- Putting together a cheap, repeatable £250 PC build that can match or beat an XBOX Series S for about the same price, then testing it in a series of recent and popular games in 2023.

Yes, I’m back again, on my Console Killer soapbox once more. I believe that it should always be possible to get a console-like gaming experience on PC without spending over the odds, but the last few years of shortages and price hikes has made that next to impossible. Now that status quo finally seems to be ending, and thanks to the availability of ex-mining RTX GPUs and old high-end workstations for incredibly reasonable prices, it’s possible to put together a real XBOX Series S Killer for the cost of a Series S itself, if not even less. In this video, I upgrade a cheap Lenovo P500 workstation into an 8 core beast with all-flash storage and a ray tracing-enabled GPU... for about £250!

Notes/Errata:
Sorry, I messed up some of the text. The RAM is 8 sticks of DDR4-2133, not DDR3-2133 as stated on screen; also, I forgot to change the scene numbers in Starfield. I shouldn't edit on 4 hours sleep, I guess!
Normally my capture footage matches the resolutions and settings being described by the voiceover. For this video, I’ve focused on just a single capture per game, so don’t worry too much if the Afterburner overlay doesn’t match the stats on screen at the time.
While this is a great idea, this video is very very flawed. You are comparing used parts to a new console. If you wanted to do a proper comparison, you’d compare new to new or used to used. You can get a used series S for sub 200 quid. I’ve seen them at 130-150 quid. So no, you cannot build a Series S pc killer right now. Maybe soon.
Also, little typo on the DDR version in the video, it shows DDR3 while its DDR4 :3
Great video anyway !
@@OgoTheKeeperYou're just coping right now. The video was fine, we know that during this generation the PC prices are way higher than previous generation. Iceberg went for a computer that will last and be easily upgrade. He could have easily built a computer that hits close to this performance for 150 quid. But that would be just as shortsighted as buying a console. As the upgrade path would be non-existent.
Just buy your console and move on bud.
@@MonsieuxChat bah, nuts. Thanks 🙏
Games are much cheaper on pc plus you can pirate of you'd like, aren't limited to controller input and don't have to pay online. So in terms of price/value that more than counter balances the fact the used console is a little cheaper. Even with a used console a pc at the price of the new one works out cheaper very quickly.
Your warning at the end is so true in the industry. Office PCs with enough power to still be used but have 1 quirk that just kills them for upgradability. Thank you for making that clear and giving an example of what can happen when you buy a closed ecosystem build.
This was such an interesting build.
Overall I would hesitate to call it as "kiling" the Xbox Series S, and that was a lowly task. To me it seems impossible to match or surpass the PS5 and XSX at this moment. They're too cheap, the games are too optimised, and PC Hardware is too janky and overpriced.
Console Killers were a challenge during the Xbox to WiiU era, but not impossible. And during the XB1 to the XB1X period they were pretty easy to build. The current climate isn't so good, I'm thinking we'll need to wait some more years until we see Office PCs with the likes of Intel i9-9900 (or equivalent/better) hit that budget segment of under USD $300 to make the build viable, and next-gen dGPUs that are much cheaper and much faster and need very little energy. So maybe in Late 2025 or later, we will have to see.
From Sandy Bridge to Haswell motherboard swaps are possible, but the former provides the least challenge.
@@ekintekoFor 500 USD w/ an RX 5700 XT you can absolutely buy a console killer that easy runs 90% of games above 120+fps at 1080p and even runs many games at 60+ fps 1440p. That is a console killer in my eyes.
For me, the best part about going to PC, was simply control, then mods, then probably higher frames.
1- Getting DRM free media is a big deal to me. Means when i buy it, it's actually mine. I can usually find any games at like 60% off, atleast
2- emulators are magic. Love them.
3- mods, making the game closer to what i want.
Don't forget no more xbox live/Playstation fees for playing online.
The online fees for console add up, makes building a decent "5 year" PC well worth it
@@ScoutReaper-zn1rz Very true, but since I'm a hermit who hates playing online I didn't think about it lol
@@phrazee yes, I be saying this the whole time. If power consumption is important to the cost of pcs in areas of high power cost, console subscriptions should be important to everyone who buy them.
