Clara's exit was always going to difficult. With the Snowmen, we (the audience) have seen that even dying isn't enough. So, a resolution was always going to hard. I must confess, I was crying at this. Clara raging the Doctor spent too much of himself, that the burden of his 4 billion years was too much for her shoulders. Intellectually, I understand the anger. She died just two episodes before, we didn't get a chance to grieve and she's already ressurected!
      * Spoilers *
I didn't realise the essence of a later speech was foreshadowed....

Loved this episode. Clara in the cloisters and Clara's look of pain in the cafeteria when the Doctor says "I'm sure I'll know her when I see her again" I think we really see how much Jenna had been elevated as an actress from when she first joined. As fans at the time we all knew Clara was gonna leave the season before so it was great she stayed. So again as fans were knew she was leaving this season which I think was knowledge that helped going into the three episodes. My one annoyance, was why Moffat left it so ambiguous. I think I would have been happy to just see Clara to say to Me, oh I guess let's go back to Gallifrey. However, the whole "long way round" took some edge off it. It meant she was no longer gone, but 'going' which as you can see from Megan is even tougher, 'I know I'm not going to see you again but you haven't actually left so why?' anyway, just my opinion. ruclips.net/video/RzjE3V25cVg/видео.html

Series 9 is a GOAT series and I really don't understand why there are so many people who claim it to be the worst thing to ever happen to Doctor Who. Thankfully Series 9 is just as loved as it is hated in different parts of the fandom, same with Hell Bent itself which is also really good.

“i had a duty of care.”
the delivery of that line always shatters my heart. the scene in the cloisters is so beautifully acted.
i still believe that the trilogy finale of S9 is some of the best this show has to offer, and hell bent is no exception. it starts almost like a (very) badass western film and develops into a beautiful story that swaps out the expected big gallifrey finale for a far more intimate affair. one of moffat’s best subversions, as a personal finale was needed instead of a big lore changing thing, which can feel a bit empty (timeless children, i’m looking at you). it feels like the right decision, as the series was never about gallifrey or the hybrid; it was about the relationship between the doctor and clara, and how far the doctor will go for her.
it’s a complex, heavy and emotionally intense finale, but it’s episodes like this that remind me why i love the show. i’ll defend hell bent until my last breath!

I like Hell Bent a lot. It's obviously not going to scale the heights of Heaven Sent - few episodes do - but I find it a poetic, lyrical story that rounded off the series nicely. I still don't understand why some people dislike it so much; I can think of dozens, even scores, of episodes that are far, far weaker than this.

She was Missy's 'masterpiece'. Specifically chosen to intrigue the Doctor. She's an odd case, her fate being more ringfenced by time lords than any other. Being collateral damage in the President's plot, with the high council's acceptance, was the last straw. You don't always get all the resolutions you want but I for one wanted to see how the Doctor dealt with the provocation. Interesting that Ashilda ('Me') gets a repechage at taking care of Clara... What a training regimen!?

I think it's because they don't want to shove it at our face as we have 2 doctor romance with Rose and River and petition from fans. Even so, there is romantic feeling from Clara to 12 and vice versa. I just give 1 example for Clara and 12. In Clara case, it is Mummy in orient express episode where Clara said "i love you". That was actually intended for 12. In 12 case, he started playing Pretty Woman when he saw Clara + he can only see her in the crowd at Magician apprentice.

I don't understand why this episode has so much hate directed to it. Yes, I know the Moffat trait of "Oh No, they're dead, oops no they're not" is tiresome at this point, but I love it especially the reverse Donna ending

    • @SteelSpurs

Not really of the “not dead” aspect. Mainly the “we thought we were getting a vengeful Doctor on Gallifrey” and we got that for the first few minutes, then we traded that for the Doctor shooting someone and risking time for a companion that some were getting tired of.

