@@Hook2Cook yes that’s the rod that I was working on but that was the first prototype and I made some few adjustments and after few more prototypes, I finally came out with the one I really like. Hopefully you’ll like the rod

@@whiterangerrr I have thrown 2 oz on the Acculite, but I typically use 1 oz. I have a beefier Ugly Stick that I use when I want to throw 2 or 3 oz. The Ugly Stick was terrible with the lighter 5/8 oz jerk baits like the Calissa.
I got the G Loomis ultralight salmon steelhead 9.6 ft . Line 4 Lb - 8 Lb Lure: 1/16 - 3/8 . Landed a few legal size halibut with lucky craft from the beach.
First time coming across the videos I appreciate all your help and also the fact that you were humble in your ways of teaching speaks volumes. The rod when casting there’s like a trebuchet catapulting that lure.

I am planning going to shoreline in Long Beach for halibut income spring. Since you caught sea perch with x11, can you advice if I need to buy like 7’2” rod for shoreline fishing as I saw RUclipsr used on jerk bait. Thanks
I have 30 rods and reels give or take. I can outcast all of them with a 6'6" medium action, 8-20 lb. Ugly Stik I picked up for 20 bucks on clearance. I have expensive surf rods, and other than the angle, they suck. Surf perch are 50' out anyway and a 7.3 to 1 baitcaster absolutely smokes slow spinning reels. Yessir! As long as you’re using these techniques. The rod at the end sounds like it could be the best in terms of variety of applications for one rod. The first two are pretty much good for jerkbaits
I got the trifecta lite 903 literally today ordered it from Phenix themselves haven’t used it yet but I plan on making it my surf setup for perch, halibut and striper on top of salmon/steelhead.
The weather has been pretty good for surf fishing at Ocean beach SF these past several days…. I use a Lamiglas x-11 10’ 6” salmon / steelhead conventional rod w/ Piscifun Alijoz… 30lb. braid …. It’s like a mini surf rod… I can heave everything you mentioned a lot further than a spinning rig… if you’re using any salmon/ steelhead rod .. it should be able to handle any fish at the beach in our surrounding area
Agreed! With enough line capacity, you can wear out the toughest of fish around here in case you. Snag a ray or something 😜. Brought in 2 big rays using a 3000 series ruclips.net/video/YfRsOOfRp5k/видео.html
Great content, enjoy watching all of your videos. Truly appreciate the wide variety of fishing methods and product reviews your channel provides! Looking to upgrade rod and reel very soon! Was able to get my hands on the Trifecta Lite 903 with the intention of only throwing the calissa 110. I have no doubt after watching some of your videos and others posted that the Trifecta Lite can handle large striped bass and slab perch. My concern is how the rod will preform on the North Coast.. wave power seems to be a bit stronger, concerned this will decrease rod sensitivity and lead to potential damage of the rod itself. Any input in that regard? Any further suggestions on a reel that would complete this set up? Tried lots of reel combos and the foot of the reels doesn’t fit the insert of the trifecta lite, a bit concerning. Had my eyes on a Diawa Vanford 4000 any thoughts?
Edward, I just scored a Phoenix Trifecta lite ML 1003. Can you recommend a few reels that would work best for that rod. I would prefer a 4000 for cast-ability.

Thank you for your videos. How far can you throw the calissa? Wondering if I should change to briad. Also can you throw your baitcaster as far as your spinning setup? Thanks
average cast is maybe 30 yards. no wind, great conditions maybe 60 yards. Give braid a try. you wont go back. I used to throw baitcasters in the surf, but too many issues in that rough environment.
Not enough benefits to justify the downside if you snap your leader and happen to need to go all braid, it’ll be unnatural. It’s not like you need a strike indicator or be ultra precise out there. Unless you’re going for a super finicky fish in calm water and need to keep an eye on your line go green.
A few questions.....I am sure with a more finesse rod the Calissa and similar lures will cast further than a heavier rod - Correct? Approx how far do you think the Calissa can be cast with that Okuma? (just a rough estimate)......the Okuma you recommended is rated 1/4 - 1/2 oz lure ....the Calissa is 5/8 oz.....that is over the specs. Will that over stress the rod over time? Would that Okuma Celilo hold up with a light weight Carolina rig and would a Carolina rig that light be effective in the surf? Can you please post a link to the website you recommended with the wave strength forecast? Ed, thank you for your channel it has certainly brought me up to speed in surf fishing.
the okuma celilo 9' 6 is perfect. if set up right with a 3-4000 reel 30# braid 30 yards average cast. and no, dont carolina rig as it will weaken over time
Awesome video! Do you find the Trifecta lite 903 to be tip heavy with the reel or is it balanced? I've tried lesser expensive rods from other manufacturers in the 9ft range and they are super tip heavy..... hard to fish for hours without tiring out.
