  • In this video, we put the Hawaiian custom 13' rod to the test next to the 10'7" version with the same rating of 1/2oz-2oz to see which one casts father and which one we prefer. interesting results and surprise catch!

    The reason why these rods are so long is because we use them primarily to target Menpachi here in Hawaii. Not only does it cast far, but the long length helps bring the fish up the cliff/rocks without the line and fish getting busted.

      When I was a kid (during the dinosaur age) my uncle was able to get us on the docks at Ala Moana at night. We'd set up a lantern on the dock and the water would just turn red. A short ten cent bamboo pole, line and a hook (no bait) and we would take home bags of Menpachi.

    The massive surge of water pushed a load of stripers down the Salinas River. Huge schools of the smaller hybrid variety striped bass in he 18-24 inch range will be in the surf this year and certainly welcome after two years of very slow striper action in the Monterey bay region. Very nice job on the striper art work

    Dude those gyotakus are coming out amazing man! The striped bass one looks awesome bro. Looks like the 13 footer did pretty well! It definitely has its pros and cons especially with the fatigue from casting all day. Your casts were super consistent. If your priority is to maximize casting distance the 13 might be the move. Awesome vid Edward

    Have you tried the 14ft HCS? It was requested by Tokunaga's on the Big Isle for shore based anglers to reach the Akule schools at night in the middle of deep-draft harbors of Hilo & Kona. Okuma sent me some of the earlier prototypes. As you'd guess they are heavier but the distance was WOW. Had to position yourself so your back was towards the wind to maximize your distance. Had a young kid there that makes good money using that rod. He bikes in at dusk to fish for Akule using that rod w/an insulated fish backpack. He sent me pics of an average night. Quite impressive! Makes roughly $150-200 a night selling the fish wholesale to stores & gets paid in cash. His overhead is near non-existent. I give that young man props.

      That’s amazing for that young man! Super stoked for him. Haven’t tried the 14 yet. Might not need that in our area unless we’re fishing for rock fish bait and wait. Going to try the okuma rockaway SP next. The 10ft and the 11ft

      @@Hook2Cook The longer lengths feel slightly flimsy as John designed them for CA Perching (on the lighter end). Still she goes though. I still prefer the 8’6” as a good all around length. For the money and the rod’s strength hard to beat the Nesikas. Suppose to use the same blanks as the Rocks but different componentry. But to me the Nesikas feel way different. Not as delicate but beefier. I’ve stopped using my Rocks and SP and only use Nesikas. I high sticked sharks and stingrays at night just to see if they could take it. They did. Even held a .+20lb GT. I was even electrocuted using the 12ft during a lightning storm fighting the GT. True story. Just before the Izuo Brothers trade show. Lost partial vision and kept stumbling for a few minutes. My cam was fritzing. My friend took me in to see the base doctor. Was forced to spend the day there while the MP’s got the gear for me. Got most of the fight before the flash. Have you tried the Nesikas? Like Rockaways on steroids.

    For The last few years I have been learning to surf fish. I always wished I could cast longer distances with LC110. My current setup is Okuma SST 9.6 with Shimano Vanford 5000 which I think is the perfect setup. The combined rod and reel weight is less than 1 pound. I have ordered and tested at least 50 different types of minnow lures and I came to a conclusion you can cast so much with current LC110 design. The best design minnow lure so far I found is 90mm (3.5 inches) 14 gram (½ oz) slow sinking minnow lure where the minnow lip is swingable. The minnow lip swings parallel to the minnow body preventing air resistance and moves back to 45 deg angle when retrieved. This thing casts like a Kastmaster. I have also ordered a 15 feet telescopic fishing rod. This is used for rock fishing in Korea but I want to see if it works at the surf. It's a kind of expansive rod but it only weighs 200 grams (7 oz). My guess is this 15 ft rod is not going to be cast longer than Okuma SST 9.6 but at least it's just as light as Okuma SST 9.6. As always you are always on the innovative side of surf fishing. Thanks to your channel I learned a lot from you.

    Have you ever surf fished with a Heddon Zara Spook lure? My grandfather(RIP) had a friend (back in the '80's) who use to use a blue one to catch stripers off the beach. I just bought a 12' rod and a Diawa BS4500 reel to see if I can catch stripers with the spooks.

    Distance not so much. Avoiding the higher waves knocking your line in water may be worth the extra cost. Up towards SF and above high waves in surf are an issue. Fun test to see.

    Experiment bought a new rod. It's something different ~ it's got some features all to itself. It does on paper match the Okuma in fact tested over 2oz. I can really load on a cast it's a Dark matter OB. I will see one day only if they drop the price as it is. So I bought one. Been evaluated only bad the price.

    Hey there,… you had mentioned the 10’ rod was easier on you arm than the 13’ rod …. If you didn’t know … the hand on the butt section should be pulling and not so much pushing with the other hand and arm… much more distance with said method …. I swing a 12’ heavy fast action heaver most of the time
    Pull…! Don’t push…. This will increase your distance significantly …!!!

We all want more, 10 more feet or 10 more yards or.....thus your trails at the end if this vid. However I was disappointed that you did not accurately measure (the distance) of your casts with the lighter (5/8 oz.) jerk bait. Please reply.

    Thinking to the big Vanford to pair this with the OB stands for open beach and it has the shortest butt of all and appears medium action as it loads 50% points. The Okuma Rockaway I own as well as another very handsome rod the Phenix I don't own the seller dropped the price a few dollars less than the 903 I was eyeing but with the action and short butt this is a different style 10 feet about 1 pound rigged and spooled will see.😀

    Cool video! I have the same 13ft rod and it is not worth the extra weight for casting LC or Calisa. The Vanstall VR75/50 are so light that the rod feels top heavy. Using a BG4000 reel makes the rod feel more balanced when casting. The 13ft is great if you are fishing off rocks/jetty though to pick up your lures before they hit the rocks or get caught in kelp. Please do a casting distance comparison video between your Trifects lite 10 and Hawaiian 10.

    • @Hook2Cook
      @Hook2Cook  Год назад +1

      Maybe but the okuma 10’7 definitely outcasts the trifecta lite. The fact it can cast the 2oz makes it a no brainer at almost half the price
