EPIC FAIL for historical accuracy. Simply dreadful. Watch the 1970 film Waterloo. It's been uploaded on RUclips and is a very good film both in terms of acting (Rod Steiger and the late Christopher Plummer) and historical accuracy.

When I first heard about this film being made, I eagerly awaited its release. No doubt many others did as well. What on earth has Ridley Scott done to the story of Napoleon Bonaparte? I have only seen some excerpts uploaded to RUclips and read some reviews. All of these have confirmed my intent to not watch the film. Napoleon's masterpiece of strategy and tactics in defeating the Austrians and Russians at Austerlitz is reduced to the scene of some of the Allied troops trying to retreat across a frozen river, with many succumbing to French artillery fire. Something like this did happen at the end of the battle, but it wasn't the cause of the Allied defeat. The Battle of Waterloo, so well documented by so many, is turned into a farcical presentation with redoubts and trenches, none of which were used in that battle. And Napoleon did not lead a cavalry charge ever, let alone at Waterloo. He was a notoriously bad horseman, known to have fallen off various horses in various campaigns. He did apparently lead the battalions of the Middle Guard forward towards the end of the Waterloo battle, perhaps thinking of dying that way. But he was persuaded to allow Marshall Ney and others to take over direct command of that final advance. Anyhow...what a waste of time and money this film seems to have been.

I know that for many it was a disappointment but just the experience of seeing it in the cinema was spectacular, the action, the sound, the cinematography, the music, among other things.
If we just look at the film and leave the historical inaccuracies aside it becomes a very good film and I really liked it but if we look at the other side of course it is horrible

Jesus Christ, this is beyond wrong. Please get one thing straight Chris - I have studied the battle of Waterloo formally at a college. I don't need to look anything up. And you completely missed my point. The British were established in redoubts, to save you looking that up I will explain they are sort of walls with spiky things coming out of them. Fortifications in other words. Far better than forming a square against cavalry in which they present their bayonets - not swords incidentally. Yet they leave these fortifications and come out into the open and form a square. Where they can - without any cover - be pounded by artillery before the cavalry rides over them. Which:
      A. They never did in the original battle.
      B. Would be stupid!

amongst many inaccuracies. the battle didnt last 5 mins it lasted hours, and by late afternoon before the prussians came into view (from wellingtons left flank and not his right) Ney advanced forward with artillery and Napoleon was actually winning the battle, if you carefully study the sequence of events. Initial prussian attacks were repulsed but later they brought more troops, and Napoleon didn't have enough men to oppose them and at the same time continue his methodical efforts to roll back the british line. Grouchy with 30.000 men was......elsewhere.

There were virtually no redoubts at Waterloo due to the weather the day before, also where are the fortified farmhouses used brilliantly by Wellington to delay the French. Napoleon was by his own admission not a great rider by this stage of his life preferring to travel by coach everywhere. At Waterloo he had no tent and headquartered at Ferme du Caillou, he certainly did not charge into battle at the head of the cavalry (that was Ney) as he was suffering from terrible bouts of abdominal pain. Finally you don't march down to meet cavalry and then form square you form square where you are situated if they had redoubts these would have been used instead - Finally Wellington and Napoleon never met in person neither did they correspond by letter. I cannot believe how badly wrong they got these battles simply doing them historically correct would have looked far better no embellishment was needed - Watch the Russian version of War and Peace or the 1970s Waterloo you get a much better depiction of Napoleonic warfare this was a joke!

Germany created England and Brought English Language to England and France Created Great Britain but now France and Germany want to destroy Great Britain after they exit (Brexit) from European Union because of their arrogance.. inflation in UK is very high because of European Union Punishment..
Canada was founded by France in 15th Century and take over by Britain in 17th Century because France was defeated in the war.. but the British can't control the whole of Canada because of French Dominance, and the Prime Minister of Canada who was the Most powerful man in Canada is French..
The U.S was help by France to become free country after treaty of Paris in 1783, after they defeated Great Britain from the war.. 10 percent of America Land is British, 15 percent Land of America is Dutch of Netherlands, 45 percent Land of America is French and 30 percent Land in America is Spanish that is why English is not Recognized as Official Language in America because of French and Spanish Dominance.. The Spanish who discovered the America and brought Dollar to America..

NO farm Houses that were the main Focus in this Battle. Napoleon didn't order the cavalry charge at that point and was outraged. Blacks put in the British ranks for the Wokes. Ridley really messed the Battle scenes up in this field, and should had been advised by an Historian.

Where is Chateau de Goumont on French left flank? That is one of the reasons they lost, they took up too mush time trying to take the buildings when they should have bypassed/surrounded them. They had to beat the British before Blucher arrived. Napoleon would have loved the cavalry charge depiction of himself, even if it is totally false.

So, as a historical portrayal, this movie is epic. An epic failure that is. I could wax lyrical about the mistakes, untruths and simply made up bits. But that's pretty much already done. Of course in any film, things have to be curtailed and/or simply not portrayed at all. But at least what is portrayed should resemble what actually happened. The problem being that this portrayal will influence some of those who watch it that it is accurate. Which would be a travesty. But of course films have always taken, to varying degrees such liberties. So maybe perhaps we should look instead on this as entertainment. How does it fare by that criteria? It is watchable and some of the scenes, particularly of battles are riveting. Although the hand of CGI hovers menacing over a lot of it, so some of those rivets fail. No doubt the CGI is influenced by the ever popular super hero films that abound these days. But compare it to the scenes of the earlier "Waterloo" film and decide for yourself on that score. I know which I prefer. I think in the end, as entertainment, I'll say this film has some merit. But to those with even a modicum of knowledge of the history, it proves very frustrating. And, for me, that outweighs anything else.