Finally someone voicing out that mods are one of the best parts of PC gaming. I basically play all my games, modern or otherwise, with mods and going back to console only restricted ecosystem would be a definitive no-no. Heck, I even mod console games like Switch games through emulation.
usually i'm very silly with my comments, but iceberg, your content is amazing and makes your viewers come back every time! keep on doing what you do best (and dont melt)

This channel is extremely underrated and the quality is better than some bigger channels. Thank you Iceberg!
The reason why I love PC is that my games migrate with me. If a PC game struggles a bit with my current set up, It's ok, I know I will be able to crank it up later when I upgrade. It's good to see this level of power on a decently priced PC. This build has its downsides compared with a Series S (power, availability of used parts, size), but as a gateway to PC building/gaming it's perfect!
Just built a similar console killer pc last 2023 for the same cost of a series S.

Primarily targetted at 1440p gaming.
Runs newer games at 1440p60fps mid-high settings + fsr(if available)
Runs older and easier to run games at 4k60fps low-med-high mix + fsr(if avail)
System is attached to a 4k TV while using a controller. Never been happier with the build
Very power efficient for the performance it gives
As someone who built basically this exact system a few years ago, go with the 16 series E5s. The unlocked boost and higher base clocks are what you need for gaming.
i had a 1680v2 overclocked to 4.7 all core for like 9 years was silicon lottery winner for sure that with 1080ti carried me till 2021 a 5960x with aggressive overclocks will keep up with ryzen 5800x3d
Im trying to build a xeon one, what model do you guys think i should look for
I've missed these console killer builds nice to see them return.
you cant figure out a build that kills a console? complete NOOB
@@donatedflea There is no such thing as a console killer. Over 90% of games are sold on consoles so they are optimized for console PC's are an afterthought and you have to constantly shovel money into them to keep them remotely viable
@@thefinalroman yeah lets be honest..someone who builds a pc like that doesnt pay for games ^^
They never said that lol. The way I and most other people interpreted it was that it's nice to see videos about them again not that it's difficult to build one lol.@@donatedflea
yes this machine cant even play ratchet and clark in mid settings ... cant even play starfield with 30 fps i think ... holy crap so good that pc is and what kind of cpu intel xeon 5000 ? Nha not gonna work, you basicly build just a bad pc or in other words waste of sand that has no options for future upgrades.
Iceberg mate, you’re killing it with this content. Keep doing what you’re doing, these videos are why I watch RUclips.
Love your intros + stock footage.
I was able to put together an amazing thinkstation p520 for my brother a few weeks ago with a Xeon W-2135, 16gb ram, RX 5700 for $305! It performs amazing
I am thinking of something similar, but with W-2133, and RTX 4060, more like $530.
Lmk if you did that already bc the rtx4060 sounds like way too much power for that cpu
I love the production quality you put into your videos - makes it feel like I'm on a tech adventure.
It’s interesting to see the 2060 maintaining a somewhat relevant position in the current PC landscape. Granted, it is basically a 1080 with RT + DLSS support but 2GB less VRAM, the latter of which seems to be its Achilles’ heel. Which leads me to my main point, the budget “sweet spot” has to be the RX 6600 / 2060 Super (the 3050 is laughably still selling for far more than it should) thanks to modern feature sets & 8GB of VRAM. That being said, I’d take the Radeon in this scenario as RT performance is simply too weak at this price point to be the driving factor behind which card you go with. The 6600 regularly goes for less than $180-200 where I live, and that’s brand new. It’s also fairly power efficient, at a 132w TDP it can even be powered by a ~400w PSU (as long as it has a single 8-pin connector)
Vega 64's, 5600xt and 5700xt are around $100 used and offer decent performance, the 6600xt is amazing and I use one in my daily driver.
I've considered pairing a 2060 Super with an i7-5775c, if I ever get to build my own gaming PC one day. Toggling the eDRAM can bring me 10100-level performance or better, and can alleviate bottlenecks in most games.
