All the albums that Jimmy Dewar sings on is awesome.
Robin is one of my all time favorites. He still tours and I never miss a show.
The 'Long Misty Days' album means the most to me. My fave tracks are 'Long Misty Days,' 'Caledonia,' and 'Sailing.'
Daydream is one of the most beautiful songs ever made.
I would just like to recommend Robin's album 'The Playful Heart' to you all. This is one of those albums that goes under the radar and years later people say 'How come I missed that'. IMO Robin at his soulful, jazzy, funky and melodic best. It's as if Too Rolling Stoned and Daydream had a baby and it was called 'The Turning'. Incredible piece. Dressed in Gold is lovely; The really funky and groovy 'Find me' 'Maybe I can be a Friend' is gorgeous and 'We shall call it love' is influenced by Jimi's 'May this be love' and the soloing from about the 3.40 mark is so melodic, moving and beautiful. The guitar tone is out of this world and Robin's singing is really good. Then for me perhaps the highlight 'Camille' - wow this is smoky jazz. All the songs have a great melody line and soulful, jazzy chords. Robin at his best and reminds you of the 'Bridge of Sighs' and 'Long Misty Days' 'In City Dreams' and 'Caravan to Midnight' days but even up a notch. Please give it another listen friends.
Agreed! Playful Heart is probably ranked 5 or 6 for me!
Yes, it really is one of his top 5 albums.@@bweeks8869
Trower’s solo on “Caledonia” to me, is one of the most awesome lead breaks in rock.
What a great song! Dewar is phenomenal, too, as always!
Bridge of Sighs is the obvious choice, but my personal go-to is Victims of the Fury.
Mine too, his tone on the album is as thick as a milkshake, Jack & Jill is a real ripsnorter, it will melt your face.
For me it's a tie between Bridge of Sighs & the live album, i still listen to both quite often
It’s Bridge of Sighs and Long Misty Days for me, but Victims is a close third.
Victims was the first Trower album I bought and I still love it, but I just like Bridge of Sighs a little bit more overall, but still Victims is a good choice and is definitely my 2nd favourite.
@@markandersen793Absolutely spot on Mark.
Finally Pete, thank you for Trower Studio albums. Here is my Top ten

7.20th Century Blues
8. Seven Moons

ĺo
Robin Trower so under rated in Rock History
Just like Ronnie Montrose :)
Twice removed from yesterday was a killer release.. it’s still my favorite.. and every other lp tied for #2!! Great job Pete
Bridge of Sighs is the perfect album, but to truly appreciate In City Dreams you'd have needed to see them live on that tour. Rustee Allen and Bill Lordan, who'd been the rhythm section for Sly & the Family Stone completely nail it! James Dewar's vocals live were as good as if not better than anyone else of that era. It was a wonderful time to be a Trower fan!
Thanks Pete. One of my All Time Favorite!! Band's, and for me, it has been and will ALWAYS BE, 1973 - 1983, with James Dewar on vocals.
1. Long Misty Days
2. Bridge of Sighs
3. For Earth Below
4. Twice Removed From Yesterday
5. In City Dreams
Those are the five I'm most familiar with.
Robin is so under rated. He needs to be in the hall of fame now.
Five favorite Trower albums:
1. Bridge of Sighs
2. Twice Removed From Yesterday
3. For Earth Below
4. Long Misty Days
5. Caravan to Midnight
But my favorite playing from Trower was on the Procol Harum albums. His absolute masterpiece was Repent Walpurgis, my all-time favorite instrumental.
a true musical legend that harkens back to some much better eras of music the likes of which i fear we may never see again? Thanks for doing this!
Trower is fantastic. That old stuff is so atmospheric, timeless. The first song I heard was Alathea, great riff.
I just love BOS and TRFY.
Those two albums are my favorites of him. Definitely one of the greatest guitarist in history. Verygood video Pete.🙂
Thanks Pete for ranking Victims of the Fury highly and calling it his heaviest; it was quite an endorsement! I had never heard this one and it quickly became one of my favorites behind Bridge and Long Misty Days.
Long misty days is my absolute favourite. ..loved the Chrsalis label roster at that time..great music , great sleeves..
Remember the first time I heard Bridge of Sighs. Played it nonstop for a month. But so many great tracks on his other albums. His song SMILE is so optimistic. Caledonia and Long Misty Days are incredible. RIP James Dewar.
TWICE REMOVED FROM YESTERDAY-bought it when it came out & been a Trower fan since.