The trifecta lite series is probably the best balanced rod you can find. The Achilles heal of that rod is the small lure weight options. Most of them have a half ounce range so they’re very specific. Ie: the 1003ml everyone wants only casts 1/4-3/4 ounce. But if you know you’re only throwing the 110 all day, it’s a nice rod
@@Hook2Cook Thanks for your response. Just ordered the 902, 903 & 904. I live in the northeast so I'd like to use these both on the CT coast but also in the rivers for smallmouth etc. I think I'm most excited to get the 902 just because I'll be probably using that most often.
I thought I would mention a rod that cast the 5/8 lures great, can use the Carolina rig up to a 2 1/2oz weight and it is at a budget price. The Okuma Rockaway 11' medium/fast, the lure rating is 3/4 to 3oz it's a great rod. The cost is right around $90.00. Have you checked out this rod?
leader with an FG knot using 20-30LB fluorocarbon. reason is going straight braid wouldn't be good near structure also its stiff so fouling up on the treble hooks is very rare. also in case fish are line shy- of course a leader is less visible
@@Hook2Cook okay cool that’s what I remember from another video. Just thought you changed it up for some reason, since it wasn’t mentioned (unless I missed it).
Yo thanks for all your posts! I just recently started to become successful in my surf fishing adventures thanks to your advice videos! I have one question for you. I want to upgrade my rod set up but I have a 5000 and 6000 reel that I've been using for surf fishing that I also use for kayak fishing. Would I be okay pairing one of those with 30lb braid and a medium/light salmon steelhead rod?
Good morning, I just purchased the Phenix Trifecta Light Model# TRL-S 904MH-2 9′0″ 2 8-15 lb Fast 1/2 - 1 oz., What is the best size Shimano Reel should I use ?
If you can find a 3500 series that’s really the sweet spot on most reels for this application. A 4000 shimano nasci is a good choice since it’s very light
I bet a Wisker Seekers 9' 6"" Catfish Rod Would be Ideal. The Medium, can handle 3 oz , and Med Heavy 6oz. , their line rating goes to 50 lb. They are Tough , lightweight Rods. I seriously think they would work just fine.
I have a 10.5 OKUMA SST rod, a medium/light, that's even better than the Celilo, which is also an OKUMA product. This ain't no meat rod, and I use it for Pink Salmon, and Kokanee, up here in Washington State, as well as redtails along the Coast, on light surf/wind days. On heavier surf days, a Rockaway 11', and a medium/heavy 10.5, EMCAST, rated up to 30 ib. test, and up to 6 oz. casting weight, gets the job done. I use 3,000 -5,000 open faced spinning reels. I have owned Celilo's, used them for Coho Salmon. Good rods. Too light for Kings, or Chums, both pretty powerful fish.
In some of your video's guys loose their lure casting.....what is the cause......worn line, twisted line, bad casting technique? Seems with the strength of braid the lure should not break off.
The lesson learned here is cheap rods and reels catch fish. Expensive rods and reels catch anglers. I do have a Megabass Shadow Pangea with a Stella which caught me for $1.5K. My Celilo and BassPro Fish Eagle rods have been catching all the fish.
Hey,… there’s shame in using a Carolina rig…. if the fish are down lower … it is what it is …. Just like fishing for largemouth … got to do the change up…. 🤙😎👍

Can you cast far the 110s with the cicada ?
Is there a noticeable difference Tri 903Ml and the 904MH i don’t know which to choose?
Awesome video Edward! Going on line to find that rod. How well will that rod do on striper? I'm sure it'll hang tough. Thanks again brotha! 👍🏼🙏🏼
It should. forgot to mention. Jun came to visit last year and he brought the prototype with him. very similar to an ODM rod.
@@Hook2Cook Cool! Getting it for sure! POWERRRR!!🎣
Trifecta lite is categorized by Phenix as freshwater rod. Any issues using them in the saltwater?
Nope, going on 2 full years of use this March. Lots of trips no issues
Appreciate the reply. That’s one of the rod on my list but wasn’t sure if it’ll last in saltwater_Thanks!