$200 2080ti is better
@@thefinalroman It's selling for that low?! Wow!
Might as well consider a 10th gen i5 or i7, then
@@thefinalroman 2080ti's that work are going for 300+, 200 might get a wore out half broken one.
Great video! Its awesome to see youtubers making videos on more budget oriented builds. Even thought I have a relatively high end build myself, builds like this are amazing for people who have been wanting to dip their toes in the PC gaming space but not want to break the bank. Its also a great way for them to learn and get used to tinkering with their machine and get them ready for when they decide to drop more money on a higher end build later down the road once they feel ready. Your earned yourself a new subscriber friend! :)
Iceberg's humor has been getting cheeky recently and I love it. Keep up with the amazing content sir!
such fantastic quality for such a small channel, your scripting, voice over, editing, and style are fantastic. keep it up man. subscribed.
I LOVE THE "OR ARE THEY"
So 3 years after they came out, we still have to scrape the bottom of the barrel to find a decent enough perf/price thing...
I'd say Sony and MS did a wonderful job. Especially Sony.
You're ignoring the fact that the consoles are loss leaders.
Everyone ignores the fact that its AMD and TSMC as much as , if not more than, it is sony and ms. @@joestevenson5568
Consoles are always objectively better money than pcs for the first 2/3 of their life time, just when they are at the end of their life time you can build a pc that performs better for less
Man the blazing saddles scene drop made me sub, turn on notifications and I will be giving every video of yours from the last month a like. You’re a cultured man
Damn, really shows what you can do when you know what and where to look for. Amazing vid keep it up!
The amount of research you put in your videos is pretty apparent. Thanks for your perspective.
Nice video as always.... totally love your channel man..😌
Great work achieving the nearly impossible!
I have been watching for about a year, very quality content
Excellent video my friend, I had just about given up on console killer PCs thanks to the ridiculous prices these days. I ran into similar problems with my kid's Lenovo box and complete lack of 6 or 8 pin PCIe connectors and the proprietary 10 pin motherboard connector. I resorted to a jank adapter that worked surprisingly well out of the box with a new PSU. With a 7700k and a 2060 Super it runs fine for most games but RT is out of the question. Still, he's happy and I no longer hear screams of frustration about low frame rates in Fortnite.
Always enjoy these console budget builds and seeing what people come up with. I had an idea youd go the Xeon route lol.
i switched to PC in 2015, I been building since 2016
I've sold over 35 PCs and have never lost a dime on any of them, my smallest profit was $50, the most was $350, average around $100
just work your way up, start cheap and buy and sell your way up, i went from a $120 PC to a $1000 ryzen 7 5800x 6900xt PC from beginning to start
That was genuinely a very interesting watch.
Love the longer video. Last long one I saw had like 900 views but I appreciate them when I get one.
great topic, great content, great analysis, great approch, great presentation.
P.S. please do a spectre / meltdown performance comparisson video. ideally with different AMD/Intel CPUs form different generations. Though i understand thats a hell of an effort
For the price of my new mid-range PC I'm assembling right now, I could have bought a PS5 and an XBOX Series X together.... Ryzen 5 7500 F, 32GB DDR5-6000, RTX 4070 and a 1 TB PCIe 4.0 SSD.
Thanks for listing the track names. I discovered a whole treasure of lit music because of your videos.
Good call-out for disabling the spectre/meltdown mitigation. Wouldn't have thought of that being such a draw on performance. Good build, though you'll spend a Series S's worth on electricity playing over the years (exaggeration!) (and I posted before the end of the video where you said basically this)
It seemed to be a real drag, CPU usage was way higher and it dragged the 1% lows down. Cyberpunk was so bad the audio was affected, which I haven't seen since I tried running it off an old hard drive...
I'm glad RUclips recommended this video because now I can comment about my PC build since I don't have any friends. I browsed many workstation towers online to upgrade from my SFF HP Z230 and found a Brickstation P520 with everything but a graphics card. This Machine has an Xeon W-2135, 32GB of DDR4-2666, a 900W PSU, two NVME bays, and two 6+2 power cables for dual graphics. I bought a PNY XLR8 GTX 1070 OC and a simple 1tb 2.5" SDD for games spending about $350 in total. It's a wonderful machine that runs Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 on ultra if I didn't have mods installed, only has a few quality-of-life issues such as Fallout 4 taking a while to load 450+ mods and proprietary parts like the PSU hindering non-Lenovo upgrades.