In my opinion the problem with Hell bent is just a matter of expectations and perspective. After the end of Heaven Sent, I think a lot of people (me included) expected a big, bombastic finale, because Gallifrey was on screen for the first time since the 50th. They expected an episode focused more on the time lords and their relationship with the Doctor.
The idea of the Doctor facing the time lords once again after the Time War and dealing with its aftermath was a fantastic idea, I just wish they expanded a bit more, like having an entire episode just for that, while having another one for Clara. But this wasn’t the right time, they were handling the Doc and Clara’s relationship primarily. But at least we had a bit of that in Hell Bent (and it was fantastic!).
In the end, seeing the previous episodes, it was only natural that even the last one was going to be centred around the Doctor and Clara’s relationship. But I can see why the fact that “the mighty time lords” were “put aside” because of Clara messed with people.
After a couple of rewatches, the concept of the “toxic” relationship between the Doctor and Clara really grew on me, so I started to really enjoy the main focus of the episode. It’s just a pity they “wasted” the return of Gallifrey, because it was worth even a two-parter in my opinion. Maybe they could have brought back just a delegation of time lords (something similar to “The End of Time” maybe) to deal with the Hybrid problem, and save the return of the entire planet for another special occasion. But I'm no screenwriter, so I'll just applaude Moffat's effort!

  • @malcolmandpenelope
    @malcolmandpenelope 3 года назад +23

I really didn't like this one at the time-- I found it unintentionally comic at times, jarring and weird-- especially after the dizzy heights of the previous episode. I remember just being confused at how Clara was being brought back, after being so unsettled by her departure-- and just feeling it was all a bit silly. With the benefit of distance, though, I love it, even the parts I still think are uneven or weird. There's such a darkness to The Doctor and Clara's toxic, obsessive dynamic, but there's also such a deep love that springs from her empathy for others and her ability to pull The Doctor into empathy no matter the cost. Seeing her eventual choice, in light of everything that happened between them, is probably my favourite end to a companion's story. Knowing she had to remove herself from him because they were always going to encourage the other to destructive, adrenaline-based acts of compassion-- understanding just how hard and long he fought to get back to her, damn the more I think about it the more I actually think it's brilliant, warts and all.

This episode has the most satisfying line in the entire show.
Rassilon: "Who does he think he is?!"
General: "The man who won the Time War."
Just hearing another Time Lord acknowledge that the Doctor was the one who saved them all in a tone of respect and reverence makes it all worth it.

This may be my favorite episode of Doctor Who ever! New or classic. I’ve been watching since 1980. It’s got it all! Gallifrey, time lord society, Bad Rasilon! Also it’s Very Sci Fi! And I love all the sergio Leone -esque, imagery and vibe.
If this had been the first episode I’d seen I would have been hooked, like I was with Tom Baker forty years ago!

I’ve just had a thought, if Clara’s biological processes have been time looped, between one heartbeat and the next, to the point where even her breathing is just a habit and unnecessary. What happens to the lemonade she drank in the diner? Does it just stay in her stomach for the next however many years, till she eventually goes back to Galifrey to die? If she doesn’t need to even breathe, then surely she doesn’t need to drink, or pee! Is she running round the universe with a pint of lemonade sloshing around inside her forever? Anyway, great reaction as always! The next Christmas special is one of my favourites! Can’t wait to see what Megan thinks of it!

Personally I like this episode a lot. I get people were upset about the return of Gallifrey being basically a subplot but I think series 9 does a good job at showing how his priorities shift from finding Gallifrey to his love and protection of Clara. The episode makes it clear that this is a bad thing- their bond could possibly be the thing that prophetically destroys Gallifrey, and the Doctor had gone too far trying to bring Clara back. We’re not supposed to like that decision. As Me says “she died billions of years ago, and it was sad and it was beautiful.”

I love this episode, I thought and still believe it is beyond brilliant. I like to think that Clara died the way she did in "Face the Raven" and stayed with "ME" Ashildr, until the very end and it was her, that knocked on the TARDIS door 4 times, because Clara had a "Duty of Care", to make sure Ashildr did not go through time all alone.
I found Clara finally taking on the Doctor role with an Ashildr Companion, gave me a happy feeling and was the perfect ending for the Companion who gave the Doctor, his marching orders (oooohh, that is why some people dislike her? I get it, I don't agree, but I get it now)

It's not a LUSTY romantic love between Clara and the Doctor. It sorta was that before the Doctor regenerated and was young, and Eleven was attracted to the mystery she was, and then infatuated with her. And Clara was with him. Then he turned into an old man... So then those feelings of love stayed, but changed and the feelings of lust became forbidden, but the love remained, and I would say deepened.
That said, this isn't my favorite finale either. I feel very flatly about it really. Glad she's not dead by the end though.

