Was following the wife in her '08 G6 last night and noticed the brake lights coming on randomly. At one point, they were flipped 180 as you mentioned, where pressing the brake pedal turned the brake lights OFF. Jesus H. Tap-dancing Christ, talk about dangerous!
Applied some DeoxIT for good measure, exercised the plug and socket a few times, waited for it to dry.
Applied a dab of the dielectric grease, smeared it around the plug, plugged it back in, and ISSUE RESOLVED!
It took me longer to realize that the socket set in this video was a clever ruse [and was not needed to get the panel off] than it did to do the actual repair.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for creating this handy and concise tutorial video. You've saved us a great deal of time and money at a point in our lives where we don't have a large surplus of either.
Truly, you are a god amongst men.

Thank you...this is great. Someone stopped me on my way home from work and told me my brake lights were doing this. Unfortunately I have to go somewhere first thing tomorrow morning and don't have another car...so I was hoping to find a remedy tonight. We do have an auto supply store right around the corner so after this video I headed over there and got some grease. I asked them if they had dielectric grease and they said they did. They gave me bulb grease. I didn't think it was the same thing, but they assured me it was. I smeared it on there and it seemed to do the trick! You are a lifesaver...maybe even literally...as such a problem is a baaad thing if you don't know you're having it!!

A ton of thanks for this tip. Not only did it fix the brake light issue, which was a more recent problem for me, but a host of other idiosyncrasies I'd chalked up to an aging 2010 G6 GT with 105k miles. The other issues I'd had (such as "ESC and Traction Control Off" warnings, and the cruise control intermittently turning itself off at random) had stumped mechanics for the last couple years, and I'd just learned to cope with. I'd said the next fix that the car needed would be the straw that made me get a new one...and then I saw your video! Pretty sure even some of the mechanics I've known & trusted for years just haven't acclimated themselves with "on-board computers", so never would've known to suggest this.
I feel like your video and a $4 tube of grease just breathed another 1-2 years of life in to my car. Thanks a mill!

Used this fix on my dad's 2007 Saturn Aura, exact same set up and it worked like a charm. Got it to work by wiggling the connector and applied the grease to help ensure continued function. Thank you for the video, it was the only tutorial I found.

Thanks so much for posting this. We got our recall letter a week ago but never noticed anything wrong with our car. Tonight on the way home we noticed the brake lights were on while driving. We are gonna try your solution first thing in the morning. If there is anyone that already paid to have theirs fixed, it says on the recall letter that you can send in the reimbursement form. The form will be mailed to you with the letter will will get when the parts to fix this are available! Thanks again!

Not a problem. Don't let a dealership charge you as this issue is under recall now. Dealerships don't have the parts yet but even when they do it will be a small spacer and... dielectric grease applied to the connections. Go figure.

Gabby, I'm Sarah and I'VE GOT IT! I too tried this a couple of months ago, and no go. So, I thought I would try to buy the body computer if that's what it's even called and found that the wires don't just unplug so I thought I was back to facing a repair at the shop that I can't afford and back to square 1. So, this is what I did on a fluke. I had the car running and unplugged the "body computer". The car died, and I thought OK that controls a lot. So, I removed the key, put it back.now works!

Thank you - one trip to dealership when Service Traction and Service ESC came on intermittently. $69 for read codes with inconclusive answers and upload new programs. Then brake lights stayed on until touch of brake pedal turned them off. I bought brake pedal sensor and found your video when looking for possible adjustment on existing part. IT WORKED. Saw a recall on previous year model. The small tube of dielectric grease would have been plenty- will find other uses on mower plug etc.. THANKS

Wow! It worked!! Thank you so much for this video!! You may have not only saved someone from an accident but with your video you may have prevented a death!! It's unbelievable GM knows about this!!! My 2006 G6 was doing this all the time, I first noticed a few months ago when I was driving during the night and looking in the rear view mirror I noticed street signs behind me were shining bright red. That's when I realized my brake lights were automatically coming on. I would tap the break pedal and it would turn them off, this happened every 10 seconds, so I was tapping the break every 10 seconds. Then at stop signs when I did use the break pedal, the break lights wouldn't come on unless I pushed really hard. I had a friend driving behind me once during the day and he call me on my cell asking if I was using my break? Because my break lights weren't coming on at all!?

