23:57 As a Japan railfan, some stuff to clarify: There are WAY MORE than 2 train companies in Japan, even within the JR system (similar to National Rail), not to mention the private companies. What I think Connor is trying to say is that the Shinkansen (high speed rail) system is divided into two systems, separated at Tokyo station: the JR East/Hokkaido system to Northeastern Japan, Hokkaido and Hokuriku, and the JR Central/West/Kyushu system to Nagoya, Osaka, Hiroshima and Kyushu. They have separate toll gates and train sets, with different electric systems due to separate electric frequency between east and west Japan (50Hz vs 60Hz AC) 26:31 Hearing Connor hate the current Japanese sleeper trains (Sunrise Izumo/Seto) actually makes me kind of sad, since Japan used to have a pretty great selection of sleeper trains, including the 'Twilight Express' from Osaka to Sapporo and the 'Cassiopeia' from Ueno (Tokyo) to Sapporo, with steak dinner, nice beds and good service, along with the cheaper 'Blue Trains'. The vast majority have since been retired, and now the only way to experience high quality sleeper trains is to splurge for the tourist oriented 'cruise trains', such as the JR Kyushu 'Seven Stars in Kyushu', the JR East 'Shiki-Shima' or the JR West 'West Express Ginga Premier' and 'Twilight Express Mizukaze', all of which are bloody expensive and notoriously difficult to book. I do hope Japan does revive a more affordable yet good sleeper train service to more destinations, that is easy to book and satisfies more people, like how the Austrian OBB does with its Nightjet service in Europe. The Japanese business script is so real. Last visit, I ended up with food poisoning and felt it coming on. The room at the hotel we transitioned to, had a check-in time of 3p. I asked the staff if the room was ready, around noon. They said, "Yes, it's already cleaned and prepared." I can feel my stomach turning, so I ask them if I can check in sooner due to not feeling well. The entire front of house staff just stared at me like I had pulled out a weapon. They panicked and kept trying to see if they could contact regional management for advice. Eventually I had to excuse myself and spent the rest of the afternoon in the lobby bathroom unable to leave or move until my room was ready. 🥴 The staff must have understood the severity once I came out hours later to be walked upstairs... and so they sent me a gift basket with stomach medicine and hot towels.
@@Mwoods2272 I've been let into hotel rooms plenty early in America, many times. If it's clean, usually they have no issue letting me go in. Though, it does depend on how booked out the hotel is.