The first 15 mins of this episode on Gallifrey, culminating with The Doctor facing off against the Time Lords, was a highlight of the series for me. Personally I LOVE this episode. I think it concludes the arc perfectly. (This is all gonna be my opinion, just so I don't have to respect that 😂)
The doctor returning to gallifrey was never the main focus of the episode, it was ignored just how the doctor ignored it when he was on a desperate path to try and save his friend, and so this episode is symbolic of that. Also people always say that Clara didn't die but I don't think that's true, Clara did die, we saw it happen. However it just happened when she was ready. In a way this ending is more sad because not only has she had her death messed with, but the man who did it is also the man who now can't remember her. The craziness and audacity of this episode shows the craziness and audacity of the doctor and the entire episode tells the story of what the doctor was fighting for in the previous episode. It helps us see why he didn't give up, it's because he couldn't accept his friend was dead and in interfering it resulted in something even worse.
So ye Happy Christmas for tomorrow everybody :) - I'm extremely excited as I've wrapped my dad a toblerone so that it looks like a (slightly mushroom-like) lamp😂.

Well, Hell Bent isn't my favourite episode, but I do find this episode is interesting and unique, despite the divide opinions for many people. Perhaps one of it with Me and Twelve talking. There's just something unique with their conversation, especially with The Hybrid, that makes me feels intrigue. And oddly enough, after Timeless Children, I find that scene quite interesting, in a better words to said.
I do love the diner scene because how heartwarming and sad it is. There, Clara experience what Twelve said back at Deep Breath. "You can't see me, can you? You look at me and you can't see me. Do you know it feels like?" How the role is reverse now. Even with Twelve knows a bit about Clara, he had no idea that she's standing near him.
Regarding with how I see their relationship... well, I find it hard to say. I do agree that they love each other, but not in romantic nor platonic. I kinda see it like soulmate, though maybe not as simple as that since their relationship is complex and had their own way to reflect it.
And man. Cannot believe that Megan already catch-up 9 series and only one more left to react. Times surely went fast.

The reason why the Doctor doesn't recognise Clara's picture for what it is is that he doesn't know what Clara looks like. He knows it's a picture of the woman he'd just been talking to, but that's it. Also, I'm not sure if Megan's seen the after credits of Face the Raven, but that explains why the picture's there in the first place.

I am not intending to be rude, but this about seals it. The response by some to this episode in its initial viewing was fabricated and built up in their own mind.
By that I mean it seems that some of the disdain for this episode has to do with things outside of this episode ** and that will forever sully any chance to have a critical conversation about this episode.
Some of the "fans" of Doctor Who did all they could to destroy this time for those who enjoyed it, it almost seemed like it became their job to do so. I am glad that it has held up and that my initial feelings towards this has been rewarded.
**How many negative comments came about because they did not like Clara, because she was the first female Doctor in NuWho...

Part of the problem I think with this episode, is that Moffat crafted a most unusual and to be honest outstanding episode with Heaven Sent, and I doubt that many other actors could have pulled it off besides Capaldi. He obviously had a two parter in mind, "Heaven Sent, Hell Bent" wth the doctor ending up on Galifrey for the second part. But I think he was also having to write for Sherlock at the time; it feels like he didn't spend enough time on the mid-sections of Hell Bent. Adding to that was the fans' expectations of the first visit of the Doctor to Galifrey in the modern era, and I personally felt let down by those scenes.