He’s so awesome. Bridge of Sighs is #1 and the rest are tied for #2.
One of the first acts I have saw. 1975 and it was sensational. I was 15 and that strat. Dewar vocals were always tremendous and Lordans power drumming. Anything from that era is my favourite. Robin still plays like a dream
I've been a Trower Fan since 1979..I have seen him over 30 times now met him multiple times ( such an awesome humble man, even had tea with him once ) Here are my top 15
BRIDGE OF SIGHS # 1
FOR EARTH BELOW
BACK IT UP ( BENNY DANCER IS A GUTARISTS WET DREAM JAM)
LONG MISTY DAYS
IN CITY DREAMS
VICTIMS OF THE FURY
TWICE REMOVED FROM YESTERDAY
CARAVAN TO MIDNIGHT

HONORABLE MENTION:
BEYOND THE MIST ( BRIDGE OF SIGHS SOLO IS THE BEST EVER CAPTURED ON A RECORDING)
Now you’re causing me to hanker for some Robin Trower.
Trower, Hendrix, and Thin Lizzy were my big three when I was young. For whatever reason I find myself listening to more Trower than the other two these days. I have Victims of the Fury #1.
Pete, you can't really go wrong with Trower--man is epic and STILL killing it. One of my favorites--and it took a couple of listens--is 2000's Go My Way. I think it's right up there among his very best n terms of his playing. Like you, I had to wrap my head around Robin's vocals and oddly, in subsequent albums, as he has sung even more, I haven' t liked those near as much as this one. I consider Go My Way kind of a hidden gem in his discography. I also have to call "foul" on using the BLT stuff in this list. I consider that a different animal than solo Trower, but I can definitely appreciate you wanting to include them somewhere. Thanks for the content brother! Keep doin' your thing.
Thanks Pete for this video. One of my favorite guitarists and perhaps one of the most underrated. Like you, he is the reason why I picked up a guitar.
Thank you for the video Robin Trower is a Legend!!!. Humble and plays with all of his heart and soul. 😊 Underrated and under appreciated it's funny cause a lot of people don't even know who Robin Trower is 1 Love and mad Props to Robin Trower and his great cast of talent.😊 Happy New Year 24
Thanks Pete for covering Mr Trower. I'll be revisiting his collection now. I had no idea there were so many others out there! Cheers.
15-Someday Blues 14-20th Century Blues 13-In the Line of Fire 12-Take What You Need 11-Truce 10-Passion 9-BLT 8-Back It Up 7-Caravan to Midnight
6-In City Dreams 5-Long Misty Days 4-For Earth Below 3-Twice Removed From Yesterday 2-Victims of the Fury 1-Bridge of Sighs.
Thanks PETE received my first cd today best of Robin he is awesome thanks will be getting more albums to add too the collection
Glad to see he gave James Dewar his props. Great voice, great player. Heard ‘Lady Love” in a store and a young clerk was digging it. Blew his mind when I told him it was recorded 46 years ago. Bridge of Sighs is the obvious favorite and his biggest seller. I really dig For Earth Below too and always loved “A Tale Untold”.
Great show Pete! Trower is my favorite after all these years. Victims of the Fury is my favorite but all rock. Thanks for the show. Very insightful.
Thanks I have been waiting for this one.
First three albums my favorites these were a must during my high school days.
my favourite guitarist...surely one of the most 'lyrical' with a warm rich sound. I used to live in the next town to Robin and met him a couple of times when i was walking my dog. A very sweet guy and a genuine musician who records what he wants with no thought of the sales. Special mention to a very underrated album Go My Way...fantastic album and surely would have been a huge hit if it was released in the 70s. Loved the video so thanks again Pete!!
Trower Power! I think that "Seven Moons" is certainly the best of the three collaborations and is also Jack Bruce's best work outside of Cream.
Formidable task as there is so much consistently high quality work in Trower's catalog...be that as it may, your tastes in Robin's work are quite different from mine.
Here is my attempt, but it is really hard to rank them:
1. Victims of the Fury
2. Bridge of Sighs
3. In City Dreams
4. Long Misty Days
5. No More Worlds to Conquer
6. Living Out of Time
7. Twice Removed from Yesterday
8. Time and Emotion
9. For Earth Below
10. Seven Moons
11. Playful Heart
12. Something's About to Change
13. Roots and Branches
14. Go My Way
15. Where You Are Going To
Great video, Trower is one of my all time favorites!
