The battle of wtf erloo, was expecting A10's to strafe the battlefield, would have made it more believable lol.
lol, the British sniper rifles was silly enough. Why not put some A-10 or even tie fighters in the scene.
This was a horrible movie, and this battle was among the worst parts of the movie.
@@RenlangRen it was entertaining as hell though
@@weezergreenalbum Well to each their own. For me, if something in historical fiction is clearly false, it kicks me out of the story, and I can't get back in it.
EPIC FAIL for historical accuracy. Simply dreadful. Watch the 1970 film Waterloo. It's been uploaded on RUclips and is a very good film both in terms of acting (Rod Steiger and the late Christopher Plummer) and historical accuracy.
Waterloo 1970 is inaccurate and an entirely different style of film. This is a biopic, whereas that is about a single battle. Just enjoy this for what it is - entertainment.
@@claremontcowboy7409 Not if its THIS bad
@@claremontcowboy7409 Tried. It wasnt very entertaining. Had terrible characterisations and just not an enjoyable film
@@claremontcowboy7409 Why would you tell us to enjoy the movie for what it is, and then go and immediately bring up something the movie is not?
I'm amazed at how clean all the uniforms remain....You have soldiers getting up from the semi trenches like they just came out of the cleaners. Did they have a mile long Dry cleaning service on both sides staffed by 5,000 people each?
Horrendous. All that budget. The tents? The redoubts! Napoleon bloody leading the Guards charge. ??!! The battle was dramatic enough without all that crap
My brother in christ did you expect a documentary from the maker of Gladiator? A blow by blow replay in minute detail from a two hour biopic covering Napoleons entire career? Lol.
@@claremontcowboy7409 No, but a better movie for sure. The most important thing here, of his genial life was a gossip love story that any average man could have.
@@claremontcowboy7409 no mate … I didn’t. But a jot of authenticity would have been nice 🙄

Waterloo 1970 , was great .
not great, the best
I'm amazed at how clean and new the uniforms are and remain during battle.
When I first heard about this film being made, I eagerly awaited its release. No doubt many others did as well. What on earth has Ridley Scott done to the story of Napoleon Bonaparte? I have only seen some excerpts uploaded to RUclips and read some reviews. All of these have confirmed my intent to not watch the film. Napoleon's masterpiece of strategy and tactics in defeating the Austrians and Russians at Austerlitz is reduced to the scene of some of the Allied troops trying to retreat across a frozen river, with many succumbing to French artillery fire. Something like this did happen at the end of the battle, but it wasn't the cause of the Allied defeat. The Battle of Waterloo, so well documented by so many, is turned into a farcical presentation with redoubts and trenches, none of which were used in that battle. And Napoleon did not lead a cavalry charge ever, let alone at Waterloo. He was a notoriously bad horseman, known to have fallen off various horses in various campaigns. He did apparently lead the battalions of the Middle Guard forward towards the end of the Waterloo battle, perhaps thinking of dying that way. But he was persuaded to allow Marshall Ney and others to take over direct command of that final advance. Anyhow...what a waste of time and money this film seems to have been.
I know that for many it was a disappointment but just the experience of seeing it in the cinema was spectacular, the action, the sound, the cinematography, the music, among other things.
If we just look at the film and leave the historical inaccuracies aside it becomes a very good film and I really liked it but if we look at the other side of course it is horrible
No. Its utter shite if you know anything about the napoleonic wars. Scott if not bothered about turning historical events into farce should have made a lord of the rings esq movie then he wouldn't be faced with the backlash.
@@Skyemansthoughts If you know anything about film you'd realise this is the same bloke who directed Gladiator lol. You came to the wrong shop if you're expecting a documentary.
Everyone moaning about this film, I love historical movies, and would rather watch this than nothing.
Directors have to make it appealing to everyone and not just buffs who will criticise every detail.
It's all about making money for the film studios.
He did attempt to lead the men across a causewaay/bridge at Arcole but the men were cowards and wouldnt follow. But yeah. Ridley isnt Oliver Stone as far as History goes.
This movie is so inaccurate it took me 3 months to realize who marshal Ney was
Napoleon did not fight himself on the battelfield at this time, he was too old and it was not necessary.😊.
He also had Piles, on foot 😊😊
@@brucepedersen4032he spent a couple of hours lying down at the inn at Rossome in the middle of the battle because of piles. that's why Ney was left in charge and through French cavalry against the allied squares, to no avail.
@@Nedley1 "threw", perhaps?
@@kasegiyabu5030yes, thanks for that correction. Short on sleep over here.
@Nedley1 The movie suggested Marshall Ney began calvary charges early in response to Blucher reinforcements later. I don't think so, Ney maybe thought he saw something. Most agree that those Calvary Charges were much too early and he sent them repeatedly. What have you read ??
Ridley Scott is not Bondarchuk not even close....
Ed Wood could have made a better film!
Ridley Scott is extremely overrated PERIOD.
Watch 1970 film " Waterloo" to see how a proper battle scene is done.

