There's this emperor and he asks The Shepherd's Boy. "How many seconds in eternity?" And The Shepherd's Boy says "There's this mountain of pure diamond, it takes an hour to climb it and an hour to go around it. And every hundred years a little bird comes and sharpens its beak on the diamond mountain. And when the entire mountain is chiseled away the first second of eternity will have passed." You may think that's a hell of a long time! Personally I think that's a hell of a bird.
Chills every time.
That bird is an inspiration.
Loser for writing that out
Took him 4.5 Billion years to tell that story
Not only Moffat’s best script, but one of the most visually stunning episodes in Who and the finest single performance I’ve seen in the show thanks to Capaldi, who managed to make 55 minutes of walking around a castle alone as captivating as it is heartbreaking. A tragic, honest depiction of grief which goes straight to the heart of the Doctor alongside Murray Gold’s best score, it’s my favourite piece of television ever. The finest hour of everyone involved and a true masterpiece. I can’t imagine any other Doctor capable of an episode like this.
I agree with every word of yours.
Can't say it better, my favourite episode ever x
This episode is shit. How is 55 minutes of walking down corridors mumbling to yourself a true masterpiece?
@@justsomerandomguyonline1144 This episode seems to have triggered your thin skin. Nothing better to do?
@@justsomerandomguyonline1144 peter capaldi, that’s how
Personally, I think that’s one hell of an episode.
Why do you hate my countries national animal?
This episode was an experiment by Moffat to see if it is possible to have an episode consisting of nothing but the Doctor talking to himself in a monlogue for an hour and have it still be watchable.
Not only was it watchable, it was epic to the power of 4 billion - univerally acclaimed and consistently in the top 5 of all best episode rankings of Doctor Who (Classic or New).
I've heard him say it was at a point where he had done so much Who that he needed a challenge
And the experiment failed
Oh hi @@justsomerandomguyonline1144, how are you? I see you managed to remember your RUclips password just in time for Elliott's reaction.
@@justsomerandomguyonline1144 Unfortunately, so did your mom's birth control.
@@justsomerandomguyonline1144I disrespectively disagree
Megan!! I'm saying this as a person who's watched many many Megan reacts and this comes from nothing but appreciation... But you need to stop thinking that everyone else is smarter than you! Noone else here got how it all fit together before the very end either. And if they say they did they're lying. :)
But you're absolutely spot on with many of your analyses, this WAS the season when Capaldis Doctor became a holistic character. Glad you liked the episode! Both because I liked it, but also because it's Elliots favourite.
Merry Christmas you two awesome peoples!
Indeed!
There's a great moment when Peter puts a skull on the castle wall and there is a fade to Peter's face and its the same shape. The skulls were modeled on the life cast of Peter's head that the makeup dept. took so it's actually a representation of his head
The Doctor in a nutshell: They'd rather punch through diamond for four billion years than give up a secret. What a beautiful lunatic.
@Heather Stephens As far as we know, he never did. It's never been made clear who or what the hybrid was.
@@robvanriot I'm glad you also stopped watching 😁
@Heather Stephens He didn't give up the secret because it was a bargaining chip. Once he got his eyes on Gallifrey he didn't need to keep it any more.
Love that the creature stalking him was from a childhood memory of seeing someone die.
Punching through that wall for four billion years is unrealistic beyond belief.
I love 12's CSI: Miami moment at the end, when he puts on the sunglasses like Horatio. "YYEEAaaaahhhhhh!!!!!!"
"I'm loving this monologue, not gonna lie" cue Elliott giving us the look 👍🏼👍🏼
The Best Episode in Television History is here
Wow another one? This may be the best week of this year.
And when Megan gets to Heaven Sent, the first second of eternity will have passed!!! :D
I remember LOTS of people saying Heaven Sent being their favourite episode ever. And after watched it, I really was blown away and understand why. It's definitely one of my favourite episodes in DW.