Reposting this comment because it appears I may have accidentally deleted it: Regarding the nature of Twelve and Clara's relationship, the thing about their relationship is that it's rather hard to define. If you said that their relationship was romantic and not platonic, you'd be right. If you said that it was platonic and not romantic, you'd also be right. Even the actors themselves can't seem to decide just _what Twelve and Clara are_ . In some ways, it's undefinable (but we’re gonna try to do so anyways.)
Yes they're friends, but they're not just friends. Peter has gone on record saying that it's "romantic in the old sense", yet they're "not romantically involved" (1). Jenna has said that The Doctor and Clara have their own special kind of love, that there isn't really a human equivalent to it, it's rather otherworldly, and "you can't put a label on it" (2).
Regarding what Moffat, as the creator of these characters, has to say about the relationship: Moffat has stated a few times that the Doctor still fancies and loves Clara, to quote him, "it’s been a while since I’ve seen the early stages of the Twelfth Doctor trying to pretend he doesn’t fancy Clara". (3) There's also a quote from Moffat stating that "In his very repressed, restrained way, he’s clearly as besotted with Clara as he ever was!" and that the Doctor's "Do you think I care for you so little" line was the closest Twelve got to saying 'I love you' ("That’s about as close to ‘I love you’ as the Doctor can get.") in Doctor Who Magazine issue #484 (4). From that, one could garner that Moffat's intent for their relationship was to be, at least from a subtextual level, romantic. At least from the Doctor's end. But like Peter said, it's a sort of old-fashioned romance, they’re not _involved_ involved in a 'modern' sense. Whether you accept this intent, however, is up to you. It falls a bit into the sphere of art v.s. the artist here. They're written in a way that if you want to see it, you see it, and if you don't want to see it, you don't have to.
Personally, I think Jenna's definition of "you can't put a label on it" as well as the word 'otherworldly' is a fitting descriptor in terms of their love. It's layered and complex, it fits both romantic love and platonic love, but it also transcends that. How the Doctor and Clara love each other can't quite be defined, because it's their own version of it. They're not _involved_ (sorry for using that word so much), but they are indeed in love with one another. It's one of a kind, and I think that's what's interesting about their relationship. The fact that almost every interpretation of it is right in a sense.
(I'll include the quote citations down in a reply below, hope this helped with defining Twelve and Clara's relationship a bit. Great reaction as always! Hope y'all are well)

I see Clara and Twelve's relationship as queerplatonic - meaning it's platonic, but with the kind of emotional intimacy and implied exclusivity that's normally associated with a romantic relationship; closer than best friends without actually being romantic.

Is it bad that, as soon as I saw "Nevada, USA", my mind *instantly* went to the American Dad "GOOD MORNING U-S-AAAAAAAAAAAAA!" tune?
Also, yes, Twelve and Clara are *definitely romantically interested in one another.*

I remember not thinking much of this episode when it came out. I was disappointed that Gallifrey wasn’t really used, and I thought the forgetting thing was re doing what was done with Donna. However with distance overall I really enjoy this episode now. There’s some great scenes, great writing, acting and directing in it. With time I think I always focus on the positives more than the negatives. And this episodes has so many great moments even if it isn’t perfect. I still don’t love the idea that Clara flies off in her own TARDIS and never sees the Doctor again. But other than that bit I think it’s really good overall! The cafe scenes are so beautifully played by Jenna and Peter.
I’ve never seen the romantic relationship at all. They care for and love each other for sure, but I don’t think it’s romantic at all.

For us viewers it was nice that there wasn't a week-long wait between reactions. I love this trilogy and have been waiting to see it again with fresh eyes. Maybe the best season ever, but there are still some good things, quite good things to come.
This may have been Clara's last appearance, but if the Zygons can come back, if Sarah Jane Smith can come back, if the freakin' Macra can come back, there's always a chance we may see Clara again - at any time or any place in the universe - since she has a Tardis and access to any place and any thing that ever happened or ever will... Probably not, but we'll have to wait the next 50 years or so to know for sure... I wouldn't mind it a bit, though I know she has an ultimate rendezvous with destiny.