Marshal Ney leading the cavalry charge on 2:11 is by far the most accurate part of this scene tbh
Yes and no Marshall ney did lead the charge but it shows the British advancing when in reality they retired 100 paces and also Marshall ney lead the charge without napoleons direction one of the reasons Waterloo was even lost
Numerous charges no just one. 😊😊
So glad I didn't see this in theaters. Ive spent days, months, of my time reading books on Napoleon; this movie is honestly so saddening. We'll never get anything close to the Waterloo film form 1970.
Nor do we need to.... that 1970 version is magnificent!
I picked up there on AppleTV+ and didn't make it to Scott's Waterloo before I quit again!
What Merde!!!!
Why would British soldiers build redoubts, and then come out of them to form squares when facing cavalry? That makes absolutely no sense at all. Ridiculous in fact.
If you look at old painting that was a stragety they use against the Calvary. A horse wouldn’t penetrate it. A horse isn’t dumb enough to charge straight onto a sword. Look it up
Jesus Christ, this is beyond wrong. Please get one thing straight Chris - I have studied the battle of Waterloo formally at a college. I don't need to look anything up. And you completely missed my point. The British were established in redoubts, to save you looking that up I will explain they are sort of walls with spiky things coming out of them. Fortifications in other words. Far better than forming a square against cavalry in which they present their bayonets - not swords incidentally. Yet they leave these fortifications and come out into the open and form a square. Where they can - without any cover - be pounded by artillery before the cavalry rides over them. Which:
A. They never did in the original battle.
B. Would be stupid!

@@chriswhorror6658 And yet the French cavalry DOES charge the squares in the very exerpt shown here. Those cavalry should be milling around at the edge of musket range, trying to bait a volley from the British squares, not charging home against massed bayonets.
Looks like the Battle of Wokeloo!
This movie did accomplish one good thing: bringing more attention the 1970 Waterloo movie, which is a work of art.
Napoleon did not charge on horseback with his men at Waterloo, he was ill that day.
He wouldn't have anyway. Commanders of armies didn't do that. He did march forward with the Guard before their final attack but was talked out of continuing and never approached the allied lines.
Yeah. Hemmoroids and stress
Does anybody has the feeling that Ridley Scott makes very same battle in each of his historical movie regardless of setting?
What a potential for a great movie. What a sad performance and resulting movie.