    • @JustAnotherFNC
      @JustAnotherFNC  10 лет назад

Yeah, pretty crazy. You should receive a recall notice soon if you haven't already. Once they have the parts in they will... basically do what you just did. Actually they will add a spacer in as well.
      So yeah, glad this helped!

Just did this on my wife's G6, as it was having the same problem.
After a bit of research, seems to be the C2/J2 connector (the one on top) that controls the brakes, and not the one on the left side, but it is good practice to smear that grease on both of them! :)

I was nearly rear-ended a few days ago because of this problem. It wasn't until I tried to engage the cruise control on the highway that I noticed there was a problem. The easiest way to check for this problem is to simply walk around the car while the ignition is on. If you have problems with the cruise control turning off, or failing to engage, you also have this problem. The voltage drop of the tail lamps coming on is what triggers the cruise control to shut off.

I have the EXACT same problem with a 2010 Malibu, and what's worse is that when this brake light glitch occurs, the car doesn't think the brakes are engaged when you're trying to get out of park. So basically you're stuck in park because pressing the brake does nothing to tell the car you're pressing the brake, so no signal is sent to the shifter lock to release. This is in addition to the brake lights coming on while driving down the road. FRUSTRATING. Just did this fix though, and the process is EXACTLY the same for a 2010 Malibu, including the locations of the connectors and everything. I'm hoping it works, we'll have to find out. I will add one step to this fix, disconnect your battery prior to working on electrical stuff. THANK YOU FOR THE UPLOAD!

Yup, always disconnect the battery before doing anything with the connections.
I never bothered, but everyone else should.

As simple as it sounds it works! Thanks for the post, it made my day. Give it a try, it saved me time and money. The switch alone is $75. Worth trying before u spend a lot of cash or take it to the dealer. If u go to the Pontiac wedsite there is a recall for this issue being investigated. Keep your eyes open for possible recall on this if this simple fix does not work. This is the same thing a dealer will do to u car. Do it yourself, save the cash!

Thanks ! You are a lifesaver. I cant beleive how fast & easy I was able to fix my daughters car. Now I was able to sleep that night. That was a really dangerous situatuion. GM has really lost it with the G6. Its a nice sporty car with so many dangerous problems (steering failure) to name one,????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!): NO LIKE

You are the man! My 2008 Saturn Aura (same car) was having the same issue. Break light staying on, traction control & ECV lights coming on...I smeared a thin layer of vaseline on the connector (in lieu of the dielectric grease if you don't have any) and it appears to have fixed me. If it comes back I'll bite the bullet and have the recall done.

I'll have them do the "recall" as well, just to say it was done. Honestly all they do is apply the grease and a small plastic spacer according to the notice I received. Glad it worked though!

it worked for me ...thank u ..just bough a car from a dealer a 2007 maibu lt and notice the brake lights stay on when im driving and go off when I pushed the brakes ...first I tried the one that u showed it did not work so I moved on to the next one J2 and it worked all I had to do is take it out and put in again ...thank u very much without that they would probly make me change the computer and pay a lot of $

You have to spray the connectors with Auto Connector cleaner. The lube only prevents furture corrosion/build up. I sprayed mine two to three times (the male end on the computer), each time letting it dry, them on the other side (female end) placed the lube and in the past 40 days the problem has not come back.

Thank you for this video! Been having this issue for awhile and thought the recall fix would fix the problem but it didn't. Did this tonight and the issue seems to be fixed. If I can remember I will update in a few weeks if it is still working.