This episode is definitely a step down from the previous episode. But I find it thoroughly enjoyable, especially on the first time watching it. The highlights are The Doctor’s stand off with Rassilon, the performances of Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman are perfect, The Sliders are an underrated creation from Steven Moffat and deserve more appreciation for their sheer creepiness and the cameos in this episode are cool and enjoyable. Lowlights are Timothy Dalton not being to reprise his role as Rassilon, but Donald Sumpter does an impressive job nonetheless, more explanation could be given about “The Hybrid” as it is the story arc of this series, and I feel it should have been referenced more. But overall I enjoy this episode, but it is definitely a step down from Heaven Sent but I do like it nonetheless.

My main reasons for disliking are because after finally seeing Gallifrey back in full, finally seeing the return of the Time Lords, and the magnificent way Clara went out, I was expecting a vengeful Doctor taking revenge on the Time Lords who trapped him and the repercussions of the Time War. We got that for the first 10 minutes and it was great. Then it immediately shifts to the Doctor and Clara again. Don’t get me wrong, I like Clara, but I wanted to see the Time Lords and the Doctor duke it out.

I have mixed feelings about Hell Bent. I really like the first 20 minutes on Gallifrey, and the direction by Rachel Talalay is amazing. I think it's interesting seeing a darker side to the Doctor and how he reacts when those closest to him are targeted. It's cool seeing Rassilon return too. The ending is nice and closes the curtain on Clara's story. However, I feel Clara coming back undermines her exit in Face the Raven, in a similar way to Rose and Donna. The Hybrid arc is messy and doesn't get resolved properly, which is a shame as there was some potential there. Overall though, I still enjoy a lot of this story and can overlook the issues I have with it. I can understand why Moffat chose to bring back and focus on Clara, rather than have the Doctor getting revenge on the Time Lords and leaving the series with a darker ending. Series 9 is great, one of my favourite seasons of New Who.

I personally really like this episode. I feel as though being able to see how far the Doctor could go if he were to break his rules is great to see and I believe Capaldi was the best to show this. I think the ending is a satisfying conclusion to Clara's story, she slowly becomes more and more like the Doctor to the point where she herself is travelling in her own TARDIS. I don't mind that the death in Face the Raven is somewhat retconned because that still happens and as Me says it's sad and beautiful nonetheless. I didn't feel as though this takes away from that scene because Clara still dies then and that's how her story truly ends, but she's going the long way round like the Doctor always does. (also, touching on the thing at the end where you talked about people thinking Clara and the Doctor's relationship was bordering romantic, I viewed it to be a space grandad relationship, no hint of the feelings 11 and Clara had towards each other, 12 and 11 are very different and while they both care for Clara, they care in different ways, and honestly I think space grandad is the best way of viewing them.) p.s the jumpers are good x

She's a wonderful companion for him (even if I don't really like her. Just to much in love with Amy and Rory's era), but we know who he's in love with. Moffat shows it in many ways, in this season, the next season and the novelas.

I mean, could you get more petic?
But no, this is just controversial for some people who clearly don't like excellent dialogue & 2 of the best episodes ever.
Seriously, what in the fork could be controversial about her story here, it literally changes nothing & inserts a whole literal universe of life for her iwth an immortal who also happens to be 1 of the most experienced beings in this universe, AND it leaves all of that for every person who watches imagination, & also leaves all of that alone at 1 in the same time

The beginning where it looks like Clara has amnesia instead of the Doctor was brilliant.

I did not hate Hell Bent as it had really good moments and chemistry but I do not like the undoing of Clara's death. I feel like it misses the point it made itself in the episode when Me said here death was sad and beautiful. It was a perfect ending to her story and was emotionally so impactful. Bringing her back cheapens it in my opinion. That said, I also agree that Heaven Sent is my favorite episode of Doctor Who and one of my all time episodes of any show.

I've noticed some fans really enjoy and get touched by the emotional stories in Doctor who, they notice things like the significance of 4.5 billion years, and the way Clara gets angry with Doctor for even doing that, Megan is exactly like that. There are also some fans who almost don't even realise any of the emotion or sentiment and can only see the return of Gallifrey and want the show to focus on timelords and time lore. Luckily, this isn't Elliott, but some fans are and I think this is where the controversy comes in