Met Robin once after a show.He signed for me,and was very gracious with his time.He is my favorite,in that the depth, emotion, and expression in his playing is quite obvious and hypnotic.Love you Robin.👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
GOD BLESS James Dewar / Robin Trower . Lisa Dewar e-mailed me a few times several years ago .... Scotland and I have met Robin several times . I like Trower live at Winterland 1975 .
Bridge of Sighs and Victims of the Fury!
Thank you for your ranking of Robin Trower.🎤🎸🎵🥁
You have good taste ,saw Montrose a couple of times never got to see Mr. Trower. They were good live.line of fire , very good. Another good one , take what you need
Great show Pete !!!! A great guitar player
Trower is fantastic.
Thanks!
My favourite guitarist
Victims of the fury was my 1st Trower LP, loved it and still do as it sounds raw, purchased early 80's and after that I was hooked, never did get any Hendrix albums as I never felt the need and am still playing Trower today. Cheers Glenn v from NZ
Hello, Robin Trower!! Thank you for the analysis you do of the discographies of great bands or musicians. I, among many others, love Alvin Lee. I don't know if it would be possible for you to make a monograph of his story. Thank you and greetings to rock and roll from Catalonia!!
good hair Pete, I like it. bless you guys in NY and USA there eh, hope all is well
I really love Benny Dancer, my fave Trower track. Jimmy at his best.
Thank you Pete got to check out Robin trower albums
caravan to midnight for me. great songs great vocals.
Thanks for what you do , love hearing about the True Time Machine Music
Just got into this guy, wow! what an incredible guitar player, love his tone and his use of the wah wah ☺️ plus his solos are firery ☺️🔥
Yes Trower and Dewar were awesome together It was their heyday
Great show, Pete. "Go My Way" must have fallen outside your top 15 but that album has a killer sleeper song, Breathless.
Show idea - gather some friends and discuss 5 songs that changed the way you listen to music (for me, the first chord of the song Black Sabbath).
"Go My Way" is a great album.
That's Pete, learning a lot from your series. Trower and Procol H. I had heard of before but never got into, till watching your series. We grew up in same era, I just didn't go deeper, or expand my listening to music then the Super Groups.
Marvellous!!❤
Great show. Big Trower fan here. Have you heard his 2005 release Go My Way? That one, IMHO, should definitely be in the top 10.
Can’t argue with that list. Got to do a deep dive in the Davey Patterson stuff now . Mission accomplished Mr. Pardo
BOS but the Davy period will always have a special place with me. Fantastic singer and they jellied perfectly!!!!!!!!
When I first listened to my buddies Bridge of sighs album in 1975 I was immediately hooked on Trower. I went straight to local album sttore. They didn't have Bridge of sighs. So For earth below was my first Trower album.
Great list. I really dig some of his recent albums too, especially The Playful Heart from 2010. Davey Pattison on vocals too.
The Playful Heart is absolutely fantastic. Some of his best songs and most amazing soulful, bluesy, jazzy guitar playing ever in his repertoire. Even his singing is good. Please friends check out this album as it right up their with Bridge of Sighs. You want to listen to Robin playing some smoky jazz then listen to Camille from this album.
Trower has an amazing catalogue. Have been getting into him lately.
Pete, been waiting for this one for quite some time. Trower is one of those musicians that I follow faithfully. I am aware that Trower himself was not too happy with his mid 80's to early 90's LPs, and I concur, but I do feel that his playing in these latter years has just gotten better and better. Of course we all miss the vocals of James and Davey, but as a lifelong scholar of the guitar, I continue to enjoy Trowers constant growth on all his newer albums. Some of my favorites from his post 70's era are "Go My Way", ""Playful Heart", "What Lies Beneath", "Something's About to Change", "Where You Are Going To", "Time and Emotion" and "Coming Closer to the Day". For me at this juncture, he just can't do no wrong. I understand, he is not a vocalist and this is what I hear as most people's complaint with his newer music, but for me, Trowers sweet tone and ethereal bluesy playing are the only vocal I need from the man. As far as the early albums, I don't need to elaborate much on those. It's what initially made us all love him!
BTW, I started watching your shows since the whole Covid-19 thing started and now I am hooked on your channel. You've opened up my eyes to so many great Prog-Rock bands that I had missed out on, although I am 10 years older than you and have been a lifelong musician as well, so thanks for that! My wife walks by every day as I'm working from home with an added TV next to my computer, and she says, "Hi Pete!" and keeps on walking. LoL! Thanks for the review! :)
thank you!!!
