Agreed, yet be careful what you wish for , for it might appear in front of you and make your wishes come true or just bite you leg of and dissappear into another dimension . That was its evil relative that showed up because the original fish was far away from its magical phone so its relative answered you call instead. ..be careful lol
I mean... when he left, he wasn't doing anything around the house to help her. He was just one more mouth to feed. She probably has less work with him gone.
How strange... In this tale, the lazy boy gets rewarded, despite his laziness and horrible attitude towards his widowed mother, because he has a "good heart"... whereas in "The Diligent Girl And The Lazy Girl", the lazy girl gets punished, even though she didn't do anything as awful as how the boy behaved.
The moral of the story is that you only get what you want if you actually overcome your laziness. Boy woulda never seen that fish if he didn't go to the river and stuff.
At least, in the Russian/Polish version, the mama has two other sons to do the work and the princess became in love with the guy instead of just pregnant. Also, the lazy boy makes the stove gallop like a horse and bring him to the king because he's too lazy to walk there.
Honestly the way he keeps announcing his laziness almost makes in seem like he isn't actually lazy but chooses not to work for the people who insulted him. Like he wasn't "lazy" until he got annoyed enough with people calling him that. A "you think I'm lazy, so I'll show you lazy" deal. And it suited him just fine because it frankly only benefitted him. Of course that's not the intention, but it is the presentation
I think they could've empathised his kindness abit more for that ending since the story of the diligent girl and lazy girl had the lazy one get covered in blood.
Laziness is not equal evil or bad, unless you are more demanding towards others than yourself. If someone is lazy but demands nothing from anyone, it's simply the way of his/hers. If someone is lazy but demands much from others, then that person is probably called a politician or CEO of some big company ... lol sad truth of our world. Never too late to change it tho! Let me grab my pitchfork and torches...
DA MotoNeko in the "Diligent girl and the Lazy girl" though, the lazy girl didn't do ANYTHING. Whereas, the lazy boy actually did what others asked him after a bit of persuading.
Reminds me of a Filipino folktale called Juan Tamad (Juan/John Lazy). Only Juan lies under a tree with his mouth opened, waiting for a fruit to drop into his mouth from the tree and they say that until now, he's still waiting beneath that tree.
we have that folktale in Moldova (and Romania) too! he waited for a blackberry to fall (because it rhymed with the word 'mouth' in romanian) and the moral was that waiting for good things to happen wont bring you anywhere.
Is that why they call it beauty rest? Because his lashes were rivaled by no one, not even the princess! Jack woke up first thing in the morning with eyebrows on fleek.
Real moral of the story is that he was truly a lazy man. But just because he was lazy didn't mean he didn't have a good heart. It was more like he had a condition.
Theres a turkish variation of this story. So king askes her 3 daughters to deliver a watermelon, elder and middle one gave him the bestest watermelons, and little one gaves him a watermelon which is not grown enough. So king becomes angry, and punishes her by marrying her with the laziest man in the kingdom. Every man comes to the palace to prove he is the laziest, but there is also a man like lazy jack, and his mother thinks at least he can marry her and she delivers him to the kings palace. King decides he is the laziest then marry him with the princess. When they are married, some bad things happen and princess is trapped in somewhere. So in order to save her, lazy jack becomes a hardworking man and saves her by defeating the trapper. Then king understands why she gave him a not grown fruit, it is because everything can become valuable and great if you work on them. And lazy jack becomes the mkst hardworking man in all the kingdom
This must be the world's worst lesson for kids. Be lazy, and find a magical fish. I'm just glad the Princess is happy in the end. And presumably, his mother.
I love how they portrayed the lazy man. The moral is that even if a person is lazy that does not mean that the person is a bad person(self centered etc) and it shows that a little bit of goodness can rain down upon blessings.❤ Our version of this story is very disappointing. In the story the lazy man died because he was too lazy to pick a fruit from the tree and waited for the fruit to fall on to his mouth. The moral was indeed there but as a child, I though it was way too brutal and it's like teaching kids not to be lazy or else you'll die.