This is not gonna be related to the actual video. But I just started watching and. You have a vibe going. Your style of video and audio. Everything is just something different and comfy to watch thank you and keep it up!
Nice. I picked up an 11400F and RX 6600 with the exact same idea to match/beat the Series S. I owned a Series S for a year but as a PC gamer at heart I couldn’t stay on the platform.
The thumbnail goes so hard 😅.
Anywho, great vid man.
Great content. Well presented. This is one of the best tech channels for my money.
A 2060 Super or 2070 would have been the best way to go as they both have 8GB VRAM like the Series S. That would just be in keeping with the theme. Overall this IS a console killer. Good work!
Edit: The 2667 was probably the way to go. It would have given you the extra giddyup you needed.
used 3060’s are cheap too
@@someguywithmtndew5691 Indeed
Great video good sir!
My god. This is a great build/video. I think I'll consider something like this
I got an XBOX Series X and a PC for $700 total. The $400 XBOX came with 4 games, 2 controllers with rechargeable battery packs, and an RGB stand. The $300 PC came with an i7 8700k, ASUS GTX 1060 6GB TURBO, 16GB of Patriot Viper DDR4 RAM at 3000MHz, Corsair H100i 240mm AIO cooler, and perhaps the best part being the case a Kediers C570 open air with 7 RGB fans.
I waited for it. You did not disappoint. Neun und Sechzig, in French, makes my inner teen giggle!
But of course, this is a very serious channel, and as such, I will be serious, even if it nearly kills me. These budget recommendations, especially including the tip about InSpectre, are fantastic. I can't help but wonder if a console die-hard (and, I'll say it, fan boy) might heed these recommendations. While you're getting more for the same money, the level of effort of the Console-Killer vs the instant, frictionless, gratification of the console killer is definitely a thing.
Terrific video, my Brit-who-wishes-he-were-French, but should consider Deutsch, friend.
I like this kind of content and growing up with a pc as my only mean of gaming... i kinda feel stuck to the pc even though i have all the consoles too i still find myself using the pc much more. I guess the ps5 i keep for the exclusives and the xbox series X is nice because my son plays on it allot and when going on vacation nothing beats the 120 euros i payed for the series S refurbished with gamepass :D
Hey Buddy, Great video.
I did notice that the part where you did the tests you didn't always change the Scene numbers between 1,2 & 3 on the starfield test.
Easy mistake to make, not sure if it would be an easy live fix to make but I thought I'd give it a mention.
Hey, there ya go... Nice video as always ice. That optiplex from toasty bros was great, loved those (in videos only). But your creation is much more eligible to be called a console killer. I sold evga 2060 ko ultra for 150€ two months ago, so I can confirm this.
Would like to see you do another video with a Broadwell 10 or 12 core. This system is worth a review on it's own. Thanks for the video!
👍Great content Iceberg Tech!
Amazon US has a "renewed" thinkstation P520 system with a 900w 80+ platinum PSU, 32gb of DDR4 ram, and a zeon w2135 which is on paper equivalent to a ryzen 7 1700 for $140. That's one hell of a deal if they leave it up. I wish I had $150 to spend.
Wow
@IcebergTech I love watching your content. Please keep up the great work! I've been on the cheap xeon gaming pc bandwagon for years, so your humorous, informative tech review videos are my favorites. Thank you, my brother.

I'm glad I made the switch to PC. It's so much fun figuring out how you want to build it.
Great job on this video! I’m interested in seeing your take on a PS5/Series X killer in the future.
Yea the problem is the series s used is 150$ all day on eBay so this isn’t accurate. He used a used computer so it must be compared to a used console
@@yyeezyy630 Except this pc is performing much better than series s and you can do another tasks beside gaming on it. Its price is pretty similar to the new Series S. Massive win for PC here, not even a question.