Got into airplanes as early as 2 and I was on fast track to becoming a pilot… until I went to a seminar and horrified about the academy fees, which would’ve never be paid even if we mortgaged EVERYTHING my family owned. Picked a second childhood hobby/interest and la di da I’m now a chemical engineer with just as strong, if not stronger fascination to airplanes thanks to the engineering classes I took.
What I think Garnt was trying to express in response to Connor asking him "why does the number of infinite scare you", is that humans have managed to invent an idea that is impossible for us to ever accurately measure/grasp/visually represent. There is now an abstract concept that will forever be beyond our ability to control, and we as a species instinctually try to control everything we encounter. It becomes terrifying when you think "what if this concept is actually true and not just some thought experiment, what if there is something in the universe that this idea actually applies to."
Connor's story of how he traumatized his mom by randomly beating his brother with a toy bridge as a toddler got me laughing so hard. It was just so out of left field geezus lol
57:46 This is wrong, there were NOT 23 movies released by Pixar since Coco, that was including short films and such, there were eight films released after Coco, they were: - The Incredibles 2 - Toy Story 4 - Onward - Soul - Luca - Turning Red - Lightyear - Elemental
Soul is fantastic and got hampered the most cause of COVID. I'm also a big fan of Luca and elemental, as well as thinking onwards and turning red are good additions (i know people who really like turning red, even though i wasn't big on it). But it is true that ever since toy story 3, Pixar has been more hampered and released some real stinkers, however they've also released some of their best with Coco, Soul and inside out. I've also heard great things about inside out 2, so Pixar do make great stuff it's just rarer now unfortunately and their standards have been lowered, especially with sequels being pumped out
You know, anytime I hear people complain about fandoms being toxic or annoying on twitter all I can think is thank god I don't need social media to enjoy stories. Because at the end of the day that's the real issue. For Garnt and everyone else that's part of their job so it can't be helped, but personally I never see annoying crap like that because I talk to my friends about the newest chapter and maybe look up a discussion post, so its funny to hear complaints about fandoms "ruining" the enjoyment of the content itself
There is definitely cool shit on social media but most people struggle to avoid the toxicity as well as addiction so I'd say stay that way. For me, I love seeing creatives WIPs too much to leave it
Ya luckily I haven't been too wrapped in any interested with particularly toxic fandoms, because it's nice being a fan of something sharing that interest with others and seeing cool fan art and funny memes and stuff
Yeah, I don't understand this mentality, why would you shoot yourself in the foot? Been using twitter since 2017 and I don't see any toxic stuff, it's really easy to avoid imo People make twitter out to be this hell hole of a place, it's like a meme to me
we've gotten to the point where most people complaining about toxic fandoms are way more toxic anyway. most fandoms are just people trying to enjoy the content.
Garnt mentioning a desire for existential horror, I think he would love the game “SOMA”. It’s some of the best story-telling within the genre that I’ve ever played through.
he'd love to watch a deep dive on the meaning of the game, but i just cant see garnt ACTUALLY playing it. cause maybe this is just me, but SOMA is one of the most terrifying video games i've ever played
Since he loves Made in Abyss, maybe he'll also be into the Mystery Flesh Pit and Roadside Picnic/Stalker. These three have huge similarities. He also likes Annihilation, which Made in Abyss shares in terms of eerie beauty.
1:39:43 There actually is a (very well-known) horror movie about infinity-- kind of. Apparently, when the author of Bird Box (yes, the book that spawned the Netflix movie) was creating the "bird box monster," he was inspired by the concept of infinity. I think he said he'd heard somewhere that if a human were to hypothetically truly comprehend infinity, they would go insane, and that inspired the monster. I'm sure the idea evolved when the book was being written, and even more when the movie was being made, but it did stem from the concept of infinity. Just thought someone might enjoy this knowledge lol
"If life is going to exist in a Universe of this size, then the one thing it cannot afford to have is a sense of proportion." - Douglas Adams, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Space interested me then "infinity" questions starts popping and I cant wrap my head around it. like: "Where's the end of space? It all starts from the big bang, then what's before the big bang? what's nothing? if god created everything, then who created god?" These questions really made me uncomfortable as a child.
Infinity also gives me an existential crisis. E.g. when you think about the fact that after you die, you'll be gone forever - infinity. It's not just a long time, it's infinite, and it's a big difference, and even though it doesn't matter and to our brains it's basically the same, when you try to think about it, it's kind of scary.
The fear that Garnt talks about in the end is called “Apeirophobia” and I had it since I was 6. It’s been torturing me all my life and it became quite severe from the very start and developed into panic attacks that I even to this day sometimes have, it’s nasty stuff and can be pretty troublesome.
I remember the moment at 19 when I lost my faith in humanity while traveling abroad and saw a country of people basically doing the same shit to another minority group in their country that had been done to them not that long ago (historically speaking). That was the moment when I realized if you go back far enough every group of humans were victims at one point and oppressors at another. Anyone who tells you different is suffering from recency bias. Also, every person who is alive right now is only here because some of their ancestors did some truly heinous shit to ensure their genes were transmitted over others, which lead to the people alive now (you know social survival of the fittest and all).
The bois had such a big existential crisis that they just up and wrapped the episode before the usual length. On a more serious note, it's crazy that the last episode smaller than this was nearly 1.5 years ago.
I really want to see Garnt go on a deep dive into cosmic horror media he's into. Aside from Lovecraft stories, he also likes Made in Abyss and Annihilation. It sounds like an interesting video idea to see for someone as meditative as Garnt.
1:24:25 the best thing about this story, that is often forgotten/unknown, is that Plato wasn't his name. It was his ring-name, because he was one of the best wrestlers in Greece at the time. So Diogenes was trolling an absolute unit
Frankly for the last month all no guest episodes were really philosophical or trying to figure out life and society and I LOVE IT I'm not even sorry the no guest episodes are the best Except literally last episode with Sallyamaki the idol was 11 out of 10 she's so precious must protect
what fascinates me about infinity is how useful it ends up being in everyday life without us even knowing, despite how mind-bogling the concept is after you put some thought into it.
it is totally super fine that they’re not fans of ghibli films but a part of me wishes that they had a guest that could genuinely defend it because there are so many beautiful things about the cinematography, music, characters and overall soulful moments that give it so much life. I also feel that since the three of them don’t feel too strongly abt ghibli, their shared disinterest in it gets more enhanced.
I love at the end garnt going on this deep existential talk whilst Connor just does not give a single fuck cause unless it’s he can imagine something he just doesn’t take anything seriously💀
They didn't even mention Takahata's movies, I mean, Grave of the Fireflies and The Tale of Princess Kaguya are not only 2 of the best Ghibli movies, but are probably among the best anime movies of all time
i kinda agree with garnt, and it's probably not that unpopular of an opinon. totoro is boring along with the ghibli movies that aren't made by him (pom poko, ocean waves, only yesterday, the cat returns, etc...)