The moral of the story is that you only get what you want if you actually overcome your laziness. Boy woulda never seen that fish if he didn't go to the river and stuff.
He still kept being lazy afterwards, so I think it might not necessary be that. He also did not care about the princess laughing at him for idling. I'd argue it's more about not just being busy for the sake of being busy, but enjoying life, being kind, and focusing on the work that really matters.
A baby from a virgin? That boy is like Jesus. Kind of a backwards type of moral... sure Janko was honest and stuff, but unless you save a magical fish you won't really get by in the world. Guess this was more of an 'entertainment' type of story rather than a 'lesson' one.
I think the idea is that a single man is never going to do more than the bare minimum for survival unless a woman inspires him to do so whether that's his mother or his wife. Just spitballing here.
I think the lesson here is that Janko was lazy but he was a good person and he did someone a favor, so that someone helped him out despite being lazy. There's alot of lazy people who have it good and it's because they had connections.
tangy tablets He didn't seem to have too much of a problem though. I mean, if it took a whole day to wake him up, surely he just didn't care much. And he wasn't completely lazy.
This one is ATU 675, "The Wish Fish". Because apparently idiot boys who wish for anything and magically knock up princesses is an actual folktale trope. Other tales of this type include Hans Dumb/Simple Hans (collected by the Brothers Grimm), and Peruonto (collected by Giambattista Basile.) IIRC there's also a Danish version.
I’ve seen people refer to these stories by seemingly random letters and numbers in another comment section. Is there some universal cataloging system for folk tales? If so I want to know about it.
The Lazy Boy ends with the lazy boy getting a princess and a palace. The Diligent Girl and the Lazy Girl ends with the lazy girl covered in dirt and blood.
Because lazy boy still did good deeds while the Lazy girl ,from the Diligent Girl and the Lazy Girl, did no good deeds at all... Even if one is lazy, at least do good when the moment arises and lazy boy still did work when told of him and necessary.
The lazy girl, in the longer version of the tale is also exposed as having been an azzhole to the diligent girl and her father. And the dub isn't the greatest thing either. So take everything with a grain of salt please.
I don't get the moral of the story. Anime hair dude who probably has narcolepsy with how often he sleeps is so lazy he can't even father his own child, he has a magical fish do it for him. And then he gets a giant castle and lives happily ever after??
“I would gladly go, if only I weren’t so very lazy!” I don’t know if I’d smack him for his smart ass response or...no, I’d smack him for his smart ass response XD
Very similar to the Russian fairy tale about Emelya and pike. Only Ivan fell in love with the Princess, and she fell into a depression because she loves, and does not know who. In the end, they ride on the oven
Similar russian tale I know continues by princess being ashamed with her husband, So lazy boy wishes to ve less lazy so no one shall be ashamed of him. When the wish is granted, he reliaze all he could wish for he can do by himself and release fish from its promise.
Wow. Give the child an apple and watch to see which man he gives it to- that's the father. To think Jerry Springer and Maury have been doing it the hard way.
maybe the moralof the story is when we finaly stand for our laziness even for a simple thing like take water from the river, we will be rewarded. imagine that we're not being lazy, how many we'll get?

lazy man commands fish to impregnate princess
Literally 😂
Rape by fish
because lazy Janko was to lazy to do it himself
Wtaf
I will think the moral is you're never too lazy to get offended by someone. He didn't even need half can second to make that second wish.
“Mommy, where do babies come from?”
“Well dear, lazy men command fishes to send babies into their mommy's tummy.”
Oddly enough, that's still more accurate than the popular stork delivery explanation.
That's like... exactly how it happens

- Don't work hard unless you have to.
- Know the right people, and you will go far.

Not all folk tales have morals to teach. In fact, the majority of folk tales are retold simply for their entertainment.
Yeah but he's a boy, so he is forgiven for being lazy because he's a 'nice guy, actually'. Girls can't be lazy.
Maybe it's Peta propaganda about being nice with animals 🙊
this fairy tale strikes me as a petition to a boy who will one day have power over you, but is a little shit. gotta treat it gingerly.

@There's No Big Lie The story of a lazy man by Ion Creanga
As a romanian,I can confirm.