Lol. I like that story/. I can visualize that in my head. My wife/ two kids/ know not to bother me during that time. They’ll walk by and assume it’s PETE time ! Lol
Gary Joyce - My wife always says stuff like, “That guy is your best friend. You two should meet.” 😆
Pete, knowing you're not a traditional blues fan, I understand why you're not a big fan of Robin's later albums with him as vocalist. I, on the other hand, love old times blues and much appreciate Robin's playing and singing; his vocal fits his guitar playing and the songs perfectly. He's not the young rocker anymore and his style has grown to match his age (and the age of many of his listeners). I love his first 6 studio (and 1st live) albums, but I think his later albums (from What Lies Beneath to present) are the best he's done since 1977. I suggest giving his later albums a try without comparing them to his early albums... I think you'll find much you'll like. I wish you enjoyed them as much as I, you're missing out on a great guitarist and performer. I encourage everyone to give his later albums a fresh listen. Thanks for letting me rant. Enjoying your ranking shows!!!
Toss up for me lately back it up or bridges but I love Robin! Great show.
Hey check out the John Peel sessions , Live BBC , King Biscuit , State to State , great stuff !
On "Good Morning Midnight", Robin laments his late wife. I wouldn't want anyone signing on it besides Robin. And on his last four very bluesy albums, his voice lends an authentic, personal touch
awesome Pete!!! Trower IS the shit!!! have seen Trower front row a few times in a small venue in indy and they were some of the BEST shows i've ever seen. one of my all time favs and i could never stress enough how just so damn under rated he is and i could never understand that at all.. as far as his 80's and 90's material i've always personally loved the "Passion" album myself for what it was during that time period and the track "caroline" was actually a minor radio hit back then, and well deserved for all the material he's releases during his career. but of course "Sighs" is and will always be the top album for me along with the "Live" album and Dreams and all that same era releases.
I’ve been a Trower fan since Twice Removed was released. I pretty much rank the albums by chronological order for the first 6 or 7,pretty much a tie. I might put For Earth Below and Twice Removed at number 1 at different times. Got to see him on tours:For Earth Below,Long Misty Days,Victims of the Fury and just to years ago at the Wilbur in Boston. Still playing great. Big Trower fan too, loved this ranking show especially .
Glad to hear you place Back It Up so highly, as it was such a forgotten gem from him
BLT was the first Trower album that I heard, then Twice Removed From Yesterday . Good places to start in retrospect. James DeWar is one of my all time favorite vocalists. Twice Removed is still one of my favorite records.
Back It Up is a great album! Love Benny Dancer!
Thanks for the video! Aside from the official live album, are there any really great live albums out there. Ya'know, greatplaying and a lush production?
Living Out of Time is certainly in his Top 5. Great Pattison vocals and perfect tone from Trower.
I don't know who between the two I've seen more, Trower or Rush. In the 20s for sure. From bridge of sighs till today. Loved all his band changes but Davey Patteson did it for me and the Passion tour being the most memorable. Pete I'm newer to your channel and have looked to see if you did a vid on Foghat, another great 70s 80s band and still today.
What can i say bridge of sighs makes me think of us kids back then usually up to no good. I loved parking in the woods and blasting loud music
Robin Trower is my favourite guitarist, just love seeing him
live. Have most of his albums. As a Scot who saw Jimmy Dewar in the early days
of Stone the Crows, the albums with Dewar will always be my favourite. Bridge
of Sighs is also my favourite album. Anyway nice to see Passion getting a
mention, total change of style but some great tracks on it. Must admit I did
not like 20th Centuary Blues and many of the albums thereafter.
Totally agree with what you said about great playing but a lack of memorable
songs. Really enjoyed your
views and the comments from others.
Hey Pete! Love your videos! While we're on the subject of James Dewar how about an appreciation of Stone the Crows, great Scottish band from the early '70's!
Only own Bridge of Sighs but its an F'ing monster !!
Highly recommended to Check out the other Trower albums from the 70s, they're all good
@@Kronwall yeah I've meant to, many of them aren't easy to find some out of print (or were when I was looking for them a few years ago)
@@GMHG777 There is a boxset of 10 records on amazon. And it is cheap!
Glad to see Victims of the Fury get some love. It’s my favorite with Bridge Of Sighs a close second. Caravan to Midnight also killer.
