  • Building & testing a £750 Gaming PC in "Next Gen" games at XBox Series X & PlayStation 5 console-equivalent settings
    Console Killers have met their match with the 9th console generation; it's impossible to match a Series X or PS5 with a PC spec-for-spec in mid 2021 without spending double the price of a console; and that's not even taking into account premium Scalper prices!
    But… do PCs really need console horsepower to give console-like performance?
    Consoles have introduced a culture of "fudging" quality settings, reducing resolution and dropping settings on the fly to maintain smooth 30FPS or 60FPS gameplay. Can we do the same thing on a PC that ALMOST meets the criteria of a Console Killer?

      Isn't the PS5's true cost closer to 800+$ over 8 years in total with it's online fees (if it lasts 8 years) that can't be upgraded components wise, it can't do a lot of the stuff a PC can, it will be superseded by the PS5 Pro or something in a few years, and if anyone wants that upgrade, it's another 400$. Plus the games will cost a lot more than on PC. Lastly, when PC component prices will normalize and newer GPUs come out in the next couple of years, PC's will not even sniff in the direction of a PS5. So nope, 400$ is the wrong cost for a PC to take as the basis of comparison, because that is not the actual cost of the PS5. I think your 750$ range is getting closer to the correct value.

    I think it's hard to build something that can be compared to the current line of consoles (barring the series S) without paying a pretty penny. Consoles are (usually) ease of mind though your mileage may vary.
    Personally however, I think going for a PC for gaming purposes has its own advantages over just trying to match visual parity and performance with consoles. No one can convince me to get a PS5 when I have such a vast library on my PC, a lot of the games I own don't require an internet connection to function, some are ones you'll rarely see available on current consoles or require remasters/remakes for that, not to mention emulation.
    I've stuck with PC for nearly ten years. Yes, it's not as straightforwards as consoles in many regards, emulation isn't perfect and a lot of older games do require some tweaking to get working, but I'm happy with my experience and probably won't move over or get one for a while at least for myself.

    4:17 The only issue with SATA SSD's is that future PC technologies like Direct Storage and RTX IO will require an NVMe drive to work, as the GPU and storage device talk to each other through the PCIe interface. But those are still a ways off, and may not even be utilized very well when they first arrive. Plus adding more storage later is easy.

    Honestly, no pc a be a true console killer in my mind. WIth a console you pay 500 bucks (or less) and they give a working brand new machine with no labor on your end. With a console killer you often need used parts in order to beat the consoles price. Also pc's don't age as well as consoles. Of course I love "console killers" (as I own one) but the name doesn't fit the product at least in my mind. (gread vid btw)

    • @IcebergTech
      @IcebergTech  3 года назад +5

      In my mind, a “console killer” isn’t really about replacing consoles- the name is just 2014 era clickbait or something for PC fanboys to brag about in playground debates. The 9th generation is creating something of a “console killer crisis” in the budget PC community which I’m finding intensely interesting. I’m planning on a couple more videos that go deeper into this topic in the next few weeks.

    • @DrearierSpider1
      @DrearierSpider1 3 года назад +2

      @@IcebergTech True "console killer" PC's made sense at the launch of the PS4 and XB1, as they both used hardware that was as close to off the shelf PC parts as you could realistically get. And more importantly, neither was being sold at a loss, so the PS4 was performing at or behind the performance level of a $400 PC in most cases. If you built something like a Potato Masher in 2013 or 2014, you'd have run into issues with low CPU thread count and low VRAM towards the end of the generation, but that type of machine was at least effective for about half of the 8th gen era.
      With the PS5 and XBSX, you simply couldn't build a $500 machine that could match their visuals and performance, even assuming we lived in a world where all parts were in stock and selling for MSRP.

    I don't understand this idea of a "console killer". What exactly is the purpose of creating a console killer when manufacturers are selling their consoles at a loss, to then rake in massive profits in game and accessory sales? You can't compete with selling something at a loss. This whole idea of PCs competing with consoles only drives sales anyway - Either driving people to think that PCs can no longer compete, buy a PS5 and then spend their remaining life savings on their first 3 games, or drive people to attempt to compete with underpriced consoles and buy overpriced hardware - This infighting is only desirable for manufacturers.
    I don't want a console. I have no freedom or control over it, I am stuck paying 100 dollars for each new game (In northern EU) and I can't upgrade it. My old PCs are now Linux / Docker servers, and my slowly aging gaming-PC might not be able to beat a PS5 for FPS this time around, but can hold its own just fine. AND then comes the MASSIVE savings of waiting a short year after each (disastrous) AAA-release and get the game for close to nothing. This is not even mentioning all the cool things a computer can do for you (Shout-out to Docker), all the free software out there OR all the fantastic indie-games you're missing out on.
    -- - - -
    Consoles are their own segment. It is not a competition. If you play a total of 3 games and like to sit on your couch, don't care about FPS or indie-games, and don't care about control - Buy a console. You will absolutely love it, and you won't have to worry about upgrades, drivers, software or anything of the sort.
    But that is not me. Don't try to compete with a product that makes all it's money on ripping you off on the purchases you are stuck making after the "fantastic" deal you got on the hardware itself.

    • @Chrisspru
      @Chrisspru Год назад

      its about total cost of ownership and multi use.
      a pc costs up front, but the games and online component are cheaper, plus there being extra utility.
      a console is cheaper up front, but costs more games and online servvice wise.
      so that has to be taken into calculation.
      then a pc that slightly outperforms a console can be a very efficient deal.

  • @capsikseason
    @capsikseason 2 года назад +1

    Actually on console you are really paying more Sony and xbox don't profit much from the consoles they make theft money on the member ships to play online that's where they make money if you think about pc is cheaper and better long term

    • @nico3064
      @nico3064 Год назад

      It's actually not cheaper. You can get a membership for like 40€ per year which is maximum 280€ in a typical console life cycle of 7 years. And only if you have the membership all the time. You also could only buy on a monthly basis, so if you don't play like in summer it gets even cheaper. For alot of games you don't even need a membership at all to play online.
      For a console like performance you will have to pay more at the beginning and eventually you'll have to upgrade it within the 7 years, so even with an added 280€ in worst case for console, you're still cheaper at the end
