As a musician and musicologist I can tell you playing an instrument and doing music helps a lot to understand music. I remember when I learnt ryhtmn as a child while playing guitar. At first It was really tough and I never understood how other musicians struck the guitar until some day it just clicked in my head and I got it. Since then my hands just move fluently and I don't even know or "understand" what is happening anymore :D. I think that is common to dancers too. As a musicologist I can tell you there are no humans with "no ryhtmn" it's just a natural thing inside us we have to explore. :D Great video for beginners by the way. As a musician I would explain it the same way. :)
i was part of a marching band before i started dancing, and we were required to learn to read music. Specifically, COUNTING the beats of the music. And must i say it helped out a lot when i finally got to choreographing and really just catching the beat when i was dancing. When you learn to read music, you'll learn about time scores, quarter notes, half notes, eight notes, etc. You also learn about accents and off beats that tell you how hard hitting a note is or soft( which can be used for based sounds or lite "ka"/ snares/hit sounds) and things like that so it can be a great introduction if you really want to get into utizilizing counts and sounds in your dancing so your musicality level as a whole will improve and you can choreograph better.
Do you know any good tutorial to learn? Or a website, I've been dancing for a while and I really want to learn how to count but none of the videos I've found have been specific enough
Don't you hate it when you want to learn something but your brain says no so you force yourself to try and learn it and on the bigilionth time you get it?
Wooaahh I already know how to count from piano but this was still so helpful! In addition tho, when there are those 3 beats (like at 3:29 when Jessie says 8 e &), those are actually not part of the 4 counts within a beat. They're called triplets that divide the beat into 3 even sections. In piano we said them as 1 & a, 2 & a, 3 & a, etc. But overall, really REALLY helpful video! And btw we love you Clay 😊
Exactly ... ballet popularized the 8 count, but really counting in 4:4 for 4:4 music makes sense for other styles ... unless the specific accent pattern your hitting goes for the length of 2 bars, it’s a little misleading / unnatural to use the 8 count for other dance styles...
The way they counted was confusing, I was thinking triplets as well. Haha. I think these counts are more guided towards beginners that have not studied music.
Actually I'm pretty sure those are part of the 4 count, because you can squeeze a 4th count in there (just say "8 e & a" and you'll find that it matches the beats, just the "a" is silent). Triplets would be a little slower
As a hardcore music theory student, I didn't pick up "syncopation" until a few years in. Basics can take a bit in practice. Yet, you guys are teaching it to dancers. I still remember an old dance instructor of mine who was actually legendary at separating the sounds of a song. He would have us do this exercise often where he told us to hit basses with one hand and snairs with the other, and while doing so, he would play progressively harder songs. I could hit the basses AND the snairs, but separating them was so difficult for me. Yet, he made it look easy. Even though he doesn't teach dance anymore, I still do this exercise all the time when listening to music. Car radio, in the store, showering, doesn't matter. You got this and to share with my experience, I would just watch people dancing through youtube or Instagram, whether be choreography, freestyle or battle. Be active and observe which move that you like and think of how it suits your style. Then, copy that one move you like into practice and repetition until you're comfortable. The more you do this process, you're building a foundation of yourself and your style. If you want to further progress, I would recommend going to dance classes whether to be a dance studio near you or STEEZY and go in for a class. This lets you be more aware of your body movement, how you can take those classes and apply to yourself when doing choreography or freestyling. This is pretty much it for my dance experience and wishes you all the best for your dancing journey .

Guys you’re unreal! I’m a professional ballroom Latin coach and choreographer and u nailed it! You made the video so easy to follow along to and so simple to understand which is a sign of unbelievably talented coaches. I couldn’t be more impressed with your channel! AMAZING!! 😄😄😄
A must video for zouk dancer!! I been demoralized not getting timing right. This helps clarify crux of the issue. Would love to see more video like this with music breakdown on variations in zouk song BPM and rhythm. Another one 🙏🏼
Djs count in the chunks of 4 which might be helpful here as well to keep the track of phrasings and bars. 1,2,3,4 - 2,2,3,4 - 3,2,3,4 - 4,2,3,4 and coming back to the 1. As the new phrase. This pattern will help you guys out a little better as you don't have to go to the lengths of 8 which might in some cases be confusing. If it's harder to catch the rhythm in faster bpms you can halftime the track as in if the track is in 160bpm halftime would be 80 from where you can pick up patterns you might have been missing out on if it were on the original BPM. I am no dancer, just a music producer. Stumbled here because RUclips recommend. I hope this helps.
Honestly this explains so much. I remember trying to find the beat on my own and got confused when I heard quarter and half counts. I'm so glad I know what that was now. Also how I would always get corrected when I was following the steps too quickly in latin dance but could have sworn I was on beat lol