Awesome work again my dude! FYI, look into P520's for any future recommendations, dual 8 pin PCIE support(900W psu is stock) and 2x M.2 support on the motherboard(no adaptor card needed)
I am looking at P520 as well.
Recently did one of these builds
$70 HP Z440 w/ 980 ti, 16gb of slow ram, Xeon E5 1660 V3 (+$45 Shipping)
The one thing I added was a sketchy Amazon PCIE 4x to M.2 adapter and a cheap storage harvested from other computers. It works great for my little cousin, dominates his Xbox One in everything imaginable.
Funny you went with the E5 2640 V3 at the incredible £7 price tag... There's a listing for 10 OF THEM at £15 at the moment on ebay, just picked one up and planning some tasty X99 builds soon :) Genuinely ridiculous value
Are you planning to use one of Those Aliexpress motherboards or will you salvage A workstation pc?
Love the x99 platform
I love x79, you sacrifice a couple of cores, but you can overclock the crap out of a 1680v2 or V3 8 core, and DDR3 2400 is the same speed as DDR4 2400, plus I can boot from NVMe with my x79
This is the most badass benchmark video Ive ever seen
Nice comparison !
Always loved the console killer builds, since it forces the builder to be cognizant of the specs and cost/performance vs consoles.
i'm 49 into tech. This is my opinion: this is one of the greatest youtube videos i ever sAW. I will single handedly push you to 100k
Good stuff, Man.
Just built my first one. It actually works! 🤣
Nice. My second pc was a dell t workstation and upgraded CPU and then my next was a hp z420. Great to see still working but yeah inspector helped!
hi mate what app do you use to see fps ?
You have a P500 and were able to boot to a PCIe NVME adapter just from the BIOS? Mine never showed and I had to jank it with a clover boot.
To be honest, the power connector issue could just be fixed by going up to the next gen P520. That has two 8 pins routed from the board directly by default and comes with much faster Xeon W processors. Funny enough it usually is cheaper or the same price over the P500/P510 as it is being dumped so heavily by workplaces (or wherever they come from.)
I just commented about a p520 on Amazon US for $140 and free shipping. Lol.
Oh and I forgot to say. That is by far the best deal I've seen, especially from Amazon. Usually the best deals for old workstations are found on ebay.
came her to say the same thing. P520 has 2x m.2 support on the motherboard as well.
Great vid! a followup(maybe a short?) with a better cpu (260quid pc?) would be nice to see how it improves the games where it was lacking. BUT I really hope theres a 500$ series x/ps5 killer vid coming 😁maybe a p520 with a w-2145, or whatever you think is more fun!
I'm rocking a w-2145 and yeah, that would fit the bill perfectly...
Nice video, as always.
I recently picked up a P520 with a Xeon W-2145 (and included 8-pin power connectors... 😊) for a few dollars more than this, and I'm loving it so far.
I'm a bit conused at your comments around @15:35. How is this CPU limited, when your GPU is pegged at 95+%, while the CPU is neither being utilized nor boosting anywhere near max clock speed?
Lastly, any chance of cicling back on your previous video on SAM, and testing an AMD card in this system? Lenovo doesn't advertize whether resizeable BAR is supported in their BIOS updates.
I'd try it myself, but I'm using a GTX 1070, and a legacy boot (non-UEFI) SSD from an old system at the moment.
Can't wait for the next gen console killer!
😂That “one” area lol o
Thank you 🤝
Thanks to your video I started searching around ebay and my country's equivalent to craigslist and found an utter bargain:
a Thinkstation p510. The listing did not say much about the PC other than it would come with a 512 GB M.2 SSD, 16gb of RAM and a 4c 8t Xeon v4.
What I received was the following:
the Xeon as listed, which I replaced with a 14c, 28t E5 2690 V4
64 GB of Ram
14TB! worth of server HDDs (they were configured in RAID, thus they did not show up in the Settings I guess
The NVME drive as listed
The 850W Platinum PSU
Some crappy Nvidia GPU
Yeah, that's about it. Also came with some apparently rare and high end PCI DAQ Card which to the right buyer is worth about 600 USD (trying to sell that thing on ebay rn, but not sure if anyone wants this at 300 USD.)
