This is my favorite Patti song. The vocals, the emotion, the lyrics get me every time.

The Patti LaBelle song If You Asked Me To, is played on the end credits for the James Bond film Licence to Kill (1989).

This music video was filmed the day after the funeral of LaBelle's sister Jacqueline "Jackie" Padgett who died of lung cancer at age 43. (She was the third of LaBelle's sisters to die; all three of Patti's sisters died before age 44.) As such, the context of the song changed dramatically and really gave a new meaning to Patti on a personal level.

Mind you, after Patti's last sister Jackie died, I think it was about eight months later her father died from Alzheimer's.
Patti LaBelle was touring throughout all that, only going home to put her loved ones to rest and still touring.
Her concerts were phenomenal during this time, so emotional, just something that should've been recorded for people to see and study.
There is no one like Patti LaBelle, and there will never be another singer like her.
She's still phenomenal at seventy-eight years young.
She's still an amazing vocalist! 💕

I grew up with Celine Dion's version so every time I hear Patti it sounds brand new lol. Both divas did their thing though, no doubt about it.

This song was featured in the ending credits of the James Bond film, License to Kill. Celine Dion's cover was commercially more successful, but I have always preferred the original version performed by Patti LaBelle.

The only one who can sing this song with this passion and involvement is Patty Labelle, in Celine Dion's version while it is very beautiful it does not compare to this, + as if Patty Labelle sang My heart will go on, it would not be the same

I'm seeing this reaction video months later but decided to comment. You're absolutely right concerning the direction of the track. It was MCA's attempt to tone Patti down in hopes that she would achieve pop success. I always thought they never really tapped into her soulful side in the way Philly International did with songs like If Only You Knew. Anyway, your reaction video was on point. Thanks for sharing!

This was not MCA's attempt to tone her down and achieve Pop sucess as MCA already accomplished that with On My Own - a #1 Pop song. This song should have done just as well but Pop radio wouldn't play this song. Thats why the song writer Dianne Warren had Celine rerecord it. Celine made it a hit that Patti couldn't because Pop radio catered to Celine. Patti was very vocal about this and rightfully so.

From the License To Kill soundtrack (James Bond). Hated the remake. Check out the title song by Gladys Knight.