As a dancer, this is my biggest challenge. To figure out the music in so much detail. Especially when it gets blurry as soon as the lyrics pop up. This is because i emulse myself into the music as soon as i hear it, that i cannot stay attentive to a certain rhythm or sound. Its basically like asking someone to take drugs and just as it kicks in you tell them to stay completely attentive and focused. Like damn, its hard. Because as a dancer, you have a habit of getting lost in the melody, not to hold it by the neck and do an analysis of the entire musical body.
Wow, thank you guys for such brilliant breakdown, it is cool how you are able to present such a tricky theory in a such vivid and entertaining manner, providing examples, do more such educational videos pls
I’ve just started to dance during quarantine and I skipped all this counting stuff cause I thought it was hard but now I’m watching this video and remembering that I played instruments so it’s so easy🤧
I find this so fascinating. As a singer, I break down music into counts of four rather than counts of eight. I can recognize the counts in music fairly well, but it's super instinctual. Unless there isn't an obvious musical cue to mark where I start singing, I don't count myself in when I sing. Similarly, I know there are certain musical beats that I need to stop or start on when I sing, but really the rest is very fluid and isn't strictly tied down to the counts unless I'm singing choir and have to match up with the rest of the group. Now that I'm starting to take up dance on my own, it's really interesting to see how singing and dancing differ, despite both being so closely tied to music.
Omgsh Im subscribed!!!! I’m subscribed!! I already love you guys. I want to learn how to dance with understanding the necessary tools to help free my mind and body.
Hey ! Count starts from the top only but your choreography May differ it depends on choreographer whether they are starting from 1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8 or any half counts or quarter counts.
Ah I'm struggling with the count. At least you said that it takes a long time for you to count. So, I shouldn't be so hard on myself. I'm not that fast learner. Thank you for this video. xoxo
Im a dancer who is absolutely BLIND when it comes to counts in music. I’m trying hard to learn because it’s SO important. I’m becoming an assistant teacher soon and I really need to learn how to count music so that I can count students in and help them with choreography
I don't think 3:56 is a triplet like some commenters are saying. You can fit a 4th beat in there, just try saying "8 e & a" and you'll find that it fits the same beats as the high hats, but the last one is silent. A triplet would be slightly slower. Not all 3-beat patterns are triplets
Hello STEEZY! I am a big fan of your channel! I am a self taught dancer and these videos help us dancers who learn dance on our own. I have a long way to go from my goal as a dancer. Can you do a video about dancers that dance without counts? I know this might sound weird, but I rarely if not, use counts. I usually look at a whole choreography, and if there are no tutorials, I learn it by watching and listening to the music, then time the moves to how it is danced. I also breakdown the moves on my own, that’s why I am like learning then teaching it to myself (if that makes sense). Anyway I hope this gets acknowledged, also is it good learning dance without counts? I hope I get noticed, even so… I love your videos please keep making more of these tips and how to’s, it really helps us a lot! Love ❤️ from the Philippines!

Clay's woah is amazing💕🌋🌋🌋😂👌👌😍😘😊I love ittt

Nicccce!! This is really helpful for those into intricate dances like Salsa where timing moves with specific beats is crucial. Thank you!!
Yes!! Finally a video that teaches you how to actually count.
If im being honest I have no clue how to count the beat of the second song anyone here can help?
I have a question do you start the count where you’re starting choreo or do you start from the beginning
Hey ! Count starts from the top only but your choreography May differ it depends on choreographer whether they are starting from 1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8 or any half counts or quarter counts.
Wildly informative and easy to understand, thanks y'all!
This really helped me and you guys are so happy and fun I love it ! 💖💖love you so much!🙏🏽
Thanks guys! Super helpful. You r the best
I am teaching my very first workshop tomorrow with a friend and I cannot thank you guys enough for making this video T.T
Ah I'm struggling with the count. At least you said that it takes a long time for you to count. So, I shouldn't be so hard on myself. I'm not that fast learner. Thank you for this video. xoxo
Please you know a good tutorial? I've seen a few but none specific enough🙏🤧

Im a dancer who is absolutely BLIND when it comes to counts in music. I’m trying hard to learn because it’s SO important. I’m becoming an assistant teacher soon and I really need to learn how to count music so that I can count students in and help them with choreography
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO! YOU GUYS ROCK
I was waiting forever for this video
Thank you sooo much for this video. I really needed it.
Thank you it’s finally dawned on me how count it out and levels
This video is fantastic! Going to use this in my PE class to teach counts for our dance unit :D
VERY HELPFUL!!! I LOVE YOU GUYS
Love this!!!
I like the way you dance (the guy). You do it in a dramatic way.
I don't think 3:56 is a triplet like some commenters are saying. You can fit a 4th beat in there, just try saying "8 e & a" and you'll find that it fits the same beats as the high hats, but the last one is silent. A triplet would be slightly slower. Not all 3-beat patterns are triplets
you’re for sure right about 3:56. i believe the other commenters are talking about the triplet at 4:57
@@ashleyg.. oh I see, the first comment I saw mentioned the timestamp 3:29 so that's the one I thought people were talking about
Excelente aula! Abraços do Brasil! 😃💯🇧🇷
My man hit that whoa🔥
Thank you so much for sharing this, i finally feel less alone
This is so good...i need to focus on sounds n bass n high hats...n just beats...i listen to alot of songs beats...cuz dancers listen to music different...i need to start doing this...
Thanks for this content ♥️
Make a lot of fun to hear you guys!
