Jay and Silent Bob: An Oral History with Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes | Rotten Tomatoes

- It all began at a New Jersey rec center for Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith, the two men behind Jay and Silent Bob - the foul-mouthed (and also totally silent) Greek Chorus of the View Askewniverse who would eventually move their way to its center. A teenage Smith saw something in the younger Mewes that he loved and thought might connect with moviegoers beyond the Garden State; Mewes found in Smith someone who opened him up good films, great comics, and new dreams. The 1994 film ‘Clerks’ was something of a test for the characters they would inhabit, Jay and Silent Bob - would audiences embrace these weed-dealing oddballs? - and when they passed with flying colors, the duo would become a favorite of movie fans through the 1990s and 2000s, featuring in Smith’s films, headlining their own, and littering Hollywood with cameos . As Mewes and Smith prep for the release of ‘Jay and Silent Bob Reboot,’ which finds them and their characters at a new stage in their lives, we sat down with Mewes and Smith to get deep on Jay and Silent Bob, from life outside the Kwik Stop to the temptations of Hollywood and where the hell “snoochies boochies” came from. 'Jay and Silent Bob Reboot' will release in theaters nationwide on October 15th and 17th!

As a heroin addict of 15 years, clean and sober for 7.....Jason has a hell of a friend in Kevin Smith.
Yeah one of the hardest things for me to stay clean these past 2 and a half (I had a 5 year stint as appose the hell of 15) was having no one who I felt was a real friend. The best thing was getting a few of those people to see me as me again from before the gear use.
Probably the biggest cause of continued addiction (after internal problems) is being ostracised because of the social stigma of the ''Dirty junkie'' stereotype, in a way everyone becomes complicit in your own downfall thanks to not giving a crap about you.

Recovering heroin addict myself. 13 years of use on and off. New-ishly sober. I don’t keep count anymore. I just stay sober one day, one hour, one moment at a time for now. That being said you’re so right about Kevin and Jay. Jay is so incredibly blessed to have a friend who loves and has so much faith in him. I’m so glad he’s doing well and I can’t wait to see the movie 🖤

@@tinayoung2216 Kevin doesn't know how to shut the fuck up, to the point he writes some of the longest monologues in his movies, about comics and Star Wars with filthy language. He didn't want to memorize all of the dialogue while he was also directing, so he made his character silent, originally he was Randall.

Sam Corcoran 16 years ago when I was working at a movie theatre I remember we would tell our guests “nah, don’t look at fandango, those guys are hell bent on trying to make every movie look bad, check Rotten Tomatoes.” And then I feel thats where the dynamic shifted back to fandango reviews are probably more honest now than RT.

The reason why its at 55% on rotten tomatoes is because those who are in charge of rotten tomatoes were infact born in '95-'99 and don't understand what it's like to hang out at a Mall and socialize with other people without them being glued to a iPad or busy finger banging their smart phones.
Does anyone here know how RT works? It's a review aggregate site. It means that 55% of critics gave Mallrats a positive review. Attack the critics for their poor taste, not RT for accurately displaying info.

I'm from South Africa and I sometimes feel my husband and I was the only ones in the country who watched it (my husband by force🙂) but ever so often i find someone from SA who also loves Jay and Silent Bob. Oh and My favorite part of the Movie is the Buffalo Bill part

I'm from Jersey and am always surprised people outside of Jersey love these two as much as we do.
It's so cool to see both of these guys so healthy and to see Jay sober. It would have been tragic to lose either of them to their vices.

@@acetate909 He's clean, but the drugs took an irreversible toll. You can tell he has dentures these days, and once your teeth get pulled, it actually changes the structure of your jaw and skull and the way the soft tissues of your face interact with the bone structure. Plus he's just old, nobody escapes that.
This is why oral history is the most powerful method of interviewing...no one - the interviewer - interrupts the narrative flow and what comes out of it is gold!

I've seen them talk about how they really are opposites in real life and Jason is a really shy and quiet guy and Kevin is the loud one.
@@SBeckerDTD Like Stephen Colbert said the other night, the last time Kevin was on his show, Stephen asked him ONE question and Kevin talked for the WHOLE 12 minutes nonstop without ever actually answering it.
Kevin is the god of speech. It's what he does.
The only time I really see him NOT dominate a conversation is on his podcasts like Fatman On Batman/Fatman Beyond where he and Marc Bernardin genuinely share the spotlight, or Hollywood Babble-On where Ralph kinda takes the lead.
Marc is a fucking GENIUS, and is always saying profound and brilliant shit, so Kevin is kind of always waiting to be blown away by whatever Marc's about to say. Kevin shuts up because of how much he clearly respects Marc and just wants to hear what he has to say.
With Ralph it seems like it's because Ralph is a radio host and is bombastic and commanding of the airspace, and he's always doing impressions. And no matter how gifted at talking Kevin is, it's just easier to watch a force like Ralph do his thing and just go along for the ride.
One of the best duos in Hollywood, so happy to see them back at it.
Jay is my favorite character in every Kevin Smith film he was in... dude has massive charisma.