On the whisky bar. If you add maybe 3 drops of water to some whisky, the whisky will taste different. So in a whisky bar they will give you a small glass of water so you could experience the whisky you ordered. How this works is by adding water to whisky with a lot of oil, you will change the solubility of the whisky changing how you’re tasting the whisky.
Physical immersion is a different beast. I went to horror escape room recently, it was styled as catacombs, we started blindfolded, GM walked as through small corridors for like 5 minutes, handcuffed us to a wall and left us after monologing the intro story, generally: lots of crawling around in small spaces, sceletons, timed puzzles, I had to close myself in a space that was like 50x50cm and cut my way back in order to see a clue, and of course we were chased by a 'murderer' with an axe that did sparks when he hit the ground. It was bloody terrifying, and it's regarded as easy and not that scary. There are ones that go way way further and hit harder. And like, we were safe, handcuffs were plastic, there were big red stop buttons in every room and hidden cameras/intercoms so you could ask for help with riddles and shit, but I don't know if I would ever do it again. When you're playing a game you can just close it, or just turn around in your chair and bam, immersion broken. Without that barrier it really hits different. Also, people can be assholes, when we were chatting about other escape rooms he said he went to one with his friends, one of them was very easily scared so they asked not to scare her and the actor decided to ignore it and go extra hard on her. Nothing bad happened to her, but jesus, that would give me PTSD.
The water with a whiskey isn't for drinking by itself. It's for dripping a little into the whiskey to tear apart the bonds between the water and oils to move scents and flavors in the oils to the top of the drink.
One of my favourite documentaries is Peter Jackson's "They Shall Not Grow Old". It's a collection of remastered WW1 recordings of just life on the frontlines and over them recordings of survivors are playing. There's stuff described there that has never been remade in a film, like how they went to the toilet or how they wasted a ton of ammo just shooting rats because there were so many it was hard to walk (on top of the knee/waist-high mud and bodies), or how they had fun playing cards or having sports games. There's no narrator or story, it just starts with a clip slowly being colorised and a guy starts speaking, and then there's an hour and 40 minutes of that until the end. Probably the most unbiased documentary I've ever seen, it's literally told from firsthand accounts
As a cinematography fan, hearing them talking about Ghibli... it hurts bro, it is pure suffering. Ghibli studio IS not necessarily a good anime producer, but they make banger movies that they just so happend to choose the animation media.

Man, I enjoy when they talk of "kind of serious, kind of ridiculous" topics, like the one of "not wanting to be a fan because of the fandom" and "falling out of love with things". Those are interesting, serious topics, but they somewhat talk about it in the most ridiculous ways. I enjoy the serious topics (like on previous episodes of attending a funeral of a friend, trying to make friends as an adult, etc...) and the ridiculous topics (all of the food debates). I didnt expect the train ticket system to be so complicated. Japan really is a place of two extremes. Some things are extremely optimised and convenient, and other things are overly complicated because they have to change certain systems if they want to make it work well but the systems are so set in stone that it's impossible to make change happen

Yeh, even though his take that every nation in history did shady things should be the universal fact but unfortunately thats not the case, and different nations twist facts and then the people defend those twisted facts
It's exactly the same with train tickets in Germany. Was so annoying when I lived there. It was crazy to me that if you buy a ticket it does not come with a seat by default.

