  • A Video Essay on the topic of "console killer" PC builds, why they are becoming less common in 2021, and why it's important that they exist.
"Console Killers" - budget PCs that can play games at console-equivalent settings for similar prices - have been a staple of the budget PC community for most of the 2010s. Recently, this category of PC build has been under threat from market forces and steep competition. In this video essay, I take a deep dive into what a console killer build is, how it became possible, and how it might happen again.

Hello there calling you guys from the end of 2023 Yeah we still can't kill that little bastard It's a goddamn honey badger!!!!
Seriously the closest piece of silicon you can get to its graphics processor on a budget is the RX 5500 XT which you can sometimes SOMEtimes get for about a $150 when it's on sale or when you buy it used.
That's the graphics card alone That's not even taking it to consideration the CPU which you need an ryzen 7 2700x which will run you a cool $200 on sale new or around 120 used.
Yeah for those keeping notes brand new and on sale that's already over $350.... Yeah..... Not a good start considering we haven't even taken into account the RAM the SSD the power supply or really anything else, 550, Right now if you want it brand new and only if you find yourself with some massive discounts you are looking at around $550 to match the series s again that is with some mega hefty discounts.
Or if you somehow manage to find yourself with some ultra heavy discounts because you were lucky that particular day on a blue moon or because you got yourself some used parts that are ridiculously low price you are still looking at $450.
But you know that's fine, considering the rate of depreciation on the parts by next year you should be able to build a series s killer for around $300 with some good discounts and only a few used parts...... Except the Series s will drop price to $250 next year because there's going to be a new series s with better components and a 1 terabyte hard drive releasing next year or the year after that for $300.
On better news however we might be able to beat the series X.... With used parts on discount... Not necessarily the leaked Series X all digital or PS5 digital..... I mean used parts and heavy discounts will probably get you to 450.... But those things are going to be sold for 400 bucks...... Or you know about 350 used for the PS5 considering the leaks for the Xbox say it's going to come with a 1-year subscription to game pass I don't think we're going to see any used Xbox sx digitals on the market next year.

as for today (april 27, 2023) I finally managed to build 2 entire gaming pcs for around 700usd for both. It took me more than 5 years of work, and 7 of savings (I am from a very poor country and minimum salary is less than 180usd per month). My current specs are i5 8500 rtx 3060ti 16gb 2666mhz dual (2x8) p650m 80plus bronze and a ryzen 3 3100 gtx 1060 3gb 600w 80plus white 16gb 2666mhz (2x4 and 1x8). U might argue about bottleneck and other things to improve, and I already know that, but I can say I am definitely happy with what I have achieved, being the 200usd rtx 3060ti I bought (now is 160usd) the best buy I could possibly do, making my whole budget around 720usd for both computers. It was a long journey, and I had to make many things to achieve it, changing processors and reselling computers along the whole process of improving my own. It was incredible, and I enjoyed it, I encourage any pc enthusiast to buy on the used market such as this channel has offered to do in their videos.
I don't really know how many people will read this, hopefully just the creator and some others, but I just want to say that I hope others can enjoy this process as much as I did. Thank you very much Iceberg for your videos, keep it going!

The GPU shortage didn't even START to end until early 2022, and it wasn't until later in the year where prices were down to somewhat reasonable prices. In November 2021 I bought a Gigabyte Aero 15 with a i7 9750H, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 1660ti, and a 4K OLED screen for $1500, it was great coming from a 4130T with integrated graphics, but even at the time it wasn't a powerhouse, and still cost a ton. Even today it cost $1200, but most of that is probably cause of the screen, but at the height of the shortage I thought is was a good deal cause that GPU would have been probably $400 alone. I wound up buying one in late summer 2022 for $200 to go with my 12100 build, which is the system I still use and is also the first one I've ever built from scratch. The laptop wound up being stolen from my apartment 6 months after I bought it, along with a bunch of pre 1965 silver coins, and that's when I decided to move out of that crackhouse.

But it's 2022 and the GPU prices are decreasing but they are still way over MSRP. But when a GPU that cost $500 is going for $1,200 prices aren't going to come down that quickly.

Fast forward to nearly 2023. There still isn't a viable console killer, Ethereum crashed in price, went to proof of stake so no longer possible to effectively mine on a GPU. Many miners so dogmatically convinced that it's worth keeping their hardware because something else will be a way to convert electricity into gold. Nvidia is starving the market of 2 year old "new" RTX cards keeping them ABOVE their MSRP, and with the trend in new GPU price to performance, we won't see a viable console killer this generation either.
AMD GPU'S, even with big reductions on "New" cards and Ryzen 5000 CPU's still aren't viable as console killers. So even if you can grab a used 6600 for £180-£200, a new/used 5600 for £130-£150 factor in some cheap ddr4 a mobo, case, SSD and PSU, you will still be looking at minimum about £480 And still probably won't have the full gaming potential of a 9th gen console. Sure, you could go for a Ryzen 1000-2000 CPU, but they have surprisingly held their value and are difficult to get cheaper than the better and more recent R5 5600. Now, 2 years into this console generation we are looking at a refresh coming soon. Where we could be seeing greater performance. Where will the console killer stand then?
It's definitely possible to upgrade your way to console performance with a GPU; but you will more than likely be paying 50-75% of the price of a console to get their.
Sure, PC has more functionality, but it lacks the easy nature of a console. Consoles are very "living room TV" friendly, meaning, they won't be dying anytime soon.
Is the console killer dead? Or will the PC marketplace start having to reflect the console Price/performance as the economy dips into another recession? Gamers on a budget have no better option than a console it seems, and although lacking in total functionality, the simplicity of a console, makes it much easy to sit down Infront of at the end of a long day.