One thing that I really love in Heaven Sent that this entire episode is a metaphor of fighting grieving or depression. I never notice it at first until someone point it, but as someone who suffer depression a long time ago, I can see how true this is. Sometimes, grieve and depression can takes a long time and a long way to heal. Just like how Twelve keep punching the wall, despite knowing how hard it is, for many times.
And the sountrack. I love "The Shepherd's Boy" and I can just keep listen to that over and over again.
Steven Moffat's magnus opus. A fantastic, mature, emotional and intelligent examination of grief and bereavement, accompanied with stellar direction from Rachel Talalay and a wonderful Beethoven-esque soundtrack from Murray Gold, and topped off with a spectacular tour-de-force performance from Peter Capaldi. Heaven Sent definitely deserves its reputation as one of the best ever episodes of Doctor Who
I miss Moffat so much ! (and Capaldi. But Capaldi is my Doctor, so of course I miss him !)
murray gold really did go full beethoven for most of the episode, and god i’m glad he did. well said.
Spot On! Everyone on their top form! It's episodes like this that made me love Peter's Doctor. Made me doubt the ratings were falling. He's such a compulsively watchable Doctor. I'm not sure how many others could have pulled off this episode so well, without a foil! I don't wish to insult the other actors. But, Peter and David spring immediately to mind.
@@MrRjhyt agreed! nothing against the other doctors, but i can’t imagine anyone else doing heaven sent justice in the way capaldi does. it fits the twelfth doctor perfectly, and capaldi acts his heart out. i could have watched him as the doctor forever, and this episode proves why. compulsively watchable indeed, and a truly captivating performance.
The best of doctor who.
11 is my doctor, but this episode made me fall in love with Peter as the doctor. The score, the writing, the editing, the set design, and of course Peter's acting, everybody nailed it. A true gem.
This is me as well, 11 is my doctor for sure but this episode is possibly the best of new who
You did it! One of the few Reactors to finish Heaven Sent and find your copy had not been corrupted. Wowsers indeed.
When you begin your life, it begins its journey.
One day you will stay somewhere for too long, or sleep too deep.
And then a shadow will fall next to yours, then your life will be over.
Are you ready to begin this journey?
Got to be said that Rachel Talalay's direction here (returning for another finale..Technically) as well as the late great Michael Pickwoad's set designs are truly amazing, may he rest in peace. I just love everything about this episode 😍
If you have a brilliant writer like Russell t, writing for example "midnight". It's a simple episode inside a tin can the whole episode, yet its one of the best episodes of TV history. And then you get another brilliant writer like Steven Moffat who wrote this episode, there's only one actor in one building, yet its one of the best episodes in TV history. Just proves writing and acting do matter😂
Remember back in the day when Moffat first took over, and everybody hated him? Now we look back fondly at Moffat, and even consider him one of the best.
Credit to the Doctor. He knows the Daleks well enough to know that the Hybrid could never be half Dalek… because they’d kill it on sight.
It shows how out of touch the Timelords are - they consider it, because they’re so arrogant that they didn’t consider if it *was* possible.
They’re ALSO arrogant enough to consider that, after everything they’ve done, after the confession dial and the Time War, they still think the Doctor considers Gallifrey home - he doesn’t. It hasn’t been his home for eons now; the TARDIS is his home, not Gallifrey. Not anymore.
Also, punching your way through a diamond wall… if you’re going to drive a metaphorical steak into someone’s metaphorical chest, *that* is how you do it.
As well as being one of my favourite episodes, I absolutely love the music in this episode. Peter Capaldi is incredible in this episode and Murray Gold only makes it better. It's just amazing.
Loved this reaction and hope you both have a great Christmas.
I love how you threw misdirections at your gf about the hybrid, was bloody brilliant
This is my favorite episode of all Doctor Who ever. The acting and raw emotion put on by Capaldi here is truly astounding
With you there: one of my favourite episodes too, I'm sure they could in their own way- but just personally couldn't see Tennant or Smith pulling this off to such great effect. Capaldi doesn't just keep the show going on his own for the better part of an hour, he totally captivates- you feel his pain, his fear, his grief... and watching as he realizes it's his own personal hell/torture chamber and as he slowly 'dies' has got to be one of Whos darkest moments.
