I been listening to Savoy Brown since 1997. I believe it deserves a complete studio recording box set from the Decca years of 1967 to 1978 ,now that’s is something I would definitely buy!!!

RAW SIENNA is my #1, and has been for a long time.
Not only for the quality of the songs, but for the magical voice of Chris Youlden.
I do enjoy the albums with the other guys singing (SCT, Looking In, etc., they're all good, and the music itself is always strong), but with Chris Youlden up front, you're in for something truly "special"... Something that draws you inside the grooves in a really genuine way.
Basically, for me, Youlden is a "true blues man"....Mr. Downchild.
And so is Kim on guitar.
Anyway, "Raw Sienna" is the best LP w/Youlden. -- "Blue Matter" features a few gems as well (esp "Ring in Her Nose.."), but overall, and as a whole, it's "RAW SIENNA"
    Marc

The first time I saw them was when they were touring Raw Sienna. Awesome. Unforgettable. Also on the bill that night: The Nice and Family. Both killer as well.

    • @user-yx8cx6bg1g
      @user-yx8cx6bg1g 4 дня назад

@@zabadakxanadu Wow, that's awesome that you got to see them on the Raw Sienna tour! Sweet privilege. I would've loved that.
I'm too young though. I was born in '66, and started with ROCK very early, getting into David Bowie, Zeppelin, Sabbath, T-Rex and Zappa when I was 7-8. But I did have all of my older sister's 45s, so I loved all of the 60s stuff, plus the glorious 1970s. Anyway, my first concert wasn't until 1978, when I was 12. But I was a rock n roll veteran since '73!
That was some show you were able to go to! And yes, Family and The Nice are great as well!

Chris Youlden possibly the most over looked blues/rock vocalist from the 60s/70s so any with him on!
And their version of John Lee Hookers ' Don't Turn Me From Your Door' is one of the scariest/'heavy' songs of the genre!

As you said, ranking these is difficult because there is always a mix of material on every one. But I've tried to keep an "overview" perspective and not get lost on favorite songs, many of which are not included on the albums listed on my ten picks below. Here they are in reverse order, and lest I forget -- Thank you for helping to keep Kim Simmonds' memory alive. #10 - Blue Matter; #9 - Bring It Home; #8 - Voodoo Moon; #7 - Lion's Share; #6 - The Blues Keep Me Holding On; #5 - City Night; #4 - Witchy Feelin'; #3 - Street Corner Talking; #2 - Savage Return; #1 - Jack The Toad.

We saw them in 1970 . Chris Youlden had just left. L. Dave sang lead . Then we saw Foghat on their 1st tour in 1972 ( Foghat/ Flash/ Dr. Hook + Medicine Show/ Kinks $ 6 Aragon Ballroom). Saw S. Brown maybe 5 or 6 times with F. Mac , as they had the same tour management. The headliner was whoever had a new album out at the time. Last time we saw them was the Jack the Toad tour in 1973. They were the last show at Chicago's Kinetic Playground.

First rock show I attended in 1969 featured Jethro Tull, Savoy Brown and Terry Reid. Savoy Brown had just released “A Step Further” and Chris Youlden was the lead singer. I like the Chris Youlden era Savoy Brown best as his voice and songs really lifted the band.

There's a clip that recently surfaced on youtube of them from Midnight Special. It's the Jack The Toad lineup which admittedly is several years into their career but still, the earliest footage of Savoy Brown that I'm aware of.

Interesting that Savage Return was produced by "Mutt" Lange. Their bassist in the late '60s was Rivers Jobe. He played in a band called Anon. That band had Anthony Phillips and Mike Rutherford, who later helped co-found Genesis. I wish that someone like Esoteric would do a box set. Their albums are hard to come by. I did buy two of their albums on cd. The cds were from the early '90s. So, the sound wasn't great.

One of the reasons for the revolving door band members was somewhat the doing of Kim's brother Harry who managed the band, he continuously held back paying the guys among other problems , one of the reasons Youlden left and then Lonesome Dave and Tony& Roger moved on as well with creative differences with Kim, When I saw Savoy in Columbus early 2000's that was a great lineup but then Kim went 3 piece and pardon the pun took a step backwards and never recovered, I recently constructed an archives playlist but it's showing 1 view, very disappointing

Steve Hillage was always a 'mixed bag' for me - sometimes a little too "out there"/spacey (I tend to skip his most Canterbury stuff/aka Gong but then again I'm not real big on 'experimental' music). I do own something like 16 Hillage records (counting collections & live), for me his best are: Fish Rising, Motivation Radio, L, Green, Open For To Next & And Not Or. The live Dusseldorf is good, Live At The Gong Family Unconvention & The Glastonbury Experience (Live 1979) as well. The collection Searching For The Spark is a pretty good place to start for the newbie (if you're flush with $'s - it's a 22 disk box set, even includes some early stuff from Khan & Uriel/late 60's-early 70's)

Another great overview and ranking: one of your best. Great to hear Rick being so enthusiastic about a (currently) out-of-favour genre, though I agree with yokerecords below that Raw Sienna is #1 . To me it is reminiscent of where "Then Play On" fits into early Fleetwood Mac's discography; blues based but with that extra something - a "je ne sais pas" - added. The first album is my #2 and Blue Matter #3.
Any opinion on why the subsequent solo albums by Chris Youlden - Nowhere Child (1973) and Cityroad (1974) - are so bad ? They are especially disappointing after the peak of Raw Sienna. Unless he imploded as a result of personal demons, then it must have something to do with how Kim and the others enhanced and augmented him.
P.S. wrt the Boogie Brothers album, doesn't Miller Anderson deserve a dedicated show ?