On the day my son got out of rehab, Jay was doing a show in our town and I took him to see it. My son is 20 years old about to be 21andnI had never let him watch a Kevin Smith movie even though I own several. So his first experience of Jay was live. I told my son if I could get clean and I was a nobody, and Jay could get clean and he was a somebody than he(my son) could get clean too cause to me he's not just anybody he's everything. I appreciate both these guys, they're real people at the end of the day.
"He was a heroin addict and drug addict for fifteen years" Jason proceeds to cringe but takes it. I give him alot of credit for that, I would have been super offended having someone disclose something so personal in an interview.
Maybe because who knows it was mainly common knowledge around fans, and knows hes not that person anymore. But yeah, still feels a little weird hearing it.
Maybe he wants people to know it was tough but he beat it and so can they.
He was clearly very nervous after that and moved a lot around in his chair, clinging to the arm rests and so on. I bet he has always been insecure and this was a big test for him. On the other hand Kevin is probably the only person that can do that to him and in the end Jason comes out a little bit tougher and more secure. Jason, you stole out hearts with what you are, don't be afraid.

When i was younger and strike back first came out people used to tell my friend marc and i that we were like them. I was loud, crass and always lookin to get stoned and flirting with girls. While he was quiet and reserved and ate like a machine lol and always just watched my bullshit unfold. So i eventually just called him lunchbox and it stuck all through highschool til he passed away. I wish he was around for the reboot. Nostalgia can be a mothabitch.

Kevin Smith always makes me nostalgic. I was experiencing the same struggles as Jay during the same time. But I was also young, with good friends and having fun for a lot of that time and we watched and referenced these movies often.
I love these two dudes so much. Their friendship is truly one of a kind. I'm so happy to see Jason is staying sober. .

"Plus, he had a car and drive us everywhere!" Jay just digging Kevin's grave!!! LOL When I was 13 or 14 years old it was cool hanging out with the Juniors as a Freshman in High School. The people I met during my freshman year in High School still, TO THIS DAY. I think about those experiences all the time. We all kind of grew apart, but they were amazing to my coming-of-age.

I'm so happy to hear how Kevin was there for him throughout it all and its great to hear how Jason wanted to get clean himself... that's the hardest step, admitting ur problem... that being said I have loved and laughed at every movie these two have done together or separate...

Love this. Always been a huge Kevin Smith fan... (saw the cartoon series) but there's always been something really truly awesome about the "Jay" character and "Silent Bob" character relationship that you wished you had a friend like that in your life. I'm purposefully separating who Jason Mewes has portrayed because he might not have really started out acting but he ended up acting "Jay" in the subsequent years plus I think sometimes the general public forgets that a person is not the same person they are at 35 that they were at 19 or 24 or 30. I'm really glad that that awesomeness that was Jason Mewes being himself at first changed & grew & survived. It's just impossible for so many people to overcome the addiction but he has himself in a good place. And for all that I am not a comic book collector, I loved them as a kid... a girl kid. But this was before graphic novels were any kind of thing... so I was a book girl. But even the library chick can get addicted to her own prescription painkillers for Fibromyalgia and Crohn's disease. Now, I'm dying from a rare autoimmune disease called Primary Scerlosing Cholangitis which is giving me cirrhosis. I overcame the painkiller issue using CBD oil and using Suboxone when they were getting me off the opioids. I know that eventually I won't have a choice about them when the cirrhosis and pain gets bad enough but until then... you gotta realize that EVERYONE'S dying, but not everyone is actually living. So you live the best life you can... even though you are always paying for maintenance medication for the immunosuppressive therapy, the anticonvulsant nerve drug & the extremely mild muscle relaxer from the almost constant myalgia issues oh & the yearly colonoscopy, ultrasound, and MRCP (type of MRI with injected dye), also required gynecologist & dermatologist visits (the Crohn's meds has a high level of causing cancer in those areas especially besides the kidney), and the required full blood work up 4 times a year- and that's just the maintenance, that's when absolutely nothing is wrong. Excessive stress like RIGHT NOW with the whole horrible COVID-19 actually causes autoimmune diseases to flare up but unless I have a death wish. Just live 100%. Today's my actual 39th birthday & my 16th wedding anniversary. Last year I was too depressed to go out. This year I wanted to hit another escape room then my favorite veal parmigiana with maybe some Italian Limoncello Cream Torte from Cheesecake Factory or some awesome Wally's Bakery Vanilla Buttercream petite fours (been around for over 50 years by a German baker who studied in Vienna and is a top pastry chef who taught his wife and son how to make the best petit fours and run balls & learned how to make a mocha cake for our Filipino dad... miss Mr. Wally, god bless his soul)... but I realized that sadly this year was going to be a bad burfday.Go Mewes and go Smith. I envy your friendship deeply.

I have insanely high hopes for this film because I saw Strike Back during my Freshman year of college. I was in a podunk town with few friends in school and feeling socially outcast from the frat/sority party scene of a party school in nowhere Texas. I went to the theatre with two friends and for an hour and a half LAUGHED straight. I always said, it's not the FUNNIEST movie, but I never stopped laughing from credits to credits. Not every joke lands, but Mewes is so entertaining that he can make anything funny.
I just wish they were doing a traditional release rather than just the 2 day thing and a tour. Granted, it would be awesome to actually watch the movie with these 2 but I'm willing to bet the tickets would be super expensive.

I’m incredibly proud of these two. I can’t wait to see the double feature on Thursday with my BF!!
I just love that we (I) have gotten to watch the friendship of these two grow on film!!