Is the 10 foot ML good too ??
Yessir
What was the name of the rod in the specifications to look for. Got the expensive one but the cheaper one. And what real would you recommend.
Okuma celilo. 9’6” this one, amzn.to/3AHQJ6x
Whats the reel you have on your rod
Van staal vr50
I thought I would mention a rod that cast the 5/8 lures great, can use the Carolina rig up to a 2 1/2oz weight and it is at a budget price. The Okuma Rockaway 11' medium/fast, the lure rating is 3/4 to 3oz it's a great rod. The cost is right around $90.00. Have you checked out this rod?
Yes in this video ruclips.net/video/iX6qAg2DKX0/видео.html
Let's go fishing bro love your videos I love surf perch fishing
Glad you like them!
Do you tie a leader or go straight braid tying the calissa?
leader with an FG knot using 20-30LB fluorocarbon. reason is going straight braid wouldn't be good near structure also its stiff so fouling up on the treble hooks is very rare. also in case fish are line shy- of course a leader is less visible
@@Hook2Cook okay cool that’s what I remember from another video. Just thought you changed it up for some reason, since it wasn’t mentioned (unless I missed it).
No I didn’t mention it in this one. Lots to cover for sure!
What is a Kalisa Fish?
It is a type of lure Calissa 110 that Ed sell on his page
What reel are you using on that rod
Van staal vr50
Yo thanks for all your posts! I just recently started to become successful in my surf fishing adventures thanks to your advice videos! I have one question for you. I want to upgrade my rod set up but I have a 5000 and 6000 reel that I've been using for surf fishing that I also use for kayak fishing. Would I be okay pairing one of those with 30lb braid and a medium/light salmon steelhead rod?
Thanks! The smaller and lighter the better but that 5000 series could work if it’s light enough. What model is the 5000 series?
@@Hook2Cook it’s an offshore angler tight line by bass pro. What is the benefit of a smaller reel?
Good morning, I just purchased the Phenix Trifecta Light Model# TRL-S 904MH-2 9′0″ 2 8-15 lb Fast 1/2 - 1 oz., What is the best size Shimano Reel should I
use ?
Nasci 4000
@@Hook2Cook thank you for the info!🤙
I just bought a phenix trifecta lite. I’m not sure what reel to go for. Any suggestions? 3000 or 3500 reel?
If you can find a 3500 series that’s really the sweet spot on most reels for this application. A 4000 shimano nasci is a good choice since it’s very light
@@Hook2Cook Thank you for the suggestion. I’m looking at 3500 but I’ll take a look at the 4000 Shimano nasci. Thanks again.
I run a 4000 stratic and love it. I've also used a BG 3500 for a while. Both sizes are great options.
Thanks. I went with a Van Staal VR75B.
Cool now I can go to BTCT and pester Mark.
lol. tell him Hook2cook sent you to do so
I like the pole. It’s a fresh water pole though and requires maintenance after fishing.
What’s the name of the reel? 3500 something. Thanks
it's the Quantum Reliance 3500 amzn.to/348vJtC
I clicked on the link you sent me, but it has different size reels which one do you recommend?
The 35
I bet a Wisker Seekers 9' 6"" Catfish Rod Would be Ideal.
Thanks for sharing! Sounds like you got it all covered!
Why not a Medium power rod?
The softer rod let’s you load up on your 1/2oz baits also keeps the trebles pinned in case you don’t get a good hookset
Dropping down in braid size like 15-20 lb will definitely increase casting distance.....🤙
Theoretically yes. but Knowing you have 30# gives you the confidence to give it a really hard rip. Snapping 20# on a bad cast is really easy to do
@@Hook2Cook I guess, I know guys who rip it hard on 10/12lb all the time and rarely have any problems.
In some of your video's guys loose their lure casting.....what is the cause......worn line, twisted line, bad casting technique? Seems with the strength of braid the lure should not break off.
Let's go to pismo
Can we meet and greet and fish surf perch
He he. You said butt section. 😆
🤭
The lesson learned here is cheap rods and reels catch fish. Expensive rods and reels catch anglers. I do have a Megabass Shadow Pangea with a Stella which caught me for $1.5K. My Celilo and BassPro Fish Eagle rods have been catching all the fish.
haha love it. That setup caught you!
Hey,… there’s shame in using a Carolina rig…. if the fish are down lower … it is what it is …. Just like fishing for largemouth … got to do the change up….
🤙😎👍