I have to admit that I only really know three of his solo albums, so I'll rank those:
3) In The Line Of Fire (I like the cover of the Babys song)
2) For Earth Below
1) Bridge Of Sighs
I need to check out some more of his catalog. Guess I'll know where to start in about 25 minutes! Thanks, Pete!
The last LP that Davey Pattison was on was "The Playful Heart" from 2009. The next 5 LP's after that is when Trower decided to take on the lead vocal role on his Studio recordings. I actually enjoy these albums, but I tend to also listen for a different reason. It's not just because I will always be a diehard Trower fan, but also because I tend to listen to all my favorite guitarists in a "Deep Study Mode" sort of way. I've been a guitarist since `71 and have always had this never ending addiction of listening to music in this manner. ( I know...I need to relax and listen just for pleasures sake. lol!) So for those who may just be curious, this is how I would rank the 5 albums Trower sang on. Not solely because of his vocals, but for the overall music, and of course his ever beautiful, ethereal and soulful guitar work.
1) Somethings About To Change
2) Coming Closer to the Day
3) Roots and Branches
4) Time and Emotion
5) Where Are You Going To
Bridge of sighs
For earth below
Victim of the fury
Worth checking out a track called i want to take you with me from living out of time. Awesome tune from trower.
I’m a huge Trower fan have the whole catalog. Agree with your top three nice that you call out Victims of the Fury. Jimmy Dewar one of the greatest blues rock singers ever right there with Paul Rodgers. Long Misty days is right up there at number four. And of course that mind blowing live album one of the greatest ever. Just saw Robin before the pandemic still incredible. Right in the middle of the top ten greatest players ever.
Pete, I have to agree that I prefer it when Trower has a separate lead singer handling the vocals. Although there are a couple of tracks here and there that Robin did justice to and I truly enjoy his vocal on, like "In My Dream" from the "Go My Way" LP, I know we prefer that someone else handle that role. That being said, you may be pleasantly surprised that he used his long time touring singer and bassist, Richard Watt on his newest LP, "No More Worlds To Conquer". I feel that Richard is largely underrated and I loved his vocals on the "Go My Way" LP.
I was always wondering where he went after that album and why Trower hadn't been using him in the studio for the last 4 or 5 albums he has recently released. His vocal performances on "Into Dust", "Blue For Soul" and "On My Own" are three of my all time favorite songs from Trower, and can all be found on that same "Go My Way" LP. For me it is exciting to know that Trower has decided to hand the vocals over to Richard and I sure hope he continues to do so. The LP debuts today. Let us know what you think about it?
Twice removed is killer, top 3 in my book, with bridge of sighs, and for Earth below, great show as always.
Pour moi son meilleur album est PASSION . Du rock mélodique avec son jeu de guitare 🎸 habituel, beaucoup de feeling.
Les fans de Robin Trower manquent d'ouverture d'esprit
love trower!! so slept on now,
Bridge of Sighs is probably my favorite album of all time, from anybody. James Dewar had the smoothest voice. Pete when you and I were in high school there were not a lot of kids who even knew who Robin Trower was unless they had an older sibling. Your Home Ec buddy was probably listening to Adam Ant.
I agree with your top 5. I discovered Robin Trower when Victims of the fury was released. Terrific album.
Would love to see more solo guitarist album rankings. People like Vai, Malmsteen, Bonamassa, Holdsworth, Moore, just to give examples of what kind of people I’m talking about
As announced, Moore is hopefully coming this week, along with Frank Marino. Holdsworth coming soon, and I have the others on the long list as well.
Holdsworth, for the win. How 'bout Roy Buchanan? John Scofield & Steve Khan are probably too much to hope for. :-0
Saw him in chicago a few years ago, and he was still fantastic.
Procol Harum is my all-time favorite band so needless to say my love for RT is endless. The Harum’s music was not suited to his skill and interests, so what we got is his fabulous solo career. Favorite LP is Bridge of Sighs; a masterpiece. Saw RT at the Fillmore last year. Dude is in his mid 70s but has energy to spare. I agree with Pete that his vocals are far from a strong suit, but he had the brains to begin his solo career with the great James Dewar, who absolutely complimented RT’s style. Really excited to watch your Procol Harum ranking!
Bridge of Sighs Is my favorite
Kronwall no denying that.
Mine too
Bridge of sighs is my favorite, had it on 8 track, vinyl and cd. Back in the day when i first started buying cds bridge of sighs, aqualung, and animals were the first ones i bought.
Izzie Sane my fav album too. I LOVE that intro guitar
