilation album and you can hear the anger in his voice - I like Q Tip's first album, its amazing, but sometimes he comes off as a rap Austin Powers instead of the Abstract Poetic - You could feel the tension on their 3rd album, I wonder if that is why Consequence was brought in? Anyway, great video, and again, no one should get furious and list stats - this is my favorite rap group, there are no arguments there - but they should have done more with their potential before Phife passed and many people ignore or don't know that Phife and QTip just didn't get along - -

Phife and QTip hated each other and fought all the time - they broke up long before Phife passed but didn't officially announce it - they made the Love Movement to satisfy a record contract, they weren't speaking to each other, and its why that album has so many guest appearances and unrelaesed tracks - Phife's solo album has so much anger energy because of the way he felt he was treated, you hear it in his voice - I am NOT dissing ATCQ, they my favorite group and legends, just saying, they hated each other - I only watched the documentary by Micheal Rappaport once because there is an awful scene at the end where Phife and Q Tip are screaming at each other....

If no then everything that’s supposed to happen happened . I don’t think tribe would be as big rn it’s a diff time . They not stunted

      We fuck with ATCQ ..
I don’t wanna hear Tip or Phife … I want them to trade punches like on check the rhyme or Steve Biko or The Jazz..
For example.. the prod is amazing on their first album… but because of the thin Phife input … it’s not considered a 5 star album …

Aside from DE LA SOUL, and The Roots what "super rap group" from the Golden Age '90s survived intact? The (unfortunate) changing, profit-driven climate of Hip Hop pushed "solo" artists, and destroyed any spiritual/soul element that had bound our community together. The worst thing that could have happened to Hip Hop was mainstream (corporate) acceptance.