I was a childhood Napoleon addict. Having read the book, I learned to type by spending a summer as a serial library borrower, typing Chandler's entire Campaigns of Napoleon and drawing the battle maps because I doubted I could ever have enough money to buy it! (My Nana bought it for me, Xmas of '66)
I bought a ticket to this movie's premiere and WALKED OUT after"Austerlitz", nauseous.
sorry to hear that..but your 100% right utter rubbish of a film
Wow! An Emperor leading a cavalry charge! Oh my giddy aunt !
It's a shame that they filmed the Waterloo scenes in the winter months it just doesn't look right and inaccurate depiction of the Prussians joining the battle.
amongst many inaccuracies. the battle didnt last 5 mins it lasted hours, and by late afternoon before the prussians came into view (from wellingtons left flank and not his right) Ney advanced forward with artillery and Napoleon was actually winning the battle, if you carefully study the sequence of events. Initial prussian attacks were repulsed but later they brought more troops, and Napoleon didn't have enough men to oppose them and at the same time continue his methodical efforts to roll back the british line. Grouchy with 30.000 men was......elsewhere.
There were virtually no redoubts at Waterloo due to the weather the day before, also where are the fortified farmhouses used brilliantly by Wellington to delay the French. Napoleon was by his own admission not a great rider by this stage of his life preferring to travel by coach everywhere. At Waterloo he had no tent and headquartered at Ferme du Caillou, he certainly did not charge into battle at the head of the cavalry (that was Ney) as he was suffering from terrible bouts of abdominal pain. Finally you don't march down to meet cavalry and then form square you form square where you are situated if they had redoubts these would have been used instead - Finally Wellington and Napoleon never met in person neither did they correspond by letter. I cannot believe how badly wrong they got these battles simply doing them historically correct would have looked far better no embellishment was needed - Watch the Russian version of War and Peace or the 1970s Waterloo you get a much better depiction of Napoleonic warfare this was a joke!
Yes Sir !
Ah yes! Napoleon Bonaparte! The famed....*checks notes*...cavalry commander..?
For several reasons using a relatively unknown actor portraying Napoleon wouldve been so much better.
Napolean didnt order the clavary charge. His marshall took upon himself to make the charge
1:36 this got to be joke 😭😭😭 they didn’t swab it in or nothing just let it roll down, if it was real it would have only gone 3 feet away from the cannon
Not even close to history! what a waste of time! surprised the US Calvary didn't turn up.

Possibly. The armies of the day were generally a mix of many different people.

Where is Chateau de Goumont on French left flank? That is one of the reasons they lost, they took up too mush time trying to take the buildings when they should have bypassed/surrounded them. They had to beat the British before Blucher arrived. Napoleon would have loved the cavalry charge depiction of himself, even if it is totally false.
So trench warfare was at Waterloo before it came in WW1? Thanks Ridley Scott for the history lesson! An amazing opportunity to present the Napoleonic period in all its glory ruined by these stupid unhistorical blunders. Why Ridley Scott...WHY??!!
Trench warfare actually first appeared in the American Civil War along with the act of digging mines underneath to blow them up! I know what you mean though - every thing is wrong in this movie!
Man there's so many things wrong with this scene
This is the Michael Bates version of Waterloo, surely? What a travesty!
What a mess. The Prussians arriving on the wrong flank may be the worst. The Carthaginians may have been on to something when it comes to punishment for bad commanders/directors.
I like that in the long shots they tried to give a sense of range. But they massively dropped the ball on giving a sense of the scale of the battle both overall and in close-in action scenes. Good lord what a failure. Waterloo is a far better rendition.
In so many ways, this is about as historically inaccurate as you could probably get !!!
I’ve only seen a few excerpts from this film, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to be a great success !

Complete bollocks, as the English would say. Hollywood can't even translate a heavily documented battle into a film script. Not worth the time spent watching even short clips of it.

Schade! Scott ist eben nicht mehr der Regisseur für die großen Filme. All die Möglichkeiten. Schade!
So, as a historical portrayal, this movie is epic. An epic failure that is. I could wax lyrical about the mistakes, untruths and simply made up bits. But that's pretty much already done. Of course in any film, things have to be curtailed and/or simply not portrayed at all. But at least what is portrayed should resemble what actually happened. The problem being that this portrayal will influence some of those who watch it that it is accurate. Which would be a travesty. But of course films have always taken, to varying degrees such liberties. So maybe perhaps we should look instead on this as entertainment. How does it fare by that criteria? It is watchable and some of the scenes, particularly of battles are riveting. Although the hand of CGI hovers menacing over a lot of it, so some of those rivets fail. No doubt the CGI is influenced by the ever popular super hero films that abound these days. But compare it to the scenes of the earlier "Waterloo" film and decide for yourself on that score. I know which I prefer. I think in the end, as entertainment, I'll say this film has some merit. But to those with even a modicum of knowledge of the history, it proves very frustrating. And, for me, that outweighs anything else.
The English won because they were not arrogant such is history .