Being of the older generation, I've been a Who fan for a very long time, & always appreciated Capaldis Doctor was a call back/tribute (I forget how he phrased it!) to earlier Doctors- and he quickly became my favourite Doctor from new Who, but this show was my first introduction to Peter Capaldi, & while he's great in all his episodes, & clearly loves the role- it's episodes like this one that also hammer home just what an amazingly talented actor he truly is!, & it was lovely to see your appreciation of that too!
This was THE best episode of Capaldi hands down. This episode showed his strength as an actor and how well he was the doctor
The Doctor is pissed and he's not afraid to show it
I love this episode. I also like the fact that this episode was originally going to feature a lone Weeping Angel instead of The Veil. Personally, if prefer The Veil. It fits the story better and is just terrifyingly creepy. Whilst Twelve facing a lone Weeping Angel sounded like a good idea. Introducing The Veil instead was a much better idea and paved the episode in a way that made look at The Doctor very differently. Capaldi’s performance is impeccable and the TARDIS mind palace scenes fit the episode perfectly and Murray Gold’s score, particularly The Shepherd’s Boy, is one of the most brilliant pieces of music in Doctor Who. Steven Moffat made this episode so brilliant and it is thoroughly enjoyable to watch.
Capaldi plays solo and it's one of the best performances from the Doctor. He's my favorite of all
I 100% agree with it being amazing because it’s just 55 minutes of pure Capaldi. Like, absolutely one of my favorite episodes, but I can’t pick just one as number one. I can watch this episode endlessly and not get sick of it
Ughhh I just adore this episode and I can't wait for the next one as it's one of my favourite episodes of the show (and I am always willing to defend it with my life 😂)
The type of lily used in the episode is called Heaven Scent. Lovely)
Peter Capaldi’s greatest hour as the Doctor, outstanding performance!
This episode along side Blink will go down as one of the best episodes in New Who History Period
😂
This is the absolute high point of Doctor Who- the writing, the acting and the directing are amazing. I miss Moffat’s take on Doctor Who
I don’t miss Moffat and this episode is far worst than the Chibnall era
@@justsomerandomguyonline1144 You need to get a life.
@@justsomerandomguyonline1144 What’s your favorite episode?
This stands at the very pinnacle of Doctor Who stories, with only a few to which it can be compared. Capaldi is magnificent, Murray Gold is in top form, and the episode plays with emotion, adventure, DW lore and seriously deep ideas, too. I've been waiting a long time to see Megan's take on this trilogy (possibly the word you were looking for at the beginning) and I'm not disappointed. What a glorious episode and what a jewel in Moffat's crown.
Genuinely my favorite episode of the tv show, both considering classic and new who. I love basically every second of it. Only exception is im a fan of the "I left gallifrey cause I was scared" reveal, but to be fair that's more the fault of hell bent. Based on just this episode you could assume that he just means "scared of what would happen if he stayed" or something, and not that whole hybrid crap.
Heaven Sent will always be my favourite DW episode. It is truly a masterpiece 💕
Brilliant!
My favorite episode of television. An Ode to Grief.
Much like "Midnight", this ep. succeeds BEYOND success in tackling EPIC AND emotional themes in a tight setting with astonishing writing and magificent acting.
Those two episodes are two of my absolute favourite episodes with a bullet, no question.
The hybrid is actually the master, half timelord/cyberman standing on the ruins of galifrey as we aww in the timeless children episode,
I love this story so much! Can't wait for Megan's reaction to the finale. I know it's a divisive episode and I understand why, but I love it! I'm a huge Clara fan and personally, I love the conclusion. This is my favourite series and apart from a couple of hiccups, it is so well crafted and acted, Capaldi will always be my favourite Doctor and this is him at his absolute finest! Also props to Rachel Talalay for her incredible directing skills, and Murray Gold's score this series! Can't wait for Hell Bent!