Joey and grant both gave half of the same fact when they were talking about some infinities being bigger than others and the easiest example of the is the one joey gave of the numbers between 0 and 1 Vs just the the numbers from 1 to infinity. As always, the factoid pop ups are greatly appreciated. And it's wonderfully responsible of you folks to clarify any errors the boys might say (which is natural in any human conversation. We're not going to fact check everything in the middle of talking).
Turning Red was divisive, practically 50% of people liked it and the other 50% didn't. The Incredibles 2 is decent but extremely unremarkable compared to the first one. Coco is good, that's why they used it as a divisor between 'the good era' and 'the rest'. Soul was also really good but strangely forgettable, everyone kept talking about it for like a week and then forgot rather quickly (which happens with a lot of stuff nowadays, but that's also kinda the point of the discussion).
Agree a lot with what was said above. Coco might be the last time a Pixar film blew me away, and felt like a throwback to the Pixar I grew up on; Incredibles 2 doesn't hold a candle to the first film, and is generally just completely unremarkable, making comparisons very unfair; Soul was enjoyable, but yeah, completely forgettable. I'll admit I haven't seen Turning Red, though from the outside looking in it does seem like it's had quite a divided reception (not the reason I've not watched it yet, mind)
90% of my earliest memories are just images or 3 second clips about the most mundane things, as if my brain selected its core memories on a whim.

God innit
My life's rock bottom
What? Giving it the "number" infinity made it controllable in a way. I don't think it's terrifying at all tbh.
Connor's story of how he traumatized his mom by randomly beating his brother with a toy bridge as a toddler got me laughing so hard. It was just so out of left field geezus lol
I think this is the shortest trash taste episode ever 😆 The fact that it's still longer than 90% of podcasts and it's "short" is crazy
I mean it’s not hard when you’re talking to people you like. That’s why it’s so good
episode 3 would like a word with you
@Iiro_Toivola LOL fair. I didn't remember those being that short but it's been a long time
The shortest is episode #3, which was only a bit over an hour.
57:46 This is wrong, there were NOT 23 movies released by Pixar since Coco, that was including short films and such, there were eight films released after Coco, they were:
- The Incredibles 2
- Toy Story 4
- Onward
- Soul
- Luca
- Turning Red
- Lightyear
- Elemental
All cringe.
All bad
My man. I don't even know about Twitter and other app discourses until RUclipsrs mention them.
Been using twitter since 2017 and I don't see any toxic stuff, it's really easy to avoid imo
People make twitter out to be this hell hole of a place, it's like a meme to me
we've gotten to the point where most people complaining about toxic fandoms are way more toxic anyway. most fandoms are just people trying to enjoy the content.
Signals is definitely a Garnt game.
@@Royal__Kitsune I'd love to also see him play SOMA and make a video of a deep dive into cosmic/existential horror media he's into.

There actually is a (very well-known) horror movie about infinity-- kind of.

I completely understand Garnt's fear of infinity. I've been afraid of it for years now and having an existential crisis about it 😅
I find the infinity beautiful.

Space interested me then "infinity" questions starts popping and I cant wrap my head around it.
like:
"Where's the end of space? It all starts from the big bang, then what's before the big bang? what's nothing? if god created everything, then who created god?"
These questions really made me uncomfortable as a child.

1:13:59 I loved Connors "Are we the baddies..?" Moment 😂
Almost every country has like 10 of those moments at some point in their history. It’s remarkable how awful people can be.
@blurb9319 true. But the British did most of this shit after industrialization, so it's all on a significantly larger scale.

I think Garnt and Joey would probably get a kick out of the Banach-Tarski Paradox.
what fascinates me about infinity is how useful it ends up being in everyday life without us even knowing, despite how mind-bogling the concept is after you put some thought into it.
In regards to the Pixar Comment, a good chunk of what was listed were shorts not Full feature films. In total there were 8 new films for Pixar.
Garnt and Joey talking about infinity and Connor sitting there not giving a fuck shows how much Garnt and Joey share a brain cell

it is totally super fine that they’re not fans of ghibli films but a part of me wishes that they had a guest that could genuinely defend it because there are so many beautiful things about the cinematography, music, characters and overall soulful moments that give it so much life. I also feel that since the three of them don’t feel too strongly abt ghibli, their shared disinterest in it gets more enhanced.
Joey likes it. He doesn’t watch anime tho (😂)

From what I've heard, "Turning Red", "Soul", "Incredibles 2", and "Coco" were all pretty good.
They were decent at best. Definitely not as good as the classics