Ah: the price: 80 USD lol... Incl. shipping and everything.
I was just looking into building a PC thanks for saving me so much money. Do you think you can make a build to kill the series x and preferably with a newer workstation?
New sub great channel and vid 😊👍
After years of using, messing with, upgrading and fixing hp, dell and Lenovo office pcs with the proprietary components i would never mess with them again. It is just too much of a headache. I'll take atx, micro atx and itx standards any and every day of the week
Thankyou 👍
I love these old Workstations. I have 3 of them at home for my homelab. 3 x T3600 with E1650s. Great Solid machine.
For just a few more quid, results could have been much much higher.
There is a ton of CPU's to choose from on the Socket 2011-3 platform. Many with higher Base clocks or Turbo.
2696 v3, 2697 v3, 2687W v3, 2640 v4, 2687W v4, etc., are all good choices.
Haswell v3 can have an all-core Turbo Unlock mod applied to the BIOS.
Broadwell v4 can support faster 2400Mhz RAM speed.
Enable Resizable BAR with a BIOS mod.
Get a 4X NVMe carrier board and run up to four drives instead of just one... Xeon still has PCIe lanes to spare !
The HP Z440 workstation is better than the Dell and Lenovo offerings in the same class... It has a 700w 80+ Gold rated PSU. With two 6-pin power connectors instead of one, making those sketchy adapters far less sketchy.
With up to 22-cores/44-threads possible... it's like a cheap Threadripper rig. Even if you don't use one of these builds for gaming, they still make a great home server... NAS, VM Host, Render Box, etc.
It's good to see someone trying this kind of thing out still despite how much of a disaster the PC space has been
Wonderful video
Half hour video, hell yeah
on that socket I'd stick to strictly V4 due to the IPC and efficiency improvements over V3, I'd also try to aim for one of the lower core higher clock workstation chips for gaming, since a lot of those workloads are still single- or low- threaded. definitely a great socket, I run servers with it all the time, super affordable to work with and do upgrades on
Does this case contain a standard board and PSU? I like the case and consider buying a broken one for the case.

Good job with this.
The XBox 30FPS on Starfield is not an avaerage, it's locked. You don't get below 30 dips, as shown by DF, if unlocked it would run somewhere in the mid 40's.
I'm still using a 1080 since 2017. Man I love having a pc over a console. I choose when I want to upgrade not when Microsoft or Sony wants me too
mine just arrived and its been fcked, all the lovely ibm facia is wrecked. does anyone know if you can get replacements or empty p500/700 case other than ebay?
How did you install Windows to the NVMe?
Iceberg you should try to ramp up the fans on the 2060 a little, i think the results would get a little better :D

It's very simple. Just open the app and click the two buttons. I usually restart afterwards, though I'm not 100% sure whether that part's needed.

Would really appreciate the help 🙌🏼
DLLLAAA! Also mate can you make your Rtss overlay a bit bigger it's really hard to see.
I have been doing these types of builds for over a decade and they are still the best super low budget option, though the super low prices that we used to be able to get, the dime a dozen reference that we were so fond of is getting more scarce these days. But if you can find one that will accept a standard power supply with maybe just a 24 pin adapter you are much better off.
What do you think about a Lenovo Think Station P520, with 32GB RAM, Intel Xeon W-2133, and add in a RTX 4060 with an opportunistic price drop? $530, assuming the GPU at $300.
11:39 you got me there
I would have LOVE to see this CPU with the turbo unlock trick, because you can run it at 3,4 GHz always, what about a second video with this enable???
Ik u probably already know this, but the e5-1660v3 is going for like 60 or less and it's basically a 5960x (without overclocking but there is a microcode bug which allows it), which as you've shown is a killer chip often comparable to modern 5th gen ryzen in some scenarios
Strongly agree that workstation Market is insane
I have a p700 with a two E5 2698 V3 I use it for gaming and video rendering
The only issue is the power supply