The grand finale continues indeed, doesn't it, Elliot my man, and with the second most creepiest episode, behind of course 'Blink', in Doctor Who history, and certainly your golden bride-to-be Megs DID enjoy it all so much, didn't she. Man, you two really do know just how to make Christmas early for us, don't you, and certainly, after everything that's been going on us these last few days, today only too well included thanks to what the Health Secretary proposed earlier today, I would definitely say we need your presence and videos more than ever IMO, to keep us all happy
I remember finding your channel years ago because of the Shepherd's Boy soundtrack. It doesn't feel like I've been following your channel for that long, but ~5 years is quite a long time.
“Who writes this stuff? Give him a pay rise” - haha love it.
also a shout out to the amazing music in this episode
I liked Peter Capaldi throughout, but this is one of three episodes that cemented him as my favorite Doctor. The other two are The Zygon Inversion and The Husbands of River Song.
Probably, in my top five episodes of all of Dr. Who, that includes Classic and NuWho! God tier episode. Great reaction, 10/10. I thoroughly enjoyed watching your genuine reaction to this episode.
By the way, did Megan become aware that all the skulls in the sea was the Doctor each time, over and over again?
Is this episode the finest ever in Doctor Who? I'm not sure, but it is for me the finest performance ever by an actor in the lead role. And for that reason it is one of my favorites. To carry an entire episode solo is an enormous achievement.
no one:
megan: rip
This episode is an example of Steven Moffat’s highs. When he’s great, he’s genius.
It really is one of the best episodes in all of DW. Moffat is possibly the greatest DW writer in history.
No just no
@@justsomerandomguyonline1144 He actually is, but you feel free to have shit taste in writers
@@jthomann71 if he was the best why did he receive so much hatred during his era. And why is Series 5-10 panned by critics and fans.
@@justsomerandomguyonline1144 Almost every Doctor receives hatred. Usually from small, insignificant tools with shitty lives who need to go online and whine like infants in need of a nap. You're not special. You're boring.
@@justsomerandomguyonline1144 BTW, Moffat presided over the most globally popular era in DW history. This denial of reality you got going is laughable. Grow up.
Thanks for releasing this episode so quickly 👍🏼 Elliott, it is the best episode ever. Murray Gold, Rachel Talalay, Peter Capaldi and the Moff 😍
lol she reminds me of ricky gervais's character "derek " always the questioning " ( not an insult , just a personality trait )
Also 'what's peoples general opinion of me?'. Well I can of course only speak for myself, but I think you're awesome. And the series is, in fact, called MEGAN REACTS so that should count for something.
0:21 Trilogy
I just laugh at the idea that there one time the Doctor went through all that naked.
Love the scene where the soldiers threw down their guns and stood with the Doctor
YES THE BEST EPISODE YES :D Can’t waitttttt
Been waiting for this one. Love your reactions, and 12 of course 💙
Megan's face though
i mean, it is a bravura performance, but there must have been at least one cycle where the doctor was running around starkers.
I'm American and to me this episode was one of my favorite moments on television beating out most American shows lol. Don't get get me wrong I like a lot of American TV too, but I actually check out a decent amount of British tv, some of my favorite comedies from Britain are The IT Crowd, The Young Ones, Faulty Towers, Black Books, The Inbetweeners, Toast of London (A personal favorite as I love Matt Berry), The Mighty Boosh (I love Noel Fielding as well), The newest season of Crystal Maze (love Richard Ayoade as well so add Gadget Man as well along with the various panel shows that feature such entertainers like Big Fat Quiz and 8 out of 10 cats and the like. lol Just wanted to make sure I proved my Bpop cred lol before making such a statement.