The console became more a PC and a PC a console with Xbox being integrated right into windows and with the Steam deck showing the other way.

As someone who thought the 8th gen consoles were trash in most respects, the value the 9th gen machines offer is astounding. It's a shame that they too are suffering from shortages and scalpers, but as you said console market's prospects for normalcy look far better than that of GPU's.
I'm still sticking to my PC, as it's my preferred platform for a number of reasons, and I already had a great rig prior to the CCP Virus. I even managed to get an Ampere GPU at MSRP, but even if I hadn't I would've rode out this nightmare with my old GTX 1080 just fine. If I had any friends looking to get into gaming right now though, I'd point them to a PS5 or XBSX, or a prebuilt if they were absolutely insistent on going with a PC.

The fun part is that consoles actually killed themselves and are nothing but PCs kept alive by even being sold at a loss.
Yet there will always be a demand for people for which an actual PC is to complicated.
The console k*ller PC was however doomed from the start. As it still was to complicated for console folks aside anything else.
That said, you by a console then you agree with being sold the lesser experience in any game and unlike PCs it will never change from there on.

I write code for a living and I’m attracted to consoles. A PC is not too complicated for me but for me, gaming time is premium. That and I cannot be bothered to deal with Windows 11 and it’s garbage, more than I have to at my work. I don’t want to come home from work after sitting in front of my PC for 8 hours, only to sit in front of my PC again.
This is why consoles are great for me. Couch gaming with access to games instantly. Also I like physical ownership of my games, something which is dead on PC. Most of my games on my PlayStation 5 are on discs.

One thing a lot of people forget to mention is while YES the consoles are powerful with "basically a 3700x and basiclly a 6700xt"
They run on an APU. The CPU side of that APU might have 8 cores and run at 3.7ghz but it only has what? 3MB of cache? Somewhere around that number and Maybe a 15-20w TDP.
3700x has the same cores and slightly higher speeds but it has tripple the cash and can run with more power going to it for longer. And the Gpu may have similar cores and speeds but it has tripple the memory and its not shared RAM its dedicated
The specs make it look close to a 3700x but theres a lot of forgotten factors like way less cache. Way lower tdp. It will thermal throttle. It has 16gb of RAM and 2 or maybe more GB of that is shared with the built in GPU which again takes away the resources of the CPU.
A 3700x 6700XT cpu gpu combo will eat a ps5 and xbox s alive. So will any modern system.
    My two cents.

It is just not possible without doubling the bandwith along with minimizing the latency between the CPU/GPU/Memory,the latter being the "impossible" part unless you know how to tape them all together. And there is "uncompressing chip" that boost streaming of assets 3x times more faster than a top of line PC hardware...

Even if one has to start from absolute 0 either chosing a console or a PC (completely or partially new), a PC still can do more (in general tasks and in games from the past) and WILL last longer than consoles; furthermore upgrades to a computer don't need to replace the entire thing, and good luck if you want to add more RAM or change the CPU on a console instead.
Right now, as a person on the poorer side of the economy, I confidently and shamelessly say that IF your ONLY goal is to game at 1080/1440p 60FPS, then an Xbox Serie S is the best and only console that you should even take into consideration. If you want to pay more to get a Serie X or a No Games 5, then you should consider paying what WOULD BE PAID FOR ONLINE ON CONSOLE immediately for PC (3 years of online is €180), getting €700 togheter, or even more, and just get a good computer now.
"But le graphics!" someone may say, and once again, IF you only care about the three games that came out of these new consoles' graphics, then get a Serie S, if you instead plan to do more (as said above) then get a decent CPU, compromise on graphics and wait for a better upgrade in the future.
To frivolously spend money is the privilege of the rich and the mistake of the spoiled.

As long as Nvidia is focused on RTX and DLSS we are screwed. They low spec machines holding the whole industry back. The problem with the console is that its no longer a console, its using pc components, it has pc features, you can install harddisk like a pc, but they are not a pc. Computer games have become so low quality its no longer worthwhile, no developer is going to make something that doesn't run on a console.

And it will take several years before it becomes 'obsolete ' Even seven yr old graphics cards will run modern titles at 1080p.
Not only that but psvr isnt backwards compatible with older titles like pcvr.
It doesnt have built in games to download direct, isnt wireless and doesnt have a fraction of what pcvr has on steam or occulus store!

What a joke, most people who actually look at the current gen console fidelity knows that the games are running in low and have worse ray tracing... you also don't need a powerful PC to get console level performance at 1080p/1440p which is all you need considering the PS5 can't run most modern AAA games at 4K with a consistent frame rate. The best bit you did is trying to push the idea that the 8th gen consoles had magical performance when the reality is that they were obsolete on launch (which is why they got so many reiterations)...