I got the idea of this episode pretty early since I already knew the story of the bird. Took like, 15 mins to go "oh wait, its THAT bird? Of course!" Lol. Still loved the episode, top 3 for sure.
What is Megans favourite episode so far then? :)
33:02 - To be fair, the Doctor has form in this regard.
Btw, look at Megan go "Is he in a Time Loop?" 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
This is a brilliant episode, I loved it on first watch and on rewatch since. Capaldi is on top form and is captivating. Steven Moffat brought his all here. I remember back in 2015, a couple of days after Face the Raven premiered, Peter Capaldi came to a DW music show in Auckland in New Zealand. They showed an exclusive clip from Heaven Sent, the bit at the start when the Doctor is trapped at the end of the corridor with the Veil moving in. It was really cool to get an unexpected glimpse just before the episode aired, which made me even more hyped for it at the time. Brilliant stuff!
The castle is trying to tell him something
This is easily my favorite episode of twelve and I believe it's the best episode of new who.
This is why Capaldi is my favorite Doctor
Favorite episode this.
Edit: and then moments after this comment Elliot says the exact same thing.
Doesn't want truth. It wants confession
Not my favorite Doctor, but one of my favorite episodes ever, basically a one man show. Shows Peter Capaldi's sheer acting skills,
Favorite episode of NuWho ever.
8:20 - the best scene in all of Doctor Who!
hahahahahaha THE correct reaction to this episode.
hope you guys are okay with the lockdown. stay safe, have a Happy Christmas!
Oh, Elliott, and your knowing looks...
Bird has everything to do with it
Being attracted to both of you - the perks of being bi ✌️😂
You guys are so cute and Meghan's awe and Elliot's smile xx
Raven is a Bird.
Heaven sent = Ode to grief
Yeah you shoulda known what bird meant but apparently nobody was listening to his dialogue, like that totally wouldn't matter, why would his, the only character of this episode, matter
As this is your favourite episode, could you upload the full unedited reaction on google drive or something similar?? 😊
Only issue I have with Hell Bent is Rassilon. They should have Timothy Dalton back as Rassilon
I mean that’s more of an issue with hell bent than heaven sent but fair enough. Maybe the actor didn’t want to come back?
The Master "killed" him at the end of the End of Time
I hated the hybrid arc
Because it redcon the scene before with Idris
Oh yeah, the Hybrid storyline... erm.... oh dear...
Heaven Sent is an episode I can appreciate for it's many good qualities (the whole perseverance aspect appeals to me) but it's not one that I really love.
I've come to really love the Hybrid arc. It doesn't offer any absolute conclusions, but I like that. It isn't some maguffin or deux ex machina cop-out. It's a theme that drives the narrative and finishes with mere conjecture. An exploration of ideas that motivated the characters, but ultimately nothing more than a legend before the fact. Kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy. It goes hand in hand with these episodes beautiful themes of grief, perseverence, and humanity, in that it is complex, sometimes as frustrating as it is satisfying. I'll admit the events of Series 12 made me more fond of this finale as well, in a 'careful what you wish for' kind of way. Hell Bent doesn't offer you the Gallifrey-heavy story it could have been, and frankly thank goodness. The Hybrid arc doesn't offer any absolute answers, and frankly thank goodness. Series 9 as a whole is so much better and richer for it, and for me it's really where Moffat shone most proud. It's an emotionally intelligent, plot clever ending full of mad, fun, complex ideas. I'd now have it no other way.
Of course it's not Clara
Was always dissapointed with Galifrey's reveal in this episode. he spent hundreds of years looking for his home and it's like he's just got back home after a quick trip down the road. no emotion, no big gasp of air and tears of joy just "meh.." AND IT SUCKS BECAUSE OF IT.
I really enjoy these reactions but I do find it annoying when you repeat everything to Megan as it's happening, especially during the final climax sequence
I noticed the hybrid mention every time when i watchted thru the first time episode by episode as it came out. Never been in any fourm or chat about anything. You just pay attention to the show its that easy
